Robert Huth is a doubt for Stoke’s season opener with Reading after being hospitalised with a mystery virus prior to last night’s 1-1 draw at Torquay. Phil Jones is sent home from United’s training camp with illness, Santi Cazorla moves a step closer to becoming an Arsenal player after passing a medical, while Chelsea’s bid for a new right-back leads to a bid for Marseille’s Cesar Azpilicueta:

Torquay 1 Stoke 1
Tony Pulis handed triallist Sebastian Boenisch a start at left-back for last night’s trip to Torquay. Marc Wilson moved over to the other side of defence, while Ryan Shotton started on the right flank for the Potters and Thomas Sorensen got the nod ahead of Asmir Begovic between the sticks – again, this confirms the doubt surrounding the Stoke goalkeeper situation. Shotton’s throw-ins and goal threat caused problems for the hosts in the first 45 and he also played a part in his side’s goal after providing the pass which resulted in a Matthew Etherington effort being deflected into his own net by Torquay’s Aaron Downes. With fitness his main priority, Pulis made 10 changes in the second-half, though the main point of note last night was the omission of Robert Huth. The Stoke boss revealed post-match that the German has been hospitalised with a virus and is a real worry ahead of their opener at Reading in11 days’ time:

It’s a major concern so close to the start of the new season because Huthy is such an important figure for us. It takes a lot to knock Huthy back, but he was clearly not well, so we have sent him to hospital and will hopefully have the results of the tests on him tomorrow. We’re just hoping he will be okay and it’s not too serious.

Stoke Starting XI: Sorensen (Nash 67); Wilson, Shawcross (c) (Wilkinson 67), Upson (Higginbotham 67), Boenisch (Tonge 67); Shotton (Sidibe 67), Palacios (Arismendi 67), Whelan (Whitehead 55), Etherington (Ness 55); Walters (Jerome 46), Crouch (Jones 46).

In Other News…
Just as Man United’s defensive problems looked like lessening with the recent return of Nemanja Vidic, the club have now sent home Phil Jones from their pre-season tour of Scandinavia due to illness ahead of their games against Barcelona and Hannover. Only last week Sir Alex Ferguson indicated that, with Rafael still on Olympic duty with Brazil, Jones was likely to start the upcoming campaign at right-back – the former Blackburn man’s omission against Valarenga on Sunday saw Antonio Valencia shifted into the back-four, allowing Nani a role on the right and Ashley Young to start on the left. From a Fantasy perspective, Jones’ possible absence will clearly have a significant knock-on effect due to his side’s current lack of options, with Valencia’s owners particularly concerned over a possible defensive role going into their season opener at Everton on Monday August 20.

The BBC report that Santi Cazorla has moved a step closer to joining Arsenal. The Spaniard is said to have passed a medical and has joined up with the Gunners’ training camp in Germany ahead of a transfer from Spanish outfit Malaga. With the future of Robin Van Persie still undecided, the Fantasy potential of new boys Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud still hangs in the balance right now but Cazorla’s arrival – which could even be confirmed by the club as early as today – is surely set to afford Fantasy managers a tempting alternative amongst Arsene Wenger’s midfield for the season ahead. Van Persie’s possible departure would certainly boost Cazorla’s appeal further – his corners and, in particular, direct free-kicks are a strong factor when assessing the Gunners attacking assets. We’ll have more on him in a Scout Report soon after confirmation of the deal.

Marseille president Vincent Labrune has admitted Chelsea have tabled a ”very serious” bid for Cesar Azpilicueta as the Blues look to bolster their troublesome right-back area. With Jose Bosingwa leaving the club this summer, Roberto Di Matteo is clearly not convinced with Branislav Ivanovic or Paulo Ferreira in the role – while Ivanovic seemed in the driving seat and has been earmarked by many Fantasy managers ahead of the double Gameweek 1, Azpilicueta’s potential arrival may cause them to think again. Ferreira may well be no more than a bit-part player but Di Matteo’s move has made it clear than there are no longer guarantees with Ivanovic and, while the Serbian’s versatility at full-back and in the centre may appeal more than David Luiz or Gary Cahill in terms of overall game time, it could well be that Ashley Cole looks the safest of the Blues’ 6.5 priced players in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) now, with John Terry the most secure of all at 7.0.

