Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers brace themselves, once again, as reigning champions Manchester City and plucky title challengers Arsenal face off – and play twice – in Double Gameweek 23.

The main event bears the hallmarks of a blockbuster, with its very own master and the apprentice sub-plot, and despite Erling Haaland (£12.2m) appearing as the overwhelming armband favourite, we analyse the latest Premium Members data to solve the captaincy conundrum.

As usual, the Captain Sensible article is here to highlight which assets have the best chance of hauling.

First, we will assess the fallout of the captain poll, before then analysing the best options, Rate My Team (RMT) and the Premier Fantasy Tools ratings ahead of Saturday’s 11:00 GMT deadline.

THE CAPTAIN POLL

Erling Haaland returns to the top of the captain poll in Double Gameweek 23 after a short break, backed by a mite over seven-tenths of the total votes cast by users at the time of writing.

No other player has garnered more than 10% of votes at this stage, with Bukayo Saka (£8.3m) currently in second place, backed by just around one in 11 of our users.

Martin Odegaard (£7.0m) occupies third place with 7.4% of the vote, followed by Eddie Nketiah (£6.8m) and Kevin De Bruyne (£12.4m) further back.

DOUBLE GAMEWEEK CANDIDATES

ERLING HAALAND/KEVIN DE BRUYNE/RIYAD MAHREZ

The summer arrival of Erling Haaland was proclaimed by all and sundry as the death of competition, with the realistic expectation that Manchester City’s dominance would be unassailable.

Haaland has certainly brought goals, 25 goals in just 20 Premier League appearances to be exact, but the Norwegian’s ample returns have papered over the cracks as Guardiola’s side struggle to adapt from tiki-taka to target-man.

Three blanks in Haaland’s last five Premier League matches have led to churlish suggestions that the Nordic sharpshooter is slightly out of form – but his recent hat-trick against Wolves is a stark reminder of his potential.

Haaland’s shot volumes are down over the last six matches, with his 15 attempts bettered by 19 other players.

The Norwegian places in the top four for big chances received (10) and expected goals (xG, 3.94) over that same period.

However, four of Haaland’s five blanks this season have arrived away from home in high-pressure games against the following “big six” opposition – Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.

Above: Erling Haaland rank second best for big chances received (10) over the last six matches

Kevin De Bruyne dropped to the bench against Tottenham Hotspur in City’s last Premier League outing, with tactical reasons cited as justification for the demotion.

De Bruyne is expected to return to the starting line-up against both Aston Villa and Arsenal who, unlike Spurs, typically play a more traditional back-four formation.

The Belgian was sprung for the bench just before the 60th minute against Spurs and created a match-leading three chances, highlighting the playmaker’s potential.

De Bruyne’s 19 chances created, six big chances supplied, and 15 successful crosses all play in the division’s top three over the last six matches – which suggests that returns will come for City’s underperformer.

Furthermore, City’s midfield maestro tops the charts for expected assists (xA, 3.15) and places a very respectable third for non-penalty involvement (NPxGI, 4.04) over that same period.

Riyad Mahrez (£7.7m) has undergone a timely revival as a Fantasy prospect ahead of Manchester City’s Double Gameweek 23 against Aston Villa and Arsenal.

The mercurial Algerian – usually renowned for his unpredictable and unreliable expected minutes – has started six out of seven Premier League matches for Guardiola’s troops since Gameweek 17.

A secure starting role and Mahrez’s natural ability are a potent combination, and City’s winger highlighted his high-ceiling potential in Double Gameweek 20.

Mahrez scored two goals and supplied an assist against Tottenham Hotspur delivering a 17-point haul in the second fixture.

Since the return to domestic action, Mahrez has registered seven attacking returns, netting three times and turning provider on four occasions, and the Algerian’s point tally (46) over that period is just two fewer than Erling Haaland.

