Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers take a moment to catch their breath as normal single-fixture service returns following successive Double Gameweeks.

Erling Haaland (£12.2m) leads an assorted array of alternative candidates from Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool, and even Brentford providing options for those managers tempted by a punt for the Gameweek 21 captaincy.

As usual, the Captain Sensible article is here to highlight which assets have the best chance of hauling.

First, we will assess the fallout of the captain poll, before then analysing the best options, Rate My Team (RMT) and the Premier Fantasy Tools ratings ahead of Saturday’s 11:00 BST deadline.

THE CAPTAIN POLL

Erling Haaland dominates the captain poll for the second successive Gameweek, backed by over 60% of the total votes cast by users at the time of writing.

The Norwegian has over ten times as many votes as anyone else at this stage, with City team-mate Kevin De Bruyne (£12.5m) currently in second place, backed by just over 6% of our users.

Mohamed Salah (£12.8m) occupies third place with 5.89% of the vote, followed by Kieran Trippier (£6.0m), Harry Kane (£11.7m) and Ivan Toney (£7.5m) a mite further back.

THE MAIN CANDIDATES

ERLING HAALAND/KEVIN DE BRUYNE

Erling Haaland headed home his 22nd goal of the Premier League campaign but his solitary Double Gameweek 20 return underwhelmed, especially for those who selected the Norwegian as their Triple Captain.

Despite registering two blanks since Premier League action resumed, Haaland’s underlying numbers, while dampened, still highlight his importance to Guardiola’s attack – and his captaincy credentials.

The Norwegian places in the division’s top four over the last six matches for shots inside the box (17) and big chances received (nine), a downturn from his early-season dominance.

However, Haaland continues to dominate the expected metrics, leading the division for expected goals (xG) and expected goal involvement (xGI), with 4.74 and 5.29 respectively.

Above: Erling Haaland places top over the last six matches for expected goals (xG) and expected goal involvement (xGI)

Kevin De Bruyne was a surprise omission from Manchester City’s starting line-up for Thursday’s 4-2 victory over Tottenham Hotspur, with the Belgian an unused substitute.

The playmaker’s absence from training photographs earlier in the week had been noted by eagle-eyed managers and De Bruyne had to settle for a watching brief as Manchester City came back from two goals down to demolish Spurs.

Prospects of a return to the starting line-up bode well for the Belgian given both his rest and the quick turnaround for Manchester City.

De Bruyne’s 20 chances created, and seven big chances provided place him in the top three over the last six matches, highlighting the midfield maestro’s creative influence.

Furthermore, over that same period, De Bruyne leads the division for expected assists (xA, 3.80), and ranks third for expected goal involvement (xGI, 4.73), highlighting his underperformance since Premier League action resumed after the World Cup.

Julen Lopetegui has galvanised Wolverhampton Wanderers since taking the Molineux hot seat, recording crucial victories to lift his new troops from the foot of the Premier League table.

While the Spaniard has inspired marked improvement in performance levels, Wolves rank fifth worst over the last four matches for non-penalty expected goals conceded (NPxGC, 6.58).

Furthermore, over that same period, Wolves faced two sides placed bottom six in the division for non-penalty expected goals (NPxG), West Ham United and Everton, with 3.26 and 3.71 respectively.

I don't think decision can be made until the FA Cup 4th round is done as the GW22 midweek is the replay date.

      No replay = possible double

Don't think there is massive upside in attacking returns so cheapest in White probably edges it. I like Gabriel for nailedness and goal threat.

Gabriel. Goal threat and 90 mins

White or Zinch might outscore the others for the rest of the season via assists and BPS, but there's always the minutes threat from Tierney and Tomiyasu

Saliba is also nailed, but Gabriel's shot count is ahead, iirc

    KDB, Rashford, Mahrez, Martinelli

If I go City, it will probably be Haaland. Took a risk on Rashford and it paid off this week but was worried about Haaland exploding when he scored last night and doubt Wolves will keep City out.

Haaland is certainly the safe option. I've also got both and I'm leaning towards KBD this week.

Wish I had the cojones to go Mahrez - about the only City attacker in form. Just Pep will probably bench him....

              Mahrez is on fire.
              So he'll definitely be benched!

Pep has also been praising his recent form which is as good as confirmation of being benched

            Why?

I'm thinking of selling KdB for Mahrez this week. I want to have the money to upgrade Almiron or Andreas to Saka. It's also the sort of lateral move that few people make and the form is clearly on Mahrez's side.

To be honest, Mahrez for me was a DGW punt which paid off handsomely. Always assumed I'd just transfer in Mitoma for him this week but now I think losing KDB might be a better option - can probably have a strong front 8 to cope with any Pep benching whims. Although ironic to imply KDB doesn't have that risk as well when he was benched last night and Mahrez hauled.

KdB has been awful since world cup. And he's really expensive. I'd rather have Mahrez and that also frees me to get my 3rd Arsenal attacker.

The 3rd Arsenal attacker is the real priority and I need funds from somewhere to be able to afford it.

He hasn't been awful, was awesome in the cup game and only his team mates have stopped him getting multiple assists.

Using my FT to buy a defender this week.
Defence is: Cucu, White, Shaw, Bueno, Trippier (so decidedly dodgy this week!)
Who to get though? Can't be City.

    b. Dunk
    c. Zinchenko

Bit of a mix of teams, gut feel is A or one of G/H. Would avoid Spurs and Forest, not sure an Arsenal defensive double up is great - better 1 def and 2 attackers. Mee possibly a good differential pick.

Thanks. I'm thinking similar. Spurs fullbacks bring attacking threat, and Forest look to have turned the corner and have become a solid outfit since before the World Cup. Hence lots of options!

I am not convinced Saka's output is worth the extra and you do have Martinelli. Brighton look good and have a nice run. So yes, I do. Only reason I am not bringing Mitoma myself is that I want to roll a transfer to attack any DGW 22 announcements.

This is a tough call. I think Arsenal has a better chance at a clean sheet (playing at home), where White can potentially pick up some bonus points, but Shaw has a higher potential of picking up assists or even goals! Who to play? I cannot decide.

    Rashford, KDB, martinelli, Almiron, (Andreas)
    Haaland, kane, Toney

    1FT , 2.1 ITB...anything worth doing? Nothing really i can see obvious - perhaps Mitoma for Almiron/Andreas?

Not sure on 3rd Arsenal spot?

Already have White and Mati and 100% getting in Odegaard.

Keep White or bring in Nketiah?

    Thanks

I personally like Nketiah but think Odegaard will score more points
