FPL Challenge

Like an academy product finding their feet in a debut season, it’s fair to say Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers were not quite sure what to make of FPL Challenge when it arrived ‘off the bench’ towards the end of 2023/24.

The game nonetheless managed to pique decent interest and reach over one million players in its initial trial period.

It did away with restrictions like pricing and centred on specific weekly variations to the usual FPL rule set (such as double points for players from certain clubs), as well as employing a ‘rolling deadline’ approach, during which you could keep changing players right up till kick-off of each fixture.

Now, however, it looks like the game makers at the Premier League have taken on board plenty of learnings, had a full pre-season in training and returned with something very different that looks like it could be a ‘real player’ for the 2024/25 campaign!

The full story is unveiled on the FPL site, along with reaction from our very own Sam Bonfield, but let’s have a look at some of the main developments.

The Main Events… Over 5 Gameweeks

One major new format change is the ability to compete in and win ‘events’, essentially a group of collectively themed Gameweeks in which your points add up as you compete for a trophy over a shorter timeframe than the full season game.

To kick things off, they’ve given the example of a five-a-side event, where the ‘theme’ is that you can only pick five players for each Gameweek.

In each of the four weeks, there are also other restrictions to consider.

FFS Verdict: This seems like a smart way to maintain engagement for short periods of time and allow both existing Fantasy managers and new arrivals, who may get distracted, to be able to drop in and out but still be able to enjoy the game.

Fantasy Challenge 2024

Playing The (Season) Long Game

Purists will be relieved to understand that, alongside the shorter ‘event’ challenges, you will also be able to compete in a more familiar manner with season-long mini-leagues that aggregate the points as you go.

It appears these will operate in the same way as current FPL mini-leagues, allowing you to join global competitions or compete against a closer group of friends.

FFS Verdict: This is a welcome addition, but pretty much what the hardcore player would expect.

Fantasy Challenge 2024

Playing for the Badge

One addition that feels like a nod to the world of video games is the addition of rank badges, which effectively serve as a rating of performance in each event as well as a virtual trophy cabinet for achievements.

Depending on how well you’ve performed (and what percentile of players you’re in), you’ll get a different award that’s then attached to your FPL Challenge profile. Everyone who takes part will get the ‘bronze’ (a bit like school sports day participation award) but only the more hardcore (or very lucky) managers will have the ‘elite’, ‘world class’ or ‘legend’ crest!

And that’s not the end of it. Finish multiple challenges at a specific level and you’ll also add stars to your rank for even more exclusive bragging rights. A bit like the stars for winning international tournaments!

FFS Verdict: Another good addition, especially for fans of EAFC – nice to have another metric to track the high points as opposed to just a league position.

Fantasy Challenge 2024

Points Make Prizes!

If virtual badges of honour were not enough incentive, the promise of actual real-world prizes could tip a few more managers into the Challenge world.

In the earlier days of FPL, the prize level had been the subject of some gentle sarcasm (‘oh great, a stressball!’) but in recent seasons, this has improved dramatically to include 7-night holidays, match tickets, PL shirts, headphones, watches, laptops, EAFC games and exclusive FPL merch.

Whilst the details were relatively sparse in the announcement, the promise to at least match this level of prizes seems to suggest there’ll be a lot more chances to win something decent.

FFS Verdict: Let’s face it, very few of us are really playing this game for the chance to win a prize, but a little extra incentive really can’t hurt and an FPL rucksack does sound pretty cool!

There’s No Substitute

One final technical change to the game which will differentiate further from FPL (and deny some of the cheeky workarounds that certain managers employed) is the removal of the bench AND the vice captaincy elements from the game entirely. Players can now only pick a maximum of 11 starting players – or indeed far less during the starting five-a-side Gameweek event).

FFS Verdict: Whilst we obviously do enjoy a loophole to exploit in any Fantasy game, I think we probably have to say ‘it’s a fair cop gov’ on this one and accept it’s in the best interests of a level playing field.

Final Score

Of course the proof of any game comes in the actual playing but, much like Sam, we welcome pretty much everything we’ve heard here and are certainly going to be adding FPL Challenge to our starting line-up for the new season – alongside newcomer Fantasy EFL, UEFA Champions League Fantasy, and of course FPL itself.

We’ll also be providing all Scout readers, subscribers and of course FFS Premium Members with the very best analysis, data, tips, tools and team reveals we possibly can.

Faes and Harwood-Bellis seem the most nailed, though the latter comes the risk of hurting team value if everyone starts selling him

What do you think of the two drafts below? 1st draft Livramento could become Andersen or Myko.

