Back for a new season, with “sailing fan” Granville now woken from his Olympic dream, we return for another podcast after a three-month hiatus.

While some of the regulars are shelved this week, we talk over the Sky Sports Game, welcome new Fantasy Football double act “Fenners & Merse” and start the clear up after Robin Van Persie kicked over the applecart.

The episode is underpinned by a new concept – the idea that Granville and I can join forces and actually be effective. The premise is we pick a ScoutCast XI and cross our beams to co-manage it over the season, arguing the toss in every ScoutCast episode on transfers and substitutions. The aim is harmony and a united success. It seems unlikely to end that way.

Oh, and there are actually two of my “jokes” that Granville misses in this episode – see if you can make out the second. I swear he was dreaming of gold medals in the sailing.

Listen in on the squad selection via this link.

Alternatively, stream it down your pipe using the player below…

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

        The other team looks:

        Frie, Fede

        Cole, Zaba, Hange, McCart, Clyne

Bale, Mata, Pienaar, Zogbia & Dyer or Michu & Ireland

Who would you rather have on your team right now, Jelavic or Tevez, and why? And if the answer is Tevez, is it worth having Yaya as well?

If you have Aguero then Jelly
      If no Aguero then Tevez

Yaya is a good punt even with Tevez

I thought about that too, but if I end up getting Tevez (which I think I will do now) then I won't want a City midfielder. Already got Zab in defense, I don't feel like I need three players from Man City for now.

Tevez has been better previously yes, but Jelavic has better starting fixtures and will not be rotated. Rotation is the main reason I had doubts about Tevez.

Don't like Everton's offense, so don't see consistent returns from Jelavic, at £8.5, better at the £6.5 he was last year.

Tevez right now. Starting on the champs. He'll rotate eventually, but there will be other options. I think Yaya is a good option, but I know that isn't a unanimous opinion. I don't worry about too many City or Man U players ... the more I can fit in the better.

    A) Mata, Bale, Saylor - I will swap Cole out for a city defender in GW3

    B) Lampard, VDV, Zab - I will swap out Cole for Saylor in GW3

Which option is better? essentially B) gives me city defence for the first 2 games

Yeah I currently have 3 big hitting mids and there are only so many options so one of them kind of had to be a chelsea player. I think the value in Uniteds attack will be in their midfield this year as well, especially with RVP now in the team. Gives me a game to assess things there

Hedge your bets, in my opinion.

Swansea may struggle defensively this season so ye may as well have 2 poor keeper choices instead of potentially just 1 that you will have to then play every week.

If you are going down the Vorm route then why not get Krul, who costs the same but has none of the question marks over his team that Vorm has?

Would you prefer a 7m defender + 5m midfielder (to be used in rotation with other low-mid pricers)

    or

An 8m mid (ie sessegnon) + 4m bench sitter (means that your 5-6.5m players all have to play every fixture)

Forget about balance of the rest of the team for a moment. I am just talking about the points potential of the above combinations.

assuming the players are worth their exact value, then i'd go for the latter as mids tend to end up with higher overall scores over the course of the season, so better to put your money there.

If I had a 4m defender, I would avoid playing him at all costs!! One of the promoted teams might prove to have a solid defence, but until we see what they are like, we should assume they will all be shit!

As most people agree with a), why are so many people against the 3 big defenders strategy? My current draft is

            DDG, Federici
            Vidic, Baines, Zabaleta, Cuellar/Hughes
Bale, VDV (or Siggie), N'Zogbai, Tarabaat, Marveaux
            Tevez, Torres, Graham

I would choose 2 from N'Zogbia, Tarabaat, Marveaux, Graham (and cuellar/hughes) depending on fixtures

I would have ivanovic and nasri for the first game (to become baines and VDV/siggie)

So on the bench for nearly every game would be cuellar/hughes and marveaux (though he will become guthrie at some point if he doesn't keep his place).

I then have the flexibility of selecting the best players for each game.

If you have 4m defenders, your team is pretty much fixed for each game, and if a 4m defender players, he is highly unlikely to get any CS points

Not sure its such a good idea to invest so much in defence ay. Also Baines won't have it all his way in set pieces either. Some good attacking players have been signed for Everton.

I know it goes against common ffs theory, but i can't get away from the fact that there will be so much rotaiton in the big mids and forwards, maybe its better to have big defenders who will play every game.

I think that baines will still have plenty of set pieces. His assist rate should increase now he has someone to aim at. Having said that, if he loses penalties, i won't pick him

Also, I don't think that I lose that much going forward, as I can rotate my 3 6-6.5m forwards (2 per game).

Being able to do that, rather than having to play them every game increases their value

It's different, and that defence is pretty immense. I really ummed and aahhed over Taarabt, but ultimately decided against him as, his first 2 fixtures aside, he has poor fixtures, and there is an element of doubt over his starting spot with Cisse, Zamora and Hoilett in the mix. The rest is fine, Marveaux is clearly your cheapie gamble, and N'Zog is a decent punt in that range - an easy upgrade to Pienaar if he fails.

              Things i don't like:
              1) Using 2 spots for MUN defenders. If, as expected, they go all guns blazing with their ridiculous attach, you'll probably want 2 attackers.
              2) Personally I'd rather get a 3rd BH midfielder in there - you won't want to ditch Bale/VDV with their fixtures, and if the likes of Mata/Nani/Kagawa/Cazorla/Walcott hit form it'll be tricky to work them in.

