Alan Pardew is sweating over the fitness of Yohan Cabaye and Hatem Ben Arfa ahead of Tottenham’s visit to the Sports Direct Arena on Saturday evening. Liverpool have agreed a deal to sign wide man Oussama Assaidi from SC Heerenveen, Norwich snap up former City left-back Javier Garrido on loan, while Swansea sign Kyle Bartley from Arsenal…

Yohan Cabaye and Hatem Ben Arfa both remain “still doubtful” for Newcastle’s home clash with Spurs on Saturday evening, according to Alan Pardew. The French duo have barely featured in pre-season due to their Euro 2012 commitments and, while Ben Arfa’s omission is likely to hand Sylvain Marveaux a starting role on the right flank, the possible absence of Cabaye could be offset by the news that the Magpies have signed Vurnon Anita from Ajax on a five-year deal. The 23-year old can also play in defence but Pardew admitted yesterday that he anticipates his new signing to mainly feature in midfield in the season ahead. The Newcastle boss also revealed Papiss Cisse has recovered from a recent hamstring problem and will be available for selection against Andre Villas-Boas’ side – Pardew failed to mention Demba Ba, who has been nursing a shin problem, though it’s worth remembering the Senegalese striker slumped in form this time last year after fasting during Ramadan.

Liverpool have agreed terms with SC Heerenveen for the transfer of winger Oussama Assaidi. The deal is subject to a medical but, upon completion, is likely to raise concerns over the club’s bid to sign Clint Dempsey from Fulham. The Reds have been linked with the US international all season but with Assaidi’s preferred position as an inverted winger on the left, it may well be that Brendan Rodgers has given up on the chase to snap up Dempsey, bearing in mind that Luis Suarez is likely to be fielded on the flanks in Rodgers’ preferred 4-3-3 formation. The transfer also raises question marks over the game time of Stewart Downing – the former Villa man has been stationed on the right in recent matches and, at 6.5 in FPL, had looked an intriguing prospect, but he could well be restricted to a sub role is Assaidi completes his move.

Norwich yesterday completed the signing of Javier Garrido from Lazio on a season-long loan. The former Man City left-back’s return to the Premier League immediately raises major question marks over the game time of Marc Tierney for the season ahead as Chris Hughton continues to bolster his backline. Having shipped 66 goals and returned three clean sheets under Paul Lambert in 2011/12, the Canaries defence was given a wide berth by Fantasy managers but pre-season results have been encouraging, with four clean sheets in the last six friendlies and Tierney – priced at 4.0 in FPL – looked an intriguing option. Dependant on Garrido’s price, it could well that one of Ryan Bennett or Leon Barnett may afford us a cut-price route into Hughton’s backline for the season ahead.

Swansea have signed Kyle Bartley from Arsenal on a three-year deal. The deal is something of a surprise from a Fantasy perspective – with Chico already arriving from Genoa, we’d anticipated the Spaniard forging a partnership with Ashley Williams at the heart of the Welsh club’s defence but Michael Laudrup looks to have other ideas up his sleeve. With a strong starting schedule, the Swans backline seem primed for investment but with doubts surrounding the central areas, Angel Rangel and Neil Taylor could well be a safer bet until we discover the new manager’s intentions. Bartley has yet to be added to the Fantasy games and, while all their main defenders are priced at 5.0 in FPL, Rangel, at 5.7 in the Sky Sports game, looks like the most secure route into Laudrup’s backline right now. Reports have also suggested the Dane is ready to bring Pablo Hernandez to the club, raising question marks over Scott Sinclair and Nathan Dyer with just one day before tomorrow’s big kick-off – hardly ideal as we look to whittle our squads into shape.

          Hmm, in that case I'd avoid all the 4.5m mids. Dyer looks a decent shout at 5.5m for a cheap mid with good fixtures that you wouldn't mind benching in GW1.

      If you like to gamble, Marveaux

      Has a great chance of staying in the team. And if he doesn't, he can rot on your bench until you can get rid

      If you can't gamble with your 5th mid, when can you gamble?

    A or B

    A) DDG – Federici
    Lescott – Hangeland – Saylor – Demel – Barnett
    Nasri – Hazard – Michu – Maloney – Guthrie
    Aguero – Torres – Graham

    3.5m spare for Nasri -> Silva and Torres -> Rooney

    B) DDG – Cerny
    Zabaleta – Hangeland – Saylor – Demel – Barnett
    Nasri – Hazard – Michu – Maloney – Guthrie
    Aguero – Torres Graham

    4.5m spare for Torres -> RVP and Nasri -> Silva

    I know I’ve weakened my defence to fund torres -> rvp in team 2 but I’m hesitant to stick with torres -> rooney out of fear that rooney will be playing in a cam role and rvp will play up top getting the majority of the points.