The underlying numbers highlight Mahrez’s all-round potential with his nine shots in the box, 15 chances created, and five big chances supplied all placing in the top three among City teammates since Gameweek 17.

Manchester City’s immediate opponents Aston Villa are revitalised under the new stewardship of Unai Emery. Villa are in buoyant form, winning five of Emery’s first eight Premier League matches, but their defensive underlying numbers are a concern.

Villa place in the bottom two over the last six matches for big chances conceded (20) and non-penalty expected goals conceded (NPxGC, 9.88).

Arsenal host City in the second fixture of Double Gameweek 23 and Arteta’s rear-guard will offer a much sterner test.

The Gunners have registered nine clean sheets this Premier League campaign, a total bettered by only Newcastle United (12), but bizarrely only two shut-outs have arrived at the Emirates Stadium.

Over the last six matches, Arteta’s troops rank third-best for shots inside the box conceded (39) but sit around mid-table for big chances conceded (11) and shots on target against (25).

However, the Gunners rank third-best for non-penalty expected goals conceded (NPxGC, 6.11) despite facing Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United over that six-game period.

I’d stay away from B just because of how short of a gw25 team you’d be. If you’re playing WC or FH then, maybe. If considering a hot, why not Bruno to Mahrez and then another to improve defence for the upcoming fixtures.

Personally I've gone something similar to B: Bruno and Martinelli to Mahrez and Odegaard. But I've done it because I have no intention to go for Salah in 25. If you want that, then KDB might make more sense.

Can we have a hot topic on whether it's worth using a FT or even a hit to transfer Martinelli to Saka/Odegaard. Martinelli is highly owned and so many people are asking variations of this transfer, thought it was worth a proper discussion.

Martinelli is out of form, Saka is on penalties, Odegaard is only 0.4m more expensive than Martinelli

Though it's only been 4 games since Martinelli scored, so could easily go on another run.

Personally think that burning a transfer on a player that has a DGW to another player....in the same team....that also has a DGW, is bad management. Especially when transfers are so important going into the blanks. As for taking a hit for that move...crazy. People's problem is FOMO. Forget what others are doing.

It's a tough topic to tackle because of the different time perspectives you can attach to any narrative. You can approach from a DGW23 perspective, GW23-25 perspective and even longer towards GW28. All the while you need to keep in mind that we have a finite amount of reasonable transfers and other doubles and blanks to navigate.

From a DGW23 perspective, I'd stick with Martinelli as the fixtures should suit him and I'd trust him to still get two games this GW. This also saves a transfer for future moves.

From a DGW25 perspective, I'd twist to preferred assets, even for a hit, because this allows you to focus the remaining transfers on navigating other teams' assets. It does carry the risk of later having to manage ARS assets should there be any surprises in store. I'd expect Trossard to steal some minutes from Martinelli across 5 games.

From a GW28 perspective, I personally don't like to plan that far ahead due to the sheer amount of fixtures and therefore potential for negative surprises to attempt to solidify 3 players across the whole stretch. However, the longer the period, the more time for your changes to pay off. I don't worry about Nketiah's minutes as I'd think Jesus will get eased in, but the dynamics of the team will surely shift with Europa League reintroduced and Arteta's preferences revealed in each competition.

Overall I'd take the mid-term perspective and change to preferred assets, but very much keep in mind that they might not last to GW28 necessarily.

      B. Goals have dried up a but lately as teams have started defending deeper against them & Forest have tightened up substantially. That game doesn't look as high scoring as it might have a few weeka ago. Bruno topped the xGI v Leeds last game, had a few half chances / nearly assists.

I think I'm leaning towards bringing in a City defender to take the 3rd City spot. Too much focus on the doubles this GW and should look at the fixtures against Forest (A) and Bournemouth (A) in GW24 and GW25 respectively. Probably bench White vs Villa (A)

Leaning towards Akanji over Ake at the moment. He is a bit more flexible than Ake as he can play CCB and RCB in the 3 assuming Pep sticks with the 3 2 setup. Lewis seems to be the only player available Pep trusts to play the inverted FB role both left and right side but early subs may be an issue.

