We’re back. As the Olympic flame begins to flicker, the football season crunches through the gears to take up the pace. Today’s Community Shield is the official curtain raiser and offers up a Man City vs Chelsea clash that will surely whet the appetite for the feast to come.

The first Dugout Discussion post of the season is here, then, with our Chatroom also open for those who fancy some real-time exchanges.

The team news from Villa Park goes a lot like this…

Chelsea are without one of their new midfield signings, as Marko Marin continues to nurse a hamstring which threatens to derail his double Gameweek prospects. Without the option of Marin, Roberto Di Matteo looks to be going with a 4-3-3, which could similarly shift to pack the midfield with a 4-5-1. Significantly, Juan Mata starts along with Eden Hazard: the Spaniard looks to be playing on the right of compatriot Fernando Torres, with Hazard given the left flank role. Mikel holds a midfield start, with Frank Lampard and Ramires alongside him. John Terry skippers the side in a familiar back four which has Branislav Ivanovic in the right-back role and David Luiz given the nod over Gary Cahill who sits on the bench.

City are without both Gareth Barry and Micah Richards through injury, while reports of a back problem for Joe Hart are confirmed as Costel Pantilimon starts in goal. Ahead of him it looks like a familiar 4-4-2, although there is talk of Roberto Mancini lining up in the 3-5-2 that he’s used throughout the pre-season. Stefan Savic is given the nod alongside Vincent Kompany who recovers from a knock to start: Lescott is presumably being preserved for next weekend. Pablo Zabaleta and, interestingly, Aleksandar Kolarov both get starts, with Clichy benched. It could be we see Zabaleta employed as a defensive three, with Kolarov and James Milner used as wing-backs. David Silva is kept on the bench after his Euro 2012 campaign and, with Barry also absent, Nigel De Jong gets the nod alongside Yaya Toure. Carlos Tevez will be expected to provide the support for Sergio Aguero up front; Mario Balotelli is out of the equation through conjunctivitis, apparently.

Let’s hope the match is a sight for his sore eyes. Enjoy the game.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    so heres my plan...

    DDG, Fed
    Cole, Lescott, Clyne, Fabio, Demel
    Ramires, Bale, Noble, Michu, Pienaar
    Torres, Tevez, Graham

    4.5 in the bank

    Michu -> yaya
    clyne -> hangeland
    save 2m for torres->rooney

      Looks good, I have 12/15 the same. Don't need Michu if you have Graham. Also Ramires trades down easily after the DGW to whichever 6/6.5 is performing - perhaps N'Zogbia. I'm not convinced Fulham will be tight at the back though, I went for Colo. Newcastle don't have the greatest fixtures, but they're still a very settled unit and that should continue to grind out CS's.

      Do you expect Reading to be tight at the back, or just the best of the budget bunch? I have Green there instead. Admittedly haven't checked rotations yet, see DDG staying there virtually every week.

          I'm honestly not sure right now. Oscar is attacking mid that should fit in for Lamps but may not. Ramires and Lamps could start with Oscar coming in for one of the matches or Marin. It's all a bit up in the air.

    Okay, first time this season. Thoughts appreciated:

    Chesny – Cerny
    Walker – Clichy – Hangeland – Demel – Cuellar (might switch Clichy)
    Yaya – Hazard – Kagawa – Nolan – Pienaar
    Tevez – Graham – Torres

    Hmm, and just watched some ‘movies’ of Kagawa’s Ichinose http://static.neatorama.com/im.....er-day.jpg

    I can actually get a front line of
    Tevez Roon Torres to start with,
    and still have a decent backline of Lescott 4.5 4.5 4.5 4.0

    worth it??

      I've got this as it stands. It's a shame because I think there's good value in some of the lower priced strikers (Graham and Cisse look good) which frees up funds for better midfielders.

      I just can't cover Utd's first four fixtures without Rooney, I think Torres picks himself because of the DGW and then Man City look good to pump Southampton next weekend, and Tevez gives the best value compared to the likes of Silva and Aguero... looks really top heavy, but it's the best fit I can find at the moment.

          There's an additional 2 points just for playing. Even a transfer at 4 points is worth the risk. Plus with their cost it's easy to get rid of them. NEW in GW2 isn't that difficult either.

          The GW1 fixtures are fantastic as well, as PPSR says.

            He might end up being, over the ball, dangerous tackle, exactly the type of tackle the f.a. Tried hard to stamp out last year, Would make sense for them to make an example of him going into a new season, just my tuppence worth.

          Its a friendly so if anything he is banned from the next three Chelsea friendlies. FA might suspend him anyway, but that wont happen till Tuesday at the earliest.

      toon backline is santon, coloccini, saylor and either raylor or simpson. but i pray it's neither of the latter as they are both a bit crap. raylor is not that bad a footballer but he way too slow to play defence. simpson just has horrible positioning. i'm hoping against hope that we buy debuchy cos if so there will be no reason to play those twerps
