Robert Huth is a doubt for Stoke’s season opener with Reading after being hospitalised with a mystery virus prior to last night’s 1-1 draw at Torquay. Phil Jones is sent home from United’s training camp with illness, Santi Cazorla moves a step closer to becoming an Arsenal player after passing a medical, while Chelsea’s bid for a new right-back leads to a bid for Marseille’s Cesar Azpilicueta:

Torquay 1 Stoke 1
Tony Pulis handed triallist Sebastian Boenisch a start at left-back for last night’s trip to Torquay. Marc Wilson moved over to the other side of defence, while Ryan Shotton started on the right flank for the Potters and Thomas Sorensen got the nod ahead of Asmir Begovic between the sticks – again, this confirms the doubt surrounding the Stoke goalkeeper situation. Shotton’s throw-ins and goal threat caused problems for the hosts in the first 45 and he also played a part in his side’s goal after providing the pass which resulted in a Matthew Etherington effort being deflected into his own net by Torquay’s Aaron Downes. With fitness his main priority, Pulis made 10 changes in the second-half, though the main point of note last night was the omission of Robert Huth. The Stoke boss revealed post-match that the German has been hospitalised with a virus and is a real worry ahead of their opener at Reading in11 days’ time:

It’s a major concern so close to the start of the new season because Huthy is such an important figure for us. It takes a lot to knock Huthy back, but he was clearly not well, so we have sent him to hospital and will hopefully have the results of the tests on him tomorrow. We’re just hoping he will be okay and it’s not too serious.

Stoke Starting XI: Sorensen (Nash 67); Wilson, Shawcross (c) (Wilkinson 67), Upson (Higginbotham 67), Boenisch (Tonge 67); Shotton (Sidibe 67), Palacios (Arismendi 67), Whelan (Whitehead 55), Etherington (Ness 55); Walters (Jerome 46), Crouch (Jones 46).

In Other News…
Just as Man United’s defensive problems looked like lessening with the recent return of Nemanja Vidic, the club have now sent home Phil Jones from their pre-season tour of Scandinavia due to illness ahead of their games against Barcelona and Hannover. Only last week Sir Alex Ferguson indicated that, with Rafael still on Olympic duty with Brazil, Jones was likely to start the upcoming campaign at right-back – the former Blackburn man’s omission against Valarenga on Sunday saw Antonio Valencia shifted into the back-four, allowing Nani a role on the right and Ashley Young to start on the left. From a Fantasy perspective, Jones’ possible absence will clearly have a significant knock-on effect due to his side’s current lack of options, with Valencia’s owners particularly concerned over a possible defensive role going into their season opener at Everton on Monday August 20.

The BBC report that Santi Cazorla has moved a step closer to joining Arsenal. The Spaniard is said to have passed a medical and has joined up with the Gunners’ training camp in Germany ahead of a transfer from Spanish outfit Malaga. With the future of Robin Van Persie still undecided, the Fantasy potential of new boys Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud still hangs in the balance right now but Cazorla’s arrival – which could even be confirmed by the club as early as today – is surely set to afford Fantasy managers a tempting alternative amongst Arsene Wenger’s midfield for the season ahead. Van Persie’s possible departure would certainly boost Cazorla’s appeal further – his corners and, in particular, direct free-kicks are a strong factor when assessing the Gunners attacking assets. We’ll have more on him in a Scout Report soon after confirmation of the deal.

Marseille president Vincent Labrune has admitted Chelsea have tabled a ”very serious” bid for Cesar Azpilicueta as the Blues look to bolster their troublesome right-back area. With Jose Bosingwa leaving the club this summer, Roberto Di Matteo is clearly not convinced with Branislav Ivanovic or Paulo Ferreira in the role – while Ivanovic seemed in the driving seat and has been earmarked by many Fantasy managers ahead of the double Gameweek 1, Azpilicueta’s potential arrival may cause them to think again. Ferreira may well be no more than a bit-part player but Di Matteo’s move has made it clear than there are no longer guarantees with Ivanovic and, while the Serbian’s versatility at full-back and in the centre may appeal more than David Luiz or Gary Cahill in terms of overall game time, it could well be that Ashley Cole looks the safest of the Blues’ 6.5 priced players in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) now, with John Terry the most secure of all at 7.0.

