Dugout Discussion – Community Shield

We’re back. As the Olympic flame begins to flicker, the football season crunches through the gears to take up the pace. Today’s Community Shield is the official curtain raiser and offers up a Man City vs Chelsea clash that will surely whet the appetite for the feast to come.

The first Dugout Discussion post of the season is here, then, with our Chatroom also open for those who fancy some real-time exchanges.

The team news from Villa Park goes a lot like this…

Chelsea are without one of their new midfield signings, as Marko Marin continues to nurse a hamstring which threatens to derail his double Gameweek prospects. Without the option of Marin, Roberto Di Matteo looks to be going with a 4-3-3, which could similarly shift to pack the midfield with a 4-5-1. Significantly, Juan Mata starts along with Eden Hazard: the Spaniard looks to be playing on the right of compatriot Fernando Torres, with Hazard given the left flank role. Mikel holds a midfield start, with Frank Lampard and Ramires alongside him. John Terry skippers the side in a familiar back four which has Branislav Ivanovic in the right-back role and David Luiz given the nod over Gary Cahill who sits on the bench.

City are without both Gareth Barry and Micah Richards through injury, while reports of a back problem for Joe Hart are confirmed as Costel Pantilimon starts in goal. Ahead of him it looks like a familiar 4-4-2, although there is talk of Roberto Mancini lining up in the 3-5-2 that he’s used throughout the pre-season. Stefan Savic is given the nod alongside Vincent Kompany who recovers from a knock to start: Lescott is presumably being preserved for next weekend. Pablo Zabaleta and, interestingly, Aleksandar Kolarov both get starts, with Clichy benched. It could be we see Zabaleta employed as a defensive three, with Kolarov and James Milner used as wing-backs. David Silva is kept on the bench after his Euro 2012 campaign and, with Barry also absent, Nigel De Jong gets the nod alongside Yaya Toure. Carlos Tevez will be expected to provide the support for Sergio Aguero up front; Mario Balotelli is out of the equation through conjunctivitis, apparently.

Let’s hope the match is a sight for his sore eyes. Enjoy the game.

    Ok, heres my take on the first half (for what its worth)

    Chelsea.

    Outplayed by city in centre of the park.
    Hazard seems lively, and could be fpl good points scorer.
    Mata seems to be playing closer to Torres, but to me has has been quiet.
    Torres although quiet, took his one chnace very well switching to his left foot.
    Lampard a little deeper, but still seems to threat the goal.

    City.

    Look good in new formation.
    Not sure about Zabelta at centre def of a 3. I would imagine Richards and lescott be the other 2 unless Agger or someone signs soon.
    Could Milner keep the right Wang back spot?
    Kolarov almost playing as a winger. Great delivery - but clichy could do equally as well (maybe not the delivery front but certainly bombing on)
    De mong and yoyo owning mf. However if they stick with fromation I imagine nasri and silva sharing one spot. Rodwell perhaps taking de mongs spot?
    As for the forwards, Kun quiet. Tevez busy but so is a headless chicken.

    So for me fpl wise it confirms...

    1. A cole 100% in my team
    2. Torres has to be worth it for the dgw if nothing else.
    3. I will keep lamps, but I am interested in Hazard in 2nd half.

    4. Keeping Aguero at moment.
    5. city defender. Yes, maybe Zab? Not sure...

    It'll be interesting to see what happens when Silva is back. I can't see Silva or Nasri taking Milner's role. I just don't think this 3-5-2 formation suits City's squad tbh.

      I think Hazard looks classy, probably trying too hard. Once he settles down, gets to the Bridge and plays lesser teams, he could be on fire. Cuts in, goes either way, decent shot. I'll be swapping Mata for him.

      I think I'll be using hazard from gw1. He's looking lively and will be playing in a front three so should be in and about the right area to assist/score surely? Never been too confident with ramires - disappears for games and is a card magnet

    Not sure my comment posted properly but here goes:

    Ivanovic was a definite red. All two footed tackles should be straight reds because they are completely unnecessary! In the whole time I've played football I've never had to do a tackle were one foot wouldn't suffice.

    I ruptured my anterior cruciate ligament with a two footed tackle so I know first hand the damage they can do.

    "In addition, and in order to address uncertainty over disciplinary sanctions in pre-season friendlies, sanctions for red cards shown in such fixtures will not now apply to competitive first team games. Any such sanction will apply only in the same competition (i.e. other friendlies including The FA Community Shield)."
