In case you missed it, we’ve expanded our coverage of Fantasy games this season and have rolled out our own league in the Sky Sports game. What better way, then, to boost our know-how of this new diversion than an interview with last season’s overall winner, Michael Shipley: a long-time visitor and member of Fantasy Football Scout…

FFScout: Take us through your title winning season. What were the turning points and key transfers/decisions you made during the campaign?
MS: Since you have the opportunity to change your captain every week there are plenty of decisions to regret throughout the season! However it’s the choices towards the end of the campaign that you tend to remember and think of as crucial, even though in reality, early decisions are just as important. In the same way that Man City’s three points against Swansea in Gameweek 1 was just as important as the dramatic win against QPR on the last day, my decision to select Sergio Aguero as captain for the final week stands out.

FFScout: Who was/were your key player(s) throughout? Were there any differentials who came in and produced for you?
MS: It was obviously essential to cash in on Robin Van Persie’s form for much of the season. I drafted in Jonny Evans, Clint Dempsey and Gylfi Sigurdsson sometime around March – all performed consistently until May and also provided the necessary funds to invest in Aguero in April.

FFScout: How did your initial lineup fare? Are you a believer in clawing back early lineup mistakes?
MS: I benefited from Edin Dzeko’s early season goal blast but obviously had to remove him fairly sharpish when he fell out of favour. If you make a mistake with your initial selection or if circumstances conspire against you early in the season, then you definitely can’t ride it out for almost an entire campaign without subs to call on. However the difficulty is identifying it and not making another mistake trying to rectify it.

FFScout: Did you play any other games alongside the Sky Sports Fantasy last season? At which point did the Sky Sports game become the priority?
MS: I also entered the Mirror (YTM), Metro, Sun and Daily Mail competitions. I didn’t pay any attention to the Sun or Metro from November. After that I mainly focused on the Sky teams and helping my wife with her Daily Mail teams, although I kept an eye on YTM for the remainder of the season after staying in contention for longer than expected.

FFScout: How much of an impact did the race for the prize have on your day-to-day life?
MS: Not too much. During the run-in I was keenly refreshing the leaderboards the morning after fixtures and wondering what players rivals might have.

FFScout: How did the final day of the season unfold for you?
MS: I had used all my transfers and the captain deadline was the previous midweek (note Gameweeks now run Saturday to Friday), therefore the dye was cast, so to speak. So I could enjoy normal weekend activities such as taking the kids to the cinema and mowing the lawn. The term “enjoy” is adopted loosely for the latter, but I could enjoy the final day drama unfold knowing it had eventually been done! Even after Aguero scored and subsequently was awarded the Man of the Match, I didn’t know whether it was enough to secure top spot, since it was a strong possibility that my rivals could have captained him. So I didn’t get excited until I learned that my main rival had chosen Fernando Torres as his captain for Chelsea’s double Gameweek.

FFScout: Do you tend to favour established players or are you willing to take a risk on new arrivals to the Premier League?
MS: I am quite happy to take a calculated gamble, sometimes it works out and other times you pick Mauro Boselli!

FFScout: Without giving too much of your strategy away, do you have any tips for new Sky Sports Fantasy managers out there? Ie, with no benches to allow rotation, how should our approach differ?
MS: I honestly can’t think of anything other than the standard Fantasy football strategies that I’m sure that the average Fantasy Football Scout visitor would be aware of. Having no bench should make team selections simpler; just pick the 11 players that will score the most points!

FFScout: How do you think the rule changes concerning bonus points will alter your strategy for the forthcoming season?
MS: It is just another factor to consider when weighing up the value of a player. It will require less conventional judgments to be made on selections but I am fine with that.

The Scout League

Thanks to Michael for taking time out his pre-season to talk to us. You can join him in the hunt for the top prize of £25,000 this season’s Sky Sports Fantasy Football, while in our Fantasy Football Scout League we’ve a home cinema system worth £600 up for grabs.

Register your team here and then sign up for the “FFScout” League with the PIN Code: 8004519.

Sky Stats On the Way

If you’ve already signed up, or on the verge of doing so, you’ll hopefully interested in knowing that tomorrow we’re scheduled to release our Sky Sports stats table for members. These will take the new bonus points system and apply them to last season’s data. The tables will identify those players who earned 60+ successful passes and 4+ tackles won per match and offer an overall bonus score, plus a minutes per bonus stat. They’ll be available for all positions and fully sortable. Right now, if you’re playing the Sky Sports game, this data is unavailable elsewhere.

