Our latest Members article series, reviving an old Scout strand called Tales of the Expected, explores the latest expected goals (xG) data, assessing each side from an attacking and defensive perspective.

In addition, we’ll also check out the form players on show, asking if their recent output is sustainable.

Having last looked at these tables after Gameweek 19, it’s time to revisit them again, armed with the latest stats from the restart.

Only Premium Members are able to read these pieces, so sign up today to get full access not just to the editorial content but all of the other benefits, from hundreds of Opta stats to a transfer planner.

TEAMS

First up, let’s take a look at the minutes per xG data since the end of the World Cup to find out what changes, if any, have occurred at Premier League clubs.

MINS PER XG: GAMEWEEK 17-21

The top five are unchanged since last time, but Brighton and Hove Albion are up two places to sixth. The Seagulls’ tally of 14 goals from 8.06 xG is remarkable, and as the players become more familiar with Roberto De Zerbi’s playing style, it’s exciting to think what they could achieve in the second half of the season.

Liverpool, meanwhile, are in desperate need of goals, with just six in their five games from Gameweek 17 onwards. They’ve underperformed their xG by 3.40 in that time, with Darwin Nunez (£8.8m) culpable for a whopping 2.71 of that total.

As for Newcastle United, they have scored even fewer – four goals from 8.75 xG. No team has underachieved more in front of goal than the Magpies since the restart, with 12 of their 16 ‘big chances’ fluffed.

Nottingham Forest maintained their momentum by registering their eighth point from 15 on Saturday, which suggests they are turning their season around. After 22 new players arrived in the summer, Steve Cooper is finally transforming them into a cohesive unit, although they do need to become more clinical in the attacking third.

That applies to Chelsea too, but there are signs that they are moving in the right direction again under Graham Potter. The Blues have won the xG battle in four of their six games since the Premier League resumed, they are just lacking that bit of composure in front of goal. Maybe new arrivals Mykhailo Mudryk (£7.0m) and Joao Felix (£7.5m) can help on that front, with some very decent fixtures on the horizon:

Elsewhere, London rivals Tottenham Hotspur haven’t created much since the restart, while Crystal Palace’s issues in attack could be good news for owners of Luke Shaw (£5.2m) in Gameweek 22. The Eagles have had 64 shots since the restart, but just three of those efforts have been Opta-defined ‘big chances’.

I don't see my team having such a strong bench after GW24 as it transitions to a stronger starting 11, so...

    Comparing GW22 and GW23:
    a1) TC Rashford GW22
a2) TC Rashford GW22 and BB GW23 after transfer
    b1) TC Haaland GW23
    b2) TC Haaland GW23 and BB GW22
    c1) BB GW22
    c2) BB GW23 after transfer
    d) no chip

    GW22 if dgw:

    ....................Kepa
    ......Trippier Shaw² Botman
    Fernandes² Ødegaard March Rashford²
    .......Haaland Kane Toney

    Ederson(tot) Martinelli(eve) Castagne(avl) Bueno(LIV)

    GW23 £3.4M 1FT:

    ..................Ederson²
    .......Trippier Shaw Botman
    Fernandes Ødegaard² Martinelli² Rashford
    .......Haaland² Kane Toney

    Kepa(whu) March(cry) Castagne(TOT) Bueno(sou)

After reading the above I am so glad I just play for fun these days.

But good luck anyway mate whatever you decide. Hope you don’t lose any sleep over it though.

      I like b1.

The BB looks a bit forced, with away fixtures and Leicester defense.

I like Martinelli (eve) gw22 bench points potential, but for GW23 Castagne will likely be replaced by a dgw Arsenal CB so no more Leicester defence.

In that case, the bench will be:

          Kepa(whu) March(cry) Botman(bou) Bueno(sou)

Strong names there but all in away games. I can see the upside for playing the BB there and it may turn out to be a massive point haul if you get the 3 potential clean sheets. Personally, I would save the BB chip for better fixtures.

Do you still have your WC? If so, I definitely wouldn't BB either DGW.

Would use TC either on Rashford or Haaland, so just go with your gut between A1 and B1. I'm going with Rashford.

In this scenario I think a better use of your transfer next GW would be Bruno > KDB for his DGW.

