Gameweek 21 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is almost upon us, which gives us an opportunity to have a look at some more differential options.

This time, we’ve selected low-owned picks at Leeds United, Brighton and Hove Albion and Southampton, who we think have the potential to make an impact.

As always, to qualify, the player must have an ownership of 5% or less at the time of writing.

WILFRIED GNONTO

FPL Gameweek 21 differentials: Gnonto, March + Ward-Prowse 1
  • FPL ownership: 0.5%
  • Price: £5.0m
  • GW21-25 fixtures: BRE | nfo + mun* | MUN | eve | SOU

*Double Gameweek 22 will only go ahead if neither Leeds or Man Utd require FA Cup fourth-round replays

Wilfried Gnonto (£5.0m) is Leeds United’s most in-form player.

The 19-year-old was on fire against Cardiff in the FA Cup on Wednesday, scoring an impressive brace, having netted his first goal for the Yorkshire club in Gameweek 19. He was also electric in the recent 2-1 defeat at Aston Villa, with only a faint touch denying him an assist.

Capable of playing as a winger, second striker or centre-forward, Gnonto has registered nine shots and created four chances in four league matches since the Premier League restarted. Those stats are made even more impressive when we consider that two of those were against Man City and Newcastle. He is also an excellent dribbler and draws lots of fouls, frequently winning free-kicks for his team in the final third.

With Gnonto impressing, Rodrigo (£6.4m) scoring regularly, Patrick Bamford (£7.2m) back fit and Georginio Rutter (£5.5m) joining for a club-record fee, there is plenty of firepower in Leeds’ ranks.

There are some decent fixtures on the horizon too, which includes a potential Double Gameweek 22 against Nottingham Forest and Man Utd.

Gnonto is already one of Leeds’ most important players and at just £5.0m, could be an excellent third forward in FPL.

SOLLY MARCH

  • FPL ownership: 4.0%
  • Price: £5.1m
  • GW21-25 fixtures: lei | BOU | cry | FUL | new

Free-scoring Solly March (£5.1m) is still only owned by 4.0% of FPL managers, despite racking up more points (44) than any other player in any position since the season resumed.

Three double-digit returns have arrived in that time, courtesy of four goals, two assists and nine bonus points.

Under Graham Potter, March spent most of his time playing wing-back but was regularly shifted around. However, Roberto De Zerbi has chosen to push him further forward on the right of his 4-2-3-1 formation, a position he is thriving in. The Italian’s man-management also seems to be getting the best out of March, which he recently discussed:

“I love playing for Roberto – he’s great. He puts his arm around you and tells you you’re a good player. Maybe that’s what I needed.” – Solly March

From Gameweek 17 onwards, March has taken 10 shots and created nine chances. As a result, no Brighton player can trump his 2.32 xGI tally, including Kaoru Mitoma (£5.0m) and Evan Ferguson (£4.5m).

Brighton head into Gameweek 21 on a high after beating Liverpool 3-0 last weekend. Next up for the Seagulls is a trip to Leicester – who have lost all four games since the restart – with appealing fixtures against Bournemouth, Crystal Palace and Fulham to follow. It’s worth noting that Gameweek 25 could potentially be a blank, although that is dependent on the results of the EFL Cup semi-finals, which you can read more about here.

As for March, he is one of the cheapest midfielders in FPL but can easily be a week-in, week-out starter, allowing you to push more funds into other areas of your team.

JAMES WARD-PROWSE

Budget FPL defender Mitchell can capitalise on Palace long-term fixture appeal 1
  • FPL ownership: 5.0%
  • Price: £6.2m
  • GW21-25 fixtures: AVL | bre | WOL | che | lee

With four goals in as many matches since the Premier League restarted, interest in James Ward-Prowse (£6.2m) is picking up.

The 28-year-old started the season slowly, with just two attacking returns inside the first 15 Gameweeks. However, he has since played a part in all five of their goals under new manager Nathan Jones, which has coincided with him being deployed further forward, specifically as a number 10 of late.

“We played him a little bit higher so he can be more aggressive as his distances are through the roof week in, week out, so we know we can get a lot out of him. Everything he does is excellent.” – Nathan Jones on James Ward-Prowse

From Gameweek 17 onwards, he is averaging 7.3 points per match, having registered 10 shots and three big chances, whilst also creating nine chances for his teammates. Such is his importance, Ward-Prowse has played every minute of league football for Southampton this season. He is also on set pieces, including penalties.

Now, the Saints meet Aston Villa in Gameweek 21. The Villans are improving under Unai Emery but have allowed 14 big chances in the last four Gameweeks, more than any other top-flight side bar Leeds.

Ward-Prowse has delivered a string of impressive displays under his new manager and is an intriguing mid-price differential.

Can always use FT’s to bolster it slightly in the run up alongside it.

But it would be an extra defender who plays in 25 against Wolves? I’m not going to cram defenders in right now for the likes of Villa, Everton etc just for 25?

