Not only did Manchester City fail to take advantage of Arsenal’s defeat at Everton by also slipping up at Tottenham Hotspur, but it was also announced on Monday that they’ve been charged by the Premier League for more than 100 breaches of its financial rules.

Accused of not cooperating when it comes to providing accurate information on the club’s financial position, a severe punishment could be on its way, although not anytime soon.

It means that they – in the words of Kevin Keegan – are still fighting for this title. Five points adrift of the Gunners having played an extra match, Pep Guardiola’s side still gets to face them twice.

If they can quickly get their act together, Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers will be keen on owning more of their players. Let’s investigate which are likeliest to avoid the infamous ‘Pep Roulette’.

HOW MANY DO WE NEED?

The champions’ last eight league games have included defeats at Spurs and Manchester United, whilst losing at home to Brentford and only drawing with Everton. In the Gameweek 20 clash with Spurs, a 2-0 deficit was eventually turned into a 4-2 win.

Above: Each team’s last eight matches

Team form is average and, individually, it’s bad. When ranked by form, Riyad Mahrez (£7.7m) is the only Man City man inside the top 30 midfielders, whilst none are in the top 50 for defenders.

There is simply much better value in the assets of Arsenal, Man Utd and Brighton and Hove Albion right now. Until recently, a triple-up on Man City assets looked essential but now – having to guess which out-of-form names will play, for a Double Gameweek that still looks tricky – perhaps it doesn’t.

UPCOMING SCHEDULE

It’s complicated further by a busy fixture run that should include a Blank Gameweek 28 and several Champions League outings that will likely take Pep’s priority.

There’s a week-long gap before hosting Aston Villa, followed by a match every three or four days. It’s not like Villa are an easy opponent either – Unai Emery has rejuvenated them into five wins from eight, with two successive away clean sheets.

A top-of-the-table meeting with Arsenal, followed by a hectic schedule that will surely see rotation surround the trip to RB Leipzig, does not bode well for any purchased Man City assets.

MAIN FPL TARGETS

Which FPL players and teams top the xG tables? 4

ERLING HAALAND (£12.2m)

Starting with the most obvious pick, all active managers have Haaland and usually choose him as the default captain. It’d just be too damaging not to, such is his 85.4 per cent overall ownership and 99.98 per cent within the top 100k.

By the Norwegian’s extraordinarily high standards – 21 goals in his first 15 league games – he could almost be deemed ‘out of form’ after blanking in three of the last five. Yet one of the others brought a hat trick!

Wilson against the weakest opponent though at home. I can see him scoring but so does others, it's a tough decision this week

Shaw facing Leeds without Casemiro is my third sub for GW23. Leeds attack by creating chaos. They're easy to handle if you have a good DM to predict where the ball's going and mop it up before it passes through the midfield to overwhelm your defenders. Right now, I'm aware of only Casemiro being able to effectively handle this in the current Man U squad without getting two yellows. I don't know much about Sabitzer, so maybe he's the answer

Botman facing Bournemouth is an easy answer for me here, as Bruno G's absence might not have much of an impact as Bournemouth has serious issues with creating chances anyway, as well as putting them away. Bournemouth's new boy is a spark, but I trust Newcastle's defensive unit to be able to handle 'em... And of course, there's a chance of putting something away on set pieces. Granted, nowhere near Shaw's attacking threat

As for the three attackers, I'd bench none. What's the rest of your attack? If taken in isolation, I think Martinelli will score the fewest points, but that's still 2 to 4 appearance points and maybe one return: he faces two good defences, so I don't expect Arsenal routs in either game. Still, I'd much rather bench someone else

I don't consider Wilson or Mitoma as options for the bench in GW23 because they have great stats (both) and form (Mitoma is ahead of every asset in FPL who's played more than once), and face two teams with some of the worst defensive stats in the game. Wilson had three great chances and scored once vs West Ham - a much better defence than Bournemouth - even without Bruno G

Tough one on the attackers. Definitely don’t bench Mitoma and even with 60 mins each game (let’s say) Marti surely can’t be benched in a DGW.

Bruno to Saka & Ward to Kepa or Sa, whats the consensus with the Wolves DGW announcement?

