Aston Villa maintain their unbeaten start under Paul Lambert, with Brett Holman amongst the goals again in a 2-0 win at Peterborough, while Stoke have to settle for a draw in Kansas after Asmir Begovic is beaten by a deflected header from more than 30 yards out.

Peterborough 0 Aston Villa 2
With his central defensive options somewhat limited, Paul Lambert fielded Nathan Baker and Chris Herd in the heart of the back-four for the trip to Peterborough last night. Shay Given returned between the posts, Enda Stevens continued at left-back ahead of Stephen Warnock, while Charles N’Zogbia was handed an advance role in attack alongside Andreas Weimann. Daniel Johnson was handed starting role on the left flank and was first to threaten before N’Zogbia had an effort saved from the edge of the box. The former Wigan man fired wide, while Stevens also went close to scoring before Villa’s attacks finally proved dividend, with Johnson slotting home an Eric Lichaj cross. Stevens was praised highly for his display by the club’s official website, with his attacking threat a constant menace to the hosts – if he can cement a place in Lambert’s starting XI, he could be an intriguing option at 4.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL). His cut-back to Stephen Ireland allowed the midfielder to tee up Brett Holman for Villa’s second – the Australian international is now his side’s top scorer in pre-season, with a couple of goals under his belt.

While the result continued Villa’s unbeaten start under the new managers, Lambert was left reeling yesterday evening with the news that Richard Dunne and Gabby Agbonlahor are both set to be sidelined for the start of the season. The centre-half is out for six to eight weeks after undergoing a groin operation – with Carlos Cuellar and James Collins both leaving during the summer, new boy Ron Vlaar already looks a key player in the heart of defence. Agbonlahor will be missing from action for four to five weeks due to a knee injury sustained earlier in pre-season.

Aston Villa Starting XI: Given; Lichaj, Herd, Baker (Clark, 81), Stevens (Warnock, 81); Delph (Bannan, 70); Carruthers (El Ahmadi, 70), Ireland (Burke, 81), Johnson (Holman70); Weimann, N’Zogbia (Delfouneso, 74).

Kansas 1 Stoke 1
Kenwyne Jones was handed a role alongside Peter Crouch last night, with Jonathan Walters shifted to the left wing. Robert Huth began the game at right-back but was subbed off for Ryan Shotton on 18 minutes after picking up a knock but returned to replace Ryan Shawcross after the break in the heart of defence. Jones and Crouch both had chances to score but failed to trouble the keeper as the first-half finished goalless – Jones than made way for Cameron Jerome shortly after half-time. The Potters began to take control in the second 45 and created chances aplenty; Walters, Jerome and Huth came close, while Crouch was presented with a trio of opportunities to break the deadlock but failed to take any. Tony Pulis made a number of changes as the game progressed and it was substitute Michael Tonge who eventually gave the visitors the advantage, slotting home from the spot after being fouled in the box. Stoke looked to have the game wrapped up but it finished all-square after an Asmir Begovic clearance struck the head of a Kansas player over 30 yards away and flew past the stopper deep into time added on.

Stoke Starting XI: Begovic; Huth (Shotton 18), Shawcross (Huth 46), Upson, Wilson; Etherington (Delap 69), Whitehead (Arismendi 73), Palacios (Ness 55), Walters (Tonge 77); Crouch (Sidibe 65), Jones (Jerome 50).

In Other News
Everton gave a handful of first-team players a run-out for their match with Tranmere in the Liverpool Senior Cup Final. David Moyes handed the likes of Seamus Coleman and Jack Rodwell 90 minutes apiece, while Ross Barkley and Apostolos Vellios also featured for the Toffees – the latter’s goal wasn’t enough to stop his side from slipping to a 2-1 defeat.

The second point of note is just a heads-up over the upcoming friendlies due to take place the midweek before the season starts. The likes of Argentina take on Germany on Wednesday August 15, for example, and although the vast majority of us will be sweating on Sergio Aguero to get through the match without sustaining any sort of injury, it’s somewhat reassuring that the game will take place in Frankfurt – not Argentina, as some on the site fretted over yesterday. So no long flights on the agenda, then. A list of the full schedule is linked above.

That would potentially mean sitting with a Chel def on the bench in gw 3(assuming you have Torres and you are swapping him for Rooney in gw 2). I'm not sure I'm comfortable with that, but it could mean Terry-->Vidic/Baines?