Thanks. I get that KdB is a good move too. but Bruno at home to Leeds is still a good fixture. Getting rid of Castagne for an Arsenal CB feels like a good long term move.

So the consensus is that there will be other opportunities to BB later in the season (with more DGW) even if my bench players will be mere fodder by then. On the other hand the TC has two good options in dgw22 and dgw23 - a bird in the hand it seems.

WC to fill your team with 13+ BB-ers is generally the best way, happens around GW34 usually when FA Cup is moving fixtures around.

Think so too! Rashford only ever scores one goal per game. If he has a double, that is probably 10 points per game, 20 points x3 = 60 points. Haaland scores braces and hattricks for fun. If it is a good performance let's say a brace in one and hattrick in the other that would be 30 points *3 = 90. Much higher ceiling. I am debating risking it.

Not really. Rashford is in fine form, but this only translates to a goal a game. The ceiling for Haaland is higher.

Haaland tends to haul at home which against Villa may be enough if you TC. Away to Arsenal may be just a 2 pointer. Also for me GW23 seems like a good time to BB so TC may not be an option.

Let's say you TC Rash this week and he gets 20 points. You would have captained him anyway. 20 point gain.

Means you can't TC Haaland the week after, but you captain anyway because you were always going to. He bags 2 hattricks - unlikely but not out of the realms of possibility. 34 point opportunity loss.

Only a 14 point swing. Equivalent to an unlucky benching decision or two or a 50:50 transfer gone wrong. If you're set on using the TC on one of these 2 players then I don't think there's gonna be massive swings either way.

          Cue Rashford 1 pointer...

I will be doing it. Problem with waiting is there is always gonna be the "waiting for a better week" brigade. Yes, Haaland could also haul in 23. But I don't believe there will be much difference between the two scenarios. There are pros and cons for both. Rashford could suffer from reduced pitch time due to the congested fixtures. However 2 home games against 2 weaker " opponents feels like a better risk than waiting for 23 with Haaland against arguably one of, if not the best, defences in Arsenal and an improving and solid Villa.

      1. The Big Fella

Still the best striker in the league though and I think he could score against anybody so I don't believe the two scenarios are the same because Haaland's ceiling is much higher.

Trippier, Stones, Shaw / Burn, Castagne

Effective ownership. 50% of the game could own a player and all those people play him in their first 11 but nobody captains him. This gives him EO of 50% too. If half of those players who own him bench him that week and everybody else plays him and nobody captains him, his EO is 25%. If everybody that owns him plays him and captains him, his EO would be 100%. At 100% EO, no matter what he does, you will not make any gains or losses regardless of whether he hauls or not. Therefore it is the EO that determines how much your rank changes if a player gets returns.

Outside of the above oversimplified example, if the EO is 100%, you would need to have captained the player to make any gains otherwise it will make 0 difference to your rank. Haaland last week had an overall EO of about 195% meaning that you would need to have captained him to enjoy only 5% of the benefits of his hattrick. If you didn't captain him, your OR will have taken a massive hit (as you will have lost 95% of the benefits because 100% means you have not gained or lost anything). Does this make sense?

        1. The Big Fella
          • 9 Years
          2 years, 10 months ago

In the oversimplified example, this basically means that at 50% EO, if your player scores 10 points, you actually only get 5 in terms of contribution to your overall rank. If his EO is 25% and he scores 10 points, you get 7.5 points of contribution to your overall rank. And as I say above, if EO is 100% you get no points towards your OR. This is assuming you have not captained the player.

          Phew. Lots of examples there.

So it seems me to like the more people own a player, it will impact you a lot if you don’t own them.

              • 9 Years
              2 years, 10 months ago

Yes but it is more nuanced than that. If the EO is 25% that means effectively, 25% of the whole game own that player, even if the actual ownership is nowhere near that. That can be because of benchings or captaining the player (doubling the contribution of that player to his EO for that week). Mitoma scored 10 points this week. I had him and his EO was around 5%. This means I kept 9.5 of those points. If I had captained him, he would have been worth 19 points to me (despite scoring 20).

