Wollongong is a nice place to visit but I prefer Shell Harbour and Kiama. There is a big blow-hole at Kiama and people fall into it all the time!

Lukaku and Fernandes are worth a punt, former is capable of getting two goals in a match or a G and A, Fernandes would just need an assist and a clean sheet or just a goal to do better. Don't think Ronaldo would get more than one goal, maybe in the Georgia match.

They were abject as was the game. To see generational talent wasted by a one dimensional hack like Southgate is depressing in the extreme.

Are people now understanding how incompetent Southgate is as England manager.

He turned a Boro team that were UEFA Cup finalists into relegation fodder shortly after being appointed as our manager.

He is disaster area and is about to torpedo yet another English attempt at international football success.

This, despite having one of the best group of players at his disposal thay any other country would be proud of.

    GET LOST SOUTHGATE

Its been the same for years yet people defend him. Generational talent got them to a semi and a final ; the team did it inspite of Southgate not because of him. He’s a nice chap, brought the squad together but he’s a clueless muppet when it comes to tactics. When your CV reads “got Middlesborough relegated” you have to wonder who the hell thought this could end differently.

He’s done things others have failed at, such as building proper team spirit and making us harder to beat at times.

People go on and on about Euro 96, but we struggled at times there, and Southgate went one better in our home Euros, beat Germany and made the final.

He’s tactically poor but he has gone some things right IMO.

He's failed at all major competitions to date.
Remember the players currently at his disposal. We would be World Champions if either Klopp or Wenger were in charge.
The players look totally dispirited and confused with his management

A lot of the comments are harsh. Southgate first came in and brought a squad together, with players he knew from youth, and turned them into an effective squad.

I agree that right now he is struggling to transition to a new squad. That doesnt mean he was always poor, even Wenger and Klopp have struggled with squad transitions.

Half a draft that I'm tinkering with. I really want to punt on Oyarzabal too - guess there's a pretty good chance Morata gets a rest now? Same for Goncalo Ramos if Portugal beat Turkey. Otherwise I'll probably stick to teams that need the points - Eriksen, maybe Szoboszlai/Bellingham.

If Pep was the Manager of England they would win the Euro's without a shadow of doubt

    Agree?

    Southgate is beyond clueless

How do you not play attacking football with so much firepower

Kane - Top scorer in Europe last season
Bellingham - Best midfielder in the world / CL winner
Foden- Premier league player of the year
Saka Rice- Stellar season in pl and nearly won it

Not giving any minutes off the bench to two of the most creative players with the highest number of assists among English midfielders last season, Palmer and Gordon, is completely mental Playing TAA in midfield doesn't help either.

Why wouldn't he ? You need to come up with a better argument than that mate

We are not talking about a complete dud here. Its pep the best manager in the world. England got the best players in attack hands down. Pep will get a fine tune out of them and make them gel in a system and develop chemistry like non other

No other team in current euros got that much quality and depth.

Pep has repeatedly bought squads. He is good at buying squads. You cannot buy squads for a national team.

He would not be a good national coach for any nation as he does not have the right skillset. Its similar to playing Foden at LW. Wrong man for the wrong job

For years? He was a kid the majority of the time and played as much as would be expected for a kid in team competing at top of the league. He'd have got more game time this season but probably not a much as he'd have wanted.

Get off the weed lad. Pep is absolutely winning the Euro's with that England squad. There is no two ways about it

Best manager in the world with the best team is a win win. This is not rocket science.
Pep is a genius and you haven't got a clue to undermine his greatness.

Palmer example is the best you can come with? Palmer went to get playing time. All city mids are prone to rotation.Cant you fathom this?

Pep performs amazingly well in the league and suffers from overthinking in cups.

Pep is known for being able to embed his highly-simple football philosophy into players in a very short time after all - 2 weeks with a different group every couple of months should be more than enough time for the squad to learn it thoroughly

    Team for Slovenia should be:

    Pickford
    Walker, Stones, Guehi, Saka
    Mainoo, Rice
    Palmer, Bellingham, Gordon
    Kane

Needs must for Saka at full back. Know he hasn't played there for years, but best option we have as a left footed player in that role.

Proper CM in there to replace Trent.

Feel like Foden and Palmer would get in each others way and Palmer's stock has gone up by not playing. He's in.

    Gordon also deserves a go.

I would have started the tournament with

      Pickford
      Stones Gomez Dunk Guehi
      Bellingham Rice Foden
      Saka Kane Gordon

I didn't like that England took Shaw (unfit) instead of Colwill and that there was no room for Branthwaite. Trippier is past it and that was obvious when you look at how poorly he played in the second half of the PL season.

Ultimately, the team needs balance and at the moment it is unbalanced with Walker getting in the way of TAA. TAA getting in the way of Saka. Trippier doesn't help Foden as Trippier wants to cut inside onto his right foot whereas Foden wants someone on his outside. Rice is left having to fight in the midfield on his own and then pundits are surprised when England get overrun in midfield.