The reports linking Dan Agger to a potential move to Man City continue to flow. Roberto Mancini is said to be admirer of the combative Dane but, according to the latest, Liverpool are holding out for a fee in the region of £20 million in order to fund a replacement and further deals for Brendan Rodgers. For Fantasy managers, this potential move would pose a major problem. Should Agger be added to Mancini’s squad, there would have to be question marks over Joleon Lescott’s starting role – unless of course, we see Mancini adopt the 3-5-2 system long term: that seems unlikely. In truth, should Agger arrive in Manchester, we’d be facing the prospect of just Joe Hart and Vincent Kompany offering assured starts in the City defensive unit – both players who demand the highest fees in their respective positions. Any move could, however, unlock a new options in that Swansea’s Ashley Williams and Tottenham’s Steven Caulker are likely to be high on Rodgers’ list as replacements at Anfield.

So RVP is staying at Arsenal afterall.

He was never going to leave, it was all just a ploy to get the transfer money for a few big signings.

How many times did we see RVP score & run over to AW & hug him??

            i didn't think of that,
however pienar last season was pretty good at points to minutes ratio (i know this naismith theory would effect him negatively) but 4 goals, 7 assists, 6 clean sheets and 12 BPS! in only 1254 minutes at 6.5mil looks pretty darn tasty

(reposted from yesterday - just to see...)

To Mark and the FFS team -

In the interests of FF conversation I’d love to see a list of a members own comments on this page: http://www.fantasyfootballscou.....rofile.php

Being able to ‘like posts’ or ‘favourite’ would be great too – the site is really popular, sometimes to its detriment, so being able to drill into past comments would be invaluable.

I’d love to be able to flag some of my posts + those made by other members. I think it’d bring more depth to the system and if implemented correctly could reduce ‘RMT’ and ‘lost on last page’ duplications that dilute the conversation (I’m waiting for this page to tick over before posting - irony noted on two counts).

      - Obertan will not get many minutes could do with upgrading him as you already have Guthrie
      - I would rather have Rangel/Williams at 5.0m than Vorm at 5.5m
      - Id downgrade Pearce to a 4.0m Reading defender to save 0.5m
      - Assuming that is Pappis Cisse then the rest of the team looks OK, although I think there is better value at 6.5m than BAE, but thats your personal preference

You have to admit though that they're not that strong on the wing. Milner and Silva aren't wingers, and that only leaves Johnson and Nasri. But I do agree that Johnson should play more, rather than looking at Sinclair.

Yeah, I'm not begrudging Sinclair the move by any means, just commenting that a fair few young english lads have moved there now and not really managed top set the world on fire.

I just can't see him getting anywhere near the gametime he does at Swansea, going the same way as Milner and Johnson, who really should be playing more regularly at their age.

All to the detriment of the England team as some of our best young players regress.

Can't stand that rule, it makes no sense wahtsoever unless one intends a slient "h" e.g. "honourable". The only dumber rule is the wannabe-Latinist prohibition of the split infinitive.

I think that obeying an arbitrary and artificial rule, designed only to impose Latin rules on a Germanic language, would be entirely against the spirit of our free and organic idiom.

Wasn't necessarily disagreeing, I was choosing to be self-indulgent and split an infinitive whilst stating that others should not split infinitives - grammar jokes are rarely funny, especially when they're too obtuse and require explanation 🙂

I read Chelsea are after another forward. Forget his name, but it might make life easier with any temptation to risk starting with Torres. It'll make him more of a doubt and so not worth bothering with.

I currently have Tevez Aguero Petric.

The thinking is start with both City forwards, but then drop one of them for GW4, if one of them looks less value.