I've burned myself with Baines before and don't have the patience to hang on to him. I think i bought and sold him twice last season, ending up missing his run of good scores and CS.

Terry/Baines/Vidic/Verm will always have a good run during a season. You just need to get your timing right.

It's an interesting strategy, but it means you have to take a hit and waste valuable transfers at the back, particularly as you will only have 3 defenders for GW3. Personally I'm thinking Ramires and one of Hazard/Mata/Lampard.

Am still planning on my mid-priced defender strategy I think but I'll get into it more when I get back on FPL

when I was last on FPL I had Petric as I have Michu. But am debating the possibility of getting Rafael in as my big hitting defender and using the cash elsewhere as IMO you lose thje most points in the defence so it makes more sense to get mid-priced options from fairly solid teams. The only thing that might change my mind is DDG, but it depends on if I find the money for him on Sunday.

i hate weak players.... hes just such a little man, no strength behind him, he also doesnt seem to have a left foot and ALWAYS take it back onto his right foot, cant shoot (apart from early in the seaosn where he scored 2 stunners v arsenal) and doesnt defend very well because of the afforementioned lack of testicles....

In short, i would rather have valencia on one side, anyone from Nani, cleverly, kagawa, the new lad, even bebe on the left than him.

I understand if you disagree, i just dont think he is the answer....

COLDPLAY... thoughts on 2nd striker spot?

Don't think we need to play a second striker. Just play Rooney up front with Kagawa in the hole behind Rooney. Welbeck links up good with Rooney but he lacks the finishing touch. So I would say Kagawa is a better choice.
As for Young, he may not be good at defending but he is a good dribbler of the ball and can pass/shoot aswel. For a winger all you need is pace and dribbling and he is good at that. Also curves in some beautiful crosses. I think he can give Nani a fight for a place on left wing.

Has anyone ever had any real success with defensive rotations in the past?

I've never gone with it personally and am stuck between just going with a strong defence (Something like De Gea, Cole, Lescott, Rafael) or a GK rotation and then either 2 x 2 or 1 3 player defence rotations..

Opinions from people who have been playing for a fair few seasons??

I don't rate this rotation thing much at all. I think two seasons ago Foster had a great FPL season for Birmingham? If you had rotated him you would have missed out on a heap of his points. He scored real well against the so called tougher teams...

Its built up over the last couple of seasons. All it takes is for a few people to get the wrong end of the stick and all of a sudden its gospel and someone's posting that De GEa and Hart have perfect rotation.... 😉

A couple of seasons ago the big bandwagon was all about how you should get lots of expensive defenders cos they were the best value for money etc etc.

I'm about 90% convinced he won't start. We will be more solid this year at the back, but Tierney won't get huge amounts of game time. Spend that extra .5 and get Russel Martin. Carries a very good attacking threat does Rusty

Oh, that's contrary to what I've heard other Norwich fans say actually. What do you see as the backline then? It's for a 4.0 position, I can't really have a Norwich defender at 4.5 tbh.

              I feel it should be:

              Bennet Turner Whittaker Martin

But if Whittaker doesn't make it to the first game, then Martin may be moved to CB and Tierney plays. I feel that for buying players like Whittaker and Turner, we won't keep them on the bench. Players like Bennet and Tierney won't play week in week out, and it's worth spending that extra .5 for a solid defender like Martin or even Fabio

Cheers dude, that's sound advice. I have 2 x 4.0 defenders in Gunter and Fonte and 2 x 4.5 in Fabio and Cuellar but was thinking Norwich might offer some value there, will give it a miss though as I don't see the point in risking it at 4.5 when the other two seem pretty good value. It was 4.0 or nowt for Norwich

It's not bad, got the basis of a good team, few criticisms:

      - Cech has a blank GW 3 and Cerny won't start so you'll either have to waste a transfer or go without a GK.

-Stam isn't a sure starter. Would prefer Fabio over Ferdinand.

      - Midfield is a bit weak.

all Cheslki have blank GW3 so transfers were designed to iron that out by then....cole, cech, torres is pretty decent firepower to improve the rest by the time the blank. comes around.

agree on tevez...but cost of kun kills the rest of the team.

