Robert Huth is a doubt for Stoke’s season opener with Reading after being hospitalised with a mystery virus prior to last night’s 1-1 draw at Torquay. Phil Jones is sent home from United’s training camp with illness, Santi Cazorla moves a step closer to becoming an Arsenal player after passing a medical, while Chelsea’s bid for a new right-back leads to a bid for Marseille’s Cesar Azpilicueta:

Torquay 1 Stoke 1
Tony Pulis handed triallist Sebastian Boenisch a start at left-back for last night’s trip to Torquay. Marc Wilson moved over to the other side of defence, while Ryan Shotton started on the right flank for the Potters and Thomas Sorensen got the nod ahead of Asmir Begovic between the sticks – again, this confirms the doubt surrounding the Stoke goalkeeper situation. Shotton’s throw-ins and goal threat caused problems for the hosts in the first 45 and he also played a part in his side’s goal after providing the pass which resulted in a Matthew Etherington effort being deflected into his own net by Torquay’s Aaron Downes. With fitness his main priority, Pulis made 10 changes in the second-half, though the main point of note last night was the omission of Robert Huth. The Stoke boss revealed post-match that the German has been hospitalised with a virus and is a real worry ahead of their opener at Reading in11 days’ time:

It’s a major concern so close to the start of the new season because Huthy is such an important figure for us. It takes a lot to knock Huthy back, but he was clearly not well, so we have sent him to hospital and will hopefully have the results of the tests on him tomorrow. We’re just hoping he will be okay and it’s not too serious.

Stoke Starting XI: Sorensen (Nash 67); Wilson, Shawcross (c) (Wilkinson 67), Upson (Higginbotham 67), Boenisch (Tonge 67); Shotton (Sidibe 67), Palacios (Arismendi 67), Whelan (Whitehead 55), Etherington (Ness 55); Walters (Jerome 46), Crouch (Jones 46).

In Other News…
Just as Man United’s defensive problems looked like lessening with the recent return of Nemanja Vidic, the club have now sent home Phil Jones from their pre-season tour of Scandinavia due to illness ahead of their games against Barcelona and Hannover. Only last week Sir Alex Ferguson indicated that, with Rafael still on Olympic duty with Brazil, Jones was likely to start the upcoming campaign at right-back – the former Blackburn man’s omission against Valarenga on Sunday saw Antonio Valencia shifted into the back-four, allowing Nani a role on the right and Ashley Young to start on the left. From a Fantasy perspective, Jones’ possible absence will clearly have a significant knock-on effect due to his side’s current lack of options, with Valencia’s owners particularly concerned over a possible defensive role going into their season opener at Everton on Monday August 20.

The BBC report that Santi Cazorla has moved a step closer to joining Arsenal. The Spaniard is said to have passed a medical and has joined up with the Gunners’ training camp in Germany ahead of a transfer from Spanish outfit Malaga. With the future of Robin Van Persie still undecided, the Fantasy potential of new boys Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud still hangs in the balance right now but Cazorla’s arrival – which could even be confirmed by the club as early as today – is surely set to afford Fantasy managers a tempting alternative amongst Arsene Wenger’s midfield for the season ahead. Van Persie’s possible departure would certainly boost Cazorla’s appeal further – his corners and, in particular, direct free-kicks are a strong factor when assessing the Gunners attacking assets. We’ll have more on him in a Scout Report soon after confirmation of the deal.

Marseille president Vincent Labrune has admitted Chelsea have tabled a ”very serious” bid for Cesar Azpilicueta as the Blues look to bolster their troublesome right-back area. With Jose Bosingwa leaving the club this summer, Roberto Di Matteo is clearly not convinced with Branislav Ivanovic or Paulo Ferreira in the role – while Ivanovic seemed in the driving seat and has been earmarked by many Fantasy managers ahead of the double Gameweek 1, Azpilicueta’s potential arrival may cause them to think again. Ferreira may well be no more than a bit-part player but Di Matteo’s move has made it clear than there are no longer guarantees with Ivanovic and, while the Serbian’s versatility at full-back and in the centre may appeal more than David Luiz or Gary Cahill in terms of overall game time, it could well be that Ashley Cole looks the safest of the Blues’ 6.5 priced players in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) now, with John Terry the most secure of all at 7.0.

