In the second of our “Burning Question” articles our contributors attempt the seemingly impossible; to predict the form of Wigan, arguably the most unpredictable team in Premier League history.

Take last season’s exploits, for example. At the end of October 2011, Wigan’s future as a top-flight team looked bleak as they sat bottom of the table, licking their wounds after six successive defeats. By the end of January they were four points adrift of the pack and seemingly down and out but, to Roberto Martinez’s credit, the Latics ushered in one of the top-flight’s greatest ever spring cleans. From March to May the Lancashire outfit notched up seven precious victories and claimed the scalps of some of the Premier League’s biggest names. The 2-1 victory away to Liverpool on March 24 was just the start as, incredibly, Manchester United, Arsenal and Newcastle all succumbed to a rejuvenated Wigan.

The key reason for the change was a shift in formation, using Emerson Boyce and Jean Beausejour as wingbacks in a 3-4-3 in attack that reverted to a 5-4-1 when in defence. This tactic relied heavily on the engines of Boyce and Beausejour and both duly delivered with gutsy and creative displays. Whether they are able to continue their fine form down the flanks this coming season will be crucial to the Latics’ success, as will be the goal scoring form of Franco di Santo, the most likely contender to spearhead the three-pronged attack alongside Shaun Maloney and Chelsea target Victor Moses. The early fixture list has also been reasonably kind (CHE, sot, STO, mun, FUL, sun) with only a couple of giants looming on the horizon for Wigan to bring down to size.

Mark says…
I’d really like to think that they can hit the ground running. Their incredible end of season form, defying the fixture list, was one of my highlights of last season. At one point, with Victor Moses conspiring to ensure I was ridiculed on every turn, I said some rather harsh things about Wigan in the ScoutCast – Granville will remember them well. I went home and felt so awful, I edited my rant before we published. That’s how much I admire Martinez – I’ll happily edit the ScoutCast to be sure not to upset him.

Last season was a pure victory for the likeable Spaniard and his defiant belief in a tactical system and the players he had available to implement it. While he barely registered on the Fantasy richter scale, Jean Beausejour turned out to be a key figure. The accuracy of his crosses from the left was unreal, while the previously ordinary Emmerson Boyce suddenly turned into a source of assists and goals from the right. Even Moses delivered on the potential I’d highlighted earlier in the season, while Franco Di Santo started looking like a centre-forward. I’ve seen a rag-tag bunch of individuals pull off a similar footballing feat before – but that was in Escape to Victory. Even I will hesitate to compare Moses to Pele.

Martinez has managed to hold on to what he’s got and hasn’t upset the applecart with new signings that threaten to re-organise the tactics. A 3-4-3 looks set to remain but the question is – are other teams wise to the approach and ready to counter it? The meet with Chelsea is a classic opening day clash. Previously we’ve seen Wigan hit the day one headlines for the wrong reason but, if they can prove themselves against a Chelsea defence that has looked shaky in pre-season, then bandwagons will start rolling for their home fixtures with Stoke and Fulham. For me, Shaun Maloney looks cheap. If he stays fit he could be outstanding in the budget bracket. It’s a big “if” though.

Anorak says…
The traditional summer pursuit for Dave Whelan’s Wigan has them hawking around their star talent, their headline act that finished the season with such a bang. This so often leaves the Wigan manager to pick up the pieces and prepare the team for another year without their main man. This season’s patsy appears to be Victor Moses, with Chelsea lined up to pay the top dollar. However, even if Moses remains at the DW come September, the departure of midfield enforcer Momo Diamé to West Ham has already set the tone and thinned the squad. I fear Wigan and their conveyor belt of young prospects will have a fight on their hands again.

Granville says…
It seems that every season Wigan start on the back foot, having to re-adjust to the loss of a influential player. Last term it was Charles N’Zogbia, this close season they’ve already lost Momo Diame and Hugo Rodallega and if Chelsea get their way, Victor Moses is about to join the exodus. This all points to a tough start again, although having said that, last term they started with a win and a couple of draws. Initially their fixture list is rather mixed. They play Chelsea and United in the first five games, but either side they have home encounters against poor travellers, Fulham and Stoke. Much will depend on Di Santo and the pre-season free scoring, Mauro Boselli: Jean Beausejour will supply from the flanks, but can they really deliver the goals?