So it seems like Wayne Rooney will have significant ownership GW1 and pretty much 100% ownership by GW2 around here if people stick to their plans. Is this because people positively believe he WILL start the season brilliantly or because they fear being left behind IF he does?

I've had him in my draft line-up since the start but I'm beginning to question whether he might be downgraded to free up funds elsewhere as I just don't fancy his early season form.

Yes, he started last season on fire (and I missed out 🙄 ) but in 10/11 he only scored 2 goals in his first 14 league appearances.

    For comparison 09/10 was a good start (6 in 9) 08/09 was poor (4 in 16) and 07/08 was average (4 in 11).

I also don't rate his fixtures that well:

GW1 Everton (a) - it's Well documented that he has a very poor record against Everton, especially at Goodison.
GW2 Fulham (h) - looks good, scored 4 in 5 years in this fixture.
GW3 Southampton (a) - in equivalent fixtures (away to the team promoted in second place) he's scored 2 in 5 years. Not brilliant.
GW4 Wigan (h) - looks ok but he hasn't scored in this fixture since 2009.
GW5 Liverpool (a) - very bad. He's only scored once away to Liverpool and that was in 2004/05.
GW6 Tottenham (h) - pretty good, 3 in 5 years against Spurs at Old Trafford.
GW7 Newcastle (a) - an average record against Newcastle but he hasn't scored against them since 2008/09.
GW8 Stoke (h) - don't expect points here. He's almost always rested against Stoke and on the 3 occasions he has played he hasn't scored.
GW9 Chelsea (a) - best fixture of the lot interestingly. 5 in 5 years at Stamford Bridge.
GW10 Arsenal (h) - a hat-trick last year but before that he only had 1 in 5 years in this fixture.

(The above stats all relate to league games only)

I'm by no means writing off his chances and the member's projections demonstrate there must be plenty of stats to support having him in from the start, I just think he isn't as essential as many seem to think.

Doubt I've changed anyone else's mind but I reckon I've got halfway to dropping him and boosting my midfield 🙂

I posted this mainly to challenge the apparent perceived wisdom of Rooney being vital from GW2. I think sometimes these things take on a life of their own and people select players/make transfers without really thinking it through for themselves. Not saying it's a bad move, just that it shouldn't be accepted without debate.

My main reason for getting him is that i want United attacking coverage and i don't want any of their midfielders for now. At least until I see who will be nailed on and who's on form.

That's fair enough, it's definitely a big risk to go without, I'm toying with taking a gamble on Kagawa though. Tricky...

Hey all, first post of the season and looking forward to it!

Just trying to get my head around all the new names, but just noticing seems to be a few of the same things that were discussed at the start of last season, which ended up being wrong, that are being considered again:
+ Over enthusiasm over new signings that are unproven in the league - Kagawa, Hazard, etc
+ Over enthusiasm over players that which had a few good weeks or runs are in new clubs and/or do not have proven consistency - Tarrabat, Siggy, Sess, Sinclair. Last year it was a mid of Sinclair, Tarabat, Hollahan which ended up being crazy
+ Not choosing proven consistent scorers potentially due to less than ideal fixtures or concerns over rotation or choosing newer players e.g. Silva, Rooney, ManU MF, Bale. This really burnt me early last year.

This is my team anyway, hopefully taking the above into consideration (but not putting all into practice due to budget). Comments welcome:

    Friedel / Green
    Cole, Clichy, Gunter, Macartney, Fonte
    Bale, Silva, Kagwa, Britton, Guthrie
    Augero, Torres (+2), Pog

    Thinking is:
GK - Good starting fixtures and reasonable price, rotation is ok for first 10 games
DEF - 2 consistent clean sheets and 3 x 4.0 cheapies that rotate and have good projected scores. Would have loved Lescott but can't find the 0.5
MID - 2 consistent scorers, 1 punt and 2 cheapies. I definitely do not want to risk having 2 big or 1 big with 2-3 punts e.g. Tarrabat, Sess, Michu as I have seen others have
FOR - 2 big guns and one ultra cheap with a double

Hopefully as I get team value I will be able to trade up some of the cheapies for the most consistent in their class. My goal is to get a min 50 points each week.

BTW - Thoughts on who this years Ryan Taylor will be?

Bit harsh but ok. Haven't seen a 10/10 team yet and all this crystal ball gazing most of us will still be badly wrong come weeks 1-3 (at least I was last year and hoping to be a bit less wrong this season). Good luck to you sir!

