Now a stone lighter after shedding his golf course weight, Carlos Tevez has once again emerged as a key player for Manchester City and Fantasy managers alike. The Argentine, who spent much of last season in exile after a spat with manager Roberto Mancini, was the star of last Sunday’s Community Shield victory over Chelsea, scoring a superb effort and overshadowing his compatriot, Sergio Aguero. But can he continue that form and keep the more expensive Aguero out of our Fantasy lineups?

One of the biggest attractions is the price difference between the pair, particularly in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, where Aguero has been priced at 11.5m in compared to Tevez’s 9m price tag. However, the difference in the Sky game is less marked with Tevez priced at 9.4m compared to Aguero’s 9.9m.

Another attraction is the post Community Shield comments from Roberto Mancini about Tevez being “a very important player” for City. With the side’s penalty taking, maverick striker Mario Balotelli still lacking match fitness and Edin Dzeko still out of favour as a starting striker, starts seem assured for Tevez for Man City’s opening games at least. But with Balotelli likely to be used sparingly during August, Aguero is set to retain penalty taking duties, arguably adding further weight to his hefty price tag.

Mark says…
I’ve been hesitant to consider Tevez over Aguero, for the simple reason that it seems inevitable that Roberto Mancini will look to give Mario Balotelli pitch time. My other concern is Mancini’s formation. The 3-4-1-2 looks to be a winning formula right now but the City boss is already indicating that he’ll abandon it once the real business gets underway. Even if it remains, I’m not sure how he builds both David Silva and Samir Nasri into his lineup, whilst keeping two strikers. I’m pretty sure they’ll be times when he’ll push Silva or Toure forward and abandon the idea of a pairing up front. For me, Aguero looks the most secure, regardless of the tactical scenario.

In the short-term, however, I have to admit I’m enormously tempted by the slimline Tevez. His goal and performance on Sunday was a clear indication of form and confidence and it seems nailed on that he’ll line up against Southampton. There’s every chance he could again steal the thunder from Aguero in that game and that 2.5 FPL difference can be invested to some effect elsewhere in our lineups. Will I be 100% that Tevez will take the field in a few Gameweek’s time? That’s the issue. For me, Aguero is a fire and forget option, by going with Tevez, it’s a question of cashing in on the short-term benefits and managing your way out of the situation later. After Sunday’s showing and the noise from the City camp, I might just be willing to take that on.

Andy says…
When I look at comparing two figures like Carlos Tevez and Sergio Aguero there is one thing that is always at the forefront of my mind – the Fantasy captaincy. The armband is the biggest duty for Fantasy Managers on any given Gameweek and, if I think I’m going to be spreading it about the Etihad stadium with regularity, I’ll make sure to pick the player that I think is not only most consistent and most likely to start games. That man, for me, without a shadow of a doubt, is Sergio Aguero.

However, in the first couple of months of the new season I really don’t see too many of Roberto Mancini’s men pushing the issue when it comes to captaincy. Given that inference I have to hark to the other dominant factor: price. While I think Aguero is more assured of pitch time, it doesn’t even begin to make up for the extra 2.5 in your pocket by opting for Tevez. As a player I prefer Aguero – exponentially so – but for the first couple of months of the season I’ll be managing with my head and leaving my heart at the door. Tevez will be in my team.

Paul Says…
It’s impossible to say over the long-term but, right now, he certainly looks to be. Tevez’s attitude has been praised by both Roberto Mancini and David Platt and the City boss has already stated he expects him to be an important player in the season to come – a sure sign of how he plans to utilise him. Aguero’s phenomenal debut season was, in part, helped by a number of factors –Tevez’s determination to force a move away from the Etihad and subsequent strop in the Allianz Arena, Mario Balotelli’s indiscipline and Edin Dzeko’s loss of form all meant that last year’s summer signing was too crucial to be left out at any point. Now that Tevez is 100% both physically and mentally, Mancini may well feel he can afford to slightly restrict Aguero’s game time when Mario Balotelli is fully-fit.