    1. Boberella
      • 9 Years

I’d personally prefer a defender with attacking threat from wolves. Dawson for example. Sa could be a further FT down the line so don’t think it’s worth it. Prefer Kepa set and forget. A wolves def can sit on the bench most weeks.

    DZ Update

Mostly the same as the last: https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/comment/25633825

    Two differences:

    - Toney to the nailed Liverpool forward in GW25, giving me two more fixtures against defences he should get (and mostly miss) some good chances against. Expecting at least 4 points for appearances, then maybe a return or two. I can then easily bench him until I switch him to...

    - Wilson in GW28, giving me triple Newcastle, Chelsea and Arsenal with guaranteed fixtures, and then...

    - White to Shaw for BB29. Still expected to be a massive DGW, as I might end up with 28 fixtures since my double Arsenal attack vs Leeds is the only guaranteed SGW. If Spurs don't double in GW29, then that means I'll have 11 players in GW28 and then a nice SGW for Kane and a Spurs defender on BB29, so no net change. The rest of my doubles aren't really dependent on the same factors that affect GW28, except maybe capping someone else if Haaland somehow doesn't get a double: https://twitter.com/BenCrellin/status/1622981263903674370?s=20&t=knw_QJ_RQ4jZ1mW_Uqzklg

Hoping for no major shocks. Always ready to adapt though

    Good luck, one and all

Reckon you might want Dalot instead of Shaw by 29? That is my main thinking selling Shaw for gw25

      1. Ze_Austin
        • 7 Years
        2 years, 10 months ago

Still far from now, but I like Shaw's attacking threat

Also, he's more likely to get assists from interplay with Rashford than Dalot with Antony. Dalot has one attacking return (GW4) from 15 starts this season, and it was before Antony came in. Shaw's had 4 returns since GW13

  7. Boberella

Ok, so I’ve pulled the pin and activated my WC.
Was gonna do it in GW24 and just do Toney to Nketiah this week and worry about playing Walker and not owning Kane, but thought sod it and just did it this week instead.

Now looks like this (made 10 changes):

    Kepa (Sanchez)
    Trippier Zinchenko Ake (Tark Dawson)
    Mahrez Odegaard Saka Rashy Mitoma
    Haaland Kane (Mitro)

Well setup for 23 and 25 with an eye on 28 & poss BB in 29.

    Planned FTs:
    GW24 - Ake to James
    GW25 - Roll
GW26 - Mahrez to Maddy + possibly Mitro to Felix (or just the first one depending)

    Thoughts?

This is actually class mate, rate the differing from the herd and going for it!

Some lovely differentials in there Zinny, Tark & Dawso, and getting Mitoma is a move I would love to make but it's never the top priority, the jealousy is real!

        Thanks mate.
Getting March over Mitoma 2 weeks ago was annoying. Doing the sideways stuff like Walker to Ake and White to Zinchenko etc. And finally getting Kane.
It feels good to have a clean slate!

How do these moves look? I know things can always change, but this is just a general direction I'm planning to move towards.
    GW24: Save
GW25: Shaw, Martial -> Gomez, Gnoto (11 starters, 6 dgwers)
    GW26: Nunez -> Kane

    GW23 team is:
    Kepa
    White, Ake, Trippier
    Saka(v), Odegaard, KDB, Rashford, Mitoma
    Haaland(c), Darwin
    Bench: Ward; Martial, Shaw, Bueno

    1. Boberella

Looks good to go for 23.

Brave holding (and playing) Darwin until the DGW!

Bueno should play some part in GW25, so ok to hold probably.

    2. Ze_Austin
      • 7 Years

I haven't seen anything this season to suggest more than 2 points for Gomez in total in GW25. Maybe a lot would have changed by GW25, but at least the attackers are safer because they won't be penalised as we ship goals and big chances for fun. This is like buying a Leeds defender for DGW22, or maybe somewhat worse

Heck, I may suggest a punt on the defenders facing us instead, as some are rightly loading up on Wolves defenders after that team's made us look silly twice already this year

Rather than saving FT, can you afford Darwin to Kane vs Leicester for GW24? Could be a massive boost to your points, and then maybe Martial to Watkins and Shaw to Chelsea/Spurs/Wolves in GW25

The rest of your team looks well set up. Nice work. Please don't undo it via double Pool unless we look much better very soon

      1. Ze_Austin
        • 7 Years
        2 years, 10 months ago

*Darwin to Kane for GW23, I mean

But maybe you've already used that FT, so I'll take the hit, tbh

        1. Boberella
          • 9 Years
          2 years, 10 months ago

I’d do this too. Kane will almost certainly outscore Darwin in the next 3 GWs based on recent individual form and team form.

