Aston Villa maintain their unbeaten start under Paul Lambert, with Brett Holman amongst the goals again in a 2-0 win at Peterborough, while Stoke have to settle for a draw in Kansas after Asmir Begovic is beaten by a deflected header from more than 30 yards out.

Peterborough 0 Aston Villa 2
With his central defensive options somewhat limited, Paul Lambert fielded Nathan Baker and Chris Herd in the heart of the back-four for the trip to Peterborough last night. Shay Given returned between the posts, Enda Stevens continued at left-back ahead of Stephen Warnock, while Charles N’Zogbia was handed an advance role in attack alongside Andreas Weimann. Daniel Johnson was handed starting role on the left flank and was first to threaten before N’Zogbia had an effort saved from the edge of the box. The former Wigan man fired wide, while Stevens also went close to scoring before Villa’s attacks finally proved dividend, with Johnson slotting home an Eric Lichaj cross. Stevens was praised highly for his display by the club’s official website, with his attacking threat a constant menace to the hosts – if he can cement a place in Lambert’s starting XI, he could be an intriguing option at 4.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL). His cut-back to Stephen Ireland allowed the midfielder to tee up Brett Holman for Villa’s second – the Australian international is now his side’s top scorer in pre-season, with a couple of goals under his belt.

While the result continued Villa’s unbeaten start under the new managers, Lambert was left reeling yesterday evening with the news that Richard Dunne and Gabby Agbonlahor are both set to be sidelined for the start of the season. The centre-half is out for six to eight weeks after undergoing a groin operation – with Carlos Cuellar and James Collins both leaving during the summer, new boy Ron Vlaar already looks a key player in the heart of defence. Agbonlahor will be missing from action for four to five weeks due to a knee injury sustained earlier in pre-season.

Aston Villa Starting XI: Given; Lichaj, Herd, Baker (Clark, 81), Stevens (Warnock, 81); Delph (Bannan, 70); Carruthers (El Ahmadi, 70), Ireland (Burke, 81), Johnson (Holman70); Weimann, N’Zogbia (Delfouneso, 74).

Kansas 1 Stoke 1
Kenwyne Jones was handed a role alongside Peter Crouch last night, with Jonathan Walters shifted to the left wing. Robert Huth began the game at right-back but was subbed off for Ryan Shotton on 18 minutes after picking up a knock but returned to replace Ryan Shawcross after the break in the heart of defence. Jones and Crouch both had chances to score but failed to trouble the keeper as the first-half finished goalless – Jones than made way for Cameron Jerome shortly after half-time. The Potters began to take control in the second 45 and created chances aplenty; Walters, Jerome and Huth came close, while Crouch was presented with a trio of opportunities to break the deadlock but failed to take any. Tony Pulis made a number of changes as the game progressed and it was substitute Michael Tonge who eventually gave the visitors the advantage, slotting home from the spot after being fouled in the box. Stoke looked to have the game wrapped up but it finished all-square after an Asmir Begovic clearance struck the head of a Kansas player over 30 yards away and flew past the stopper deep into time added on.

Stoke Starting XI: Begovic; Huth (Shotton 18), Shawcross (Huth 46), Upson, Wilson; Etherington (Delap 69), Whitehead (Arismendi 73), Palacios (Ness 55), Walters (Tonge 77); Crouch (Sidibe 65), Jones (Jerome 50).

In Other News
Everton gave a handful of first-team players a run-out for their match with Tranmere in the Liverpool Senior Cup Final. David Moyes handed the likes of Seamus Coleman and Jack Rodwell 90 minutes apiece, while Ross Barkley and Apostolos Vellios also featured for the Toffees – the latter’s goal wasn’t enough to stop his side from slipping to a 2-1 defeat.

The second point of note is just a heads-up over the upcoming friendlies due to take place the midweek before the season starts. The likes of Argentina take on Germany on Wednesday August 15, for example, and although the vast majority of us will be sweating on Sergio Aguero to get through the match without sustaining any sort of injury, it’s somewhat reassuring that the game will take place in Frankfurt – not Argentina, as some on the site fretted over yesterday. So no long flights on the agenda, then. A list of the full schedule is linked above.

