Nunez has the higher ceiling based on having the highest non-penalty expected goals+assists figure in entire league last season. Gakpo appeared to overperform on finishing therefore potentially unsustainable, also he has dropped into an attacking midfield role in both friendlies.

The latter point was probably because Slobby wasn't ready to start. The next game should indicate where Gakpo plays.

I was on the Darwin train early last season and that didn’t end well. He gets into great positions but just isn’t clinical.

Definite wait and see for me, Watkins has his slot for now.

    What GK option is best?

    A) Johnstone and Martínez rotation

(shu, EVE, bur, WOL, CPL, FUL, BHA, NFO/wol)

    B) Onana and Flekken

(WOL, ful, NFO, BOU, BHA, EVE, CPL, BRE)

    C) Flekken and bank 1m to start the season

(TOT, ful, CPL, BOU, new, EVE, nfo, mun)

Seems nobody shares my perspective on keepers. I don't accept this cliche of "never WASTE a transfer on a keeper". I'll start with one with good opening fixtures then use a transfer on him just like other player when another with the better form and fixtures emerges.

      1. Hairy Potter
        • 9 Years

FT is a FT in my opinion. If someone needs moving then why not the keeper.

        1. Andy_Social

Quite so. And yet you never read or hear that view on here or in videos.

I'm currently on a 5.0m keeper with the view that I can move around Onana, Ramsdale, Kepa, Martinez even downgrade to the outstanding 4.5 as and when.

      2. LangerznMash

Totally agree. Attacking the fixtures (short term) is better than a long term 'set and forget', and also releases budget to spend outfield.

Agreed. Plus keeper rotation has never ended well for me. Just pick one and swap him if it doesn't work out.

    2. TheTinman
      • 8 Years

The difference between the top 10 keepers is
      166pts Raya
      121pts Ederson
      45pts

      Top 10 defenders
      198pts Trippier
      128pts Estupinan
      70pts

      Top 10 midfielders (Without Salah)
      212pts Odegaard
      154pts Trossard
      58pts

Top 10 strikers (Without Kane or Haaland)
      182pts Toney
      100pts Isak
      82pts

Obviously this is crude and rudimentary but the general consensus is there are more points to be won/lost in other positions on the pitch. Swapping the GK is a luxury move and it always will be.

It depends how you set up your squad. It's quite easy to set up a squad of set and forgets so you should have plenty of spare FT (Mitoma, Fernandes, Jesus, Shaw), or you can go more maverick (Enciso, Sterling, Darwin, Chilwell) where you will have less spare FT.

Depends how you play the game, no right or wrong answer.

      1. LangerznMash
        • 7 Years

This analysis is season long and doesn't account for the potential of picking up pockets of good form. If you broke the season into four quarters then you would find £4.5m goalkeepers with better points total for each quarter than Raya had (41.5points per quarter). So transferring you GK just 3 times throughout the season could give you a much higher points total overall. 3 transfers isn't much at all, and realistically it would only use 1 x FT as two of the changes would likely part as part of your wildcards.

        1. TheTinman
          • 8 Years
          9 months, 8 days ago

Obviously you have the option to change on the two wildcards, that's fine. You're talking about only 1 transfer for a keeper now, that's obviously manageable but I don't think that falls into the short term fixture strategy being implied in these comments.

Anyway, breaking it up into quarters the pts swings in other positions are likely to be more. So it is nearly always better to use the FT on other players.

There's also the argument that keepers do well in poor fixtures, not sure if I buy into that one or not.

This definitely seems an area which needs some genuine analysis - it's just not a sexy area so nobody does it.

There are a couple of unknown quantities that are pending as we wait for more pre-season info - Foden, Darwin, Evan F, Enciso
Enciso can become Mitoma and Darwin, Nkunu/Watkins,

    TAA, Stones, Shaw
    Saka, Foden, Bruno, Enciso
    Evan F, Darwin, Haaland

    Areola, Gibbs-White, Cash, Bell

One key difference is Saliba being back, and probably Timber too. With Holding on the pitch in the RCB position, practically every time he got the ball he passed it into the direction he was facing which was the left, so Saka had next to no service, then had to go out of position to look for it. Saliba can pass in any direction and happily plays out towards the right a lot more (thus involving White and Odegaard more too which also helps Saka), and that too makes it more difficult for the opposition knowing that Arsenal can and will build up from any angle

Ah yes, now I remember. There was a graphic of passing lines showing how Holding was skewing everything to the other flank. I think this was definitely a big part of it

He was still getting the ball in attacking areas at more-or-less the same rate as he was in the previous 28 games (36 vs 34 touches in the attacking third per 90) and that's with the Bournemouth game inflating the 'previous' segment.

