We’re back. As the Olympic flame begins to flicker, the football season crunches through the gears to take up the pace. Today’s Community Shield is the official curtain raiser and offers up a Man City vs Chelsea clash that will surely whet the appetite for the feast to come.

The first Dugout Discussion post of the season is here, then, with our Chatroom also open for those who fancy some real-time exchanges.

The team news from Villa Park goes a lot like this…

Chelsea are without one of their new midfield signings, as Marko Marin continues to nurse a hamstring which threatens to derail his double Gameweek prospects. Without the option of Marin, Roberto Di Matteo looks to be going with a 4-3-3, which could similarly shift to pack the midfield with a 4-5-1. Significantly, Juan Mata starts along with Eden Hazard: the Spaniard looks to be playing on the right of compatriot Fernando Torres, with Hazard given the left flank role. Mikel holds a midfield start, with Frank Lampard and Ramires alongside him. John Terry skippers the side in a familiar back four which has Branislav Ivanovic in the right-back role and David Luiz given the nod over Gary Cahill who sits on the bench.

City are without both Gareth Barry and Micah Richards through injury, while reports of a back problem for Joe Hart are confirmed as Costel Pantilimon starts in goal. Ahead of him it looks like a familiar 4-4-2, although there is talk of Roberto Mancini lining up in the 3-5-2 that he’s used throughout the pre-season. Stefan Savic is given the nod alongside Vincent Kompany who recovers from a knock to start: Lescott is presumably being preserved for next weekend. Pablo Zabaleta and, interestingly, Aleksandar Kolarov both get starts, with Clichy benched. It could be we see Zabaleta employed as a defensive three, with Kolarov and James Milner used as wing-backs. David Silva is kept on the bench after his Euro 2012 campaign and, with Barry also absent, Nigel De Jong gets the nod alongside Yaya Toure. Carlos Tevez will be expected to provide the support for Sergio Aguero up front; Mario Balotelli is out of the equation through conjunctivitis, apparently.

Let’s hope the match is a sight for his sore eyes. Enjoy the game.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Disgusted with that match. Sending off ruined it although it was a certain red. I was dying to see how City coped with a decent defense once they went behind and it all means nothing now 'cos playing against 10 means you can neither judge the 11 nor the 10. All we know is that 11 City is better than 10 Chelsea which I was already well aware of. Only thing I can take from it is that Lampard still got forward a bit early on despite City having a lot of possession at the time.

My thoughts on how today affects my FPL team.

1 - I will still have 2 Chelsea players for the DGW. Circumstance mean that the 2 have changed, I am opting for A.Cole and Torres (and the standard 2M in bank) and in doing so forgetting about the Chelsea midfield. Perhaps Terry as it allows easy switch to Vidic.

2 - I am not knee jerking on Tevez and Nasri despite fact they scored. For personal reasons they weren't in my team before the game and one game wont change my opinion (and yes I can exclude players for personal opinion towards them because it is my team). I will have to accept that whoever I have from City attacking points can come from anywhere from them.

3 - I have no bloody clue which City defender to have for the start.

4 - I have a 9M slot vacant in my mid, do I not use all of it and spread the wealth in my mid or get Cazorla, Valencia or Kagawa.

      I'm a big Spurs fan.

Sigurdsson will play most games, but will swap with VDV. We are going to buy a striker which will limit both players game time.

The question is, how much will Aguero outscore Tevez? 2.5 million's worth of points? I have my doubts. Any Aguero "explosion" will probably have Tevez assisting too...

Anyone goin with Ramires? Thinkin i might as well find my cheapest way into their midfield than spend big on mata/Lamps when i ain't sure they gonna perform. Him and Torres Only for me maybe. Then Ramires to Pienaar GW 2

I think they will. People are reading a little too much into this high back line hubbub imo. Friedel's a good shout unless we sign another GK. And if you're gonna take a 6.5 Tottenham defender early on, I'd have Walker.
