What are you expecting here? 2/3-1 Arsenal? They haven't won at Anfield for over 10yrs. I've a feeling Liverpool might teach Arsenal a lesson today. A bit like when a vibrant United turned up at Anfield last month..

While I agree that Liverpool have certainly been impressive at Anfield in the big games, Arsenal aren't the same as ManUtd or other teams this year. Their record is definitely something to ponder but that's also been during years where they have been miles away from the level they're at this season

Has FPL become less fun of late?

You see all content creators doing the same moves every gw.

The herd mentality is greater than ever and if you divert away from it you are accused of not having the optimal team.

You'll probably end with a good rank following them but got to say im kind of bored right now.

    Thoughts?

Avoid the content creators if possible, they definitely suck the fun out of the game. Funsuckers I call them. Except the FML FPL boys, they look like they’re having fun with it, especially when they are wearing their singlets!

The only difference to now and a few years ago is that these people tell and show you their moves. I suspect the same transfers were getting made in previous seasons if you look at the transfer data.

The bottom line is that there are only a certain amount of valid FPL options so moves are going to be similar. If Rashford is out long term then the move to Grealish just fits everyone. These creators are not gods, we all see the same picture in the main. The key is in the timing and being one move ahead

How's the gw26 wildcard scored this week?

It worked well into the double but if Haaland had played it might have been different.

Then again, that's football. Iask could have had 2, Toney 4 but the second penalty was a dreadful decision and Mitoma denied by VAR.

Rashford had loads of chances too but is probably best to sell now. Shame for him really.

Mine’s going well in medium term despite initial short-term frustration at finally selling Salah before his mega week. Up a million places - from 1.6m to 600k. Might use Rashford injury to reactivate Salah for next week…

They are more clued up as there are multiple different sources of the same guidance being pushed to the 'casual' player.

That is a simple fact. Saying that fact that isn't a positive or negative thing, it's just a fact. You can add your own view on what it does to the game.

Watch the black box episode where Andy Mode gives a little 1-2 minute speech about it.

He is very clear/rational about the effect of it all.

Posting the same thing here often gets mixed replies due to the nature of the 'posting habits'.

    1. Ze_Austin

Mitoma or Trippier in 36, Haaland in 37

But FH34 might not be needed as it's similar players you'd typically want around that GW anyway, unlike FH32

      1. Ze_Austin

What I mean here is: I'd rather take hits to build up a good DGW34 squad than use a FH for it, because I'd want those players for the GWs before and after GW34 as well

While my preferred GW32 team is nowhere near what I want for the other GWs

        With a -4 I can get this for 32

        Raya
        Robertson Trippier Botman
        Martinelli Saka Andreas Mitoma Salah
        Watkins Isak

        Its a tough decision

        1. Ze_Austin
          • 7 Years
          2 years, 10 months ago

Yeah, I'd definitely stay away from Robbo here (rotation risk and our defensive stats) outside just GW32, and Andreas is a stopgap to me (prefer March for many reasons)

Raya seems quite likely to concede vs Villa, as well as Newcastle against Spurs

I wouldn't want Martinelli and Saka over the alternatives (Grealish with Rashford if fit, Foden if he isn't) from GW33 to GW37. I'd also want both Haaland and Kane, but Salah has more fixtures than Kane so it works

So even though you have the player quantity, I don't think it's as high-scoring as what a FH could get you if you focus on building the team for the other 7 GWs instead

    Funny old game this…

Lost a million in team value in six game weeks. Gained a 100k spots in OR. Nearing top 10k as it stands and still firmly in the LMS league by TM. A season where team value almost lost meaning because so many decent cheap mids delivered way better than many of the high priced stars. Loads of cheap defenders too if you got them at right times. Personally I’m really happy with the way my seasons gone so far. Still hoping for that last little push so I can get inside that elusive top 10k and what’s more important win my ML.

Now, a 1-1 will do tonight with Salah and Saka own goals thank you very much.

Something I still dont really understand about VAR and the whole clear and obvious error thing. When the VAR sends the ref to the monitor to review his decision, does he have to conclude that he made a clear and obvious error to reverse his decision?

    1. Biggsy
      • Fantasy Football Scout Member

I think the concept is that VAR only intervenes where it's a clear and obvious error. I think that statement is only used to articulate that, if VAR aren't sure, they default to the referees decision on field. That is then used to suggest going to the monitor.

I think once he goes to the monitor, it's then down to ref to decide if, watching it back, the call was right or not

        • Fantasy Football Scout Member

Yes that is what seems to happen but I dont know why the clear and obvious error policy shouldnt still apply given that VAR should only be intevening when the onfield officials have made clear and obvious errors. The ref looking at the monitor should still be establishing if his original decision was a clear and obvious error rather than making a fresh assessment. In fact if its not clear and obvious, VAR shouldn't send the ref to the monitor at all.