The reports linking Dan Agger to a potential move to Man City continue to flow. Roberto Mancini is said to be admirer of the combative Dane but, according to the latest, Liverpool are holding out for a fee in the region of £20 million in order to fund a replacement and further deals for Brendan Rodgers. For Fantasy managers, this potential move would pose a major problem. Should Agger be added to Mancini’s squad, there would have to be question marks over Joleon Lescott’s starting role – unless of course, we see Mancini adopt the 3-5-2 system long term: that seems unlikely. In truth, should Agger arrive in Manchester, we’d be facing the prospect of just Joe Hart and Vincent Kompany offering assured starts in the City defensive unit – both players who demand the highest fees in their respective positions. Any move could, however, unlock a new options in that Swansea’s Ashley Williams and Tottenham’s Steven Caulker are likely to be high on Rodgers’ list as replacements at Anfield.

        False!!

The defense isnt that great, but Santos is a decent player.

        All the midfielders are good.

Bendtner is a very decent player, it is his ego that puts people off him, but still a decent player.

Bendtner is not 'a very decent player'. He's largely wasteful and lazy. Defo not good enough to play for a top 6 or even top 10 club

Its a punt. And you'd have to be captaining torres for it. If not dont bother with him at all. Torress was a right pain in the ass last year but then he goes and shows a bit of form in cl and euros. Im giving him a week. Even a hattrick wont keep him in my team for gw2

See what happens in the Community Shield next Sunday, that should answer some questions on Chelsea and City players. If Torres gets the full 90 mins and looks decent I will pick him. If Tevez plays most of it I might also consider him instead of Aguero.

As well as a bad keeper, you have to play 3/6 from the other players. If you can get rotating defenders (assuming you can only get 1/3 with a good fixture) that leaves playing the 6m striker every game and then a rotating midfielder.

Actually, that's not too bad... The only problem with two lots of rotation is that it's bound to go tits up; the start of the season throws up a lot of surprises and this will ruin any rotation plans.

keeper isnt going anywhere, defence might be big trouble with lescott playing every week, and 5.0,4.5 swapping around with 2 4.0m defenders each week according to the fixturess.. Its not comfortable though way the team has lined up

If grahem is 6 mil striker id have no worries at all playing every week for ages. 130 something points last year! For 6 mill! Plus allows aguero and rooney! Most had only one of them last year! Mid will be on fire! Noble maloney as ur 5 that leaves you with great mid with that money. Stick hang as ur 5 def and lescot as ur biggy. Jesus man this team will rock. Just decide what keeper options ur goin to do. Solo 5 mil isnt great. .5 more gets u a rota or a single 5.5. Easy to downgrade one of mids. Plenty of fantastic 9 mil options!

Show us a draft. Format is good

                9/9.5/9.5/4.5/5

                roooney/aguero/graham

this formation has serious drawbacks at the back thoughhh, you will be thinking of other 2 defenders with lescott every week

Wouldnt call it serious drawbacks . . .
Your obviously playing a 343 firmation. Ponts come from attack. All you really need from gk fir example is someone who gets save. The cleanie is a bonus. Look at ladt year. All those goals conceeded in last minute? Bad stratagy to rely on def for scores.

So defenders. Guessing ur thinking lescot, hangeland, 4.5 forte macartney or whoever you want. Cleanies and def attack points are not predictable unless you spend a lot. Do you want to sacrafice ur mid to get another 6 or 7mil defender in there? Whose gonna score more? You know ur answer.

2 4mil def and a 4.5 mil mid are usually my bench fodder. I dont do rota systems. Feckall points to be got in def anyway and with rota you allways seem to get it wrong. The amount of times i watched cleanies sitting on bench last year! Bottem price budget for 2 def and one mid and then field the best 12 you can with 87.5 mill

Gk not feasable. There is no 4 mill keeper and relying on the 5 mill? No.

Defence is cheap but thats actually ok cos your forward line and mid should be awesome. Turn one of those 9.5 into a 9 and get a gk rota or a single 5.5 gk. punt on sczenzy? 😀

Yeah idea behind heavy forward line is I can downgrade mata/hazard in gw1 and GW2 and get cash available depending who starts well in respective teams.......Can easily release 1m from downgrading without hurting much of forward line....

      How do.

Final draft. Barring any injuries or mad shit happening I plan to start something like this:

      Green
      Clichy, Hangeland, Pearce
      Bale, Mata, McClean, Pienaar
      Torres, Aguero, Graham

      Bench: Davis, Rangel, McCartney, Noble

The only possible change I'm considering is going with Roonpig instead of Torres.

