Having rolled out the Scout Picks on Friday evening, we now turn our attentions to the first Differential article of the new campaign. If you’re new to this, the idea is to highlight certain Fantasy assets with low ownership – typically under 5% – ahead of each Gameweek and wax lyrical over their chances for the fixture ahead. This term we’re concentrating on just one player per Gameweek and, to get the ball rolling, we’ve opted for a proven Premier League goalscorer…

Let’s be honest – last season was a bit of a write-off for Darren Bent. The Villa forward arrived on the back of 41 goals over his previous couple of campaigns but the installation of Alex McLeish to the Villa Park hotseat put paid to the forward’s Fantasy potential, as the midlands outfit attempted to grind out results under the former Birmingham boss. As a result, Villa returned a meagre 37 goals over 2011/12, the second lowest tally in the league and only one more than Stoke; starved of service up top, Bent managed just nine goals before his season was ended in early March due to an ankle injury.

With McLeish now nothing more than a bad memory, Villa fans approach the new season with far greater enthusiasm. New boss Paul Lambert has handed his players a license to attack as he looks to replicate the offensive threat of former club Norwich; the Canaries racked up 52 goals upon their top-flight return under the Scot, a goal haul bettered only by the top six last time round. Already, Bent has been singing the praises of the new man in charge, with a change in tactics set to alter how we assess Villa’s Fantasy prospects for the season ahead:

“He wants us to be really dangerous and create loads of chances. He wants us to be an attacking outfit. He has a philosophy where he says: ‘If we’re going to lose, we’re going to lose having a go’. He wants us to have a right good go at every single team. That’s how it should be. We have attacking players in the team who can cause real damage and he’s told them to go out and do their stuff. It’s certainly going to be a dream for me playing that way as a striker.”

Villa roll up to West Ham for their Upton Park opener on the back of decent pre-season form. Lambert’s side have racked up eight goals in their final four fixtures and Bent signed off on summer duties with a smartly-taken brace against Bundesliga outfit Werder Bremen – aided by the creativity of Charles N’Zogbia, Brett Holman and Stephen Ireland, he could well be set to spoil Big Sam’s party tomorrow afternoon.

Bearing in mind the Hammers managed just seven clean sheets at home in the Championship last season, Lambert’s men will be anticipating goals. With spot-kick duties in his locker, an ownership currently under 3% and a strong set of fixtures to follow, Bent looks the man most likely to produce as the Villains seek to exorcise the ghost of McLeish with a new-found sense of optimism.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Yeah I kind of agree. GKs cheap though....

Pienaar was so strong end of last season though.

Kagawa/Michu too early to tell maybe, but come with lots of goals/assists last year.

I think Park will play a lot, and Nasri was just the cash I had left.

        Rethink a little maybe....?

Kagawa is a great player but will not play in his most effective position now (Rooney will) I would change Kagawa to Valencia/VDV/Lampard and Nasri to Yaya

I'd downgrade Simpson to someone like Gorkss or Demel and use the money to upgrade one of Nasri or Kagawa to someone like Bale/VDV/Lampard. If you do want a Newcastle defender though Colloccini or Santon are better options IMO.

Simpson did me proud last season is why he is there.

Not sure about your MF picks - Bale was poor end of last season, and with Siggy in Spurs who knows what will happen. Lamps always a nice call, but growing old....?

He done well for me too but theres been talk of signing a new right back and Simpson wanting more wages. For the same price I think Colloccini and Santon are better picks but it's your call 🙂 With Tottenahms fixtures after GW1 you need a midfielder from them IMO. As far as i remember both Danny Rose and Assou Ekotto were injured so Bale was playing left back a bit towards the end, but I could be wrong.

This article has ruined me..I want Bent in now, but whilst I can bring myself to ship out Graham...I cannot bring myself to downgrade a Nasri / £8.5m mid to a £6.5m.

    Could do..

Graham and Nasri > Bent and Michu
    ...what do you think?

Not entirely sure it's better business.
Did have Kagawa instead of Nasri, but having watched his touches vs Hannover...he wasn't in the hole at all, he was dropping very very deep....

Repost but I'd love someones opinion on this.... pllleeeease!

Have 0.5m in the bank and currently vermaelen sitting in defence. Can’t decide if it’s worthwhile downgrading to jenkinson allowing torres > rvp gw2? Seems like he’ll be nailed on for starting place til Sagna’s back but not seen a single RMT with him in. Only 0.5% ownership – seems decent way into Arsenal defence or am I missing the simple fact that he’s turd?!

    Team looks like:
    DDG / Federici
    Verm / Ivan / Zab / Hang / Cuellar
    Ramires / VDV / Cazorla / Marveux / Dyer
    Torres / Graham / Tevez

Probably not a good strategy saying that a RMT is your first post. Welcome anyway I guess.

Anyway I guess your team looks good. Not a fan of double Arsenal attack though.

I agree change Podolski or Cazorla. I would change Cazorla to VDV/Lampard/Valenica

Lescott won't play, Ramires won't get points.

Can't see Lescott not starting. Is he really going to go Zabaleta, Kompany, Clichy? I don't think so. And if they play 4-4-2 he's nailed on.

I'm feeling quite confident of a high rank this season. The majority of RMTs are ill informed, total and utter shit and they make me feel like a worldly sage by comparison.

Then again, the lurkers are quietly lurking..the illuminati are gathering any useful information they need from the masses.

    47,169 it is then!