Personally, I feel that Tevez and Aguero could be handed roughly the same number of starts, with one or the other dropping out for Balotelli on occasion, while Edin Dzeko is mostly reduced to the role of impact sub. Bearing in mind this was a player who was priced at 12.0 at the start of last season, I reckon Tevez looks exceptional value at the moment for 9.0 and that 2.5 saving over Aguero has certainly won me over for just now.

UGH!!!!,,,,,Told myself at the end of last season to start this year with prooved NAILED ON starters with fexibility to change in the early weeks and not take too many punts.

    In my squad as it currently stands are;

    DDG
    Zabaleta
    Kagawa
    Tevez

This list does not include my 4.0 midfielders.

There goes that plan out the window!

Sat here with the same thoughts Canadian. Was jut thinking ' in two weeks when i have to use my wildcard bet i wish i could go back and slap myself".

      Reasoned thoughts-
      Lamp and Mata over Hazard
Get a Man city defender who will play all season.
Leave DDG. two rotating cheapies have served me well in the past
      Leave Liverpool alone
      Get RVP wherever he goes
      Kagawa looks good but wait.
Why i am i getting michu over all the other 6.5s who have played prem before?

    Mindless ramblings #2

    Spurs defence - looks miserable.
    - New manager who's system made a normally solid Chelsea defence consistently leak goals last season.
    - Their best defender Ledley King has retired, to be replaced by an untried Vertongen.
    - No anchormen in midfield with Parker and Huddlestone injured.
    - Their best ball retainer Modric has one foot out the door.
    - Friedel must be hitting 60 by now.

Aston Villa - probably the least selected players in game.
Darrent Bent - quality!! Lovely opening fixtures in a more attack minded Villa. Has penalties and could make a mockery of his £8.5m price if things work out with Lambert.
N'Zogbia - Often played OOP last season. Often looking like he couldn't give a sh!t last season. Will likely need to impress the new manager who could well play him in the Hoolahan role and make him a bargain at £6.5m
Same thing for Stephen Ireland @ only £5.5m. Still a bit too injury prone for my liking.
Clark & Lichaj £4.5m. It's an absolute lottery how well the rebuilt Villa defense will do.. but their prices could be tempting.

The forgotten mids (no RMT love)
    - Hoilett £6.5m. Quality player classified as a forward last season. QPR are really strong at home so it's great from a FPL perspective to be able to better predict when his points will come, easier to bench for harder away matches.
    - Dembele £6m. Just like Hoilett he's been reclassified as a mid. Quality player, his team get most their points at home. Lovely jubbly.
    Downing £6.5m. Well he's... no I can't do it, he's crap.
Lallana £6m. One of Southampon's best players last season, gets forward a lot but unfortunately prone to substitution 15 or 20 minutes from the end.
Brunt £6m. Always a good consisted FPL shout. Has set pieces and probably penalties. ONly worry is his start of season fitness.

      Interesting analysis.....

Agree Villa looks tasty......outside of Bent, i am afraind of the Lambert rotation policy. Last year it was very difficult to guess his squad. Is that because it was Norwick and lacked the "class" of the Villa squad and this year it will be more stable?

      Agree with the TOT defence

Hoilett is Canadian and will do us proud.

      So to summarise:

      Spurs defence crap.

Villa attack lloks good, defence largely unkown under Lambert. I'd add Holman in there BTW.

The forgotten mids, forgotten for a reason. They may well perform but aside from Lallana, there are better options.

      All just IMO, I'm a noob 😀

What happens with Aguero and Tevez when 1) Mancini reverts to 443 or 2) when Balotelli is fit. And who is most at risk when these happen?

    My impression is

    1) Tevez gets moved back to where he finished last season, or at worst is substituted. Aguero stays as top gun.

    2) Balotelli will affect Aguero and Tevez equally, however I think he will be used as a sub, so in this sense I dont rhink it will affect their playing time negatively - there will always be a chance of substiution whether or not Balotelli is available or not.

I think that is likely as well. He is a one of a kind player. No one in the world like him.