Oh it's worse than I realised. If Brighton have Newc then you might only have one. There's no way I'd WC into a team that doesn't have at least 3 likely-playing defs that week. That's just me

Yep I get all this, and I know, it’s not like I’ve overlooked it haha! But it’s like I say, I’m not going to cram my team full of defenders from lesser teams NOW just for the sake of 25? I’d wanna keep Shaw for the double, same for Ederson and White. So bolstering nearer the time for who looks best seems the best way to go. There is some time between now and 25

I realise that haha, so wondering how exactly to correct or help this, but at the same time I’m not gonna fill my team with weaker defenders from lesser teams right NOW for the sake of GW 25, but maybe bolster as and when I’m that department in the run up with FT’s?

      Mahrez + Toney + Raya/Sanchez + Aurier over KDB + Gnonto + Ederson + Estupinan for me

      1. RICICLE
        • 3 Years
        2 years, 10 months ago

Cheers Austin! I’ve given Toney a lot of thought and I’ve just decided to leave him out really, not had him for a while and Gnonto offers me so much flexibility in all other areas of a 352, plus Gnonto doubles in 22 now.
I’d still like Toney, but something has to give somewhere.
Raya/Sanchez combo is still appealing to me, as is Aurier.

I dunno if I can bring myself to go near Mahrez, every single time I’ve gone there it’s ended in disaster haha!

I'm just convinced that these lads will score more points than the other set of lads over the next 6+ GWs, especially if you consider something like Bruno over Saka, allowing Toney to Nketiah for free in GW23... Or maybe Saka stays, with Toney staying until he's banned. He's playing like a premium

I really don't like KDB as an asset right now, as I don't see him outscoring Mahrez, Bruno, even Brighton mids and Rodrigo anytime soon. He's out of form and Pep just refused to sub him on when the team was two goals down at halftime

'Refused him' is very much subjective. Come on, if you're going to tell everyone about everything forever then you can't surely pull such a claim

              • 7 Years

Pep had the option of subbing him on, and didn't. Pep said KDB being on the bench was "tactical"

If he's lying and that was due to an injury, then I'll accept that I've been lied to by Pep again. I'm just saying what happened

Haha! I barely ever trust Pep either, but it's the best we've got, since the journalists didn't press him further about it

Pep made halftime subs in two recent games when the team looked horrible at halftime: Chelsea and Southampton. So it's a tactic he's employed recently, but refused to do so here

I'm not implying that I gave him a suggestion that he "refused to" accept. Just saying he didn't do the same thing he'd done in the past month after bad first halves

Again, it doesn't count if we later find out that KDB had a knock or something. I'm just working with Pep saying KDB being benched was "tactical"

Guss we'll never know. KDB missed a training session, maybe it was a cover story that he was bust elsewhere. Then again, neither Foden or Cancelo played - but they're definitely on the naughty step.

              3. bench boost for every gamew…
                • 8 Years
                2 years, 10 months ago

From what I've saw Pep let the starterw get the chance in the second half to restore, but all of kdb, Foden etc was warming up, so if City doesn't do want they did in the first quarter of that second half kdb would come on. Just adding a view,

I hear ya, and to be fair deep down I don’t think KDB is worthy right now either, it’s simply that automated cover thinking I reckon, just because it’s City.
I wouldn’t be going near Nketiah as I prefer the double Arsenal mids with a defender.
Mahrez is a punt too far for me unfortunately.

I could……..however, afford KDB + Gnonto > Bruno + Toney right now with 0.3m to spare?

But then obviously I’ll be wanting to do Bruno to KDB for the City double and then possibly wanting Gnonto for Leeds double, so it’s a bit of a catch 22.

As for Raya I’ve gone right off him, I don’t believe Brentford will be keeping cleanie’s despite these fixtures, plus have Arsenal coming up soon, I fancy Leeds and Southampton to score past them.

I still think Bruno + Toney outscores KDB + Gnonto, tbh

Leeds double is against two good defences, on current form

The thing with Raya is that we're comparing him with Ederson. There's a gap between them in points, and I feel there's every chance of that gap widening, now that T. Frank has committed to a 3-5-2

Probably true to be fair. However KDB has Wolves next, and Bruno has Arsenal, so clearly I’d favour KDB here who has a good track record against Wolves and is ‘rested’ to a degree.
Toney is so difficult to get to, as I can’t have Toney and KDB from the off. I think Gnonto is superb, and really cannot see NFO keeping Leeds out at all.

I certainly agree about the Raya Vs Ederson scenario, it jsit comes down the fact that Ederson plays in 25 and Raya doesn’t. Granted I’d have Kepa as back up though who would play in 25, but City certainly have the better 25 fixture.

Understood. Nice to see the reasons behind each decision, as I'm usually more interested in the decision process than outcomes, and these are all very fine margins anyway (before hindsight)

They are fine margins for sure, I wish there wasn’t, I’d be a lot higher ranked haha!

