Aston Villa maintain their unbeaten start under Paul Lambert, with Brett Holman amongst the goals again in a 2-0 win at Peterborough, while Stoke have to settle for a draw in Kansas after Asmir Begovic is beaten by a deflected header from more than 30 yards out.

Peterborough 0 Aston Villa 2
With his central defensive options somewhat limited, Paul Lambert fielded Nathan Baker and Chris Herd in the heart of the back-four for the trip to Peterborough last night. Shay Given returned between the posts, Enda Stevens continued at left-back ahead of Stephen Warnock, while Charles N’Zogbia was handed an advance role in attack alongside Andreas Weimann. Daniel Johnson was handed starting role on the left flank and was first to threaten before N’Zogbia had an effort saved from the edge of the box. The former Wigan man fired wide, while Stevens also went close to scoring before Villa’s attacks finally proved dividend, with Johnson slotting home an Eric Lichaj cross. Stevens was praised highly for his display by the club’s official website, with his attacking threat a constant menace to the hosts – if he can cement a place in Lambert’s starting XI, he could be an intriguing option at 4.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL). His cut-back to Stephen Ireland allowed the midfielder to tee up Brett Holman for Villa’s second – the Australian international is now his side’s top scorer in pre-season, with a couple of goals under his belt.

While the result continued Villa’s unbeaten start under the new managers, Lambert was left reeling yesterday evening with the news that Richard Dunne and Gabby Agbonlahor are both set to be sidelined for the start of the season. The centre-half is out for six to eight weeks after undergoing a groin operation – with Carlos Cuellar and James Collins both leaving during the summer, new boy Ron Vlaar already looks a key player in the heart of defence. Agbonlahor will be missing from action for four to five weeks due to a knee injury sustained earlier in pre-season.

Aston Villa Starting XI: Given; Lichaj, Herd, Baker (Clark, 81), Stevens (Warnock, 81); Delph (Bannan, 70); Carruthers (El Ahmadi, 70), Ireland (Burke, 81), Johnson (Holman70); Weimann, N’Zogbia (Delfouneso, 74).

Kansas 1 Stoke 1
Kenwyne Jones was handed a role alongside Peter Crouch last night, with Jonathan Walters shifted to the left wing. Robert Huth began the game at right-back but was subbed off for Ryan Shotton on 18 minutes after picking up a knock but returned to replace Ryan Shawcross after the break in the heart of defence. Jones and Crouch both had chances to score but failed to trouble the keeper as the first-half finished goalless – Jones than made way for Cameron Jerome shortly after half-time. The Potters began to take control in the second 45 and created chances aplenty; Walters, Jerome and Huth came close, while Crouch was presented with a trio of opportunities to break the deadlock but failed to take any. Tony Pulis made a number of changes as the game progressed and it was substitute Michael Tonge who eventually gave the visitors the advantage, slotting home from the spot after being fouled in the box. Stoke looked to have the game wrapped up but it finished all-square after an Asmir Begovic clearance struck the head of a Kansas player over 30 yards away and flew past the stopper deep into time added on.

Stoke Starting XI: Begovic; Huth (Shotton 18), Shawcross (Huth 46), Upson, Wilson; Etherington (Delap 69), Whitehead (Arismendi 73), Palacios (Ness 55), Walters (Tonge 77); Crouch (Sidibe 65), Jones (Jerome 50).

In Other News
Everton gave a handful of first-team players a run-out for their match with Tranmere in the Liverpool Senior Cup Final. David Moyes handed the likes of Seamus Coleman and Jack Rodwell 90 minutes apiece, while Ross Barkley and Apostolos Vellios also featured for the Toffees – the latter’s goal wasn’t enough to stop his side from slipping to a 2-1 defeat.

The second point of note is just a heads-up over the upcoming friendlies due to take place the midweek before the season starts. The likes of Argentina take on Germany on Wednesday August 15, for example, and although the vast majority of us will be sweating on Sergio Aguero to get through the match without sustaining any sort of injury, it’s somewhat reassuring that the game will take place in Frankfurt – not Argentina, as some on the site fretted over yesterday. So no long flights on the agenda, then. A list of the full schedule is linked above.

Expensive? You can get in for cheaper via Lescott/Clichy

The difference between a 7.0 GK and a 4.5 Gk is like 40 points over the season (excluding rotation), the difference between a 6.5 mid and a 9.0 mid could be over 60 points.

    Can anyone suggest improvements please?

    DDG/Federici

Cole/Lescott/ [Demel/Fonte/Gunter] rotating 1 of these depending on fixtures

Kagawa/Hazard/Sinclair [Maloney/Noble] rotating 1 of these depending on fixtures

    Rooney/Aguero/Graham

    Nothing in the bank.

