Steven Naismith nets a hat-trick as Everton hammer AEK Athens in Tony Hibbert’s testimonial. David De Gea defies Barcelona as United record their fourth clean sheet in five pre-season matches, James McClean scores in Sunderland’s draw at Derby, while Tony Pulis reveals he expects to be without Robert Huth for at least a couple of weeks after the defender contracted viral meningitis:

Everton 4 AEK Athens 1
Toffees new boy Steven Naismith leapt to the attention of Fantasy managers after registering a 30-minute hat-trick as David Moyes’ men won for the first time in four matches last night. While Tony Hibbert hogged the headlines after ending his barren streak with a stunning 25-yard effort in his own testimonial, Naismith’s deadly eye for goal suggested he could well be set to offer us a strong mid-price alternative across the Fantasy games. Playing in “the hole” behind former Glasgow Rangers team mate Nikica Jelavic, Naismith was only handed 45 minutes by Moyes before departing at half-time but his first game at Goodison suggested he looks hugely promising ahead of the new campaign. Steven Pienaar’s creativity was supreme throughout; the South African provided two assists, while his corner kick eventually led to Naismith’s third – clearly, the former Spurs man is wasting little time in returning to the form he displayed on loan at Goodison in the second half of last season.

Everton Starting XI: Howard (Mucha); Hibbert, Heitinga (Duffy), Distin, Baines (Barkley); Osman (Rodwell), Gibson (Neville), Fellaini (Gueye), Pienaar (Anichebe); Naismith (Coleman); Jelavic (Vellios)

Barcelona 0 Man United 0 (Barca won 2-0 on penalties)
David De Gea got the nod between the posts for United’s game with Barcelona last night and was superb throughout the 90 minutes for the Old Trafford outfit. Despite Sir Alex Ferguson indicating that he faces a real selection dilemma when picking his first-choice keeper for the upcoming campaign, De Gea surely boosted his chances of making the opener against Everton on Monday August 20 with a string of saves defying the La Liga side time after time. Once again, Antonio Valencia began at right-back due to a lack of defensive options, affording Nani and Ashley Young the chance to start on the flanks, while Sir Alex Ferguson rolled out a 4-4-2 with Wayne Rooney partnered by Danny Welbeck. Rooney missed a spot-kick and was replaced by Shinji Kagawa after the break – the latter has now come on as a sub in the previous couple of matches but failed to provide the necessary spark; United are without a goal in their last two and are struggling offensively right now, with just three times in five games this pre-season. Defensively, though, there is plenty cause for optimism; this was their third back-to-back clean sheet, with the club conceding just once so far over the summer period.

Post-match, the United boss commented on the speculation surrounding the club’s attempts to sign Robin Van Persie after their interest in Lucas Moura ended when the Brazilian opted for Paris St Germain instead. Despite some media outlets claiming that Van Persie deal could go through yesterday, the transfer failed to materialise but Ferguson admitted he was still optimistic of clinching the Dutchman’s signature:

We’ve made a bid. They (Arsenal) have been trying to negotiate with other clubs. We have to persevere. Hopefully it comes our way. I don’t know what Arsenal’s thoughts are because they’re not giving anything away.

Man United Starting XI: De Gea; Valencia, Vidic (Carrick 46), Ferdinand (Wootton 83), Evra; Nani, Scholes, Anderson (Powell 79),Young; Welbeck (Berbatov 67), Rooney (Kagawa 46)

Derby 1 Sunderland 1
Ahmed Elmohamady was handed a rare starting role for Sunderland last night as Martin O’Neill took the chance to tinker with his backline for the trip to Pride Park. John O’Shea moved into the heart of defence, while Carlos Cuellar began the game at left-back for the Wearsiders with Craig Gardner once again playing in the hole behind a lone striker. Elmohamady’s versatility allowed him to be shifted to right midfield after the break, with David Meyler moving to right-back as O’Neill chose to utilise Seb Larsson in a more central position. James McClean looked a handful for much of the evening – he and Cuellar both struck the woodwork before the former grabbed his side’s first goal in three matches from a Kieran Richardson assist.

Sunderland Starting XI: Mignolet; Elmohamady, Adams (Cattermole 46), O’Shea, Cuellar; Larsson, Meyler (Noble 75), Colback, McClean; Gardner (Richardson 46); Campbell

In Other News…
Tony Pulis has revealed he expects to be without the services of Robert Huth for the start of the season after it was confirmed the defender has contracted viral meningitis. The German was admitted to hospital on Monday and, after undergoing test, is set to be sidelined for a fortnight at the earliest, according to his manager:

He is progressing well in his recovery. Although it is too early to predict the length of his absence, it is likely to be at least two weeks before he is available to return to action.

Pulis looks set to have US international Geoff Cameron to call upon for the opening day trip to Reading, however. The versatile defender has obtained a work permit after the Potters boss presented the case to an appeal panel and could well be set to slot in alongside Ryan Shawcross in the heart of defence due to Huth’s unfortunate absence.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Sorry about re post but regarding 3rd striker.

    So Pog or Graham?