    1.
    Sanchez
    Robertson / Livramneto / Maatsen
    Salah / Gordon / Foden / Rogers / Palmer
    Isak / Havertz

    Fabianski | Robinson | Muniz | Mosquera

    ---------------------------------------------
    2.
    Flekken
    Gvardiol / Munoz / Mykolenko
    Salah / Gordon / Foden / Eze / Palmer
    Isak / Havertz

    Valdimarsson | Barco | Faes | Cannon

    Thanks all

Thanks - I can't find much on there but the search function doesn't seem to be very good. I think I'll end up with Sanchez anyway but Areola is on the shortlist and Fabianski no 2 would be useful. Not interested in Flekken due to the fixtures.

think this is the best mix of certainty and upside i'm going to come up with:

    Henderson (4.0)
    Trent, Gvardiol, Mykolenko (Robinson, Faes)
    Salah, Palmer, Foden, Gordon, Eze
    Isak, Pedro (4.5)

no Arsenal the only glaring issue imo, but could do Trent/Gordon -> Saliba/Odegaard when the fixtures turn.

First draft which looks decent. What do you think:

    Pope Turner
    Gvardiol Konsa VdV Faes Davis
    Salah Palmer Eze Gordon Winks
    Isak Watkins Havertz

Obviously feels bad without City attack, but just can't have them all

Been a while, hi everyone.. some insight please if you will?

    Option 1:
    Becker & Pickford
    Foden / Watkins / Gordon

    Option 2:
    Flekken & Valdi
    Salah / Isak / Rashford

Currently on option 1, but its killing me not having Salah.

    Can someone clarify for me?

So FPL challenge now doesn’t have 11 players each week, but rather this can change e.g., for the first 4 game weeks (“events”) you only pick 5 players.

Or are “events” alongside the 11-aside FPL challenge?

Problem with Fulham is the loss of Palinha, and a lesser extent Tosin. It will impact the whole team, so I am cautious still.

Make a watchlist soon as the draft room is ready. Forwards and mids the priority. Leave keepers until the very last 2 IMO.

Anybody going for 5 defenders who can rotate in the £4.5m-£5m bracket? Just play the fixtures each week, and not be forced into any early transfers. I am going this way.

    1. luk46
      • 7 Years
      1 year, 4 months ago

don’t like rotating between 4.5m too much, will most likely go with 2x 6m and 1x 5m and use a 4.5m as the rotating option

        • Fantasy Football Scout Member

Yes, the issue is that CS odds for most 4.5 players simply aren't good and their attacking threat is limited. However, I am not sure if most 5.0 defenders are worth the .5 million which may be needed elsewhere.

        1. luk46
          • 7 Years

Maatsen or Munoz are worth it imo, there are some potential options at 4.5m like Robinson, Dunk or Livramento who can work well if you play them at the right time, but rotating is always a bit of an issue

I just wonder if Maatson has too much competition at left back in Digne/Moreno to be nailed to play at £5m.
I don’t know enough about Munoz he’s one I need to research regarding attacking potential

I think 5 is too much. Gvardiol + 4 rotating ones or Gvardiol + Saliba and 3 rotating ones more likely. TAA is one possibility, but Bradley at 5.0 with those fixtures could be a steal if he starts regularly. 4.0 is category I will totally avoid. They are TV risks and I prefer players who are likely to gain TV.

Yes I find that 4.0 defenders are best avoided at start until more data available. With the ability to hold 5 transfers, I am thinking how can I build a bench that covers for injuries/players not starting early season. Be great to be able to hold transfers early on hence I like the idea of 5 fully playable defenders but also keeping budget for a half decent 8th attacker for the bench.

The main issue for me is Haaland and gw2 Captaincy. It would be fun to be able to save transfers from beginning, but before gw3 Haaland to Watkins and Salah, Palmer or Foden in looks worth it. However, after 1st WC there is hopefully better time to save transfers.

In tougher (and away) games Arsenal was happy to win 0-1. Haaland wasn't looking dangerous in that goalless draw. Having Saliba from the start may help to play WC later.

0.5 left to spend in this Salah & Haaland draft.

    Any ideas?

    Muric
    Gvardiol // Robertson // Munoz // Maatsen
    Salah // MGW // Eze
    Haaland // Isak // Muniz

    4.0 // Rogers // Winks // Harwood B

not bad to have spare or Munoz > 4.5m since you somewhat rely on Rogers to start

not sure if I would have 2x 5m and 1x 4.5m def if you’re mostly going 343 but go for it if you like

Today's draft. 5 penalty takers. Defence rotates really well.

    Sanchez | 4.0
Gvardiol | Saliba | Pedro Porro | Burn | Konsa
    Salah (C) | Palmer | B. Fernandes | Eze | Gordon
    Wood | Isak (v) | 4.5

Could get Foden in but his first fixture is not great and he may be feeling the fatigue of euros.
Part of me wants to make a draft with Haaland, Palmer & Salah with enablers.

Wood surely starts? For the rest strong team. Although missing an Arsenal and City attack cover. You could also save 0.5 by swapping a 4.5 defender for a 4.0 (Faes, Barco).