However. Playing a bit deeper at the end of last season he was not near the potential returns Aguero was getting. Which is what will happen when Mancini changes to 433. And that can happen T any moment

All this scaremongering about Chelsea mids has caused me to come up with an alternative plan despite having kept my old one for a couple of weeks. What do you guys think of this lot.

    DDG, Federici

    Cole, Hangeland, Saylor, Fabio, Clyne

    VDV, Piennar, N'Zogbio, Michu, Noble

    Rooney, Torres, Tevez

The idea is to trade out Cole for City defence before GW3. Everyone else has strong fixtures and my defensive rotation works. I shouldn't need Noble much at all so if his place is in question its no big deal

That looks good, but there's a distinct lack of flexibility in the price points.

If Bale or Hazard or someone like that hits form, you're scrambling to make the changes. Your mids are all 6.5 priced. I like as a rule to get players from a few different price points. 9.5, 6.5, 5.0, 8.0 etc.

Also, benching players. That's going to be tricky for you especially in defense. I wouldn't want to have to pick between those guys week in, week out. Bound to make a few mistakes and every player left on your bench is money you could have invested in your playing XI.

Yes I suppose. But what if you don't want to get rid of him?

What I'm saying is straight swapping. Like for like. You simply don't have as many options for a straight swaps.

Let's say Ben Arfa or Gervinho suddenly start scoring. How are you going to get them in without gutting your team?

I have 3 big hitters up front the idea would be to sell the one that is performing the least. Also it works if I save a transfer so with 2 FT's its not really an issue. It would be a real kneejerk to make a trade after GW1

This is almost identical to my team Ryan.

Differences: Ivan Gunter & Demel for Cole Fabio & Clyne

Bale & Larsson & Kac for VDV & Piennar & Noble

Going Kun for GW1 +1 banked for Rooney GW2.

      So Love the team.

Cheers. I think it sets a good base and it shouldn't require many transfers as they all have solid fixtures. So long as I don't kneejerk and save a transfer after GW1 it should be fine

A very difficult question. Why? Because AVB plays a different formation and thus Modric' position from last season does not exist. Personally I think AVB will change it around a lot and I think we will see Siggy in several positions eachgame

A distinct lack of Chelsea players for the DGW could be an issue.

Clichy and Dempsey will also be doubts early on due to rotation and the potential to be transferred

    Jaask Ruddy
    Cole Lescott Cellular Hangeland Clyne
    Bale Michu Lampard Guthrie Noble
    Aguero Graham Torres
    +2m

-Ruddy rotates of with Jaask for fist few weeks, want Begovic but will wait to ensure hes number 1
    - Torres to Rooney. Of course!
    - Cole to Newcastle def for gw3
    - may take a hit that week and Lampard to Kagawa depending on form
    - Really want Aguero over Tevez
-RVP to Man u would break all my plans!

I guess aguero is the alternative to Tevez so I'll add one for that.
I have gone for 3 big hitters up front which is not normal and Graham is a good option so you get another point for that.
Bale is also good but I can't afford him with 3 big hitters up front so that is another point for you.
I would give you a point for Michu but you now have 2 Swansea players so no point for that.
I'll let you off with Hangekand but not the GKs so that's one more point.
          Total: 8/15

Solid team. Not sure if Guthrie and Noble rotate but be aware that some think Noble isn't as nailed on as we might think.

Lampard may be a waste of a transfer as well. He has the potential to not do that well in the DGW and is a risk of gametime due to internationals and fixture congestion

Nice team. 1 thing with the GK rotation, if you were to get begs from the start it would save a pretty crucial early transfer, since Stoke don't have great opening fixtures you wouldn't be playing him much anyway. Just something to think about.

I like it although it’s risky. Did a similar thing last year and worked out alright (came in about 5k in the ranking). Must admit though, this year it seems harder to pick a team……not really sure why!!!

    Zabaleta/A.Cole/Hangeland/Cuellar/Gunter
    Bale/Cazorla/Nasri/Taarabt/Robson-Kanu