        1. Nate(U)dog(ie)
          • 3 Years

From what I saw (thinking in particular about the game at the Olympic Stadium), he still got touches on the ball but I saw mostly him getting the ball with his back to goal (as opposed to before where he'd be facing it or running towards it), when he was extremely wide, or when he was effectively being used to enable White's overlaps. It was a vast difference to before

Fair - think Arsenal were just completely rattled by that point too. Just dropped points to Liverpool in embarrassing and it was clear City were catching them. Gabriel giving stupid pens away and Saka missing his own, just complete mental collapse.

Still needs to be put in the context of the end of the title race and so on. I think its pretty obvious that he's underpriced and a near-certainty to outscore the vast majority of players on your list, but I probably wouldn't say 'essential'

This. Especially with the IB after GW4 and fixture swings around then, pick whoever you can from those teams or aim for picks that have the potential to be good long term (probably for attacking potential) and reassess after the break once we've seen a few games from everyone

Villa are absolutely a wait-and-see for me. Their centre-half pairing is made up of the Spanish Lindelof and a player coming back from a huge injury, so absolutely no PL experience there, and they'll have human slug Tielemans in front of them. Just can't see it working immediately, if at all.

        1. Hairy Potter

Newcastle, who looked out of sorts experimenting with 3-4-2-1, found a lot of joy with balls over the top against Villa's high line. Villa looked great on the ball though and passing from the back.

Not sure where Tielemens fits in for Villa. Douglas Luiz and Kamara are better defensive midfielders in my opinion. Emery likes to use McGinn tactically to exploit any weaknesses in the opposition.

Emery is a great manager so I'm sure he'll sort it, I just wonder how they're going to fare at first, especially with Newcastle and Liverpool away in their initial fixtures. Could easily end up getting battered and needing a re-think.

            1. Hairy Potter

Villa played through the Newcastle high press worryingly well at Villa Park and in the friendly the other day. The game at SJP last season, before Emery properly took over, was an easy game for Newcastle where they got the ball high up the pitch and overwhelmed Villa.

Not sure how much kidology there was from Howe using the Villa game to trial 3-4-2-1 to throw Emery a curve ball, with the GW1 game in mind.

Best 6m or lower mid/forward that I'd be starting 90% f the time? Currently thinking between Buendia, Wissa and Joao Pedro

With Villa strengthening their flanks, Buendia may not be nailed, same as J pedro. Only Wissa of those 3 is.

      I think I’ve cracked it!

      Onana, Areola
      TAA, Gabriel, Henry, Baldock, Beyer
      Rashford, Bruno, Saka, Foden, Nakamba
      Haaland, Nkunku, Wissa

Don’t understand why you’d go Henry when Pinnock is the same price. Baldock probably won’t start as Bogle is preferred there (which everyone seems to be ignoring). So you’re going to be left weak at the back a lot.

I do like the front 7 but then again you’ve perhaps got a few too many risky picks (Nkunku, Wissa, Foden, Utd double up)

        1. Tomerick
          • 9 Years

Yeah Henry could be Pinnock. I’d heard he might not be 100% nailed but he served me well last season.

Thanks for the Baldock info I wasn’t aware of that.

Foden could be any other 7.5. I’m monitoring Maddison. Nkunku is my gut saying he’s going to fly and unless Brentford sign a striker, I think Wissa will be gold too.

I'm still not convinced by Anderson, just seems to be lacking pace for me, but technically gifted. Miley looks a better prospect. The assist vs Gateshead was a thing of beauty! And he came off the bench vs Chelsea and rattled the woodwork.

