Back for a new season, with “sailing fan” Granville now woken from his Olympic dream, we return for another podcast after a three-month hiatus.

While some of the regulars are shelved this week, we talk over the Sky Sports Game, welcome new Fantasy Football double act “Fenners & Merse” and start the clear up after Robin Van Persie kicked over the applecart.

The episode is underpinned by a new concept – the idea that Granville and I can join forces and actually be effective. The premise is we pick a ScoutCast XI and cross our beams to co-manage it over the season, arguing the toss in every ScoutCast episode on transfers and substitutions. The aim is harmony and a united success. It seems unlikely to end that way.

Oh, and there are actually two of my “jokes” that Granville misses in this episode – see if you can make out the second. I swear he was dreaming of gold medals in the sailing.

Listen in on the squad selection via this link.

Alternatively, stream it down your pipe using the player below…

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Are there any Royals out there who know the likelyhood of Robson-Kanu starting for Reading? I noticed he took the last pen when both Harte and Le Fondre were on the pitch – is he their first choice penalty taker now?

Not really a west ham fan but I'd guess he's too old and they have better alternatives. He's not in the starting lineup on the team news section so that was where I got my statement from.

I've gone off having any 4m defenders. At least until my WC when we will know how the defences are doing this year. I think that rotating three 4m defenders is a terrible idea, as the best of 3 shit defenders, is still unlikely to get a clean sheet.

I'm set on having a 4.5m midfielder as a bench sitter
And rotating hughes/cuellar, so one should sit on the bench every week

    If I have a 4m defender, then it limits my flexibility. I'm thinking that if bring in another big hitting defender (3 bigs, + 2 x 4.5m), and downgrade one of my mids (willl then have 1 x 9.5m, 1 x 9m, 1 x 6.5m, 1 x 6m, 1 x 4.5m), then I will be have more flexibility, because i can pick the best 2 from 3, 6-6.5m forwards.

I know an argument against this is that you will have a 6m player on your bench every week, but I don't mind that when it means I don't have to play a 4m defender every week!

    Does that make any sense?

      Hard to upgrade 4.0m defenders.

      I've got 1, plus 2x 4.5s. 3 is too many IMO, wouldn't even go with 2.

I play with two 4m (there are a lot more of them around this season).

After having picked my front 7, that is what I could build around it.

It does matter how much money you have on the bench as long as your XI is getting the points, imo.

Hey China.....I think 2@6.5 defenders is enough...then 4.5/4.0/4.0 that rotate well...

@ 4.5 i reckon there are many nailed on options at that price. Cuellar/Fabio/Fiugeroa

Also......at 4.0 i think that Tierney is a steal.....NOR have excellent GK and imo were unlucky not to have kept a few more CS last season. WIth a new manager, i reckon they will tighten up.

I think there are two many unknowns surrounding the 4m defenders. Who will play? How will the respective defences perform in the premier? I think I will hold off on them until I WC. But that is just this mornings thinking! Could all change again

    Lost on the last page:

    Current team:

    Friedel, Green
    Clyne, Gunter, Demel, Verm, Zab
    Bale, Mata, Robson-Kanu, Noble, ?
    Tevez, Torres, ?

    Which is better?

A.) Aguero and Dyer–0.5 left and Aguero to Rooney week 2…
    or
    B.) Bent and Cazorla–0.0 left

I'd go with A, so you can cash in on Aguero's goals and assists during gw1, but still switch to Rooney allowing you to have an easy option for picking your captain in the following gameweeks, granted that you keep Tevez.

Like the look of your team.

Hughes will probably start. I did go for Hang.

I'm stuck on Guthrie at 4.5 and would love to bump it up, but can't just yet.

I'm also going Pienaar. I would go Michu, but, like you, I have Graham ... and don't want to double up on Swans attack just yet. I feel good about Pienaar. After GW1, his fixtures aren't bad at all.

why is pienaar not nailed on to start? did i missed something?

for 4.5m, i would get guthrie. I have a similar front 8 with you, and you will be benching the 4,5m every week anyway, so why not make use of the dgw and get 4pts. from guthrie? maybe even more, god knows. Also, GUthrie is nailed on, and that is the most imprtant feature of a bench warmers.

for hughes, I think he is 75% to start, but may still get rotated with senderos at some point, i fear. and maybe braid will also get some game time?? I am not a fulham fan, so i am not sure about that. but if you found another .5, I would just get Saylor instead. More CS potential, and a bonus magnet. He rotates well with Cuellar too

Yea I get that but they're going to be benched most of the times anyway so not much of an issue.
Also there is no guarantee that the big defenders will deliver CS regularly esp. with tougher fixtures and better attacking teams. If you MUST go with 3 big hitters wait for 3-4 weeks to see which teams are getting the results and then get the big 3.

Sun(H) for Dyer and Ful(H) for Noble GW3 so I dont mind benching Mata.

BTW why isnt Noble nailed on anymore ?? I thought he was one of their important players with Fk and Penalty duties too.

What do we think the prices of Rooney and RVP would have been if the move had happened before they were set?

Aguero's relatively low price in comparison to RVP and Rooney, must have been because there were other strikers to share things with at city, whereas there weren't at man utd and arsenal.

So basically, the man utd pair are now over valued. Yes they will score a shed load, but probably not enough to justify their prices. They key to this game is to highlight player who are UNDERVALUED.

That's my (current) two penneth anyway!

Personally i am staying away for MUN striker until we see how they perform.....United played very well last season when Rooney dropped deep. (Scholes position). He is an animal in the midfield. Now with RVP upfront, they have an amazing goal threat one which Welbeck could not match last season.

Also unsure on Vertonghan. Tott dont have a holding midfielder at this stage and are losing modric. Also AVBs chelsea leaked goals in the beginning. I would go Zabaleta to start and see how they go.

with you on the leaky defence bit, but vertonghen is a goal-scoring machine, and, given avb's general strategy, i'd imagine it's the perfect storm for the big man.

    Howdy Deadzoners.

In the never ending tweaking of the team, I've arrived at a new place. About the 34th stop off of this maddening pre-season posturing.

Anyhow, if anyone would be kind enough to pass their thoughts it would be appreciated on this long night at work finishing FIFA 13.

My reasoning for a) is that, assuming no injuries, I will only play the 5th mid in GW1 over the first 8 GWs, and I think Kos will get more cleanies and offers more attack than Hange. Also, Hughes at 4.5m is value once he's confirmed fit.

Only thing is, if a front 7 player gets rested then I'd much rather have Noble come in over Guthrie. Also, he has a decent fixture in GW3.

Its looking good for newcastle this weekend

Only barfa and cabeye still listed as doubts. No further word on tiote or ba, which hopefully means that they are fit to start, but if not, we have good cover in anita and dave anyway

As far as I can work out, spurs will be without parker, sandro, modric, and adebayor. Anyone care to predict the spurs team for the weekend?

for those considering jenkinson, and arsenal defenders in general, if he plays the first 6 fixtures he's directly facing:
    mcclean
    etherington
potentially suarez (but could be downing)
    SOT, which is fine
    man city
    hazard

    this would worry me :p

Is Snodgrass too big of a risk? I think Norwich will do well this season and they have pretty descent fixtures in the beginning. Snodgrass is a goal/assist threat playing in the hole and is a change from the more popular options at that price range.
