Having brought you the pre-match team news ahead of Wednesday’s Gameweek 34 fixtures, we planned to do the same for Thursday’s sole Premier League clash between Brighton and Hove Albion and Manchester United.

We’ve only got the fitness latest from one camp, however, after Roberto De Zerbi’s midweek presser was cancelled due to his illness.

BRIGHTON AND HOVE ALBION

What we do know about the Seagulls is that Tariq Lamptey (knee), Jeremy Sarmiento (ankle), Adam Lallana (thigh) and Jakub Moder (knee) are definitely out, while Joel Veltman (hamstring) is a fresh concern from the weekend.

Speaking after full-time in the 6-0 thrashing of Wolverhampton Wanderers, De Zerbi said that Veltman was a concern.

“This is my mistake because I should have substituted him before. I hope it will be a small problem. It’s important for us, especially in this moment, because we are playing without Lamptey and I would like to have one chance more to decide the first XI.

“With or without Joel changes a lot of things because only [Pascal] Gross can play as a right-back. We are working to make other solutions in case we lose some more players because we play with [Billy] Gilmour, Gross at right-back or in midfield.” – Roberto De Zerbi, on Saturday

Evan Ferguson (foot) could be close to a comeback, although he wasn’t training completely with his team-mates as recently as last Friday.

“Ferguson, I don’t know at the moment. I have to repeat, I don’t want to take any risk with him for two reasons: because we have another seven games after tomorrow and because he is a very young player. I don’t want to joke with the players, especially if they’re very young.

“[Ferguson] is not completely in the group, but he is better.” – Roberto De Zerbi, last Friday

MANCHESTER UNITED

Raphael Varane (foot), Lisandro Martinez (fractured metatarsal), Scott McTominay (unspecified), Tom Heaton (ankle) and Donny van de Beek (knee) remain out, while the game comes too soon for Alejandro Garnacho (foot) despite the young winger’s return to training.

“I think we have one training [session], but I think it’s too soon to be available. I think he is short [of full fitness]. I think he needs some training and then, in short notice, he will be available.” – Erik ten Hag on Alejandro Garnacho

Ten Hag added that Varare could be back sooner – but not in time for Gameweek 35 – than McTominay, which could have implications for Victor Lindelof and/or Luke Shaw.

As good as that partnership has been at centre-half of late, Varane – when fit – will ultimately either challenge for Lindelof’s spot or allow Shaw to return to left-back duties by partnering the Swede.

If Shaw does get a stint at full-back in the closing weeks, then Diogo Dalot and Aaron Wan-Bissaka are back competing for one spot on the opposite flank.

“The prognosis, I think Rapha is closer than Scott McTominay in this moment. But still they are, for the coming two games, they are not available.” – Erik ten Hag

With João Pedro heading to Brighton for a record fee, what do you think happens with their current forwards next season? Europe still a good possibility so having plenty of options is definitely good, especially with someone like Welbeck there who needs to be managed. But I wonder if Ferguson might be a bit disappointed by it given he just signed a new contract. Wonder if Undav be allowed to leave

There's probably 150m+ of outgoings so cannot possibly speculate on what the team will look like next season.
Brighton are acutely aware of Ferguson and his potential to be one of the best 9s in world football so Pedro purchase will have no effect on his development imo.

I'd imagine the vast majority of those will be in midfield though. Ferguson will be there and I'd be surprised if Welbeck leaves and Enciso seems to be being moulded to take the 10 role after MacAllister goes. Not that I think Ferguson will miss out much as there will be plenty of minutes on offer especially if they get a European spot, but long-term I suppose it may mean they'll expect to sell him summer 2024

      A funny one from Bellingham. Here's why;

      1) Turning down the chance for guaranteed minutes (Gundo and Bernardo may both leave)

      2) Turning down the chance to work with the eras best coach - Pep Guardiola

      3) Turning down the chance to reunite with Haaland and Akanji, missing out on the possibility of linking up with fellow England internationals Grealish, Foden, Stones, Walker etc and missing the opportunity of playing alongside arguably the best midfielder to ever grace the PL (I'm talking about KDB)

      4) and the Premier League is the most competitive league in the world!!