So the reason I asked what Rashford's EO would be this week is that if it is 150% (ownership, captains and triple captains), it means if I don't captain him and he scores 10 points, I actually lose 5 points. If I captain him I earn 5 points (200%-150% =50%) but if I triple captain him I will earn 150% on whatever he scores (300%-150%). It is a good way to decide who to captain and when.

Two successive double games makes it difficult to decide on the transfers. I will try to make it easier by showing the differential players after the transfers. In the following, A is better than B for 23, but B is better than A in 22. Which combination would you go for?

    A.
    22: Casemiro + KDB
    23: Nketiah + KDB

    B.
    22: Bruno + Martinelli
    23: Odegaard + Mitrovic(NFO) or Bruno(lee)

Common players: Saka, Rashford, Mahrez, Haaland, Kane

      So many options out there:

      Bueno (3.9m) vs ful
Patterson (4.0m) vs AVL -- subject to fitness.
Zouma (4.4m) vs NFO -- I am pretty sure Nottingham Forest cannot overturn the deficit in second leg.
      Moreno (4.5m) vs eve
      Ream (4.5m) vs WOL
      White (4.7m) vs lei

I would go for White if you have the Arsenal slot and the money. Otherwise, Zouma.

I’m thinking of selling Patterson for Shaw and benching Ake this gw, would you do that or it’s dumb cause I’m selling someone who will feature in 25 for someone who won’t?

I don't think so, because Patterson is capable of negative points in GW25, and I believe Shaw will outscore him (if both are fit) in any stretch of games

Remember that points are counted across the season, not just based on number of players in specific GWs

  13. A proposed Chip strategy
    Ze_Austin
    • 7 Years
    2 years, 10 months ago

If you're willing to risk holding the three single-week chips beyond BGW25, here are my arguments for this chip strategy that I think might maximise points:

FH32: not a good week for the template with fixtures, and also happens to be a BGW for those who progress in the FA Cup. I feel it's the best time of the season to go for some one-GW punts with great fixtures. I know that FH is usually reserved for DGWs, but the template actually handles all three major DGWs well (29, 35, 37). Note that "the template" here refers to the 30+ players who you'll regularly see here in FFScout Comments over a brief period of GWs, not just the 11 or 15 most popular assets

TC34: Haaland vs Brighton(A) and Fulham(A), tentatively. Yes, Haaland's hat tricks have been at home. But take opponents' defensive form (at the time) into consideration, and then note that these home opponents would flip to away opponents in the second half of the season. Remember the Leeds game, where he could have scored 5? That was away. GW1 West Ham brace was away as well. These two possible DGW34 opponents are teams who don't sit back regardless of opposition, making them perfect for him. Still, two caveats:
. Man City might not progress in the FA Cup. If they lose to Arsenal tonight, we'd need Brighton to beat Liverpool and go far in the cup for this DGW to materialize. I'd instead look towards playing it on Rashford in GW22 or Haaland in GW23
. If the title race is clearly over by GW35, Haaland might not be a guaranteed starter anymore, as the consensus is that Pep will prioritize UCL. Another reason to play it earlier, again on Rashford or Haaland early... Or Trippier later, depending on where the West Ham fixture is rescheduled to and/or Newcastle's FA Cup progression

If City beats Arsenal tonight, I'll probably hold the TC chip until DGW34. If Haaland's DGW doesn't materialise by then, I'll push it on a nailed asset with good form in DGW37. DGW37 is my comfort blanket with this chip, as I expect someone to be available by then if the Haaland patience doesn't work out. Again, it could be Trippier 😀

BB29: I'm not certain of this, but I think GW29 is likely to be the biggest DGW and should involve most of the template players having at least one good fixture, without the rotation fears of BB34/37

FT BGWs 25 and 28: It's hard to go into a GW with only 8 to 10 players, but I think that might be worth it this season. With the exception of BGW32, the big blank weeks have good fixtures for the few popular players who'd play, so I'd suggest rolling with them and not selling/missing out on players who are likely to score lots of points in the GWs surrounding the blank GWs, unless the replacement is a long-term hold or you're dead-ending towards a wildcard. I wouldn't even recommend hits to field 10 or 11, unless they're long-term replacements. Alex Moreno, Mudryk, Reece James and Darwin are on my radar for GW25, for instance

GW35 is likely to be an issue though, with the Coronation on Saturday 6 May, and Champions League semifinals in the following midweek. If, say City, get that far, and have play on Tuesday (which will be decided by EUFA), their GW35 fixture might have to be brought forward to Friday 5 May, which would mess with DGW34.