      Is federici in then for cost reasons? Have you maxed out? I think Koscielny is a slight doubt. As is walcott. I would probably go Carzola for walcott, unless we know for sure walcott will play. Or if you don't want to risk him, maybe go taraabt, and upgrade federici to szchezny

      You have been here a long time, and your ideas are usually well thought of even though some of them don't pan out ultimately (tripling up on City's defence towards the end last year, if memory serves me)

      But this is a really bad idea. I really think the wildcard can be put to much better use. I am sure you already know the pitfalls of this. Only after a few gw's, will the clear picture emerge of how a team is lining up, who are the new talents of this season etc. Not after the first gw itself.

        true, however i think with the swing in fixtures for teams betwen gwk1 and 2 it could well pay off and im hoping to be around 40pts clear after the first 3-4 weeks as i can treble on utd and spurs for their nice runs

        obviously it could go the other way but its a gamble ive decided to take this season after a poor start and shocking team value left me pretty screwed last year

    REALLY tempted by Defoe with Spurs' opening fixtures, but already got VDV and it seems likely that another striker will be signed soon. May just go for Podolski instead.

    I'm also not convinced by Ireland, though he is in my team at the moment. Is he nailed-on to start for Villa? Aren't many other viable options at that price.. although I see Joe Allen is one of the highest-owned players at the moment.

    1.0m in the bank and considering upgrades - would you do any of these, or best to keep 0.5 or 1.0m in the bank to cover price movements?

    a) Hughes -> Hangelaand
    b) Dyer -> Taarabt
    c) Ivanovic -> Terry
    d) Guthrie -> Noble
    e) Dyer -> Piennar

    De Gea, Federici
    Ivanovic, Zabaleta, Cuellar, Hughes, McCartney
    Mata, Bale, VDV, Dyer, Guthrie
    Torres, Tevez, Graham
    Bank 1.0m

    My plan was GW3, Torres -> Rooney/RVP, funded by Mata -> Pienaar (which could be tricky if I go with RVP and don't keep anything in the bank)

    Guys anychance of a RMT, havent done one yet but would love some input!

    de Gea, Federici
    Zabaleta, Hangeland, Cole A, Cuellar, Demel
    Lamps, Bale, Pienaar, Michu, Noble
    Aguero, Tevez, Graham

    0.5m in the bank.

    Only concern is that the only way to get Wayne in is to switch out Aguero, or take a hit to get rid of Lamps & Tevez.

    Hello all. Am I really foolish in wanting to pick Kolarov over Zaba as a 6.0 mancity defender, due to his massive goal/assist threat? he had a good game at the Comm Shield, so why should he not start at the weekend?

      Kolarov was playing left winger in 3-5-2 formation over the weekend, but Mancini said he will revert back to 4-4-2 for which mean he will have to fight Clichy for the LB place.

      It's good. Mata to a United mid week 2? And yeah I'd start Noble if you think he's gonna play (which I guess you must do). Had Noble myself but the uncertainty around him with Diarra and Diame has made me bottle it.

          I think that he will start left forward, with obertan on the right this week. But that's just me!

          He can play on either side, and he has the quality to make the position his own.

          Big risk though!

    A Few things I wanted to rant/talk/discuss about

    My Brother emails me yesterday saying “RVP gone to united…time to rethink everything in my fantasy football” At first i was like shit he is right but soon enough I decided it makes things easier and that having Rooney means not having to worry about RVP like if he was still at Arsenal. Rvp wont be on pens and wont be on set pieces. thats how I felt…until I spoke with a Good friend and clever united and football fan and his views crushed my previous happiness. He reckons that Rooney isnt that good of a peno taker and never really has so easily could share or just be given to RVP. Also united last season took mostly short corners as they “dont have a great corner taker” (his words dont cry at me) and RVP will most definitely will be on corner duty. Free kicks will be rotated in his eyes. Considering all this I cant seem to make up my mind. cut me Bale and Mata to Lamps and Siggy so Torres becomes RVP or Bale Mata Rooney… People you need to help me I haven’t slept in days(joking)…

    NEXT!

    So I Really really want Swansea coverage but cant decide on which way to do it cause Petric is really tempting as well and Fulham have equally as good fixtures as Swans…So here is my question to you.
    Sinclar Worth his 7m price tag? Will he have pens again this year and is Michu better value at 6.5? I dont know much about this Michu guy but from what I gather he is Swans replacement for Siggy so will have the ball alot blah blah blah but does anyone know anything about him? I think I could lean towards Sinclar purely as a differential making the ultimate difference as I dont see him in anyone’s teams on here. What you guys think?

    And Lastly Villa. Ive been throwing players in and out of my team (Bent Holman) but i dont know if its the claret and blue or that they are just shit that I never seem to be happy. Nzogbia? Seriously after last year i cant believe people are talking but him again. Bent over priced, defence is shit but their fixtures are tasty and could grab a few points and i think Holman is the way to go but im yet to be convinced. Anyone care to convince me?