Anyone think getting a 4.5 million third striker spot is a good idea...wtahc your midfield fill up with top players?

I dunno. I feel there is way too much potential in the strikers not to spend a minimum of 24.0 on your strikers. It's not like a few years ago where we had amazing choices in midfield like CR7, Lampard and Gerrard where we would be stingy on the forwards, I think that potential is now with the strikers and there is a little uncertainty with the mids, hence why it might not be great to have a cheap striker

I am sorry, but I think its pretty bad. You will have to play Schwarzer all the time because Cerny wont play. ShawX has bad fixtures. Cabaye and Toure arent good FPL wise. Pog Britton and Gorks are OK, but could do better, Gorks isnt nailed on and it will be hard to get rid of Pog as no other starting strikers are 5.0 and Britton might loose his place, also isnt good FPL wise

So far this week Spurs have been linked with Steklenberg, Julio Cesar & Lloris. All these players have one thing in common - they'll be bought to be Spurs' number 1. So where does this leave Friedel? If a signing is made before the season starts then you'd have to assume Friedel will be number 2. If the new keeper comes in at 5.5 (which they should) then theres no problem. If theyre more expesive then id ratehr go elsewhere.

More importantly if Spurs have not signed a new keeper by GW1 i would not be comfortable having Friedel in the sticks incase they make a signing before GW2 or GW3.

In short i loved the Friedel & Federici combo but now its a no go for me. If they get a new number 1 and hes 5.5 then ill jump on but either way Friedel will not be in my starting team.

I have Arsenal cover from GW1.

      Koscielny Diaby Podolski

By the way, in my experience, it's the minnows that Arsenal tends to struggle against. They beat the likes of City, Chelsea and Spurs and then go lose to a team like Stoke or West Brom.

11th. I reckon Jones will start if we keep the tour defence the same for the remaining games. Jones-Vidic-Rio-Evra

Can't see Rafa starting vs Everton if the above 4 are fit for the 1st game. Agree man, it's annoying that Smalling is out as he can cover both RB and CB better than Jones 🙁

I love how everyone comes on here like, I've nailed it, my team is flawless.

3 or 4 comments then follow pointing out problems and critiques that are pretty much all based on personal opinions and factless based facts.

I think the most important thing to do at this stage is to balance how you spread your money throughout your team. I'm now trying to aim for:

    GKs & Defenders - 36mil
    Midfielders - 36mil
    Forwards - 28mil

I certainly agree that strategy is the most fruitful area of discussion, and I'd rather listen to successful old timers about that. Speculation about the returns of individual players is much more subjective.

Wise words my friend. Until the first couple gameweeks are over it's really impossible to pick the "perfect" team that everyone is looking for. Forward planning is key at this stage, not the best GW1 team.

Guys, we're still 16 days away, we are kidding ourselves if we think we won't tinker at least a little with our teams until lockout.

Starting to look like I'm going into GW1 with no Arsenal cover and with Sunderland at home our first game that seems stupid...

Is it better to think short term and get some coverage for the start of the season or think over the first 5 or 6 games and just admit other teams fixtures look more appealing? 😐

Can't really see who you pick from Arsenal though, apart from Koscielny.

Even if he goes, with Carzola and Sahin likely to come in, I think we'll be starting the season off with our strongest squad in a long time..

Turns out Fulham have signed some 16 year old from PSG named Moussa Dembele

So how would you distinguish him from the other Dembele?

But I quite like the team. Personally, I'd feel more secure with a bigger forward line. I think that's where the safe points are.

Finding a bigger forward isn't coming easily with fixture list.... In terms of well priced forwards Dont fancy Welbeck, Torres any Tottenham forwards....
          Newcastle fixtures shite...

defence is too expensive, attack is too weak.

not a fan of yaya toure either, better attacking minded midfielders out there for his price imo.
      Ben arfa for one.

Keepers aren't good IMO. I'd save 0.5 from Schwarzer.

Cahill risky but could pay off. Decent gamble.

Williams is 5.0, yes? Downgrade and save more.

Michu - not for me, too risky. Better options at 6.5.

Use the money left to upgrade Holt.