From memory they were not great from the start and picked up later. Could be the same this season or could be others, that's my view anyway, of course they could be great from the start this season and carry it on.

True. For me it is taking that step backing and thinking what will be the obvious scorers that I have missed. Am I going to be confident that on all lines there is likely to be higher than a 2 scored.

That's why I'm going Silva and Bale and would love Valencia as for met I have a lot more confidence in them than Michu, Sess, Sincaire, Tarrabatt which I see floating around a lot of teams. Having only 2 good with some of these guys seems crazy to me. Like last year I did not put in Nani or Ashley due to the bad MU fixtures and the promise of guys in the promoted teams. This was very bad and I'm trying not to do the same again this year.

+ Saving 2.0 in the bank for Torres > Rooney ;P

I think you'll find that all those cheap players will be very frustrating, and if they don't perform they may well drop in value leavign you with absolutely nowhere to go in order to improve them. I smell an unplanned early Wildcard.

Not unhappy about a wildcard in week 3 as this is where I made my money last year and set up well for the rest of the season.

But hopefully enough quality players in there that even if the cheapies bomb they will collect 2 points and occasionally more and I can change them to proven ones in the wild card or when I have a transfer after I have made more than 100.00. Just think if you pay 5.0 or even 4.5 for defenders from the start you compromise a lot in the rest of the team and they may still not keep clean sheets (very hard to do).

What's your exit strategy for Pog? I know he has a DGW but his scoring record is mediocre and I can see you wanting to get rid before long.

No exit strategy. If he does really poorly I will play 2 cheap defenders or 5 in the mid more. If he does well then I will get funds to upgrade.

Paying 6.0 and higher for a 3rd striker really seems to reduce what you can do in the rest of the team at the start when you only have a 100 and I don't know who this years Carrol or Ba will be at the moment so Pog if fine and he has a DGW and reasonable fixtures for the first 10.

Fair enough but I prefer to have the mid-priced third striker option as it makes switching to this year's Carroll or Ba that much easier.

That is a good point and my 3 big misses last year were Ryan Taylor, Ba early and Cisse early.

But to have that mid prized striker means that you give up somewhere in Mid or Defence. So you could be stuck with a mediocre striker and a mid/defender. Also if the next Ba or Carroll is even 0.5 or 1.0 higher then all that was for nothing.

I prefer my approach and I can still save a transfer and use 2 in one week to get someone that really fires while being more confident in who I downgrade to in the other slot.

Yeah but it would be Kagawa for someone I'm not confident in. At least Kagawa is Man U midfield. Ideally I will find a way to get Valencia instead.

For example I dropped Tevez on the Aguero friendly news yesterday and could get Lescott, Valencia, Noble and Hengland. That may still be the way I end up going but considering captaincy contributes about 30-40% to a typical weekly score I would rather have Aggero and the current rather than those players.

IMO too many players with rick bottom prices, you'll be forced to play some crap players each week.
you make some good points about the teams that people are picking and then go for Kagawa.
If Sess continues to play where he is there is no way he is 'a punt'. I would say that Sinclair is proven to get points as well
      6/10 from me

Fair enough. I accept I will play at least 1 crap defender and 1 mid each week until I have money to replace them and am confident that the mid price option I am choosing. For example Cellular which is in a lot of teams, we have no idea whether Sunderland will keep many clean sheets at the start this season. He could be no better than my 4.0. Same can be said for Hengerland at Fullam at 5.0. Sure he should do better but will he actually? Last year no one saw early that Swansea and Newcastle would be the rocks at the back. After a few weeks it was clear what the cheap and good assets were. For now its all guesses so why not guess cheap?

I specifically said I don't practice all what I preach due to budget. I would love Valencia but can't find the 0.5 so Kagawa is my one punt. Not it is 1 punt in Mid not 2 or 3.

Well Sess for me is still not as consistent as Silva, Bale, Valencia etc. If he has a good season this year then he probably will be but not for now IMO.

Thanks for the 6 🙂 Hope your team does better!

Fergie says United will line-up as Jones-Vidic-Rio-Evra for European tour. Man U website says this may be the line-up vs. Everton also.

So Vidic fit and Rafael riskier than perhaps thought (I know he's at the Olympics but just from what the website says)
