Imagine the SCENES if Haaland is dropped for Brentford.

    What would they be like?

Gonna wait on this of course, but early thoughts:

    Jota + Darwin -> H.Chan + Solanke (-4) ?

Let’s me field 11 with Gusto, Palmer, Bradley on the bench and Frees up funds for Gross -> Salah 27

Gosh it has been hard going against Saka.

Successfully picking differentials like Rodri and Toney who have been returning points for my team feels great but barely treading water against his massive EO

Jota to Saka for GW26 was always in the plans but I'm so ready to pull the trigger now

      2. Jerse

Why wild card. My reason was GW25 involved doubles containing the best two attacking sides with very good fixtures. I also had a couple of weak spots in my team that could also be sorted. Going into GW24, due to Salah's absence I had one Liverpool player and two Man C players. I did not want to go down the hits route and I also had no easy way of getting to Trent. Salah looked doubtful until the second game of GW25 at best so Jota and Nunez minutes were looking pretty decent so the upside looked high. My strategy was always to Free Hit GW29 so my strategy was decided upon which was not a bad one, maybe not optimal to some, but it was far from a bad decision. When to wild card is often very team dependant.

Its easy with say with hindsight that it was not good, because the outcome up to now has been pretty dire, although my rank has stayed the same at 400k and there are many podcasters/experts lower than that, so it is not as if I don't do my research and don't know my football You cannot script/foresee what happened today at Brentford before half time in the first game of Liverpool's easy double GW. I questioned going for Trent as part of wildcard in GW24, but not Nunez and Jota.

Please don't tell me that the skill content of this game is any greater than 50%. Some simple basics around double and blank game weeks, xgi, xgc etc. Trail of events and bad luck in the last 3 game weeks that I have to laugh at. Play the fixtures bought Gordon in GW23 home to Luton, off injured at half time and according to Eddie no chance of playing the next game. Turns out to play a full game. I play a wild card in GW24 to attack doubles in GW25. Bring in Trent, Jota, and Nunez for a great home fixture against Burnley and double gw. Trent off at half time in GW24 and out for the foreseeable. Jota nobbled after 30 minutes against Brentford and Nunez off at a half time as a "precaution" and both probably out for great second fixture home against Luton. The luck content in this game is massive as detailed by Jo Lepper's recent podcast that showed the "great and the good's" expected points for their team versus actual points. The ones at the top had huge favourable variances against the expected points and vica versa at the bottom. You can make good decisions, but you are then simply rolling the dice.

It's like investing. If you focus on every individual failure or win, you'll drive yourself mad. If you get more right than they get wrong, over time the skill balances out against the luck. That's why some people have great histories.

      It is what it is.

The thing is across a whole season, there is an element of skill/logic in doing well.

But I find that the swings in luck create the largest variances, whereas the ‘skill’ aspect when it works only creates small gains.
And when that happens continuously during the season it starts to affect your judgment and skill, which then just worsens your position.

I think the most important thing over everything is to get a good start, because if you don’t you can’t really catch-up without taking big risks, which then just emphasises more of the large negative variances in luck.

Well I classify that into what is foreseeable and expected, go by bookies odds for example.

Although it doesn’t really matter because of EO, Haaland not scoring tonight is just bad luck, clearly.

Walker getting an assist and 2 bonus is pure luck.

Why? He had 2 good crosses, one got turned in for a goal.. the bonus is given because the assist was given, but that doesn’t make either luck, it was a good cross

So you’re telling me, if whatever reason could only play one of Haaland and Walker, and you went for Walker that you’d been skillful to profit from that decision, albeit only marginally in this instance?

No, what I’m telling you is that variance happens in any given gameweek, but good decision making will result in better results in the long run. Start walker for 5 weeks and tell me luck matters.

Sure, if you bought Rodri or Mcalister, you were fortunate, but if you make those decisions every week, you will get crushed by the template (which typically reflects “predicted” results)

                  • 9 Years

I get that, but even if you’re say 100% template, you will still undoubtedly be left with a dilemma or decision to make in certain weeks which can make or break your whole season (because your other sources of points are template).

I’ll give you an example, earlier in the season I was an early adopter of Palmer, but I also had Mbeumo.
And naturally I had to bench one of them most weeks.

Chelsea home to Brentford, in form looking good.
                  I play Palmer bench Mbuemo.
Palmer blanks and Mbeumo gets goal, assist and max bonus.

Week later, Chelsea home to an inform Spurs, can’t recall who Brentford were playing but it was an easier fixture (and they’d just beaten Chelsea away).
Mbeumo blanks and Palmer hauls, goal and at least 1 assist IIRC.

In just 2 gameweeks that was a significant swing in points, around 30 which for me is purely down to bad luck.
They weren’t wrong decisions, just bad outcomes, and it’s proof that over even a relatively short period of time it can define your season.

                  1. Scapegoat Salah

                    I’ll give you more.

Last week I plan on advance and buy Reguilon and Doughty.

I play Trippier, Doughty and Trent.
All great fixtures and barring Trippier/Newcastle, inform (though Trippier scored week before).

So naturally I bench Reguilon, also bench Gabriel because the other players have better fixtures.

                    What happens?
Trent goes off injured, Newcastle concede twice and Sheffield randomly turn up away at Luton.
I’m left with Reguilon 12 points on bench plus Gabriel goal and assist, as well as Flekken (Areola in goal).

Yes Gabriel a risk to bench, certainly a clean sheet foreseeable but a goal as well. Come on, that’s horrendous luck - but add up the points swing it created, in just one week.