Both will get plenty of gametime in cups and the odd cameo here and there. It's good to know they're there if we do have a big injury crisis and need to rest a player ahead of the Champions League semi final vs Real Madrid.

And Bradley is one of Chelsea's youth.
Now here's the thing - Chelsea are showing yet again that they have a strong academy and some of the kids on show this week have very high potential.
But it's Chelsea DNA to spunk tens of millions on big names and never give the academy kids a chance.
Now here's Poch that built his rep on giving kids a go.
Which way is this gonna go? Follow dumping Mount with selling Gallagher and farm out the other prospects, or put some faith in youth?

            Liverpool prospect*

I think Chelsea just try to make money with their academy. They've just bought a Newcastle prospect, born and raised in the area. Quite sad as I think he would have been better off up here, but it is what it is.

      Trent - Porro - Patterson
      Son - Rashford - Saka (C) - Kluivert
      Kane - Darwin - Jackson
      (Martinez - Chilwell - Pau - Nakamba)

      Everton/Villa rotation
      Saka/Kane captaincy rotation.

        No City… why?

Too much spent on keepers and two forwards who aren’t even nailed.

I like the midfield but wouldn’t want to start Kluivert every week given the fixtures

        1. adstomko
          • 7 Years

City rotate too much. I wouldn't be captaining Haaland until GW6, because Kane (if he stays) and Saka are great options until then.

I'd just have Pickford as a GK, but Everton are unpredictable, and Villa & Everton rotate nicely.

Kluivert can be a sub sometimes, Bournemouth should score a lot fo goals this season, given how they'll play.

City play 2 promoted teams and Fulham and NFO at home in the first 6 GWs. Why on earth wouldn’t you captain him then?

I agree regarding Bmouth but would be concerned by the lack of alternative options around his price if he fails to hit the ground running

      This looks like a good attack/frontline :

      Kulusevski - Saka - Martinelli - Eze - Grealish
Haaland - Joao Pedro - Alvarez

One of them being a sub (evidently)
      Thoughts?

      1. Tomerick
        • 9 Years
        9 months, 8 days ago

I think we need to see the full team to be able to give a verdict but based on this I would hope it’s a great back line.

Kulusevski was not at all convincing last season to the point where I’m not even sure of his price because I have not once considered him. Martinelli’s minutes could be at risk but they said that last season too. Eze could be a great differential. Grealish isn’t that great a fantasy asset any more. Alvarez is a decent punt but I’d be worried about Pedro’s minutes. I know you say you’d bench him but I think there would be times where you’d need him to play.

4-5-1 is better and my mind won't be changed on that.

More midfield options to spend your FT on, attack fixtures, attack bandwagons etc.

        1. Andy_Social
          • 11 Years

What I've been discovering is that the 3-5-2 is far from the no-brainer people are making it out to be. These other formations are more than viable.

Currently, my 3-4-3 has Joao Pedro needing to start some games - I'm not confident enough to rely on that. My 4-3-3 has 11 nailed-on starters, but starting the season with 4 defenders is not really what I want. Plenty tinkering to do yet.

      3. Hairy Potter
        • 9 Years

Think I'm edging to 3-4-3, but with a 4th defender who come in and to replace any of the initial starting 11 depending on the fixture. I still feel some way off my final draft though.

Any chance Bradley gets added to the game pre-GW1?
I believe squad players only get added once they've been included in a matchday squad/appear on the bench right?

So based on this, I suspect we'll only get the option to draft him in fro GW2 onwards.

Based on what I've seen in previous seasons, you'll now get:

          1. New signings continually priced up over the next three weeks (and beyond, till the end of August).
          2. A cluster of back-ups/academy products added after the final pre-season friendlies if/when it becomes apparent that they're going to play any part in the first-team set-up. Bradley could fall into this category.

Then, as you say Brimble, anyone else they've overlooked will be added if and when they appear in a PL matchday squad.

The database table I use of players from the FPL bootstrap file had 700+ players last season and it only imported 520~ a couple of days ago, so definitely a decent number of potential players to come into the game

I know you can customise the table to show players of a certain position but I want to have all players in my table but also be able to see their positions, I can see a 'position' column in the projections table so hopefully I've missed something? Thanks