Andy says…
God only knows what Wigan offer us this season. Roberto Martinez managed to get Emmerson Boyce to score two Premier League goals in a game: that miracle alone surely tells us to expect the unexpected. A team with a strike force of the often inept Franco Di Santo, the anonymous Conor Sammon and a catatonic Hugo Rodallega, somehow survived and so it’s hard to question the man at the helm. With Mauro Boselli back in the ranks, Martinez has another source of “hidden” talent to work with. More than likely, though, relegation will finally beckon.

Bale and Silva. I think it's sensible to have Aguero and Rooney/Torres though so Yaya over Silva to save money. I'm personally going Siggy over Bale by the way but that's just me. For now.

That team will come a cropper gwk 3 when qpr's fixtures stiffen and your Chelsea players don't play. Also williams is a big risk. I'd ditch one of cisse and fabio. Also mid is too cheap... Very little room to jump on a 6.5 bandwagon like Piennar or McLean.

So I'm going to try something new and ignore the GW1 DGW's and ask for RMT's on a team I have planned to form after shifting out my Chelsea cameos 😉

    Friedel/Green

Coloccini/Kelly (Ful)/Williams/Mariappa (or whichever 4m holds starting place at Reading)/Cuellar

Hazard (or Bale or Mata based on form)/Kagawa/Sinclair/McClean/Cabaye (or C. Adam on form)

    Pogbrenyak/Aguero/Rooney

Notes: Newcastle and Sunderland rotate really well to let me have consistent home games in defence and midfield.

I could drop Aguero to Tevez to upgrade Sinclair to Bale.

Aiming to earn enough money to swap Pogbren to D. Graham/Petric

True, mind you Walcott is more effective in away games anyways ^^

Horrible fixtures, but then the gunners will create chances and goals regardless. Already have Man City, Utd, Spurs and Chelsea attacking coverage, so may go the full hog and cover Arsenal.

Your midfield worries me quite a bit. Unless you plan on 4 at the back quite often I'd really look at cheaper options in defence. You could chuck out Cole after GW1 or bring in Cuellar for Hangeland/Rangel as he rotates nicely with S. Taylor. Actually I'd encourage Cole to Cuellar so you have a lot more to invest in the midfield.

I can't fault the GKs or forwards at all. I'm a bit pessimistic about Swansea's CS chances this season and S Taylor will be eased back in- also Europa League commitments worry me on the Newcastle front. Midfield seems a little light but they're decent picks... bar Michu IMO.

        cheers man.

Completely agree with your point about Saylor and Newcastle, will look at that.

Unfortunately, Swansea's early fixtures are too good ignore regardless of the grim season that may face them. I think I'll keep Rangel but get rid of him after their fixtures dip.

Yup, I agree that my midfield is light. I'll do some downgrading and hopefully have enough to Ramires ➡ Lamps/Hazard/Mata

        Thanks again.

Id favor Graham over Petric. Proven and all that jazz. Same with Michu, not buying into the hype quite yet as he has yet to play 1 minute of premier league football. Not Ramires biggest fan, id look for a 2nd big mid (9.0+ range) rather then him. You have allot invested in that defense if your going 3-4-3 like most.

Thanks Brian, good advice right there. I'll try my best to upgrade Ramires. The funds will come from the defence as I completely agree with your point about my overspending. Is it worth downgrading Michu to Maloney to fund the Ramires to, say, Hazard move or is that just counter-productive?

Yeah id consider a move like that, not ideal having noble and maloney, but they do rotate and a 2nd big mid is arguably fairly essential. Id pick one of Mata or lampard certainly as a big mid!

Self control. Last time i did H2H leagues i found myself working out who my weekly opposition would likely start. Looking at how much they had in the bank and who that would enable them to bring in. And who would they captain?

                It's bad news for me.