Thing is, VAR is operated by people, and people have egos to a greater or lesser degree; they have a team of people operating VAR to minimise this effect but different recommendations can and do occur.

Clear and obvious is worded intentionally to reduce subjectivity but just as there’s always someone who wants to show off how good/clever they are, there’ll be VAR operators that want to referee the game.

Saka. Stuck with Odegaard for a while, then doubled up with Martinelli, and then sold Ode a couple GWs back. Will probably bring in Saka on WC33 though.

The amount of saves Raya's made made me look at the Shots Conceded (on target) stats and it suggests that the Brentford defence in front of him is obviously pretty dodgy and his club owe him big time for their current league position. Interestingly, Southampton would be in line for a Europa League spot instead of the Championship if that stat governed the league table. Perhaps if they had Raya in goal instead of ace shot-avoider Bazunu they wouldn't be in such a mess.

How do shots conceded compare to xGC? A good defence may still limit the attackers to half chances which are easier to save, thereby resulting in a high SoT conceded and save volume. Dunno.

      So who is seething?

    3. The Mentaculus

When I was researching GKs just after the WC, it was the difference between shots conceded & big chances conceded that swayed me to Raya. The stats still show Brentford conceding the 3rd highest total number of shots, but 10th for big chances conceded. They also have by far the highest number of shots conceded from outside the box. So, a lot of low xG chances conceded = perfect recipe for maximising save points, while still getting a decent number of CS

I hate to labour on about Bazunu but could I just point out that he assisted Grealish for his goal yesterday and also jumped out the way of Alverez's penalty (if Southampton had put a medium sized tree trunk in the middle of the goal it would have saved the spot kick comfortably). 😀

Hope both Shaw and Chilwell start, Maddison to Grealish, keep Rashford as FH32, playing March ain’t sound bad vs Che.

For me, the value tied up isn't a big an issue as just not being able to carry an injured midfielder due to limited options up front. Maybe if you have 3 forwards you're happy to start every week it would be fine, but I still have Isak & might just bench him for Villa, FH32 & then reassess his rotation risk. Feels like I have loads of options to replace Rashford but not many for Isak (and I really want of piece of Newcastle attack)

Don't have FH 32, so am dead-ending then wildcarding in 33. Problem is I will likely need to sell Haaland and Rash to put a decent team out, then buy them back the next week.

Could cost up to 0.8 in value (and I'm below 100m SV atm). Still doesn't really bother me given how long we have left in the season and the plethora of high-performing, low cost options available.

I'm leaning that way unless given doubts about DGW34 availability. Coming out of bench boost my bench is decent and reluctant to have enforced transfers leading up to that DGW.

        Alright!

Think Martinelli outplayed him last time..

For Salah, Saka, TAA and Zinchenko so it is going to be exiting later today!

Martinelli is so good! Trent will need Henderson on the right side to double up against him.

Grealish looks the real deal now huh? Seems I messed up bringing in mahrez instead this week, along with stones too. Hopefully a vintage mahrez haul to come against Leicester

Unlucky with Mahrez. Am curious, was it the possible penalty kicks with no Haaland that swayed your decision?

Just his overall explosiveness to be honest and a bit more assurance on game time with foden out. I knew it was a big risk but I have a lot of good memories with him where he's had massive hauls as a huge differential. But also long streaks of 1 and 0 pointers too. Just an asset I really like to own when the opportunity presents. Probably made a mistake this time though but let's see in a few weeks

Yeah, understandable. I have a soft spot for Mahrez too. Considered bringing him in also but I’m much more aware that I like to go against the grain so fought that instinct and went with the form player. I knew I was captaining the City player I was bringing in (didn’t trust Haaland’s minutes), so that probably helped.

Do I now get him back for GW31 when he doesn't play in GW32 or ride it out and wait for GW33 ( arsenal) or wait for DGW34 ?

True, it looks overwhelming right now. But it just takes a few events to go the other way such as Bayern taking a narrow lead into the second leg or Liverpool to beat Arsenal convincingly with Leeds up next.

Yeah obviously he could megahaul v Leicester. Problem is, buying him will kind of wreck my planing for BGW32. I guess I'll just have to do it.

I'd definitely want Haaland for next week.

I think the potential rank drop if he scores well again will probably outweigh any gains from having an extra gw32 player.

      Spurs v Brighton:
Spurs were ridiculously lucky. Son wonder strike. Forgot Kane was there til he scored.
Mitoma G disallowed for handball. Welbeck G March A denied by Mac handball. Should have been a pen for Højbjerg foul on Mitoma.

