We’re delighted to reveal that the first set of Pre-Season Projections are now available to our Members. These can be found under the Projections section in the Members Area – we’ve supplied a season-long table, split by each position and, for a short-term view, have also provided a table which plots the Projections for just the opening six Gameweeks.

The Player Projections are, in many ways, our player predictions, offering a view of “projected” goals, assists, clean sheets etc for the season ahead. We also include Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points and bonus in the Projections, although no matter what Fantasy game you play, these will hopefully provide an invaluable guide.

We will be updating these Projections frequently: there will doubtless be tweaks required, particularly to the playing probabilities – in some cases almost immediately as the new signings alter our thinking – but we’ve decided to present our first set of data.

In case you missed our previous article, this season’s Projections are being created using the statistical model behind the Rate My Team website. This site was run by Chris Atkinson for the past two seasons, during which he achieved some superb results with the model. Chris is a statistician who specifically built his model to simulate and predict the returns of players in Fantasy Football and, particularly, the FPL. Having brought Chris on board to help us with our Projections, we’re pretty delighted with the end result and the power and flexibility of the model behind them.

The Projections are, of course, part of our Members offering. For more details on the benefits of Membership and how to join, click here.

Here’s a short FAQ with more details….

How do I use the Projections?
Crucially, these tables can be used as another opinion-former when comparing players. Every player is rated for goals, assists, clean sheets etc based on values created by the “Rate My Team” statistical model – the values returned for each player are the expected values in accordance with its calculations.

A good way of thinking about them is to consider them average values for each player. If the season was played out 500 times, the values you’ll find in these projection tables are the average that the model would expect the player to score.

One of the most useful aspects of the Projections is the value column. You can sort by this to find the best value (Points Per FPL Million) delivered by players in each position.

With tables for the season and the opening six Gameweeks, you can get a view on long-term and short-term returns and value.

What are these values based on?
The “Rate My Team” statistical model is a complex beast – it uses historical data stretching back a number of seasons and, of course, specific player and team data. When generating the player values the model looks at the specific fixture in each Gameweek, assessing the strength of both teams before calculating the likely team goals scored and how these goals will translate to specific player stats. The probability of a player taking part in the match is also a key ingredient. Factors such as rotation, injuries, suspensions and absence due to the African Cup of Nations are also simulated by the model.

Why do the stats show decimal places?
The values returned by the model are not exact values – they are not figures that state what a player will score for a particular stat but a value which indicates their expected return. As such, the model can be more accurate when producing data with decimal places.

Why has Van Persie got fewer goals etc?
There’s no denying Robin Van Persie enjoyed an incredible season last term. For starters, he avoided injury and was almost ever present – the first time he has achieved or even came close to this in his entire Premier League career. Secondly, Van Persie was, without doubt, the key attacking force in the Arsenal lineup – the summer acquisitions of Olivier Giroud and Lukas Podolski suggest this may not be the case any longer. Added to this, of course, there is uncertainty surrounding the Dutchman’s future at the club.

Why are there fewer goals across the board?
The model used historical data to create an average goals per game value for the season. Although we’ve seen a trend that has seen the goal count soar in recent campaigns, the model has been more cautious and is currently expecting less goals for teams, with fewer big scorelines and teams that are likely to leak large amounts of goals. In a nutshell, the model doesn’t think that there will be a Blackpool or Wolves around as whipping boys next season.

When will these Projections be updated?
We’ll most likely update these every day up until the season kick-off. As we get more data on likely first choice lineups and as the transfer market moves to cast doubt over starters, we will adapt and tweak the model accordingly. It’s highly likely that, over the space of a few days, you’ll notice significant movement within the data for certain players.

There are still lots of issues to be resolved that will have a marked affect on the Projections – notably the striker situations at Arsenal and Spurs.

We’ll keep you posted on any major changes and movements in the Projections as and when they are made. Full Projection analysis articles for members will be following next week.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Fixed on the 2 big hitter stategy? Ive gone for only 1 and am pretty happy - so much value in a few budget picks.

    At the moment:

    De Gea Fed
    Cashley Hang Cuellar Fabio Demel

Terry likely to get banned. Fabio and Cuellar will do very well this season i reckon, Hangeland in there for strong early fixtures then plan to get Santon/Staylor in.

