While we’re always a little cynical when it comes to withdrawals prior to international friendlies, Alan Pardew clearly has plenty to ponder ahead of Newcastle’s Gameweek 1 opener against Spurs. Having watched his side lose 4-1 to Cardiff at the weekend, the Magpies boss is keen to rally his troops in time for Saturday evening’s home clash with Andre Villas-Boas’ side but this morning he revealed he has several first-team concerns on the horizon…

Up front, both Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse are struggling for fitness. The pair missed out against Cardiff, with Pardew handing Shola Ameobi the lone striker role in a 4-4-1-1, which saw Jonas Gutierrez play in “the hole” – a possible sign of things to come should the Senegal strikers fail to recover from their respective injuries.

Bearing in mind that Newcastle then travel to Greece to face Atromitos in the Europa League on Thursday August 25 before their Gameweek 2 visit to Chelsea only two days later, it’s fair to say that Pardew will likely be cautious with his team selection for fear of any long-term absence.

“Papiss has got a slight hamstring we think he will recover by Tuesday or Wednesday. Demba has a shin injury which he has carried for a week or so. So we took him out of the game on Tuesday.”

There are plenty of other concerns, aside from the two forwards. Pardew also conceded that Hatem Ben Arfa is all but out of the Spurs game due to a knee problem, while Yohan Cabaye’s lack of match fitness is a big worry. Ben Arfa’s absence looks set to boost the first-team chances of Sylvain Marveaux – the winger impressed in the recent 5-1 win over Hartlepool by bagging a brace – while Ryan Taylor’s versatility could be significant here; he has started in central midfield recently and could well fill in again.

Indeed, Taylor’s chances are increased by the news that Cheick Tiote is also a doubt after limping out of the Cardiff defeat with a calf problem. With skipper Fabricio Coloccini also battling to overcome a hamstring knock, Pardew is facing an anxious next few days as he prepares for the curtain to raise on the new campaign.

All this, of course, could be good news for Tottenham’s attacking assets in Gameweek 1. With the London outfit set to follow this trip with (WBA, NOR, rdg, QPR), plenty investment in Villas-Boas’ side is already expected. The idea of Gareth Bale, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Rafael Van der Vaart lining up against an under-strength Magpies will strengthen Fantasy faith as we look to nail down our squads prior to Saturday morning’s deadline.

Our full team news service will be restored very soon, collecting all the very latest and offering predicted lineups as the days tick by towards the kick-off.

For the Aguero vs Tevez debate...Aguero should be on pens and DFK until Balo returns.

Tevez took a direct free yesterday, then Milner. I dont think Aguero will be on frees. Also when Silva comes back I think he'll be on them, sharing corners with Nasri

Yep, both very similar and from the same spot. Id say Silva will take frees on the right side of the pitch (left foot) and Tevez or Milner will share on the right

ok bit of a long/different post but after some opinions

always use my WC late on but was hit by a low team value last season so tempted to use it early

before gwk6 looks good as that is when chelsea and spurs fixtures take a turn for the worse

i would treble on chelseas defence and west hams defence so play the 3 chelsea boys every week apart from gwk3 and then id treble on west ham at home to fulham

    cech, jaaskelainen
    terry, cole, zabaleta, mccartney, demel

i would then treble on spurs attack and focus on teams with nice early fixtures, something like

    bale, siggy, kalankilic, maloney, gardner
aguero, bent, defoe (with 0.5 to get rooney in gwk2)

also with this, gwk6 west ham have QPR away and gwk7 chelsea have norwich at home so there is the option to delay WC until 2nd international break if its going well

    thoughts?

Tosemeister, I have the utmost respect for you so what ever you decide it will most def work in the long run.

Me - I'm going ubercheap at the back as that's all I know and that's what kind of worked for me in the past(maybe that's why I will never break the top 1k?)

I'm also one of those that don't "plan" to use the WC.(Still living in hope that one year I will be off to a flyer in week 1) If it has to happen early on though then I'm open to it.

i tend to use it early, but i don't like planning it for a specific week, i would more likely use it when multiple changes are needed and I don't think I can make back the 8 or 12 points in hits

    - Get Valencia from the start and do Lampard to Bale GW 2 or get Bale and do Lampard to Valencia/Kagawa GW 2?
    - Safe to say Steven Taylor will start for Newcastle come GW 3?
    - Pick A or B to start the season with.

    A) Bale + Tevez
    B) Aguero + McClean (will downgrade to Tevez later if needed)

In light of the confusion over starting places in the City back 4/5 continuing from last season, anyone considering giving it a miss? Hart and Lescott doubts, full-backs always rotated, Kompany probably not worth the money.

Could always bring one in for one of the Chelsea defenders in GW3 if it settles down and they're a must-have!

Define 'fine'? I'm sure he's not injured, but he's only had one pre-season game, whereas Savic/Toure have had the whole pre-season. There's a chance Mancini will ease him back into action like he mentioned he would do with Balotelli and Silva.

Yeah, I'm giving them a miss. Kompany is too expensive for my taste and all the rest are too expensive given that they may only share in half of City's clean sheet points.

Later in the season, when I have more money and we have a clearer picture, I'll probably come crawling back to them.

Don't like Kaboul - not 100% nailed on and, unless you're planning on playing 4 at the back, 14.5m is too much to spend on 3 players fighting for one spot in your team.

The basic distribution of cash is good (although I prefer Bale to Kagawa, Zog/McClean/Pienaar to Michu/Taarabt).