Figure I have coverage for form 6.5m mids with Sinclair, and plan to drop Hazard for Bale GW1

As it stands the WHU defence will most likely be:

          McCartney Reid Tomkins Demel

But Taylor can play at left back if big Sam decides to play Vaz Te on the left side. If you're going to invest in our defence I'd go for Tomkins as he's usually the targeted player in corners and will probably get a fair few bonus points. He's £4.5m so if you need a £4m defender from somewhere then I'd go for Clyne

unlikely to happen but say a scenario occured where chelsea bought a player before gwk1 from another PL club and he was nailed on to start (RVP for example)

would you be tempted to pick a team before FPL update him with 3 chelsea players and RVP while hes registered as an arsenal player, fill your team with man city fulham and reading players so just go all out for gwk1 with 7 doublers

      and then wildcard gwk2?

      or would that be unethical?

i think it depends how many points you would expect to gain, if you realistically think that by going all out on chelsea city and reading you could gain 30+ points then it would be well worth it

He SHOULD in my opinion, but he will definitely get the first 3-4 as Parker is injured. That said, he's clearly a defending midfielder and unlikely to bring consistent point. Love him as a player, though.

fantasy football is all about risks, graham is a guaranteed starter so is vorm + guthrie. Even though clichy rotates with kolarov at times he should still get atleast 30 games and atleast 12cs. Holman is villa's top scorer in pre-season and as an Australian I know he is very influential and creative player and loves to be involved in attacking.

As an Everton fan, I'd say he's not a nailed on starter, with Fellaini, Rodwell, Osman, Pienaar, and now Naismith vying for places. He also didn't provide many goals or assists last season as Moyes tended to play him deep.
However, I think he's a likely starter, as I think Fellaini may be pushed further forward now that Cahill is gone, and Rodwell is bound to pick up an injury at some point.

Yeah that's why I sent the 3-5-2 rout, and cheap mids seem a better bet than defs. How can Valencia/Hazard/Siggy etc be the same price as Evra and co? Madness!

Considered Torres but he seems dear in Tele and Sky given his record? And Hazard cheap. Siggy a steal, Valencia cheap compared to Nani too.

New to this ...... So a question to you old hands- historically how have teams massively weighted up front performed, for example:

              Howard-federici
              Hangerland-Clyne -Demel-Harte-Fabio
              Bale-pienaar-Kagawa-Michu-Noble
              Torres(+2m)- Aguero- Jelavic

Thinking usual GW1 rotation. Play 3/4/3 rotating budget defenders so most play at home then let the big dogs get assists and goals...... method or madness?

Like your front 3 but expensive
Mids Kagawa is a punt but i have gone for him too
Weak at back other than Hang
Downgrade Jelavic to petric or graham bring in Cuellar Collocini instead of Demel & harte if can afford

Without going into specific players, do you guys think it's better to leave a slightly inferior player in (albeit with potential for points) the first week with a bit of extra money (1.5) in the bank so you have more flexibility come GW2? I'm not doing Torres to Rooney as I've already got him so that's not in the equation.

I've got 1.5 in the bank, and I'm happy that it allows me to sort out problems.

But I'm as likely to spend it all and wildcard in GW2...

              1. Rooney and Silva and a weakish defence
              2. Tevez and Kagawa/Valencia and a stronger defence

I know this isn't very specific, but at the moment my defence/keepers are fairly poor. A few extra mill can really buff it up

Just watched a video showing all of Haxard's goals and assists from last season. A lot of them came from set pieces which he won't get as much of at Chelsea. Is that a problem?

I'm not sure about Haxard, about I think Hazard will find a way around it. In saying that, if Lampard isn't on the field, it will be Hazard vs Mata for free kicks, which they'll probably interchange between each other

                  So, 7.0 or less midfielder?
Pienaar - good for Everton last season, pretty poor every other season, flash in the pan or sign of things to come?
Larsson - set pieces, probably penalties, decent fixtures but doesn't offer much outside of his dead ball specialties.
Sinclair - on penalties and probably free-kicks with no Sigurdsson there, good fixtures but his returns from outside the box last season were limited.
                  Anyone else? Michu maybe?

N'Zog will be on direct free kicks and is now under an attacking manager (Lambert), plus he was handed that advanced role last night. If I had an extra .5, I'd upgrade Taarabt to N'Zog

Taarabt will also be on direct free kicks, and penalties. Looking at his stats in the members area, I can't see Taarabt being as poor as hew as last year. I'm not convinced on N'Zogbia, Lambert loves his midfield rotation and he was very average last year.

Good point on the midfield rotation. I suppose for .5, they will probably end up getting close to the same amount of points over the course of the season

prefer mcclean over larsson but i think it's better not to go with either of them right now.

pienaar's got some tough fixtures but he showed towards the end of last season that he's fixture proof(kind of) and picking players who had a good finish last year is the way to go imo

                    so, pienaar it is

                    McClean is a great option..
Would only choose Larsson ahead of him if Sunderland buys a good striker (Fletcher?)
Pienaar i also a great option, might go for him if/when i transfer Jelavic out

For those thinking of a City defender, who are you going for out of Kompany / Clchy / Lescott?

I currently have Kompany, as not sure Lescott or Clichy are absolutely nailed on. What about Toure / Kolarov coming in for odd games?

If Man City play that back 3, Lescott will play week in week out. Even if they don't, I'm sure he'll play. However, if Man City do sign Agger, then I'll probably get Clichy in

To back up your 'not nailed on' points: I had Lescott in to begin with, but with all the rumors about City signing another central defender, whether it be Skrtel, Agger or someone else, I decided to take him out. 6.5 is way too much to risk on a rotation threatened defender.

It's also worth noting that even if Kolarov leaves, this doesn't 'guarantee' Clichy will play every game, they could still occasionally line up with Richards at right back, and Zabaleta at left back. Just a thought.

My summary is that unless it's Hart or Kompany from the City defensive options, I'd be hesitant to feel safe in my choice!