      Another fail! To Parm...

Anyway I think Fabio and Cuellar will do really well - Sunderland very strong at home and Fabio looks likely to get plenty of attacking points + solid Reading defence. Another big hitter would mean losing one of them and confident they will finish the season not far off the top dogs.

Whatever Suarez got punished, Terry should have the same. Although I find Evra more of a twat than A.Ferdinand but thats probably biased too.

I can't stand Evra. I would not have been annoyed if Suarez didn't get punished because I think footballers get over 100k a week, so they should just get on with it. But "It's fine to say where I come from" isn't a valid excuse.

Yeah the excuse was kind of poor tbh. But yet again, I know hardcore Utd fans who think Evra is a waste and a liability. He's so childish for his age and for a captain, at least Suarez is fairly young, accepted the punishment and apologised.

Terry footage doesn't make him guilty, as stated in a court of law. It came out that A.Ferdinand wasn't even going to press charges but his publicist told him it would be a good idea. Publicist... that's all it was. A publicity stunt. Terry proved not guilty, move on.

it can be excused as it was said just once in the heat of the game.
Plus, Suarez said it multiple times and used words which are officially deemed racist.
(although you might argue that Terry deserves a lesser ban)

But Terry being English has nothing to do with the Courts decision. (no matter what you choose to assume)

I know most probably don't agree with this, I just feel that the media and human rights activists have made the world an overly sensitive place where people cant take a bit of verbal taunting. It's a natural human instinct to react to insults or physicality with an insult etc. Think both cases were taken way out of context when nothing was really meant but the language used.

That is not what I said. There were two sides to each case.
Ferdinand was at Terry too, just because it wasn't race orientated doesn't make it any less.
Not condoning racism, but a few words won't kill anybody, especially in a match situation where a player has been provoked etc. Everybody makes the odd racist remark or joke, shouldn't be punished to this extent for it unless it involves violence or truly disturbing comments. Hugely blown out of context, were both of these cases.

All I'll say is that 90% of the people I know have made, at some stage at least one joking remark about a Jewish/Black/Chinese/French/Irish stereotype and that is also considered ''racist.'' Racism is unacceptable. But words aren't. One sentence cannot be regarded as a crime. Violence, Hate Crime or persistent abuse are by all means worthy of a ban...but a one off slip of the tongue, is not worthy of a court case imo. Sorry if I've offended anybody...just how I feel.

Based on the ban Suarez got, Terry deserves the same. People saying he was cleared in court but shouldnt get banned - think the criteria for breaking the law and PL rules regarding this behavious are different.

You guys are all over the place ...

Putting aside what should be/shouldn't be, let's deal with what *is*.

There is a FA rule, and a law. They are different.
There is a court of law, and a hearing within a professional body. They are different.
There is what Suarez did and what Terry did. They are different (most pointedly, that Suarez's ban was doubled due to the repetitive nature of his offense. I don't think Terry is accused of multiple utterances, butI'm not totally sure on the facts on that).

So: Suarez broke a rule, repeatedly, and was punished.
Terry will be judged by his professional body and a judgement made. But the two cases, that you guys are trying to link, are totally different.

              😀

Terry's FA charge and Suarez's charge may be comparable ... but comparing Suarez punishment from a FA hearing over a FA rule is quite different from Terry's judgement from a criminal court hearing over a law.

I'm not sharp on English law, but clearly they had to prove intent - hence the sarcasm defense. The FA rule seems to not need any intent (based on the report of Suarez). In theory, if 'racist' language was used, it would result in a punishment.

What Terry might have working in his favor is that he - allegedly - was repeating something already said. That give Terry/the FA an 'out' here.

Yeah, made that point earlier. Law court and FA disciplinary hearing are different things with different rules and standards. Not illegal to say all players of a team are fat turds on tv but would sure get some sort of ban/fine from the FA.

As the judge said "Mr Terry's explanation is, certainly under the cold light of forensic examination, unlikely. It is not the most obvious response. It is sandwiched between other undoubted insults."