Cazorla sounds like an exciting FPL prospect!. Assuming he signs, I am thinking a valuation of 9m or less would make him a very tempting proposiion. With midfield options at the 'arris looking more limited than the other big guns surely he will be nailed on? Any comments Gooners fans?

He'll be less than 9.0 surely.

The main issue is whether Wenger opts for a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1.

If the former then I'd expect Cazorla to partner Arteta in the middle, with Song just behind. He'd have a license to go forward but would not be as advanced as he would in the 4-2-3-1, where I'd expect him to play in the centre of the attacking three (behind either RVP or Giroud). Arteta would play alongside Song in the more defensive midfield two.

IF Cazorla can cement his place in a 4-2-3-1 then he's very much worth the likely 8.0-8.5 price tag. If not then perhaps you should overlook him. No doubting his creativity though.

Problem is, it's very hard to distinguish between a 4-2-3-1 and a 4-3-3. Depends how fluid Wenger makes the formation.

    Terry, Saylor, Cuellar, Stevens, Clyne
    Bale, Cazorla(8m) Taarabt, Allen(liverpool), Kacaniklic

I'm liking that team a lot. Enda Stevens could be a great pick for Villa, piked up a few assists in pre-season and if Warnock goes he will be their only LB option (unless PL signs Cresswell, which is on the rumour mill). Watching Carzola too, 8m would make him very tempting. Not sure about Papiss at 9.5m though, would be tempted to go with Tevez and double up on City at that price.

So, I've decided on going on a going defender heavy and 2 captains to start off with since their points are a lot easier to predict. I'll pick up all the midfield bargains on my wildcard that I'll most likely play after gw4!

    de Gea,Federici
    Terry,Cole A,Rangel,Dawson,Gorkss
    Mata,Britton,Noble,Bale,Maloney
    Pogrebnyak,Aguero,Rooney

Any thoughts? Not sure if Britton at 4.5 is right, any other ideas?

I really love your team, but i don't have faith in CSs in the premier league anymore though. And Noble Maloney and Britton probably won't provide many attacking points, leaving your strikers as the main point scorers. I have:

          Green | Jussi
          Terry Hangeland Cuellar Rangel Gunter
          Mata Dempsey Pienaar McClean Noble
          Rooney Aguero Pog

There has to be one weak point in a team, and i chose the keepers. But i can't argue with your rank, so i'll keep quiet 😀

A few ifs in there but IF they come through then you're sitting pretty. I really hope that Dawson takes that Spurs spot. I'm still not fully sure with De Gea's starting spot to be honest but you'd think Fergie would play him for the opening games and gage from there.

      Love the defence otherwise though.

I'll be having Mata and Bale or Sigurdsson too. You happy with that much money in midfield? No Torres?

I have something similar, been banging on about spending more in defence as the price differences between rubbish and good defenders is minimal, but people don't listen. I like this, except Britton. Also not sold completely on Mata - he is their best player but reminds me of Silva in that he won't get the biggest GW scores. Can't see you keeping him for long, as someone good will hit form (unless your plan is to get rid after the DGW).

    Song

    Walcott Cazorla Podolski

    RVP

    Giroud

Subs: Santos, Mertesacker, Arteta, Ramsey, Gerv, Rosicky, Ox, Diaby, Chamakh

Plus young Jack if he ever comes back

I am starting to think that is a pretty decent squad, well, apart from Chamakh...

Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger said: "Santi Cazorla is a great signing for us. He is a player with good experience at both club and international level, who will add significant quality to our squad.

"He is a versatile, attacking midfield player who can play comfortably on either side of the pitch or centrally. He has good pace, is technically gifted and will be a huge asset to Arsenal Football Club.

No chance - Cazorla is not able to play as part of a 2 man midfield - he is more attacking than that.

Arteta will be with Song surely, with Cazorla just in front, and just the one from RVP/Giroud.

We may disagree with the actual line up, but the overall point is, Arsenal do have a good squad this season.

Maybe until Sagna gets back, but hopefully not, I think he is one for the future.