I think Wood surely starts, ended last season strongly, doing OK in pre-season.

I like the idea. Can downgrade to Faes to cover GW5. He has Everton (H).

Figuring out the defence rotation but this works. Many will say why double up on Forest but Wood and Hudson-Odoi are having good pre-seasons and aren't tired. They also provide incredible value and have nice fixtures.

        Sanchez | 4.0
        Henry | Burn | Konsa | Robinson | Faes
        Hudson-Odoi | Salah (C) | Palmer | Eze | 4.5
        Haaland | Isak (v) | Wood

I’d be very grateful for some feedback on this please.

    Flekken/4.0
    Trent/gvardiol/myolenko/andersen
    Salah/palmer/gordon/MGW/rogers
    Watkins/isak/muniz

    Thanks all in advance 🙂

Looks good imo. The only issue is that you have no City and Arsenal attack cover. These are the most scoring teams in the League.

Premier League clubs spent £3 billion in 2023 on transfers.

In 2024 they've spent about £350m with many clubs having to sell players in order to buy.

Man United are the biggest spenders this summer and should make improvements as other teams get weaker from lack of transfers.

Overall, the EPL brand will get weaker just as Real Madrid announced 1 billion in revenue.

United have spent a lot of money without improving their team, by the end of the window business will pick up & other teams would have strengthened.

Only an ABU could argue that replacing Martial with Zirkzee and Varane with Yoro isn't an improvement

This is incorrect, Zirkzee has been brought in to compete with Hoijlund because Hoijlund was a bit of a flop, no upgrade there, just seems like rolling the dice and hoping this one works, his scoring record says it more than likely won’t.

Yoro has come in to replace Varane, certainly no upgrade there & no one here has seen enough of him that’s not YouTube best bits to argue the point.

Pure coping mechanism to say he’s replacing a player who hasn’t played for 2 years but if that makes you feel better, I’m not here to argue with you about it.

That last part was re Martial.

You’ve only seen Yoro on YouTube, played with him on FIFA or looked at his stats without any context of the strength of the league to give you that opinion.

I mean Zirkzee is literally taking Martial's place in the squad as the backup striker. You could bring Weghorst back and it would be an improvement.

Yoro is also an improvement over Varane in the sense that he'll actually be able to string 2 games together without breaking.

Seeing as I still can’t decide on a fourth premium attacker (between Saka, Watkins and Núñez), how is this defence heavy draft?

    Sánchez // Bentley
Gabriel Walker Burn // Konsa Faes
Salah Gordon Eze Nkunku // Winks
    Haaland Isak Pedro

    Possible changes:
    A. Walker, Winks, Pedro ➡️ Van de Ven, Bailey, 4.5 FW
    B. Gabriel, Walker, Eze ➡️ Van de Ven, Barco, Saka
    C. Gabriel, Walker, Eze, Pedro ➡️ Van de Ven, Barco, Bailey, Watkins
    D. Gabriel, Walker, Pedro ➡️ Van de Ven, Andersen, Núñez

    Good evening all!!

What do we think to the fairly balanced team??

    Forest Keeper
    Saliba Gvardiol Mykolenko
    Salah Palmer Foden Gordon CHO
    Havertz Isak
    Subs 4.0 Anderson 4.5 4.0

    Covers most bases I think!!

    Any advice welcomed!!

You are missing the elephant in the room of bases which is Haaland captain against Ipswich who cant defend in week 2

Watched them 2 seasons ago home and away against Barnsley. They have been defensively decent over the last 2 seasons. Think they have lost 9 matches in the leagues in the last two seasons.

Had another look at a draft and this seems the most sensible approach

    Haaland in for -4 week 2 covers all bases ( Salah + Havertz > Haaland + 5.5 mid ( Andreas / CHO)

    Pope
    White Gvardiol Porro
    Gordon Salah Odegaard Nkunku
    Isak Watkins Havertz

    4mil Barco Taylor Winks

Actually covers all bases. 3 attacking fullbacks, City and Liverpool covered for the good fixtures. Not much missing there i feel.

There is no money in the bank

I think those players bar Haaland will be undercooked for week 1

All of Saka, Palmer and Foden are currently on Holidays while the majority of other players have been back for 2 weeks

I like all 3 but i think can wait until weeks 3 / 4 / 5 to move them in.

The difference is that Villa dont have anyone but Watkins

City can and will play Grealish Doku KDB Nunes Silva

Chelsea will play Palmer but he can wait as those first fixtures arent great for the price

I can see Arsenal playing Jesus RW week 1 and Saka off the bench

    Think I’ve settled on a front 7 of….

    Salah, Eze, Gordon, CHO
    Haaland, Havertz, Isak

Can’t have them all but I think those 7 is as good as I can get it while having both Salah & Haaland.

I’d like to turn CHO into Harvey Barnes but I’m .5 short.