Overall, it's a decent team though.

I agree with Jins, I think this could be the season where big hitting mids is where its at. RVP and Rooney are no longer considerations and Tevez offers way better value than Aguero. Squads will have money to spend so I think BH midfield assets will be crucial for the campaign

Cheers. I have only just turned to taraabt, as with this new strategy, i will only play him in his home fixtures (which are pretty sweet)

I know what you are saying about man utd defence. I might look at swapping my keepers for Mignolet/schwarzer (don't mind doubling up) and using the 1m elsewhere

See my post above, i think there is a lot of value in being able to select 2 from 3 lower mid price options, rather than having to play them every game. I think that 2 big hitting midfield spots might be enough (will probably do VDV - Carzola for GW6)

I have zero faith in southampton to keep clean sheets. The same goes for all promoted defences. No doubt one of them will prove ok, and when i WC with that knowledge. I will probably bring in one or two 4m defenders

If you get the balance right with 2 expensive 1 mid and 2 cheap you will hardly need the cheap players anyway. Thats kinda what I've done. Also you save money that can be invested in midfield

Ryan, but one of the main advantages of my strategy is that it limits the number of players "you will hardly need anyway". One is enough for me (4.5m mid).

mcclean, nzog, pienaar, michu are all pretty good 6.5 picks. i'd worry more about torres, do you have money to switch him to rooney? plus allen has terrible fixtures and podolski failed last time he went to a big club. it's all a bit risky for my tastes, i don't think the strat of having a really strong defense historically tends to work for long...

I would pick a £4.5m keeper to go with Hart.

If you're spending £11m on a keeper combo then you may as well spend an extra £0.5m to get a keeper who will start every week in case something happens to Hart one week.

Why Jose E? Liverpool have terrible fixtures to begin with, I would stay away from their defense at the start, and I probably wouldn't get Allen yet either. Also Kompany should be downgraded to Zab in my opinion, it would free up more money for midfield. Otherwise a very good team!

just want to ask for opinions before gw1 starts. this is what my team looks like so far:

DDG, begovic (worth the risk of rotation at only 4.5 and will be playing DDG most games anyways)
lescott, a cole, cuellar, mccartney, clyne
    bale, cazorla, lampard, michu, noble
    torres, tevez, graham

then when i see how man utd line up, a cole -> hangeland, lampard -> kagawa, torres -> rooney.

    what do you think?

you won't ever see how utd line up 'cause they'll rotate on a game-by-game basis even moreso than ever this season, methinks. decent team though!

well rooney will always play no matter what, and what i meant was to see whether he plays a deeper role when playing with rvp because that will remain pretty constant. and kagawa may be rotated, but seeing how they play first will at least give us some idea. no matter how much saf rotates, he will want a strong starting xi.

i think its not wise to get a not nailed on backup for DDG. id rather get a 4.0 space filler than begovic as partner to DDG. at least theres .5 to do something with.

i think begovic should be nailed on. at 4.5, he's reliable for cs throughout the season and if i really needed that 0.5, i can always transfer out and take a -4 hit. i'm willing to take the risk with begovic

i am going with DDG and Fed. My thinkng if rotation gets too frequent, i will down grade him and free cash (which might not be a bad thing)

Reading had 18ish CS last season.....i figure them for 5 to 7 in the premiership. I think it is wise to have 4.5 until WC. Also, you have DGW (If you dare to play him GW1)

Not at all. He's definitely behind Kebe in the pecking order.
But he's injured right now. So it's between him and McCleary for that one spot. And regarding the penalty, a couple of Reading fans told me he took the penalty just because it was a friendly. He took only one last season and missed it.

Really like it. Copied your move of having Aguero rather than Torres. Much safer and no need to swap to Rooney W2 if he doesn't look good.

Only differences I have is DeGea in goal, Zebellata in defence and Hughes over Hengaland.

good team you might be putting a lil too much faith in hazard and kagawa tho , may need some time..plus kagawa isnt nailed on. id replace hazard to mata..
      definite and proven starter 🙂

yea lot of punts. but its all or nothing in the first week. last year i had aguero captain and got off flying. i guess two years in a row is a bit much to ask?

not sure mata will get 180 mins. he was virtually nonexistent against city.

Fuzzy, my latest draft is a few posts up. I've shown you mine, you show me yours? (be aware it has changed several times in the last day, so it may again)

Who would you guys say is the best midfielder for 8 million or less, other than Yaya Toure? I have just brought Tevez on, and I see now reason for having Yaya now.

Dyer is good but I wouldn't know what to do with the extra money, plus it would mean 3 Swansea players which may be too many. If I were to go for a Swansea midfielder, it might be Sinclair.
Piennar might be a good option, but don't always have the best starts.
Song has never been a good fantasy player for me, I don't plan on investing in any arsenal players at the start at least.

      Ramires, Taarabt, Michu,

Or perhaps take a gamble on Gervinho at 7.5..
He's had a really good pre season and he will more than likely start the season on the left side of attack! Could provide the differential one needs!

Ramires is good, but it would mean three Chelsea players.
Taarabt isn't always a great choice in FPL, and QPR's opening fixtures aren't great.
I don't feel like I know enough about Michu to choose him yet.
As for Gervinho, he could be a decent option for a differential, but Arsenal have a bad first six gameweeks.

ben arfa can explode, but crappy fixtures and injury doubt. start off with a 6.5 (pienaar or michu) and keep an eye on barfa
