With two days until the season kick-off, Robin Van Persie’s future appears to have been decided with the announcement that Arsenal have agreed terms with Manchester United.

The official statement arrived this evening from Arsenal and United have also offered confirmation of the move, subject to a medical.

This is obviously momentous news on the eve of the Premier League and Fantasy season. Undoubtedly the biggest move of the summer transfer window so far, the Dutchman’s move to Old Trafford is – from a Fantasy perspective – arguably the most significant transfer since Cristiano Ronaldo left the Old Trafford club for Real Madrid in 2009:

Sir Alex Ferguson’s acquisition of the former Gunners skipper hands United a lethal looking frontline as they look to wrestle the title back from neighbours City. The two top scoring players in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) in 2011/12, Van Persie and Rooney – with 269 and 230 points respectively – will surely rack up goals aplenty but, with either of the two more than capable of accruing huge points hauls to the other’s detriment in any given Gameweek, we are left with an unwanted armband dilemma as the Fantasy landscape around us is altered irrevocably.

Quite how Van Persie will fit into the pecking order in terms of set-pieces and spot-kicks is a crucial factor which will be keenly anticipated by Fantasy managers – if Rooney continues as the number one for penalties, the Dutchman’s stock will clearly drop in our estimations, with a tussle for bonus also a significant factor is how we invest in the United frontline. The Fantasy popularity of new boy Shinji Kagawa perhaps now looks a little less appealing until a clearer picture of the situation at Old Trafford, in terms of tactics and the likelihood of rotation, is established.

Over at the Emirates, Van Persie’s departure is surely set to boost the long-term appeal of new signings Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud. The Gunners’ French-based scout Gilles Grimandi admitted only last month that Giroud was signed from Montpellier in anticipation of Van Persie leaving – a central role looks likely for the Frenchman, then, but with Wenger conceding his summer signings will be eased into action in the season ahead, their initial impact is perhaps questionable. Despite this, it seems Podolski, at least, is set to start against Sunderland on Saturday as the Gunners gear up for action without their former skipper.

Fellow new-boy Santi Cazorla, though, now looks the most likely Gunner to benefit in terms of set-pieces; potentially, he should be handed corners and free-kicks, while the issue of spot-kicks looks up for grabs – Podolski scored from the spot on Sunday, though it’s worth noting that Mikel Arteta didn’t feature in the 4-0 win over Cologne.

We’ll have more on the full impact of the Van Persie move and its knock-on effects for both sides in a more substantial Moving Target later.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

how do we expect Spurs to line up with both Siggy and VDV on the pitch?
Who will be playing further forward?
Will Defoe start up top come GW1?

when vdv is on the pitch hes behind the striker, thats what he likes and i doubt AVB will change that. defoe should start gw1 for sure, that goal in the friendly should provide some confidence. I still think siggy will score well and justify his price over the first nice run of fixtures despite playing deeper, he will get set piece work and he will venture into the area at times, and weve seen how good he can be, he doesnt need loads of chances.

Podolski. It seems he is more likely to start against Sunderland and Giroud it seems will be eased in. As far as I know this is just speculation but it makes sense as Giroud is more inexperienced and Podolski is in decent form.

      Good question.
Giroud will play centrally, but I feel he will play less minutes as Podolski can start on both flanks and through the middle.
Would be an easier one if we knew Podolski was on penalties with Arteta there.

Giroud is a huge differential prospect too. At 9.0 he'll play up top for a top team and he's only owned by 1.7%.

        Think he'll play vs Sun?

I have Nasri (to become sessegnon), N'zogbia and guthrie

I will upgrade Ivanovic to Baines after the DGW
Guthrie fits nicely into Grahams two tough away fixtures

    Afternoon fellow dead zoners!

    What do you reckon guys?

    Friedel / Green
    Cole / Hangeland / Clark / Fox / McCartney
    Lampard / VDV / Ramires / Maloney / Noble
    Graham / Rooney / Aguero

1.0 in the bank for possible Rooney to RVP move.

Are there any decent mids for 5.5 i could get instead of Maloney (while downgrading Fox to Clyne)?

A couple of my posts that the DZ might find helpful.

Alright so i’m a United fan and i’m going to put some perspective to this move. A lot of it is assumption but this is what i think. Squad depth is the primary reason for this RVP move. And no, that does not mean that Rooney or RVP will be on the bench every week. United have class strikers as back up in Welbeck + Chicharito. After http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9K0S_d3Oq-o SAF’s ego is hurt and he needs to find a solution to challenge for all three trophies (FA cup + EPL + UCL). What i have noticed as a trend in the last 4 seasons or so is that the United players do look very drained when the big cup games and the UCL games come up and when you have a big game against a Liverpool at the weekend followed by lets say a Champions league semi-final against Bayern after that, you need to be able to give a Rooney/RVP a rest so that the other can do the job and can still be very fresh for the next big game. Do not forget, this could be fergie’s last 2-3 years at the helm and while Chicha + Welbs did offer good strength in depth, to seriously challenge on all fronts, Fergie needed a big hitter there somewhere. He did not want to take a chance and wanted a 2nd world class striker there in what could be the last team put together by him.

All of you waiting and watching and not going ahead with United coverage, i have to say a couple of things.

FUL, sot, WIG (Fixtures you will be missing)

Also, remember a certain 8-2 scoreline GW2? United’s ego was hurt and they have all been waiting to kick start the season with a statement of intent. Do not invest at your own peril. If you want to take my advice, go with Rooney.

agree, but most is obvious... 😉
I wont get Rooney, or Van Persie.. but tell me y u prefer Rooney?
Do you expect them to play something overcomplicated like 4-1-3-2 (will never happend) or do u actually think its as simple as 4-4-2? 😀

4-4-2 vs the weaker teams at home(Maybe with even Kagawa as a CM) .4-3-3 vs the stronger teams home and away. Fergie will not stick to one formation when it comes to the front 6. I think RVP coming in pushes Rooney to up his game. Rooney is the most nailed on player in the United team at the moment.

My only dilemma at the moment is this:

    A) £6.5m midfielder (McClean?) and Graham
    B) Michu and Petric

Leaning towards A as I think Graham will have a great start to the season, but don't like McClean due to Sunderland struggling up front at present.

    Please advise!

Hazard's comedy showing in community shield has seen his % fall - wont be long before he becomes a differential.

Am I right in thinking that there is less running involved in ACM, then wide of a front 3? So somebody like cazorla is less likely to be rotated than walcott?

Depends. It could be an ACM who is essentially a playmaker or it could be an ACM who drifts on either of the wings or doubles up as a striker. Depends on what kind of an ACM. And fitness levels of the players you are talking about. You cant pin that to this thumb rule.