      Instead;
      1) No guarantee of minutes (madrids midfield is stacked!)
      2) Who's he really going to be learning from, developing his skills with, deepening his understanding of football with? (Pep would offer this).
      3) He might follow the same path as Camavinga and Tchou with limited minutes

I'll take the Modric and Kroos bit, not so sure with ancelotti but hey ho.

Think long term though- Modric and Kroos won't be there forever

Can't agree with a lot of this personally.

        - Nobody has guaranteed minutes at City, especially new signings. Haaland is pretty much the only new signing in recent years that has gone straight into the first team and hasn't left, everyone else has either gotten next to no minutes in their first season (Phillips) or pretty restricted (Mahrez, Grealish). Either or both of Gundogan and Silva may stay too, you saying they "may" leave as guarantee of minutes isn't exactly definitive.

        - He could have the chance to work with Ancelotti, who is also one of the best coaches in the game

        - Who is he going to learn from? Modric and Kroos, two of the main cogs in one of the most successful modern European teams of the last number of decades? A manager that has worked with (and gotten the best out of) players like Pirlo, Zidane, Lampard and Ronaldinho?

        - Modric and Kroos are close to completing their careers, just like Tchouamemi and Camavinga, he'll be at the centre of the Madrid team for years to come. Restricted minutes in his first season while he settles is the exact same thing he'll deal with at City

        1. TanN
          • 4 Years
          2 years, 8 months ago

Yes as you've said I said Gundo and Bernardo might be leaving so game time would then be unrestricted. Even if they stayed I do think Bellingham would slot straight into the City system very much like how Haaland, Akanji, KDB have done.

The who's he gonna learn from was a little sarcastic of me - of course he had modric and kroos. But they're very old now, and as you say Bellingham will have limited minute at Real Madrid in the first season- and therefore will he ever play alongside them long enough to learn from them??

It's been a while since a player turns down Pep and more money I must say...

          1. Nate(U)dog(ie)
            • 5 Years
            2 years, 7 months ago

Even KDB didn't go straight into the first team without restricted time in his first season, he still only started 22/38, and that was also 8 years ago too and wasn't under Pep. I think he'll get plenty of time with Modric and Kroos, and even then he doesn't have to play every game with them, plenty of learning there outside of matchdays too.

I thought I remembered seeing something recently enough saying he had no interest in teams like City or Chelsea (not sure if the implication was too much money being spent or bloated squads or what), maybe there was something to it

                They've literally spent £52m on Endrick who's 16.

That's a similar amount to what KDB cost us!!

I know, it might have been a bs article (I didn't read it as I didn't really trust the source) and it doesn't make much sense. Maybe it's to do with the source of the money or something

Jota was a bad pick (I got him too), but 4 points for the DGW could have been worse.

Got Solanke to come off the bench and bang a hattrick against the worst team in the league, so not all bad.

      A. Jota to Kane. Save in 36 and then 2FT for 37. Can move Salah to Bruno for double and consider Grealish to mid of your choice depending on injury/form/rotation and who still has something to play for in the final 2 GWs. You look in great shape for the run in with your attackers.

I'd bench Grealish ahead of Mitoma. Either won't start, minutes will be managed with Madrid in the week, or he'll just flat out blank.

Can't make a good case to play Trippier atm.

De Gea vs Martinez a bit of a coin toss - double Villa defence a bit much, but looking at the picks in isolation, I think it's fair.

I think you'll find we don't 'buy up the best players and run away with league every year'.

Think about it - besides the £100m we spent on Grealish, most of City's big signings have been about £40-60m.

And also we never normally buy an end product - arguably with the exception of Haaland and Grealish.

Had you heard of Dias or Rodri in the years prior to City's interest? I hadn't!?

Julian Alvarez is another one - before City signed him had anyone heard of him? No? I thought so. He cost £14m.

        I'll let that sink in.

Oh and we have one of the lowest net spends of big PL teams.

Sludge is an expert on this as he's had to defend Chelsea buying trophies the last 20 years. Before that he was there to witness his team in division 2 with a dog track being sold for £1.

Tann I highly doubt you were there in the Maine Road days in the third tier of English football or have ever even been to the Etihad. So I'll take your lack of "knowledge" with a pinch of salt.
