Steven Naismith nets a hat-trick as Everton hammer AEK Athens in Tony Hibbert’s testimonial. David De Gea defies Barcelona as United record their fourth clean sheet in five pre-season matches, James McClean scores in Sunderland’s draw at Derby, while Tony Pulis reveals he expects to be without Robert Huth for at least a couple of weeks after the defender contracted viral meningitis:

Everton 4 AEK Athens 1
Toffees new boy Steven Naismith leapt to the attention of Fantasy managers after registering a 30-minute hat-trick as David Moyes’ men won for the first time in four matches last night. While Tony Hibbert hogged the headlines after ending his barren streak with a stunning 25-yard effort in his own testimonial, Naismith’s deadly eye for goal suggested he could well be set to offer us a strong mid-price alternative across the Fantasy games. Playing in “the hole” behind former Glasgow Rangers team mate Nikica Jelavic, Naismith was only handed 45 minutes by Moyes before departing at half-time but his first game at Goodison suggested he looks hugely promising ahead of the new campaign. Steven Pienaar’s creativity was supreme throughout; the South African provided two assists, while his corner kick eventually led to Naismith’s third – clearly, the former Spurs man is wasting little time in returning to the form he displayed on loan at Goodison in the second half of last season.

Everton Starting XI: Howard (Mucha); Hibbert, Heitinga (Duffy), Distin, Baines (Barkley); Osman (Rodwell), Gibson (Neville), Fellaini (Gueye), Pienaar (Anichebe); Naismith (Coleman); Jelavic (Vellios)

Barcelona 0 Man United 0 (Barca won 2-0 on penalties)
David De Gea got the nod between the posts for United’s game with Barcelona last night and was superb throughout the 90 minutes for the Old Trafford outfit. Despite Sir Alex Ferguson indicating that he faces a real selection dilemma when picking his first-choice keeper for the upcoming campaign, De Gea surely boosted his chances of making the opener against Everton on Monday August 20 with a string of saves defying the La Liga side time after time. Once again, Antonio Valencia began at right-back due to a lack of defensive options, affording Nani and Ashley Young the chance to start on the flanks, while Sir Alex Ferguson rolled out a 4-4-2 with Wayne Rooney partnered by Danny Welbeck. Rooney missed a spot-kick and was replaced by Shinji Kagawa after the break – the latter has now come on as a sub in the previous couple of matches but failed to provide the necessary spark; United are without a goal in their last two and are struggling offensively right now, with just three times in five games this pre-season. Defensively, though, there is plenty cause for optimism; this was their third back-to-back clean sheet, with the club conceding just once so far over the summer period.

Post-match, the United boss commented on the speculation surrounding the club’s attempts to sign Robin Van Persie after their interest in Lucas Moura ended when the Brazilian opted for Paris St Germain instead. Despite some media outlets claiming that Van Persie deal could go through yesterday, the transfer failed to materialise but Ferguson admitted he was still optimistic of clinching the Dutchman’s signature:

We’ve made a bid. They (Arsenal) have been trying to negotiate with other clubs. We have to persevere. Hopefully it comes our way. I don’t know what Arsenal’s thoughts are because they’re not giving anything away.

Man United Starting XI: De Gea; Valencia, Vidic (Carrick 46), Ferdinand (Wootton 83), Evra; Nani, Scholes, Anderson (Powell 79),Young; Welbeck (Berbatov 67), Rooney (Kagawa 46)

Derby 1 Sunderland 1
Ahmed Elmohamady was handed a rare starting role for Sunderland last night as Martin O’Neill took the chance to tinker with his backline for the trip to Pride Park. John O’Shea moved into the heart of defence, while Carlos Cuellar began the game at left-back for the Wearsiders with Craig Gardner once again playing in the hole behind a lone striker. Elmohamady’s versatility allowed him to be shifted to right midfield after the break, with David Meyler moving to right-back as O’Neill chose to utilise Seb Larsson in a more central position. James McClean looked a handful for much of the evening – he and Cuellar both struck the woodwork before the former grabbed his side’s first goal in three matches from a Kieran Richardson assist.

Sunderland Starting XI: Mignolet; Elmohamady, Adams (Cattermole 46), O’Shea, Cuellar; Larsson, Meyler (Noble 75), Colback, McClean; Gardner (Richardson 46); Campbell

In Other News…
Tony Pulis has revealed he expects to be without the services of Robert Huth for the start of the season after it was confirmed the defender has contracted viral meningitis. The German was admitted to hospital on Monday and, after undergoing test, is set to be sidelined for a fortnight at the earliest, according to his manager:

He is progressing well in his recovery. Although it is too early to predict the length of his absence, it is likely to be at least two weeks before he is available to return to action.

Pulis looks set to have US international Geoff Cameron to call upon for the opening day trip to Reading, however. The versatile defender has obtained a work permit after the Potters boss presented the case to an appeal panel and could well be set to slot in alongside Ryan Shawcross in the heart of defence due to Huth’s unfortunate absence.

Yaya Toure is appealing. He missed quite a few games because of the ACON, and has a good PPG ratio. Any reason why I shouldn't get him?

Can't help but feel this is a player who tends to excel towards the end of the season where players and teams start to tire and put in worse performances where as he maintains his level of performances and begins to become much more devastating, grabbing more goals, and advancing more.

      Just my two cents.

Sticking to a 3-4-3/3-5-2 formation all the season. Any advice on tactics?

