Dugout Discussion – Community Shield

We’re back. As the Olympic flame begins to flicker, the football season crunches through the gears to take up the pace. Today’s Community Shield is the official curtain raiser and offers up a Man City vs Chelsea clash that will surely whet the appetite for the feast to come.

The first Dugout Discussion post of the season is here, then, with our Chatroom also open for those who fancy some real-time exchanges.

The team news from Villa Park goes a lot like this…

Chelsea are without one of their new midfield signings, as Marko Marin continues to nurse a hamstring which threatens to derail his double Gameweek prospects. Without the option of Marin, Roberto Di Matteo looks to be going with a 4-3-3, which could similarly shift to pack the midfield with a 4-5-1. Significantly, Juan Mata starts along with Eden Hazard: the Spaniard looks to be playing on the right of compatriot Fernando Torres, with Hazard given the left flank role. Mikel holds a midfield start, with Frank Lampard and Ramires alongside him. John Terry skippers the side in a familiar back four which has Branislav Ivanovic in the right-back role and David Luiz given the nod over Gary Cahill who sits on the bench.

City are without both Gareth Barry and Micah Richards through injury, while reports of a back problem for Joe Hart are confirmed as Costel Pantilimon starts in goal. Ahead of him it looks like a familiar 4-4-2, although there is talk of Roberto Mancini lining up in the 3-5-2 that he’s used throughout the pre-season. Stefan Savic is given the nod alongside Vincent Kompany who recovers from a knock to start: Lescott is presumably being preserved for next weekend. Pablo Zabaleta and, interestingly, Aleksandar Kolarov both get starts, with Clichy benched. It could be we see Zabaleta employed as a defensive three, with Kolarov and James Milner used as wing-backs. David Silva is kept on the bench after his Euro 2012 campaign and, with Barry also absent, Nigel De Jong gets the nod alongside Yaya Toure. Carlos Tevez will be expected to provide the support for Sergio Aguero up front; Mario Balotelli is out of the equation through conjunctivitis, apparently.

Let’s hope the match is a sight for his sore eyes. Enjoy the game.

    CS 2012 notes

    - I thought Yaya may be a terrific option, but despite the goal, he was largely alongside De Jong for most of the match. Jury out.
    - Torres looked sharpER, but not great. Again, a goal and everything else is put to one side. Still not going anywhere near my team.
    - Nasri was getting forward much further than Yaya for .5 extra. Rotation v 38 game man, though.
    - Tevez cemented himself in our teams.
    - Picking a Chelsea mid is a mystery. I like the look of Ramires and one of Mata or Lampard.
    - Unsure on the defences - go uber cheap and get Lescott and Cole or just one and rotate 4.5-5s?

      -agree on Yaya but best option in the 7-8M range

      -Torres, good for the DGW, then surely everyone swapping him fro Rooney

      -Only city MF not going to be rotated is Yaya imo

      -Tevez was always in my team but had looked to get Aguro in due to many people thinking he was more nailed on. I think the price defference is worth the risk,

      -Ramires not a bad option, but i think there will be other mf's scoring more highly after a few weeks - don't know which yet so Ramires probably in my GW1 team.

      -Mata looked more central than Hazard and if i have one it will probably be Mata. Lamps got forward more than i expected. Probably worth a punt instead of Mata as .5M cheaper

      - Puting some faith in defs myself this year. Bit worried about Che ability to defend tho. Kolarove has me interested, but we all know what happened last year!

        I might keep Torres for g/w 2 after newcastles defensive shambles yesterday. Apparently is was their normal back 4 who played yesterday from what I heard so maybe some nice returns for nando that game.

      I pretty much agree with you, although I have had Torres from the start and mean to stick with him. I am doing Cole plus 5s and 4s so I can afford tevez-rooney-torres from the off.

    Is this team serious? Two Southampton defenders? Jones who is injured/sick at the moment and unlikely to play anyway. Giroud has yet to kick a ball for Arsenal. The Pog?! I think your 11 million should be used all over your squad, not just one midfielder. That said, maybe you'll have the last laugh (if you're not already, that is!)

      hooiveld scored a 8 for southampton last year (7 in the league) , and he also brought me in to meet the celtic team when i met him outside lol
      clyne was just one of the cheapest i could find and it turns out hes playing right midfeild in pre season.

      its 11m for a mid and i have decided to take the pog out, for god knows who though.
      16 mill for a striker and a mid.

      didnt know about jones. might get a cheaper option

      I see Friedel as good value, assuming Totty don't get Lloris or whoever and Dawson isn't nailed. I've had Brad & Fed since I started, with a slight look at DDG in the mean time. Not too sure about Cery though...