I heard Shearer on commentary complaining about Stones not moving up into midfield like he does at City. England are playing Walker and Trippier to get forward, not Stones. Does Shearer want England to play suicide football with only Guehi left back?

      1. Hairy Potter
        • 10 Years
        1 year, 6 months ago

I think Shearer was just suggesting that Stones step forward so that Rice and Trent/Gallagher pushed up to fill the hole between midfield and attack. Having six players playing deep meant that the front players were isolated and it was easy to play through the initial press (as inconsistent as it was).

      2. x.jim.x

People would rather put out mad formations like this than just bench Foden. How many stinkers does he need to drop before you realise he isn’t that guy

      3. theplayer
        • 12 Years
        1 year, 6 months ago

You talk about balance then pick a team with 4 centre backs in defence and Rice would still be battling the midfield on his own as Foden and Bellingham both want to be the number 10.

    3. Hairy Potter
      • 10 Years

Personally I think a game plan, on and off the ball, is more important than the individual personnel. England in the last few games reminded me of ETH's Man Utd; inconsistent pressing, big gaps in midfield and relying on individual moments to get goals.

26th Schick (TUR) Fernandes (GEO) Cancelo (GEO) De Bruyne (UKR)

--- I am considering selling Kramaric and Williams for 2 different players playing on 23rd/24th. One should be from ESP of course, but I worry about some of them being rested. Same worry about Theo Hernandez due to fitness.

obvious saka is burned out. and im not talking about starting. he's better than any of the subs that came on. (for me he was the best player I saw play last season). if its not working give him 20 mins. whats funny is it took 50 odd minutes in the first game for gareth to realise trent experiment not working...it then took 50 odd mins in the second game to realise the trent experiment not working . what does that tell you about him?

Saka is the least of our worries in that front 3, I think he’s having his minutes managed.

All we need to do is drop Foden for Gordon and Trent for Gallagher/Wharton, at least until Shaw is fit.

It’s a simple fix that the world and his wife can see, but Gareth’s letting his ego get in the way of success.

But how stupid is that Gordon, who fits this team much better that Foden also has 0 minutes played

Because Palmer has better players in front of him. He’s this year’s Grealish where people will beg for him to play only for it to not make a difference in the end because the team is set up to fail.

I thought he’d get on before the likes of Eze and Bowen tbf.

as a slide rule passer ive not seen anyone better than palmer. Bellingham better all rounder, yes. but palmer on for Bellingham for the last 15 shouldnt be seen as sacrilige by southgate.

Palmer was playing in a pretty shambolic Chelsea team and giving stellar performances week in week out in spite of that. seems tailor made to play for England!

But he occupies neither position that we have issue with so it’s a moot point. It’s like moaning that Konsa hasn’t gotten minutes

it really isnt . and yioualso seem to think im suggesting palmer starts which Im not. bellingham was boll*** last night after the hour as most england players were and he doesnt get a sniff. you cant say that isnt strange.

Bellingham's one of the best players in the team, if not the whole tournament. Southgate not being able to get a proper tune out of him is just another failure, and sticking Cole Palmer (who's played 5 mins for England) on instead is not the solution.

Well rather than bringing Gallagher on for Trent he should move Bellingham to Trent's #No8 spot and then bring on Palmer in the #10 (taking Trent off)

In this plan, you're playing Rice (an 8) as a 6 and Bellingham (a 10) as an 8.

Two of our best players (one being genuinely world class) who have turned up for England in the past, to accommodate someone who has barely played? I rate Palmer, but all this jiggery-pokery to just get names onto the pitch is madness.

Play a 6 like Wharton instead of Trent and a winger instead of Foden and we win games, it's really as simple as that.

why cant it be the solution? who cares how many mins they've played .,,this is tournament football think of the amount of players of over the decades that have just hit the ground running when ,managers took a chance on them. Bellingham has played non stop for 9 months, he's going to be tired cant actually blame Southgate for that. what you can blame him for his not managing his minutes . he has had one amazing 45mins in 180 . and this whole 'well this player is too similar to this player' is stuff only England seems to think about. i really dont understand it.

Bellingham doesn't look tired - he's had a bad game where nobody else except Guehi showed up. We're playing so deep that he can't get up the pitch and shine where he does best. The team isn't failing because of Bellingham.

Not understanding that picking 3 players who occupy the same space on the pitch causes the team to be unbalanced is exactly why we ended up with a performance like that. We have absolutely no width because the prat is insisting on playing 2 10s at the same time behind Kane whose whole game is dropping back.

Taking a punt on Grimaldo myself. News pending, of course. I quite like how Spain attack down that side of the pitch.

Definitely wait for news on whether or not Spain will rotate. I'd fancy him to start if they do.

One maybe. I don't want to go overboard on teams that have already qualified and end up with more than 3 non-starters in my squad

Will get to see lineups, I'll be putting 3 in on LL for shiz. Expecting Grimaldo to get a game over Cucu so he will be first in for sure if so.

Hehe most of the tournament is like that for me; I hardly watch any international football outside of Euros/WC. Didn't even see the France game so capping the Baum completely sight-unseen 😀