And sorry, I missed the Gomez transfer in. Don’t know why you’d do that. Wolves or Everton def for me a better idea.

Lost Salah for a hit last GW, to get my second Arsenal mid

Didn't even get my heart pumping with fear of regret as we limped to that loss vs Wolves. Saka blanked, but the other part of the hit was Almiron to Mitoma

I believe Darwin should only be a hopeful punt for the DGW after filling the other 7 spots with top performers like Kane

We're in relegation form. It's depressing, but at least frees up lots of FPL funds because the pricing was heavily skewed towards the expected City and Liverpool title race this season

I want to wait one more gw before deciding Darwin. Yes, it's a risk. But having to put out other fires have meant that I've have to hold on to Darwin. And now that he has a dgw, I just felt may be I can hold him for a few more gws. Yes, the Gomez punt for 1 gw is risky. But it's going to depend on how Liverpool respond in the next 2 gws. Yes, I agree that Liverpool assets are poor right now because Liverpool are in Sunday poor form. But I guess it's hard for me to imagine Klopp not being able to turn it around. He's still among the best coaches in the world who has, what was until last season, one is the best squads in the world.

To be able to afford Nunez to Kane, I need to downgrade Martial for a hit first. Not sure if that's worth it with the upcoming dgw. But i guess I should decide based on how Liverpool and Nunez perform in gw23.

The Villa game at Etihad still promises the usual Haaland brace+, at least with KDB expected to start

Arsenal's two games are against good defences. Yes, City's conceded in many recent games, but they're definitely nowhere near giving away many big chances per match or getting battered

So it's still Haaland for me due to Villa's table-leading 12 big chances conceded in their last 4, only behind... Err... Liverpool with 16

Fun fact. Ødegaard means 'abandoned farm'. The surname comes from the resettling of farms after the black plague. There were tons of farms left abandoned after their residents succumbed to the plague.

Think it through and offer some suggestions, that’s where the fun is. Don’t completely outsource the fun. You wouldn’t go to the local show and ask someone to eat a Dagwood Dog for you, would you?

      1) Moves like Jagger - make your own moves
      2) Macarena - do the same moves as everyone else following instructions

Teams not bad, lots not blanking GW25. Recommend Indpush's instruction above.

Or generally replace players you don't like or who have a blank with players you do like who have a double or two without taking hits.

Initial plan here is Akanji + Saka in for Cancelo + Martinelli (-4).
Save in 24 and then use the 2ft's to get to 11 players or so in 25.
    Anything else standing out?

    Kepa.
    Trippier, Shaw, White.
    Martinelli, KDB, Fernandes, Rashford.
    Haaland, Mitrovic, Nketiah.
    Ward, Bueno, *Cancelo, Andreas.

    Best option here, 2FT

    A) Almiron> Saka/ Ode
    B) Bruno> Mahrez plus A
    C) Martinelli/ Almiron> Saka + Ode

City owned already > Ederson/ Haaland
Arsenal owned already > White/ Martinelli

If I want Salah dgw25, then Ødegaard makes him affordable. If.

Same for me. But can also downgrade Shaw to Tarkowski and still afford getting Salah. But don’t like beeing depending on transfer 2 weeks ahead

Initial plan was to roll transfer this week and stick with Bruno for the next 2 games. Now with the dgw25 news, I think I need to be sure to have the right Arsenal players in place for the upcoming fixtures.

    Kepa Ward
    Trippier White Shaw Lewis Bueno
    KDB Bruno Rashford Odegaard Martinelli
    Haaland Kane Gnonto

    1FT, 0.0itb

    Should I:

A - Stick to the original plan and hold
    B - Bruno & Martinelli ➡ Saka & Mitoma (-4)

Will most likely do Shaw ➡ Tark for gw 24 either way.

If I go with A, I will most likely end up taking a -4 in gw25 to get Saka in for Martinelli anyway so thinking it may be better to just get it out of the way now. Option B gives me more flexibility and frees up some money in my team.

    Thoughts?
