Alan Pardew is sweating over the fitness of Yohan Cabaye and Hatem Ben Arfa ahead of Tottenham’s visit to the Sports Direct Arena on Saturday evening. Liverpool have agreed a deal to sign wide man Oussama Assaidi from SC Heerenveen, Norwich snap up former City left-back Javier Garrido on loan, while Swansea sign Kyle Bartley from Arsenal…

Yohan Cabaye and Hatem Ben Arfa both remain “still doubtful” for Newcastle’s home clash with Spurs on Saturday evening, according to Alan Pardew. The French duo have barely featured in pre-season due to their Euro 2012 commitments and, while Ben Arfa’s omission is likely to hand Sylvain Marveaux a starting role on the right flank, the possible absence of Cabaye could be offset by the news that the Magpies have signed Vurnon Anita from Ajax on a five-year deal. The 23-year old can also play in defence but Pardew admitted yesterday that he anticipates his new signing to mainly feature in midfield in the season ahead. The Newcastle boss also revealed Papiss Cisse has recovered from a recent hamstring problem and will be available for selection against Andre Villas-Boas’ side – Pardew failed to mention Demba Ba, who has been nursing a shin problem, though it’s worth remembering the Senegalese striker slumped in form this time last year after fasting during Ramadan.

Liverpool have agreed terms with SC Heerenveen for the transfer of winger Oussama Assaidi. The deal is subject to a medical but, upon completion, is likely to raise concerns over the club’s bid to sign Clint Dempsey from Fulham. The Reds have been linked with the US international all season but with Assaidi’s preferred position as an inverted winger on the left, it may well be that Brendan Rodgers has given up on the chase to snap up Dempsey, bearing in mind that Luis Suarez is likely to be fielded on the flanks in Rodgers’ preferred 4-3-3 formation. The transfer also raises question marks over the game time of Stewart Downing – the former Villa man has been stationed on the right in recent matches and, at 6.5 in FPL, had looked an intriguing prospect, but he could well be restricted to a sub role is Assaidi completes his move.

Norwich yesterday completed the signing of Javier Garrido from Lazio on a season-long loan. The former Man City left-back’s return to the Premier League immediately raises major question marks over the game time of Marc Tierney for the season ahead as Chris Hughton continues to bolster his backline. Having shipped 66 goals and returned three clean sheets under Paul Lambert in 2011/12, the Canaries defence was given a wide berth by Fantasy managers but pre-season results have been encouraging, with four clean sheets in the last six friendlies and Tierney – priced at 4.0 in FPL – looked an intriguing option. Dependant on Garrido’s price, it could well that one of Ryan Bennett or Leon Barnett may afford us a cut-price route into Hughton’s backline for the season ahead.

Swansea have signed Kyle Bartley from Arsenal on a three-year deal. The deal is something of a surprise from a Fantasy perspective – with Chico already arriving from Genoa, we’d anticipated the Spaniard forging a partnership with Ashley Williams at the heart of the Welsh club’s defence but Michael Laudrup looks to have other ideas up his sleeve. With a strong starting schedule, the Swans backline seem primed for investment but with doubts surrounding the central areas, Angel Rangel and Neil Taylor could well be a safer bet until we discover the new manager’s intentions. Bartley has yet to be added to the Fantasy games and, while all their main defenders are priced at 5.0 in FPL, Rangel, at 5.7 in the Sky Sports game, looks like the most secure route into Laudrup’s backline right now. Reports have also suggested the Dane is ready to bring Pablo Hernandez to the club, raising question marks over Scott Sinclair and Nathan Dyer with just one day before tomorrow’s big kick-off – hardly ideal as we look to whittle our squads into shape.

You need to rethink your defence. Harte won't start now that Shorey is on board.

Kaboul should start alongside Vertonghen but Dawson is floating around. Hangeland is 0.5 cheaper and is guaranteed to start. I'd bring in Friedel to begin the season.

A lot of rotation risk in your midfield. There are cheaper options which will allow you to upgrade your defence and Pog. Graham or Petric are better options IMO.