The reports linking Dan Agger to a potential move to Man City continue to flow. Roberto Mancini is said to be admirer of the combative Dane but, according to the latest, Liverpool are holding out for a fee in the region of £20 million in order to fund a replacement and further deals for Brendan Rodgers. For Fantasy managers, this potential move would pose a major problem. Should Agger be added to Mancini’s squad, there would have to be question marks over Joleon Lescott’s starting role – unless of course, we see Mancini adopt the 3-5-2 system long term: that seems unlikely. In truth, should Agger arrive in Manchester, we’d be facing the prospect of just Joe Hart and Vincent Kompany offering assured starts in the City defensive unit – both players who demand the highest fees in their respective positions. Any move could, however, unlock a new options in that Swansea’s Ashley Williams and Tottenham’s Steven Caulker are likely to be high on Rodgers’ list as replacements at Anfield.

you need to invest big in backline for a 433 waste of funds if you ask me ........You can get 25M (budget)defenders which are nailed on and rotate decently to play a 433.......

3-5-2 OR 3-4-3 are probably the only two formations that i normally look at, rarely play 4 at the back.

Will most likely have 2/3 that play every week, then a rotating pair. Cheaper to go big at the back.

Please RMT – I posted this yesterday PM, would be interested to the get the opinion of the AM crowd:

    De Gea – Federici
    Ivanovic – Hughes – Demel – Santon – Cuellar
    Lampard – Bale – Yaya – Ireland – Noble
    Aguero – Tevez – Petric

£1.5 in the bank. Aguero -> Rooney GW2.
£1m then for tinkering going forward.

    Thanks

      Couple of Chelsea - tick
      City attack - triple tick

First question, is Hughes nailed on? If so I'll swap my Hangeland for him.
Second, is Santon? Third, is Cuellar?

      Little risky.

Ireland? Really? You think he'll shine under Lambert?

Like your money management though, nicely spread around. Attack plan is great.

Hughes looks nailed on for now, based on friendlies, but yes, I acknowledge it is a risk.

Santon, yeah, I reckon he will be Newcastle's LB.

Cuellar, should be, again, hard to be sure, so yes a touch risky.

Ireland is my big gamble. He rotates very nicely with Noble, and if he does get regular gametime under Lambert he could rekindle himself as a nice attacking midfielder.

Bookmark, Copy it, rip it to shreds...whatever. Here is the masterpiece that I have created 😉

    Schwarzer (Begovic)

    Cole Hangeland Rangel (Cuellar, Demel)

    Mata Taraabt Yaya Michu (Maloney)

    RVP Petric Aguero

My unique gk combo is the best value out there and rotate amazingly (aware with bego risk.

1 big hitter in defence will likely turn into man c for gwk 3. Then great value in hangeland, rangel has awesome fixtures and cuellar at 4.5 is a no-brainer.

Can't go wrong with Mata for the dgw, he will become bale or siggy after it. Michu will be one of the value picks of the season.

RVP is the best fantasy prospect in the game and as long as hes a gunner come gw1 he will be in my team. Petric will be almost must have this year and will bag 15+ goals.

I bet 50% of your predictions will be bottom up come GW1.
Why I think so, petric has never scored 15 goals in a league season even at a defensively inferior Bundesleague, RVP price makes him poor value- how often do players win golden boot 2years in a row and with more selfish talent around he is unlikely to score as much. Mata is unlikely to play both games. I have Michu in my team but there is no way in telling how good he can be. Double Fulham defensive cover is just moronic especially when there are 4.5 mil options available in their team.
Your midfield is dependent on too many variables- yaya(dependent on Silva playing) Mata( how many minutes), Taarabt( bad fixtures besides the first one), Maloney could be ok.

      Still WC for you GW3

So Carzola seems very good. He made it in to Zonal Markings European Team of the Year alongside the likes of Messi and Ronaldo.

    http://www.zonalmarking.net/2012/05/30/zms-european-team-of-the-year-201112/

"Possibly the signing of the season, despite the significant transfer fee. Cazorla swapped Villarreal for Malaga – and as Villarreal went from 4th to 18th, Malaga went from 11th to 4th. He’s not the only reason, of course, as Malaga have shelled out other star names, but his consistency over the course of the season has been highly commendable. He’s not particularly fast and doesn’t score many goals from open play, but his positioning and movement marks him out as one of the most intelligent players around – he’s selfless and precise with his passing, and also one of the best free-kick takers in Europe."

You've got to think that even if by himself he's not such a wonderful fantasy prospect (doesn't score much etc. ) he should improve Arsenal as a team and the prospects of the rest of their players.

Thats not what I said though. Scholes isn't a good fantasy prospect either. But he makes his team better. Its the same with Carzola; while I wontbe considering him specifically I think Arsenal just became a much better team and the potential attacking returns of some of their other players have increased, so they're back on the table.