      Opinions?

Well I don't care at least I know Del Boske is on my side. Remember in the WC when everybody were expecting Fabs to come from the bench, Cazorla was the sub. He must think him as that kind of a player.

He isn't that injury prone too and has winner mentality, not like Cesc. Fabregas is the reason that Barca failed this year 😉

Seeing that most of the RMTs seem to be based on a short term strategy (Torres to Rooney within one week etc) What do everyone predict for the first GW of the season?

This is my predictions based on nothing what so ever really...

Arsenal 2- 0 Sunderland The gooners without their main stars have been steadily finding the net in preseason and the black cats have been woeful and do not have a striker (yet) and been tinkering various formations so seems MON is not decided how he wants to do things and will be a slow start for them.

Fulham 2-1 Norwich Fulham are very steady at home even without Dempsey who will move to Liverpool after Agger goes to City but clean sheet will be stopped by a late Pilkington goal

QPR 1 - 1 Swansea A tough fought game with Swansea showing a lot of improvement away from home but seem a little more frail at the back without Caulker. QPR could easily have won the game by 3 or 4 but failed to find the net due to the impressive Vorm

    Reading 0 - 0 Stoke A boring contest

West Brom 0 - 2 Liverpool Rogers starts the campaign well with goals for new boy Dempsey and Gerrard

West Ham 2- 0 Villa Not a good start for Lambert although the team seem to be moving the ball about well have been hard done with defensive errors leading to easy goals for the hammers

Newcastle 0 - 0 Spurs It seems Newcastle are very tough to break down at home but promising signs for AVB as his team set out a very attack minded formation and had majority of the chances. Cisse and Ba seem slow off the blocks.

Wigan 1 - 3 Chelsea Wigan get an early goal but Chelsea's quality in front of goal paid off as they take over the game with Mata and Hazard running the show

Man City 3 - 0 Southampton A battering as City continue their winning form the ended last season with. Mancini's new tactics seem to kick in instantly with the wide wingbacks breaking down the flanks and intricate passing game in the middle. Could have been 5

Everton 1 - 1 Man United A notoriously tough ground for United who can only manage a draw. Jelavic scores for the Toffees. The team is almost the same as last season and Kagawa comes off the bench but is involved in the equaliser.

Chelsea 2 - 0 Reading Its business as usual for RDMs men who shuffled his team around a lot and included starts for some of the new boys and Chelsea are top of the table

Oh yeah no doubt but this list is mostly with season keepers I plan on trying to play Al Habsi all season. Zabs will play at least the first two. No way richards gets in on any look of the 3-5-2, Ruiz seems more stable than Petric, if dempsey gets in shape and stays or goes Ruiz will be a constant. Nani is a season keeper and looks more likely to be a starter especially with the Valencia uncertainty. Rafael can easily be bench Gw1 as all my defenders rotate, or have been deemed fixture proof (by me of course) for at least the first five GWs. Plan B is RVP instead of Kun...or Rafael to Chels defender.

Then you got walcott, Gervinho and Diaby

And we all have 0 Arsenal cover (except a few with Verm/Koscielny).

It would be back to the drawing board but their fixtures are meh to start so my plan is to hold back and see what kind of play time the likes of Podolski get and make a decision from there.

I don't think we have the best team, City and United are still well ahead in my opinion.
I do however, think we will finish above Chelsea again, quite comfortably too.

it's potentially one of the strongest teams. For the first time in god knows how long Arsenal will be getting stronger rather than weakening their team

Bolt looked comfortable in his 200m heat, but Blake has a great chance of beating him in the final.

Saying that, he's about to run so he'll probably pull a hamstring.

    Arteta Cazorla
    Walcott RVP Podolski

SUBS: Mertesacker, Santos, Ramsey, Wilshere, Rosicky, Oxlade, Gervinho, Giroud

that's a team capable of making a title challenge this year
When wilshere returns, Cazorla might compete also for the wong places

Looks like fletcher deal is just about done. Could be a good shout for the 3rd striker spot if comes in around £6m.

He'll start pretty much every game for us and will be the focus point for mcclean/larrson deliveries. I don't see us scoring that many goals this season but would expect fletcher to comfortably get 10+.....well I'd hope so at that ridiculius price!