      Southamton v City:
Slow start, then City rampant. Haaland, KDB, Grealish unstoppable.

Just watched the Spurs Brighton highlights again. I know posters above have stated that Brighton were robbed.

How do people feel really about it? When I watch a game like that and I see so many decisions unfairly go against a team, I just can’t get past the feeling that there’s corruption in the game.

It’s really diminishing my love of the game - both in real life and in playing fpl.

I’ve just watched MOTD and I don’t think Brighton were robbed. Like the commentators said on the Mitoma handball, the linesman had already called handball and then it’s harder to overturn it.

The penalty that Mitoma didn’t get was an injustice but you still have to score the penalty.

There are loads of decisions that are marginal every week.

      Think you are somewhat overreacting.

I don’t think it’s corrupt. I think it’s just a poor standard of refereeing and those at Edgeley Park being utterly incompetent. Far from fixing the problems, VAR has actually made things worst. Fans accepted the inconsistencies when they were genuine mistakes made by a call in the moment by the referee. To get it wrong when you have a video team that can watch slow mo from a number of views is criminal. Doesn’t matter if it’s refs making the calls or VAR, until you have consistency the arguments will rumble on. That said, I feel particularly sorry for Brighton and note the PGMOL have already apologised this morning. That will make up for the two points Brighton lost, won’t it?

I think both disallowed goals for 'handball' were correct decisions.

But Brighton should have been given two penalties, not just one.

The galling thing is this is precisely what VAR is meant to be all about. Ref cannot see everything but VAR takes 2-3 minutes for something that should take 2-3 seconds, and STILL gets the wrong decision.

Something not right at all. People cannot be that incompetent, surely?

Although the ref had a clear view for the Mitoma penalty incident - incredulously did not see it.

Linesman should not have given handball immediately unless he was absolutely sure (and understands the laws). They are all miked-up, so he could have kept his flag down and murmured that there was a possibility of handball, that VAR would then check. So they just are not using it properly.

I'm confused about the handball law. I thought the sleeve was still considered not to be the arm, or did they change it again? If this is still the case, it was a clear and obvious error to have called it a handball, I reckon.

It's the consistency with which these dodgy decisions favour the big teams that is the clincher for me

What just like the very dubious foul on Henry yesterday that gave “Big team” Brentford a penalty against “Little team” Newcastle ?

Have a think about what you said.

Newcastle are trying to upset the traditional top four though so it did Benefit a big team (not in the end). I’m not a conspiracy theorist but this is happening week after week in favour of the trad big 6 and against anyone trying to upset them. West Ham fans say the same happened to them the last two years. It’s biased, whether conscious or not

The charge that the dodgy decisions only favour the big teams because Spurs got the decisions against Brighton clearly isn’t true when Brentford got an incorrect decision against Newcastle.

Its incompetence all round, not dodgy.

Literally just explained this. Dodgy decisions in that game benefitted the traditional big six. It’s not about the decisions going towards the bigger team in a particular game, they seem to go against any team upsetting the trad top 6. Newcastle and Brighton atm, west ham last two years

Did the penalty decision yesterday favour them ? No

‘Big team’ is a meaningless term imo. There is a traditional top 6 and they wield a lot of influence. I think whether consciously or not, this influence affects decision making at a higher level than a particular game. The bias isn’t in favour of a particular team in a certain game, it’s generally in favour of the trad top 6. Richard Masters is a guest of Daniel Levy at spurs games quite often. It’s not because Levy likes his banter is it? It’s influence peddling and filters down and manifests eventually in refs making decisions that protect the traditional big 6, who are wealthy and influential.

Do we have stats to get a picture of VAR decisions in light of your claim? Not saying it isn't true but is this "big teams" thing just perception?

As we've seen with Barca recently, there IS corruption in the game. It didn't end with Sepp Blatter.

There are some incidents that when you look back at a replay, like the VAR people get, the decisions are blindingly obvious yet they still sometimes go the other way. It's bizarre.

Felt this way a lot with England in the winter. Some of the decisions, even after review, were inexcusably uneven.

It's nothing new. There has been corruption in the game for many years. Only the blind or simpletons that can't see past their elbow think different. It really upsets some people when you mention it too. It's like they don't want to believe it ( usually UTD fans) so they get angry when it gets mentioned . I mean these refs get paid 100k a year , how can they be consistently terrible and not have to answer for it. As soon as any manager questions it they get hit with a fine. Look at FIFA, says it all

Even as a Utd fan I find it incomprehensible the extent to which we’ve always had decisions favouring us over the years.

it's not corrupt in the sense that people are bribing officials etc.

      It's incompetence.

Which is v poor but not deliberate in the way you say.