Thinking 1 heavy lifter in the back (Verm/Cole), two in the middle (Mata, Bale) and two up front (Rooney-Aguero + budget)

3-4-3 or 3-5-2 is preferable with 7 attackers. I'd prefer Lescott/Kompany or Evra for your heavy hitter at the back. Unless you want a differential defender with attacking potential then it has to be Vermaelen or Baines for me.

Not sure about Mata starting the season, Lampard may be safer. Torres instead of Rooney for GW1 is also good and have £2.0m in the bank to sub Rooney in after.

i usually play 3-4-3 however i have to admit that the best formation is 3-5-2 assuming an OOP is available like dempsey last season or the likes of ronaldo gerrard and lampard couple fo seasons ago

WR, what was rubbish about Forca's post, the fact that Sigurdsson might play on the right?
Because if Adebayor doesn't sign, which is looking likely, VDV will be on penalties and he will play in the hole..

I wouldn't say Ade not signing is likely. Still think he'll come Levy is just being Levy.

I'd put VdV or Sigurdsson on penos anyway (or rotate the 3 of them like Fulham did). ade never fills me with confidence when taking them wheras VdV and Sigurdsson take beastly pens.

after all AVD fancies a 4-3-3 and with a trio of parker sigur and sandro, and bale lennon and a striker up front, thats pretty much how he converted chelsea

Siggy will not play on the right instead of Lennon, he says VdV 'should' play in the hole when Siggy is clearly favourite for that spot, he says VdV 'will' take penalties. All based on the assumption that Spurs won't sign Adebayor another striker, Lennon won't play and VdV won't be injured. Siggy and VdV may well be rotated sometimes so he may be right occasionaly. Not enough to make him a good pick for the start of the season

Which do you think has more chance from a statistical point of view of getting a clean sheet,

    A) A bottom 12 side + the newly promoted sides at home against a top 5 side (MUN, MCI, ARS, TOT, CHE)

    or

    B) A bottom 12 side + the newly promoted sides away against another bottom 12 side + the newly promoted side

Considering Kagawa has been selected to play for Japan in Tokyo a few days before the season starts, there's a chance he won't play first game. This is one of the first teams I've seen that doesn't have two big power hitters up front, and it looks nice and balanced. It does make it difficult for you if you somehow want Rooney as well as keeping Aguero, but it looks alright

I'm taking a look at the most selected players and there are one or two picks that the masses have gone after that are interesting. Cerny has been picked by 15% of people, Shawcross by 22.9%, Allen by 14.6% and Modric by 6.6%. Am I the only one who finds one or two of them strange?

I'm not even 100% sure of our defence. I would have said last week that it would be Bennet, Turner, Barnett and Martin, but looking at who played in the game against Hull, I'd say Bennet and Turner are the two more likely to play in the first game. Russel Martin should be right up there, not sure why he didn't play against Hull

People see Modric and think ''He's a good player, he should do well'' and pick him for his relatively middling value.
People who don't understand the game don't see it like most here.
Young children etc, will opt for players like Modric and Scholes when they see their prices.

Incredibly pissed off.. That's another thought that entered my mind. But the Olympic final is 7 days before the start of the Prem so, provided he doesn't get injured or is given a rest by SAF, Rafael should start. Especially given Smalling's injury and now that Phil Jones has gone home from the tour with some injury as well.

It's tough to say. If one of our CBs is out (i.e. Whittaker), Barnett should be the first guy to be thrown in. But there isn't so much competition at RB for Bennet, who is one for the future. I think you could go for either one really

I'm having a crack at El Ahmadi, but I don't have any clear idea how that will work out. Defensive Mid in an attacking team. Does that equal more goals & assists than normal (for him) or less?

what u guys make of this? could pay off if the forwards play to their potentials...

    Freidel - Fed
Cole - Lescott - Clyne - Fabio - (another 4m mid, not sure who)
    Yaya - Ramires - Noble - Pienaar - Guthrie
    Aguero - Rooney - Torres

GW 2 swap cole for a 6.5 def that has attacking potential?

    Cheers

Ur Midfield smells of donkey poo. But u obviously know this. This wouldn't be my type of strategy. If u need to shoehorn in big hitting midfielders in gw2 it will require hits.

yeah i just thought 3 massive forwards could get massive amounts of goals, then midfield i just need 4 playing every week; yaya and pienaar should do alright- ramires can do well if he plays a lot- nobles got penos.

think this tactic will only work if rvp dont go to united and torres hits form again...

pre-seasons mean jack! its basically managers testing out different tactics that they probably wont use! graham isn't good enough at premier league level- doesn't matter how he played against championship teams in a friendly...

and rest of teams alright, i'd get city defensive cover somehow and personally would avoid mata/eden as they're expensive and we're not sure how often they'll play! just my opinion tho

Is anyone with Mata/Hazard really beginning to consider Lampard? I'm only going to have a Chelsea midfielder playing in the 1st two gameweeks and I'd rather have someone who I know is going to get 150+ minutes.

Packed midfield. I'm sure we'll learn more from the Community Shield but at the moment Torres and Lampard like the combo to get most gametime. As Smurf said below everyone would pick Mata if he was assured of decent gametime but it's too much of a risk perhaps...

Yeah I think at the moment Lampard is the best option. If I knew Mata would get alot of game time then I would rather have him, but as it stands I think Lampard is the safer bet. Hazard doesn't interest me at all though.
