With two days until the season kick-off, Robin Van Persie’s future appears to have been decided with the announcement that Arsenal have agreed terms with Manchester United.

The official statement arrived this evening from Arsenal and United have also offered confirmation of the move, subject to a medical.

This is obviously momentous news on the eve of the Premier League and Fantasy season. Undoubtedly the biggest move of the summer transfer window so far, the Dutchman’s move to Old Trafford is – from a Fantasy perspective – arguably the most significant transfer since Cristiano Ronaldo left the Old Trafford club for Real Madrid in 2009:

Sir Alex Ferguson’s acquisition of the former Gunners skipper hands United a lethal looking frontline as they look to wrestle the title back from neighbours City. The two top scoring players in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) in 2011/12, Van Persie and Rooney – with 269 and 230 points respectively – will surely rack up goals aplenty but, with either of the two more than capable of accruing huge points hauls to the other’s detriment in any given Gameweek, we are left with an unwanted armband dilemma as the Fantasy landscape around us is altered irrevocably.

Quite how Van Persie will fit into the pecking order in terms of set-pieces and spot-kicks is a crucial factor which will be keenly anticipated by Fantasy managers – if Rooney continues as the number one for penalties, the Dutchman’s stock will clearly drop in our estimations, with a tussle for bonus also a significant factor is how we invest in the United frontline. The Fantasy popularity of new boy Shinji Kagawa perhaps now looks a little less appealing until a clearer picture of the situation at Old Trafford, in terms of tactics and the likelihood of rotation, is established.

Over at the Emirates, Van Persie’s departure is surely set to boost the long-term appeal of new signings Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud. The Gunners’ French-based scout Gilles Grimandi admitted only last month that Giroud was signed from Montpellier in anticipation of Van Persie leaving – a central role looks likely for the Frenchman, then, but with Wenger conceding his summer signings will be eased into action in the season ahead, their initial impact is perhaps questionable. Despite this, it seems Podolski, at least, is set to start against Sunderland on Saturday as the Gunners gear up for action without their former skipper.

Fellow new-boy Santi Cazorla, though, now looks the most likely Gunner to benefit in terms of set-pieces; potentially, he should be handed corners and free-kicks, while the issue of spot-kicks looks up for grabs – Podolski scored from the spot on Sunday, though it’s worth noting that Mikel Arteta didn’t feature in the 4-0 win over Cologne.

We’ll have more on the full impact of the Van Persie move and its knock-on effects for both sides in a more substantial Moving Target later.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

keepers are fine. i reckon people will criticise the team (and this will sound daft) because you've hidden your main players in the middler of the text.

        People see:

        First GK, sub
        Df, Df, Df, sub, sub
        Star, Star, Mf, sub, sub,
        Star, Star, fw

You've hidden Cazorla and Zaba and Cole - if the first name on the line is cack people think it only gets worse

So unless United play a 4-1-2-1-2 I don't see Kagawa as being a viable punt anymore. Back to Valencia for United coverage. And keeping some cash in the bank for a possible RVP/Rooney transfer.

    Dear all bandwagonists.

It has come to my attention that some RMT's include RVP, he has not passed medical and is v unlikely to start saturday for either club because of this (correct me if i am wrong)
Therefore it IMO would be foolish for him to be placed on the bench for GW1 due to his hefty price tag.

    Yours Faithfully,

    JT

    P.S. could do Torres-->RVP GW2?

Alright so i'm a United fan and i'm going to put some perspective to this move. A lot of it is assumption but this is what i think. Squad depth is the primary reason for this RVP move. And no, that does not mean that Rooney or RVP will be on the bench every week. United have class strikers as back up in Welbeck + Chicharito. After http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9K0S_d3Oq-o SAF's ego is hurt and he needs to find a solution to challenge for all three trophies (FA cup + EPL + UCL). What i have noticed as a trend in the last 4 seasons or so is that the United players do look very drained when the big cup games and the UCL games come up and when you have a big game against a Liverpool at the weekend followed by lets say a Champions league semi-final against Bayern after that, you need to be able to give a Rooney/RVP a rest so that the other can do the job and can still be very fresh for the next big game. Do not forget, this could be fergie's last 2-3 years at the helm and while Chicha + Welbs did offer good strength in depth, to seriously challenge on all fronts, Fergie needed a big hitter there somewhere. He did not want to take a chance and wanted a 2nd world class striker there in what could be the last team put together by him.

    My thoughts. Cheers.

I agree that the depth is the main factor in the buy. I agree that SAF was not happy about the UCL exit and as such will field strong teams in UCL group stage this season, and RVP will help him do this.

Doesn't make things easier for us FF managers though.

If only the managers cared about us FPL managers. Just so you know, i've still got Rooney pencilled in for GW2. RVP's arrival makes him know that he can't slip up in performance (he's not the rooney of 2 years ago) and he will up his game.

Very good post and totally agree - Utd need depth as compared to a few of the top 4 teams we don't have the squad depth to challenge on all fronts. TBH it was a miracle SAF managed to take the title to the last day - even if we could have won it when 8 points clear in April.
But, what I also see as very important here is that Utd need to be seen to be making big signings - its been too long since they signed a truly marquee player and it was needed to send out a message not just to our rivals but to players around the world - that United still mean business and are an attractive club to come to.

Arsene Wenger has claimed he has already signed a replacement for Robin van Persie following confirmation that Arsenal and Manchester United have agreed for the Dutchman and admitted he had no choice but to sell the striker.

When asked by TF1 whether he will recruit another player to replace Van Persie, Wenger replied: "We already recruited to replace him.

"It's sad to lose a player of his quality. He had a year left on his contract so we didn't have the choice."

DDG not nailed on over Lindegaard. No value defenders as of now. Uncertainty in midfield. Uncertainty in strikers. Who's with me for Team No Man Utd 😉

I'm just lumping for Nemanja 'I'm gonna eat your children' Vidic. Sod the rest for now. Can sort it out with a WC after it inevitably goes tits up by GW3 or something.

I think my plan is to leave Utd alone for a while and see how things develop. Anyone else thinking the same? That would also mean fielding a stronger team in GW1 without the customary 2mil spare.

As of now Arsenal have neither a captain or a penalty taker. Obviously Vermaelen will be captain but i hope Arsene Wenger reveals the pen taker before saturday