We’ll also be publishing a follow-up article, analysing the top performers from last term and identifying the potential benefactors of the Sky Sports Fantasy Football bonus points for the season ahead.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Probably will be able to see the team on Sat if FPL doesn't crash again 🙂 Well last time I was making my last changes with limited net was more than 90 pts in GW 1 and Drogba Malouda going crazy. Now I invest in Chelsea heavily again so I can see the same movie again 😉

Well I must say I haven't changed for more than 10 days. I have 5 playable defenders. Something like

            Jussi Federici
            Boyce Hangeland Cashely Lescott Williams
            Lamps Bale Sinclair Nollan Guthrie
            Torres Kun Pog
0.5m in the bank for Kun to Rooney swap.
            Thoughts Tosey?

I see way too much value in 5.0m defenders this year. Tones of options I might have 5 of them. I think I am very close to brake the template.

glad to see they are your three chelsea players as i am picking 2 from those 3, currently with lamps and torres

i like the midfield, similar to mine

i am going against the average (4.5-5.5m) defenders this year, i spent a bit of time looking at potential rotations last year and shawcross/hangelaand for example wouldve been a disaster as would most of them so planning to treble on citys defence still

im slightly concerned about lescott starting given the comments on silva/balotellis fitness, what are your thoughts?

Why not just go Zabaleta instead of Lescott, and eliminate one potential headache? Don't think I've seen one RMT w/ Kolo Torre in it. You know what that means don't you? Kolo will start GW1...IMHO of course. Mancini secretly hates Fantasy football...

slightly of topic, why isn't Mancini's son (or Guidetti) listed on their team sheet in transfers?

Is it ballsy, foolish or sound strategy?

Keep Torres GW 2 for NEW game and then sell him for Kun again in GW3. Meaning I won't have Kun for the liv game and probably will loose 0.1 or something on Kun, but probably Torres will rise too. One more transfer should be calculated there too.

Please share thoughts on this strategy. I see everybody are doing Torres to Rooney GW2 and playing Kun away at Liv where I don't think so he will have field day.

id either start with rooney and tevez or choose between rooney and aguero. there will be a nice fixture for one in the midst of a longer stretch of fixtures for the other, but most times you bite the bullet i think. ideally, id like to one one of them for at least 4 gws at a time. unless the rest of my squad is in perfect shape, which it never is.

I am keeping Torres until the international break, when he may become RVP or Aguero - or even Rooney! One of my three transfers, unless he's scoring for fun.

I think it has a very sound basis. The problem I see is that it will cost you another transfer. You won't be able to touch your team until after the 3rd week unless you take a point hit. I believe that you are right and that is the best strategy IF you are extremely confident in the rest of your squad with you having 3 Chelsea players I think you need o lose at least 1 by GW3 so it is not the best strategy (especially as transferring Aguero out for a hit is madness!)

So inspired by the point hit taking plan by canadian football:

    my team:
    Frediel Federci
    Celluar Ivanovic WIlson Clichy Demel
    Yaya Bale Lampard Noble Maloney
    Petric Torres Kun

    GW2: ivanovic>Saylor, Torres>Roon. -4

    how does this sound?

ivanovic will easily made up the 4pts. hit anyway.

My team has been all set for over a week now, but hey there's problem now.

I was all set to play guthrie and taarabt in gw1, benching michu.
Now I'm thinking maybe I should play Michu after all, but who to bench?

Choices are pretty much these, take your pick

    a) play taarabt + guthrie, bench michu
    b) play taarabt + michu, bench guthrie
    c) play michu + guthrie and change taarabt for someone for gw2, but who? No money for 6,5 - so Noble is safe bet to play most weeks?

Something different from the very generic RMT’s going around. This is a quick list of differentials per team who could prove valuable I think as the season goes on. Not saying to start with the se alds but worth keeping an eye out for them as the year progresses

Arsenal – Gervinho (7.5m) – Owned by less than 1%. Classed as midfielder this year. If the new boys don’t settle can see him playing and scoring. Most of Arsenal priced about right though.

Aston Villa – Enda Stevens (4m), Ciaran Clark (4.5m), Barry Bannan (5m), Stephen Ireland (5.5m) – All have ownership less than 1%. Stevens might nail down the LB spot. Clark might be OOP in centre mid and has goal scoring ability. Bannan may be on set pieces. Ireland could get back to form of a few years back playing in the hole

Chelsea – Ramires (7m) – Liked by Di Matteo and being pushed further forward than he used to. Chelsea’s midfield is a minefield however!