If I miss Pog big pt haul I would be furious. And regarding Graham if we looks closer the fixtures qpr WHM SUN avl they aren’t that easy from attacking perspective. QPR were solid at home near the end of last year, WHM usually brings CS’s away from home they will defend there, then the MON factor and the Villa game I think its ok because of the new attacking manager.

Also they will probably loose Sinclair meaning Routledge and Dyer are starting. They were 4.5m mid recently and I still see them as that kind of a potential. Michu and Guzman need to gel, they won’t shape in to the team right now.

So is he worth 1m more? I think maybe not. Please opinion and more facts.
    Cheers,

According to the projections Pog is the better bet with Graham 2nd. Can't argue against Pog really unless you think he is a bit overrated. I think a lot of people on here would say Pog is overrated.

West Ham clean sheets away from home? Not sure I'm sold on that. Last time I checked, the Martin O'Neill factor had worn off in about February.

There's ways to make those fixtures look less appealing but the fact is, not many teams have as kind-first 4 fixtures as Swansea.

I'd rather spend the £1m more on Graham who is settled in a team which had a great season last time out than cross my fingers on a decent DGW punt.

      Guthrie & Graham & £1m vs Pog & Michu.

Pog is actually a pretty horrible option when you think about it. If there was no DGW people wouldn't even consider him. and the DGW itself they play Stoke so that will be a scrap and travel to Stamford Bridge. Avoid!

    Federici (Given)

    A.Cole / Lescott / Hangeland - (Fabio, Barnett)

    YAYA / Mata / Kagawa / Guthrie - (Noble)

    Aguero (C) / Torres +2.0 / Pogrebnyak

    - Thoughts?
    - I love YAYA at the moment, think he will smash it in attacking role like last season end and pre season... will have to see and monitor. Hes a BEAST.
    - Kagawa is playing a godd attacking creative role at moment and seems to be ahead of Chica or Wellbeck in team.
    - Torres to Rooney 100%... roo will smash i just feel i need torres even though im sure he will fail.
    - Aguero (C) / anyone with me????

Rooney will come good, he must,
Kagawa i agree with you, noone knows how it will start, i think i will jiggle it around and go with Dempsey to start with as long as he stays,
MATA Surely must start, best mid last season, who else is more likely to start for Che?

Lescott situ? Hes fine unless they sign someone new isnt he?

The most underrated teams going into the FPL season must surely be Liverpool and Norwich. Hardly seen any of their players in RMT's. Not sure they are worth no investment whatsoever across the board.

Yeah its funny how the season ticker skews our thinking so much. I mean no investment whatsoever is pretty extraordinary. You'd think they were primed to be in the bottom 3 after the first 6 weeks.

Liverpool have a new manager working with a squad that has lots of new additions and potentially some losses of key players. No one knows whats going to happen with their squad in terms of starters and rotation. They had poor form coming out of last season and fantasy managers had to deal with a goal or assist being as likely to come from Reina as Suarez. On top of this they have a really poor set of fixtures to start the season with.

Sure they scored points in these games last season, but figuring out who will score them and determining whether they have long term value over the next 5+ gameweeks is asking for too much faith for investment.

I agree your point about Norwich especially about their defenders. But what is your reasoning for Liverpool? They have been unable to improve their squad, still dont have a decent goalscorer and average players all around.

I can understand why people are staying away but with absolutely everyone to stay away I think there is potential to cash in if you think they will be competitive despite the tough fixtures. They are still a top half team who could beat or match anyone on their day.

In general they could do well, but fantasy wise they dont have many options. Suarez cant score at a good rate and I dont know why people expected him to do so last season, when he has not been able to in his entire career. Only options are defensive or Gerrard if he plays further forward ( in Siggy position) but the pre season has not shown that. Also Downing could be an option but there are better options at his price. Even if they do well with the tough fixtures, they are unlikely to score big. As Liverpool have not been a big scoring team for a few seasons already, and Swansea last season also had big problems scoring. I personally only see defensive investment potential there, unless Gerrard gets back to form of old.

Defensive potential is always there, especially as Rodgers is a good defensive coach as well. But with their super defensive assistant coach moving to WBA I will enjoy this first 6 week of crappy fixtures to see what will happen with them. I am also hoping that Agger goes to city as that will present us with a budget option at the back.

If a forum with different topics were available It would be a lot easier for people to find discussions or information they are interested in, for example a sub forum for RMT. It would help to build their community and in turn it would help boost their profits

I'd say your defence is too expensive and wrecking your forward line. If you're going to choose a 6.0m defender, make sure he will play every game (i.e. don't pick Zab)

Bent is nice choice, as is Tevez but you won't find much love for Vaz Te on here. I think there are much better options for just a little bit more money - spend the extra is my advice.

      To RYAN: http://www.financialfairplay.co.uk/latest-news/understanding-events-at-liverpool

This is a very good article about the financial situation at liverpool, it shows they are not where they want to be in terms of personell. And I this makes me extra cautious as I think many of the current players may not fit in to Rodgers system and only Allen wont solve this problem.

Crickey they are going through a tough spell. Can these players fit into the passing game Rodgers will look to implement? If they can then you'd think their defence will be solid but if they can't then they may struggle to score goals. They really need to sell Carrol for a 20m+ fee and possibly Agger as well