Cheers buddy, I’ll still toying with switching Raya + Ederson, that decision will be going to the wire. Other than that, I can just work with FT’s and a couple bits of need be to bolster the defence for who seems the best in the run up to 25.

Even considering Mings for that Estupinan spot as I’ll need an extra DEF for 25, but can always leave that till nearer the time.

Looked closely at Aurier? Racking up the BPS and Forest have a much better defence now than earlier in the season: something close to Leicester's change in form before the World Cup

Maybe Schar to Moreno for free in GW25? Nice dovetail in fixture runs there

I have yes! Forgot to mention Aurier, he is appealing! Thing is when would I play him? Over the likes of one of the double NEW defenders or Shaw’s double, or White whimsy Everton in 22. Then again as a 5th defender, he is useful, and does only have City & Spurs over their next 7 games.
It’s that annoying thing though again of him not playing in 25, would be ideal if he did.

Alex Moreno is certainly an option and does play in 25, with a very decent Everton fixture so maybe he is the better option, over Bueno for example.

The blank in GW25 is due to the EFL Cup final. So if Man U beats Forest over the 2 legs, West Ham vs Forest should go ahead while Man U vs Brentford will have to be rescheduled

This means Aurier or Shaw should play, barring injuries et all

KDB > Bruno for the double though is definitely happening, and then I can decide from there if I’d wanna dk the old switcheroo back for City’s DGW in 23

I see that Leeds might be without their usual starting CB partnership of Cooper and Koch. If that happens it could be a big haul for Toney.

On paper, it looks that way. Might be worth getting him in. He scored a hattrick against Leeds last time out.

That's quite a turnaround. Not at all surprised either that Howe was once again lying about team news in his presser then. I know managers aren't obliged to give availability news but barefaced lying so often is just unnecessary, just don't say anything if you don't want anyone to know

      1. Bennerman
        • 7 Years

Let's put it in context, though. We play a silly side-game. There are real outcomes and ramifications in the real game, the real industry.

Let's all remember this is all b'sh etc.

          • 5 Years

Yeah but just don't give information either way then? Or just do a Nuno, "we have issues" / "some players are back". Howe literally said today that he "hopes it's not a long-term injury" and that they weren't sure when he'd be back. (This doesn't affect my team or decisions either, I just don't get why you'd go to this extent to act like your player will miss multiple games)

They have to do the press conference as per Prem agreement. Many managers fulfil that obligation but don't really wish to give any steers to the opponent. Fair enough.

Think it's the FFS tail wagging the actual real-life football dog to want managers to give 'team news' in that fashion.

    Bench one of these:
    A) Salah
    B) Mahrez
    C) Mitoma
    D) Odegard
    E) Rashford

Wow. That's difficult. They are all good. Can you play them all and bench a striker?

      1. Amartey Partey
        • 6 Years

If I had to choose from them all I would choose Odegaard, but he could easily score too.

Strikers are Kane, Haaland and Toney so not benching any of them.
Liverpool really off the pace at the moment but feels like a real gamble benching Salah. Maybe Rashford? Arsenal best form in the league and they're without Casemiro so be as good.

        1. Amartey Partey
          • 6 Years

Yeah, you can't bench any of those strikers. Risky benching Salah when he's playing at Anfield against a dodgy Chelsea side. Pep might rest Mahrez and make the choice for you.

Rashford loves to score in big games and scored 18 points against Arsenal at OT so risky benching him too.

Maybe I'll leave Mitoma on the bench as has lowest ownership, well slightly lower than Mahrez. At least then the damage will be minimal if I get it wrong.

The big question is : is KDB another Foden situation, and if so, surely makes sense to transfer him out for Mahrez, the new golden boy ?

KDB will always be the staple mainstay, it’s Mahrez I’d be wary of being ‘Pepped’.

Dunno, hasn't been in great form...First it was "personal issues", then "tactical", then didn't even bring him on in an important match when usually he relies on him, pushes him forward etc ...

        Doesn't smell right

I have to agree, I think it’s just because it’s KDB and we automatically tend to assume “he’ll be alright” in any scenario hehe. Something not right though in the spirit of things at City, maybe a light could be lit under them now after Pep’s post match comments.

Too early. Far too early, especially considering that Alvarez is a huge factor who's only just being reintegrated post-World Cup

More data is needed, imo. I wouldn't sell or buy (or cap) KDB atm, unless on a WC or with 2 FTs

I wish someone could have pushed Pep beyond that single "tactical" reply about KDB being benched, because now it could be about the same reason he missed training or it could end up being about the "hunger" et al he keeps talking about, especially considering Alvarez:

      https://twitter.com/ColmVHayes/status/1616156642810134564?s=20&t=0JybRSf1l0gD7dvtUJURzg

Pure speculation from me, and I wouldn't be surprised if Pep's lying about the tactical aspect. Just one to monitor

Fwiw, I think KDB starts vs Wolves. I'm just waiting a bit to see how Alvarez fits into all this