As you said, intent couldn't be proven, that he was being insulting. Thankfully the bar is set lower at an FA hearing.

Yeah, I get it. The clip reminds me of the judge telling Terry that his 'answer' sucks/is false.

    How is this team looking?

    Federici (Friedel)

Clichy - Hangeland - McCartney (Williams, Fonte)

Noble - Bale - Beausejour - Silva (McClean)

    Rooney - Aguero (c) - Graham

If I need to make a few changes early on in the season I'll easily be able to downgrade any of my big hitters, it should allow me to save my wildcard til later on in the season (which I haven't managed in previous years)

I suppose a I could find an extra 0.5 mil from somewhere to upgrade Clichy to a Chelsea defender. Who would you suggest from the Chelsea mids/forwards? Hard to predict who's gunna play 2 x 60 mins don't ya think?

I'm going Lampard and Torres, so I'd have to say them. Fancy both to get decent gametime, and you're covering the furthest forward player and the guy on all set pieces.

Torres -> Rooney in GW2 is a common strategy.

I'd keep Clichy too. Perhaps Bale & Rooney -> Lamps & Torres, then Torres -> Rooney in GW2?

Having Torres in my team feels a bit wrong but I suppose now that Drogba's gone he's gunna get a lot more game time and maybe he'll get his confidence back.

If I do what you've suggested I'd have 2.5M in the bank, should I use it upgrade Graham to Bent now or wait and do Torres -> Rooney in GW2?

I'd wait and do the Torres -> Rooney move. Maybe use the 0.5m to do Beausejour -> Taarabt? Failing that, it could come in handy if Lamps -> Bale looks like a goer in GW3

Not a fan - if any of the big hitters hit form you'll want them in, and that'll be hard without several point hits. Triple on CHE defence is also a huge risk - I think at least one attacker is required - how gutted would you be if they won both game 6-1!

Other comments - Cisse, Barfa & Jelavic are good, but I'd wait a couple of weeks. Nzog - better options in that price range.

Very risky, and would expect 2 if not 3 big hitters up front if you have none in midfield! Switch the defence/attack balance and you could be onto a winner. Not for me tho.

Worried now with City full-backs with the 3-5-2 formation.

Not sure the formation makes a difference to who will play, all 4 are good attackers. But yes definately plump up the extra for Lescott. Or just save 0.5 and go Rafael - sure to be nailed on with Vidic, Evans and Smalling out.

Cashley because he will get 180 mins. Ivan may not as 3 games in 6 days is a big ask and Ferreira will get some pitch time.

I went for Michu. Others would suggest McClean, Pienaar if he moves, Lennon if he starts, Ramires, N'Zogbia, Nolan, Taarabt, Sinclair.

Like I said yesterday mid-20s who done one season well with very first abroad from Spain isn't convincing me. Although I admit I'm not one of those knowledgeable chaps here so I'm don't know much how he actually plays, his playing style would suit PL or so, also club is under new management. Enlightening comment would be very welcomed.

legitimate reasons to doubt, i suppose. but his record in a league of similar quality with a team of similar quality is quite something, their fixtures are superlative, and swansea's playing style (under rodgers, anyway) seemed to give a player in that position great freedom to create and score. laudrup seems to be making some savvy purchases, shares rodgers' general philosophy if not his precise methods, and has worked with michu (and de guzman i believe) before. so i'm gambling on him for the time being.

although Everton notorious early start got me put off or is there any better alternative around 4.5m - 5m midfielders?

I don't think Cahill's departure would make much difference on Gibson's prospect.

Think Fellani and Osman will be first in line to play Attacking Mid - judging by how they lined up when Cahill was missing last season. Gibson should still pick up few goals from deep though.

Think the obvious Noble / Maloney options are a better shout though for the money

I have my doubts on Maloney and am leaning towards Noble.
Was just thinking of taking a punt on Gibson seeing as how arguably Gibson is critical to them last season and his impact on Everton.

Yeah I know. I was referring to him being in line for the role in the hole behind Jelavic.

Chelsea vs Milan should hopefully give some insight into how Chelsea will line up. Should be a fairly strong 11. Going back and forth between Lampard and Hazard myself.