Everton – Shane Duffy (4.5m), Marouane Fellaini (6.5m) – Duffy might get more chances to stake a claim at CB this year. I don’t rate Naismith so can see Fellaini playing further forward again and knows where the goal is. Needs to cut down the yellow cards though

Fulham – Alex Kacaniklic (4.5m) – If Dempsey leaves we could see him getting a more prominent role down the left. Knows where the goal is too

Liverpool – Sebastian Coates (5m) – If Agger leaves then it opens up a space at the back. With a season learning his trade he might get more gametime now

Man City – Aleksander Kolarov (6m) – Like Arsenal/Chelsea there’s not much to choose from. If they continue with 3-5-2 then this man might get more room to attack and get assists from the left while benefitting from clean sheets also. Tevez well documented but still more people have Dzeko in their team than him (???)

Man Utd – Rafael/Chris Smalling (5.5m) – As above with the lack of value but whoever nails down the RB spot will increase in value as the season goes on
Newcastle – Sylvian Marveaux (4.5m) – Really keen on him with Ben Afra not fit and injury prone we may see Marveaux on the RW. Think he will play a lot more than expected this season

Norwich – Steven Whittaker (4.5m) – Won’t be keeping many clean sheets but could pop up for a few goals I think

QPR – Shaun Wright-Phillips (5.5m) – Competition for places in midfield with Mackie etc dropping back but this could be the season SWP comes back to form.

Reading – Hal Robson-Kanu (4.5m) – With most plunging for Guthrie/Pog to cover Reading, Robson-Kanu might surprise a few people and could be also on penalties this year

Southampton – Danny Fox (4.5m), Seven Davis (5m) – Fox will be on corners and should pick up assists. Clean sheets will be at a minimum though. Davis should pick up assists and a few goals from midfield as he did at Rangers and FPL spell with Villa

Stoke – Jonathan Walters (6.5m) – Nothing new but people still not picking him as much as they should. On penalties and primarily a striker classed as a midfielder. Also Michael Tonge is appearing in more pre season games than usual but isn’t in FPL

Sunderland – Craig Gardner (5m) – All the take is Seesegnon, McClean, Larsson, Cuellar but Garnder is my pick. Currently playing in the hole in pre season. Will probably be a normal CM come kick off but knows where the goal is. I’ll mention David Meyler briefly too. If back fit watch out for him

Swansea – Wayne Routledge (5m) – Might be the year he starts regularly and always potential to cause problems

Tottenham – Jermaine Jenas (4.5m) – If he gets out on loan somewhere we may have a value player here. Otherwise it’s back to the usual names!

West Brom – Graham Dorrans (5.5m) – Along with Taraabt was the main man being talked about last year. Could slip under the radar this year and slip into being a goalscoring midfielder again

West Ham – All been mentioned here before. Only one who might not have been noticed is Gary O’Neill at 4.5m which is slightly undervalued

Wigan – Franco Di Santo (5.5m), Jean Beausejour (5.5m) – All I hear about is Shaun Maloney who I have no intention of picking. Di Santo scored well last year and now Hugo is gone will be the main man up front. Beausejour produced in the last few months with a high level of crosses.

HRK playing in midfield. Gets 4/5 goals a year. Doesn't get booked too often. Not nailed on starter but who is these days! Surprisingly took pre season penalty with Harte and Pog both on the pitch. Think he's something different to Guthrie that might be worth a look at.

Don't count on Clarke being played OOP this season with Holman in there. I can see him cementing a CB place with Vlaar though, so a decent pick nevertheless at 4.5. Williams all depends on what happens to Warnock.

Think they might play together. With Dunne out he should start CB. Might even fill in LB again when he comes back. And all fit I was thinking there's a chance they might go:

        Hutton------Dunne--------Vlaar------Stevens/Warnock
        ------------Holman---------------Clark/Bannan--------------

FuzzyWarbles, I like your squad - a lot - but for Fabio and Cole. I don't believe that you should be shifting about your defenders for GW3, particularly as you have Federici. Fabio - QPR have poor fixtures, and I believe that you ought to have a Newcastle or WBA man in here, instead.

agreed qpr fixtures are overall poor, but the good fixtures fall on weeks where i need him. i had planned to start with a city defender in place of cole but i want to see things shake out there first. barring injury or loss of place, i am happy with only changing cole->city defender gw3

Swansea are also near to capturing 1.FC Kaiserslautern'a Israeli striker Itay Shechter on a year-long loan.

This would be a bizarre signing as Schechter was only fourth striker in a team that got relegated from the Bundesliga last season, and whom Lautern are very keen to unload from their wage bill.

If Aguero plays in the friendly vs Germany on 15 Aug, then I will probably getting Tevez for him for the first GW...

I want to drop one of my midfield and replace with a 4.5 - 5.5 to have a bit of funds in the bank for the following week. Any suggestions?
    Lamps, Ireland, Bale, Pienaar, Larsson.
Or is it better to have a better player sitting on the bench?