Good decisions by your logic, would then take weeks to recoup all of that back more often than not, especially when ‘good’ picks are often template anyway.

If the game was pick good fixtures and good players, it would be boring. Predicting outcomes will necessarily result in some variance, you just hold onto the examples where it hurts you and you over-emphasize them against those that go for you. It’s called bias.

I’ve benched more points than anyone this year, but it doesn’t mean I’ve been unlucky, it means that the risks I took or didn’t take failed to pay off.

Trust me, blaming the variance and calling lack of success bad luck does you no good. Stick to your pick and the variance will come back. If it doesn’t, then it wasn’t a good pick, was it?

Yeah absolutely, but who wants to play the game owning the obvious players, and by that logic, keep them the whole season because the variance will net off - would just be boring.

I’m basically telling you specific examples which hugely backfire, continuously.

The game is about timing, and owning the right players at the right times, the right players is largely skill yes, but the timing part is largely luck imo.

It is if you change it every week. Buy players for 4-6 week runs and play them. If you plan to bench just because a fixture is red, don’t be upset when you miss the points. The more you plan to avoid every bad fixture, you will get fewer returns from your good players unless everything goes exactly according to plan.

In the end, you have a choice, don’t be mad for the best result not being the obvious choice. It’s literally what makes the game fun.

The irony is the examples I’ve given specific to me and my season, isn’t that I haven’t owned the right players, it’s that I’ve benched or started them at the wrong times, which have created significant swings.

Imo, the bench is so worthless and if you get points from it it’s pure luck.
So by that notion if you own a player but bench them, and they do well you get sweet FA, which is the same for a manager who chooses to not buy them or overlook them completely.
Which is wrong imo, I don’t know what would leverage this, maybe benches you get half the points rounded down?
Or just no bench at all, and you only have one when you bench boost.

All in all I’ve been punished for giving myself options, which is just silly I think.

I’ve benched more than 10 points per week; carried a deep team this year, it’s helped at times, but then I’ve missed Palmers 18 and a bunch of other big scores along the way. Most good players would say to get their budget into their 11 and not play the bench/start game

Even with best XI, that’s where you’re kind of punished if you got Palmer for example early, because he was 5.0, and you’d be silly not to buy him at that price as you can barely get any cheaper.
But ultimately it gives you headaches/options further down the line.

West Ham completely capitulating last week after getting a 2-0 away win against the same side just a few months ago, which resulted in both Centre backs scoring and Saka hauling, is bad luck in my opinion.

But the swing in points that creates is absolutely huge, not far off 50 if you consider variance in owns Arsenal/West Ham assets or not.

And by the same token it’s worked in my favour too, few years ago with Kane and Son vs Southampton when most sold after blanking GW1, I didn’t, missed deadline and got about 50 points through pure unintended luck.

Same with Cash in GW2 this season, pure luck he scores a brace.

My bad luck this season has come with timing of owning certain players or when I’m stuck between who to bench between some players, I’ve nearly always come worse off.
Decisions that are so close on paper that create a massive swing can only be defined as luck.

Players scoring goals happens.. it’s not luck, it was the fact that he was playing as a winger for the first month of the season.

Yeah I’m just saying I benefited from that, but me personally I don’t think that was skill whatsoever.

The skill in this game is derived by correctly predicting the most logical outcomes, consistently.

I get you can explain why events happen, but doesn’t make them foreseeable to predict without hindsight.

Top 100-1k is more differentiated due to luck and variance

Past seasons I agree, which supports your sentiment.

Since COVID season, there’s so much randomness that create massive swings in good/bad luck.

Both centre backs scoring last week for Arsenal for example, I mean come on.

expected goals, assists, points etc. all are derived from looking to the past data and assuming that it is an indicator for the future, a mere guess on events that have not yet come to pass. In a sense, it has no difference than divination. All events happen as they happen. The only thing you can control in the FPL game are your own decisions before the deadline and then up until the next deadline. Games happen in between your decisions and there is nothing you can do about it. We should all know this. Given we all know, is there really 'luck' in this game? Am I 'unlucky' that Haaland blanked on a week that I Tc'd him, or was it a logical decision for me to Tc him before the events of that gameweek happened. If I label my decisions good, bad, lucky, unlucky based on the results of the game, I will be all over the place. But if I focus on my decision making process and try to improve on that, without focusing on the results of it, I might be at peace after every decision made regardless of the outcome.Would love to write an article about this topic in the future maybe can be featured on the site.

Maybe it's the hindsight talking but never was comfortable with TC Haaland this week. He missed a couple and easily could've had 2 goals and he can still haul midweek vs Brentford (were horrible againts Liverpool today) so seems like not that big of a blunder. Maybe it was the EO that got me scared and tempted me to it. Still can't say it was a mistake captaining one of the best forwards from one of the best teams in a double gameweek where both matches were at home. Credits to Chelsea as well I think they were solid defensively and good on the counter. Better passing and finishing could've had them winning today.

No need to be soothed. It did appeal and I tc'd him. Gave reasons why I did it. Being able to use different chips on the upcoming doubles was another one that i didn't mentioned. Just wanted to have my opinion out on the matter. It feels like you came here to tell people off for some reason I can't understand. Maybe I'm taking it the wrong way, if that's the case sorry about it.

One of the only good things about Jota going off injured is that he is 70% EO so everyone failed at the same time, sometimes EO prevents you from being unlucky because if you are unlucky everyone else is too.

Haaland had an xG of 1.71 today. This is a man who usually outperforms his xG. If you were told before the game he would have this xG you would've TC'd him without hesitation.