With both Dias and Laporte fit and when Stones comes back bit of a lottery! You would expect Laporte and Dias to get minutes particularly with UCL starting soon. I will see what Luke and Emma@Jumpthewave predict later today

Laporte and Dias have been fit and on the bench in the last 2 games, I'm not sure they are Pep's preferred options at the moment. However you are right they'll have to get mins at some point as there is a lot of away games with a short turnaround. Stones out for 3-4 weeks puts Akanji ahead of Ake as my preferred option.

    Bruno/Almiron >

    a) KDB/Odegaard
    b) Mahrez/Saka

I think A. KDB more nailed and Odegaard a long term hold

Hmmm what to do here? 1FT, 1.5 ITB

    Ederson
    Tripper Botman Gabriel
    Bruno Rashford Odegaard Martinelli
    Kane Haaland Darwin

    Ward Shaw Andreas Patterson

    A. Roll FT
    B. Bruno to Mahrez
    C. Shaw to Akanji
    D. Something else

Tough, I would probably roll the dice on Mahrez for free

B Bruno has two games before 25 blank
Mahrez has double an no blank, so two games more than Bruno up till 25

That's a very selective way of looking at it. I'd say look at next two gws before you transfer Bruno out. Mahrez does have 3 games to 2 but Bruno has great fixtures and will Mahrez even play all 3?

True Bruno two good fixtures an nailed
Mahrez will have 4 fixtures over Bruno dgw 23 games in 24 an 25 when Bruno blanks
Hopefully some game time there for mahrez, who knows eh.
Depends how many blanks you have in your team I suppose

My point is you're cherry picking the GWs to make Mahrez look better. Can easily transfer Bruno out ahead of 25

True but so are most like Bruno to kdb saka etc that’s what doubles do to people!
Agree Bruno is good hold for 23 an 24

You could easily save - are you sticking with Nunez? Nunez to Nketiah and Martinelli to Mahrez could work as well

I've held Darwin this long I may as well hold him til the double, but these moves have high upside for this week

    B) Shaw to Ake

      A) Shaw

I don't really like doubling up on defenders from one team. If they fail to keep a CS then that's two players getting 2 points

Trippier is pretty much exempt from this though, since
        A) everyone owns him
        B) he doesn't need a CS to haul

Best move here? 1 FT and 4 ITB

    Thinking Martinelli/Fernandes > Saka

    Kepa
    Tripps White Shaw
    Odegaard Martinelli Fernandes Rash
    Haaland Kane Toney

    Ward Botman Pereira Bueno

    Who to play please?
I know obvious choice is to play Shaw but can a poor Liverpool team find some form in a derby game vs EVE?

    A) Shaw vs LEE
    B) TAA vs EVE

    Thank you 🙂

Was thinking that too after the last game BUT... LIV are so poor at the moment & EVE with a new manager + it being a derby game....???

What’s everyone’s chip strategy at the moment? Think I’m looking at either:

    (A)
    29: WC
    32: FH
    34: BB

    (B)
    29: FH
    32/33: WC
    34: BB

I think these are two best options and think we just need to be flexible going into 29....I'm leaning towards A at the minute. I feel I can make more gains from an earlier WC than using the WC to basically try to optimise the BB in 34

Yeah I think I’m with you on A. As well as getting more weeks from your WC, a few of the decent likely 29 DGWers (MCY, TOT, MUN) have good fixtures from 30 onwards which you likely won’t have if you FH in 29 instead.

I need to look into it more but pretty sure those who blank in 32 are more likely to have DGWs in 29 and 34 so makes A more appealing

Was thinking A but with Arsenal no longer doubling in 29 free hit might be best used then

Still got Leeds (H) though - you really want to take out Arsenal players?