That's because neither Siggy nor VDV will play wide right, Lennon will. When VDV plays, he plays in the hole with Siggy part of the deeper midfield two. When VDV doesn't i.e. when he's unfit then Siggy will play in the hole. That's my understanding especially with what's gone on so far pre-season.

why siggy wouldn't be able to play wide?

if Harry used Kranjcar and even Modric at wings siggy sure can play that position as well

He is an attacking midfielder and everything about his game is central. I am not aware of him ever playing wide and he definitely hasn't done so thus far under AVB (even with VDV fit) so I'm sure he won't.

Has Siggy been playing there in pre season? Didn't realise he was such a box to box midfielder. I'd want him in the final third if i were AVB

Have a look at the Pre-Season tab at the top of the site and the Scout Notes on Tottenham, that's where I found out. I agree, I'm not sure what AVB's plans are for him but he definitely strikes me as a player to play in the hole and has a great shot. Also, VDV has played in the deeper central 2 for Netherlands so I am a bit confused.

it would be wired to see VDV playing deeper

he is brilliant player but his work rate just sucks, and he is lazy

waste of talent if he will play deepier

I wouldn't play VDV anywhere near there. He is a liability that deep. If Modric goes they will have to go out and get a replacement. Probably Moutinho

So Siggy and VDV can play in the same team? Have they done so in preseason so far?

      I would have thought:

      Sandro/Parker---Huddlestone

      Lennon----Siggy/VDV----Bale

      Defoe.

Ok. Let's try this one, rmt:

    Szczesny - Federici

    Williams - Coloccini - A Cole - Cuellar - McCartney

Bale - Valencia - Yaya Toure - Mata - Maloney

    Aguero - Defoe - Pogrebnyak

What do you think? I'm nervous about not enough up top. Happy with def and gk with enough to change this if required as is balanced. Mid is my strength.

Taking a punt on him as spurs have no one else. Either him or Ba. Ba not definitely playing as front two with Cisse. Newcastle may find being in Europe a stretch for their squad.

Three cheapies in def is dangerous; front three might justify, but Rooney has not looked good so not worth weak defense.

Let's talk Michu. He scored 4 braces in a free scoring team last year. Without that it was 7 goals. I think flop and potentially Swansea to struggle big time. Before they bought soggy in last year there went on a no win streak. His goals turned them around. I think Rogers is more secure at the back than laudrup too.

Soggy was indeed a big loss, but the whole point of Michu is punt. There are some soft fixtures there and he might just make an impact. If you doubt, then pick another of the 6.5 punts.

I'm not convinced on 31 year old Petric. Does he have strength and pace for premier league?

Ireland has had it. Ever since his gran died. Wait. She didn't. Never make it anywhere near my team for that behaviour. Have you also seen his range rover?

I said it the other day, if Liverpool get of to a good start (dont pay so much attention to early fixtures) the players for FFPL offer value for money. More so than any other club maybe apart from Newcastle (if they can replicate last seasons form) First of all take into account clean sheets at Swansea when Rodgers was there last season. Also look at some of the players with a 100+ points for a newly promoted side.

A goalkeeper at 6.0, who could flourish under Rodgers management, like he used to under Benitez.

3-4 SOLID defenders, costing no more than 6.5. (Enrique can be dodgy.)

1 Midfielder at 9.5 in Gerrard, who'll take the majority of set pieces, hopefully he can stay fit for a full season. Lucas at just 5.0, and will play every game. Downing could also thrive under Rodgers and shock a lot of people this season after a poor first, at just 6.5. Allen on the way at 5.5. Shelvey bound to get games and at 5.5.

Suarez at 9.5. Borini at 8.0 (bit to much for me)

But compare it up against Man City, Man United, Chelsea and even Arsenal to some extent, value for money or what?!? ESPECIALLY if they get of to a good start! Watch the prices climb and the bandwagons start if they do.

    (excuse the length)

I'm considering both Lennon and Marin

Lennon: similar to the Tevez/Aguero contrast, he provides a cheaper route into the Spurs MFD and if friendlies are anything to go by, he should start.

Marin: I've been told by a knowledgable blue that he will start while Oscar is away and having read all their friendly reports, he seems to pop up very often.

Feel free to tear me open.