Newcastle is already out of the FA Cup. Dammit, I just noticed that. Trippier's DGWs will then depend on opponents' progression, so I won't place so much hope on that anymore. The pending West Ham game is still attractive though

Some top planning there Austin. Right there with you in my thoughts on TC. Not too sure about FH yet but on the lookout for a BGW with a double or 2 mixed in. BB is, perhaps strangely, the chip that I'm most excited about this year - could be huge if we get it right since there's no real need for bench 'fodder'. Had begun to think about WC this week but I'm going to hold it to use just before 29 I think

Seems like the tide is turning on KDB. Plan was to hold him through GW23 but Mahrez the man in better form.

          Raya
          Trip Saliba Shaw
          Kdb Odegaard Rashford Mitoma
          Haaland Kane Ferguson

          Ederson Botman Perisic macAllister

Think I will sell kdb for Saka this week and bring in Mahrez for MacAllister next week. Can afford to play pep roulette with my bench, just need to get the calls right.

I could move after the FA Cup tie tomorrow as it looks like kdb might fall and Saka may rise again.

I don’t mind Mitro -> NKetiah, but that means I have to ditch another ARS player and it means I can’t get BRUNO this week without a hit.

GW 22 Gabriel, KDB, Mitro to Schar, Bruno, Nketiah
            GW 23 Bruno to KDB/Mahrez

3 Manu for 22, 3 Ars and 2 City attackers for 23 which will be prime targets for GW 25 anyway. You’d already then have 7 attackers total for 25 and can switch out Shaw and Patterson in GW 24/25 for 2 more playing defenders in 25 for a full XI. No FH needed and only the one hit in 22.

          A. Gw22- almiron havertz > Bruno gnonto for free

James is fit and expected to return to playing soon, if not in GW22. Wouldn't sell him now. You've ridden out the storm

So I like Bruno + Nketiah now, then roll FT for GW23 or switch Patterson to a long-term asset from a better team (if affordable), like a second Newcastle defender or Stones. Wouldn't touch your other players in GW23

Cheers. James' minutes will be managed initially, tempted to sell him for stones. Selling Patterson will leave hardly any funds to get in a decent defender.

Fair points there. I like the upside of a Stones move, then. I don't think the hit in option A is worth it over the free moves in B

After a poor start to the season I am trying to be more open to ideas and its really helped me climb from 3.5m to about 400k, not planning forward too much and going 1-2 GWs at a time.

I’ve ‘locked in’ Rashford this week but I think if Haaland looks like he can bang against that Arsenal defence then I should look to stay open again with TC and consider it in 23 with the big man.

Got to stay fluid with plans!

Triple captain is such a dice roll of a chip. It accentuates variance.

Impossible to predict what will happen in one GW. So just take your pick, fill your house with horseshoes, rabbit feet, and crosses; and just hope for the best.

          Chip strategy...

I've already blown my TC and BB.

I think I'm going to try and navigate 25 and 28 with transfers.

I want to FH whenever the big double is I think, and WC - not decided yet.

Anyone else in the same situation, and what are you planning?

Pretty set on using TC on Haaland, Rashford's ceiling is pretty much 1 goal so that is not enough for my greedy me.

BB will be used in a huge DGW probably in a GW 3X. Will use FH hopefully for another big DGW hopefully.

How are the prospects for possible DGW-s for ManC and Haaland? If they win FA Cup match against Arsenal does that give possible DGW for them?

Main goal is to understand if Rashfords DGW would be the main TC target in that season.

I’ve been a fan of The Grateful Dead for many, many years now, but I only listen to their live stuff because they weren’t very good in the studio. Anyway, Salah to Bruno only, or go the whole hog with Andreas to Rodrigo as well? Have two trades.

Just noticed a Crellin post pointing out that if Derby beat West Ham in the FA Cup, GW25 could actually be a double for Newcastle. I guess it would be dependent on Southampton turning the EFL cup tie around too though. Don't be too hasty selling that 2nd Newcastle defender!