    Krul/Ruddy
    Cuellar, Gunter, Hangeland, Simpson, Clyne
    Dempsey, Kagawa, Mata, Michu, Pienaar
    Tevez, Graham, Rooney

Unsure of the 2 new signing in midfield, Michu and Kagawa (ESPECIALLY not RVP is at utd..)
    Any thoughts?

Dempsey hasn't played any pre-season so I'd get rid of him. Kagawa I wouldn't have now RVP has signed, don't quite know how they'll line up (plus rotation of everyone). A wait and see with that one for me.

Asides from that it looks alright I reckon.

you need more CHE coverage for the double!

i'd downgrade one of michu or pienaar to noble or maloney as you don't want to keep so much money on the bench every week.

get rid of both dempsey and kagawa. then get bale and lamps.

I think Kagawa is worth the gamble. Surely the German player of the season is good enough to nail down a starting position in what was a pretty mediocre midfield last year - I am tres confused about all this chat regarding people getting rid because RVP is there - Rooney and RVP on the end of Kagawas incisive balls? Yes please.

It depends how you view your 5th mid. Some people rotate him, others don't. I don't really rotate him unless a real plumb fixture matches poor fixtures for everyone else, I want him to be as cheap as possible.

If you plan to rotate noble with somebody else, keep him. But remember that he isn't nailed on anymore. plenty of competition in the middle

Marveaux is a major punt which could pay off handsomely. If it doesn't come off, he is burried deep in my bench anyway!

ohh good point. well I was mainly gunna rotate him with pienaar and maybe graham depending on fixtures.

if he is nailed on though how well do you think noble will score? he has pens right?

good point. and he will start this week right? cuz that's when i'd really need him.

hmmmm trying to decide if I take the risk with marveaux now and it could pay off or I could be stuck using a transfer to get rid of him or if i wait and see how he does....

Has anyone ever tried the tactic of picking all more expensive defenders who are likely to pick up a few goals? Just experimented with it a little and by raising 2.5 by downgrading Yaya Toure to, say, Beausejour, I could then upgrade my defence to Terry, Vidic, Vermaelen, Hangeland, Ridgewell.

Squad still looks balanced too with midfield of Bale, Mata, Ireland, Beausejour, Noble and strikeforce of Torres, Tevez and Graham. Any thoughts? I was thinking the points difference between the defence upgrade coule far outweigh the points I'd lose from losing Yaya.

Seems balanced mate. I've gone cheap defence and big hitters in midfield and attack. I still feel it's fairly balanced. I'm personally against big hitters in defence. They'll get you a few double pointers but nothing worse than getting 1pt for a £7m+ def, which is likely is lose a CS, get booked, etc.

if you want expensive defenders, only get 3 who will play all the tiem and then save money on two 4.0 benchwarmers

Best two midfielders for £10.5m. Currently on Nolan and Guthrie or should I just pick two £5m's and use the etra 0.5m to bolster my defence?

Too much in defense isnt going to yeild you much, plus your benching some high priced players every week.....

My money isn't in defence. It's in the rest of my midfield and attack.

Wenger will assess Cazorla/Walcott, Koscielny ruled out with calf strain, Chamberlain injured too.

      God damn it Wenger!

You sell RVP and now you decide to "assess" two of your most attacking players!!!

Tosey - abandon ship on Kos!!!

Boys. Got a big weekend coming up as I'm sure you all have. Looking forward to hours of research and saturday afteroon sweating all over again.. Some help would be greatly apprciated, tips etc.

    Hart
    Cole Fabio Enrique
    McAnuff Dempsey Mata Larsson
    Petric Torres Aguero

Q1) Is Hart going to be playing?
    Q2) Any changes you'd make?
Q3) Why hasn't everyone chosen Petric, have you seen the form he has in Pre Season. Gold mine.

    Thanks

    Afternoon Chaps, anyone mind RMT?

    DDG Federici
    Zabaleta Cuellar Fabio Demel Clyne
    Cazorla Bale Valencia Noble Pienaar
    Tevez Graham Torres

Valencia a rotating risk however feel even from RB can create assists...did so last year!

Rest I'm fairly comfortable with. Only thing maybe slightly light in defence? But think all will play & all excluding Cuellar are attacking as banking on that to get me possibly a few points.

    Cheers guys!