    Schwarzer
    Baines / Vidic / Vermaelen
    Bale / Sessegnon / Ramires / Ireland
    Torres / Tevez / Petric

    Ruddy / Guthrie / Fonte / Gunter

    - 2.0m in the kitty for the standard Torres to Rooney transfer.
    - Ramires will eventually become Pienaar/Michu/other in-form mid priced midfielder.
    - I will be playing Schwarzer every week bar super tough fixtures like GW2 & 6 where Ruddy had OK fixtures to fill in for him.
    - I have Rooney, Bale & maybe Tevez as captaincy options which I am happy enough with.

sess will do brilliant this year i think

wouldn't have 3 7M defenders myself but if you think that's way to start season you should be fin

i see great potential in vidic in baines , can't say same for vermalen due his hard oppening fixures

      mf+atack looks great

Yeah I agree re Arsenals fixtures but with Vermaelens attacking potential I view him as fixture proof.

Also agree re Sess, alot put off him at 8.0 but he could be great this year.

I like that team but would not have spent so much on defence you could change Vermaelen unless you believe Arsenal will pick up points in their early run, the attacking potential is simply not enough if you compare for example Kompany defensive potential or other City players. Also Baines is one to downgrade if Everton start slow or just start without him and get someone else for now.

        Thanks.

I want to leave the 3 heavy hitting defenders in for a decent while, I feel Vermaelens points per game are very good despite Arsenal not being as stong at the back as say Man City.

I feel Everton will start well this year and Baines is a fantasy favourite of mine and will be in my team the majority of the season, but I understand your points.

Sagna is set to miss the first three weeks of the season. Knowing Arsenal's injury record I'd expect him to miss the first two months.

Keep your eye on Jenkinson at 4.5. He offers a much cheaper alternative into the Arsenal defence. People may question whether his nailed on to start but I can safely say that Wenger will play him. Jenkinson was always number 2 behind Sagna last season, and the likes of Coquelin/Kos/Djourou only played there when Jenkinson was injured himself - he much prefers playing players in their natural position before making somebody else deputise.

Obviously Arsenal's early schedule is average at best. But if you are thinking of an Arsenal DF, bear Jenkinson in mind.

    Hart / Henderson

    ACole Hange Rangel Cueller Demel

    Lamps Hazard Kagawa Maloney Noble

    Aguero Tevez Petric

.5 in the bank for Lamps > Bale GW2 (probably).

Hmm. Well Maloney I'm not too worried about - he can come out for another mid that emerges in that price range. I did have Graham, but Petric is looking like a worthwhile punt. Hazard is worth it for the DGW and I think Kagawa will be really good for Utd.

Bedknobs, what is your current keeper combo? I was set with de Gea / Fed for a while but now I've bottled it because of the Lindegaard situation and because half of the MUN defence are crocked so I don't think it's essential to cover their defence. I'd be interested to see how cheap you were going...

I'm not keen on Shawcross (fixs), Tomkins, or Ramsey, but rest looks good. I think there are better 5m defenders around than Shawx - are you looking at him cos he rotates well with others? Wilson is a cheaper option maybe.

It is called hedging our bets, the risks of what may happen by not having Torres are bigger than the possible rewards of having someone else. Especially if you already have Aguero in your team.

If history repeats itself 95% of fantasy team owners will be cursing the devil come the completion of GW1 and we'll see the "You burnt me Torres, never again" posts for the next 5 days solid. Personally, I think not getting Torres is a risk but only because he's nailed on and playing striker in a decent teams in a DGW against a perpetual failure and a PL new-comer - it could be a blood-bath. We'll all then transfer him out, spend 4 points cleaning it up and be no further ahead than if we got Rooney from the out-set.

Having said that, I'm getting Torres for GW1 and will then spend my well calculated 2.0 on an upgrade to Rooney no matter what happens first game.

To Bubbles/Greenwindmill if your about in relatio to our
' A/An horrific accident ' on last page I report the following:

'an horrific' is completely wrong. 'An' should only be used before words beginning with 'h' where the h is silent, as in hour, heir, honour and honourable. In instances where the h is sounded - as in hotel, horrible and horrific - it should be a, not an.

That makes the non-natives (moi) grammar correct.

Cazorla = over-rated signing! Don't see him doing as well as Podolski in the PL.

Also, any comparisons with Cesc is daft.

Is it because your opinion is always destined to be opposed to what the 99% of the people say?

You know, Forca. A bell-curve reminds me of you. There are 0.5% on the top (elites) and 0.5% on the bottom (douches). Decipher, if you will.

Podolski and hazard are on my ,,flops of the season list''

I see Santi doing very well. Hopefully Podolski too, but he has tended the struggle when he is playing away from his hometown club
