Having rolled out the Scout Picks on Friday evening, we now turn our attentions to the first Differential article of the new campaign. If you’re new to this, the idea is to highlight certain Fantasy assets with low ownership – typically under 5% – ahead of each Gameweek and wax lyrical over their chances for the fixture ahead. This term we’re concentrating on just one player per Gameweek and, to get the ball rolling, we’ve opted for a proven Premier League goalscorer…

Let’s be honest – last season was a bit of a write-off for Darren Bent. The Villa forward arrived on the back of 41 goals over his previous couple of campaigns but the installation of Alex McLeish to the Villa Park hotseat put paid to the forward’s Fantasy potential, as the midlands outfit attempted to grind out results under the former Birmingham boss. As a result, Villa returned a meagre 37 goals over 2011/12, the second lowest tally in the league and only one more than Stoke; starved of service up top, Bent managed just nine goals before his season was ended in early March due to an ankle injury.

With McLeish now nothing more than a bad memory, Villa fans approach the new season with far greater enthusiasm. New boss Paul Lambert has handed his players a license to attack as he looks to replicate the offensive threat of former club Norwich; the Canaries racked up 52 goals upon their top-flight return under the Scot, a goal haul bettered only by the top six last time round. Already, Bent has been singing the praises of the new man in charge, with a change in tactics set to alter how we assess Villa’s Fantasy prospects for the season ahead:

“He wants us to be really dangerous and create loads of chances. He wants us to be an attacking outfit. He has a philosophy where he says: ‘If we’re going to lose, we’re going to lose having a go’. He wants us to have a right good go at every single team. That’s how it should be. We have attacking players in the team who can cause real damage and he’s told them to go out and do their stuff. It’s certainly going to be a dream for me playing that way as a striker.”

Villa roll up to West Ham for their Upton Park opener on the back of decent pre-season form. Lambert’s side have racked up eight goals in their final four fixtures and Bent signed off on summer duties with a smartly-taken brace against Bundesliga outfit Werder Bremen – aided by the creativity of Charles N’Zogbia, Brett Holman and Stephen Ireland, he could well be set to spoil Big Sam’s party tomorrow afternoon.

Bearing in mind the Hammers managed just seven clean sheets at home in the Championship last season, Lambert’s men will be anticipating goals. With spot-kick duties in his locker, an ownership currently under 3% and a strong set of fixtures to follow, Bent looks the man most likely to produce as the Villains seek to exorcise the ghost of McLeish with a new-found sense of optimism.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

      Tierney is probably the most nailed on Norwich option. Best 4m options elsewhere are Nelson, Demel/McCartney and Clyne.

        No no no, Tierney will probably be benched thanks to Garrido.
        Ryan Bennett is filling in for Whittaker while he's injured.

        So I have concluded there is no 4m option at Norwich, and moved on.

    Federici

    Rafael / Cole / Zabaleta

    Mata / Bale / Pienaar / McClean

    Tevez / Torres (C) / Graham

    Subs: Mignolet / Demel / Nelson / Puncheon

    £3.0m in the bank to improve after GW1 (Van Persie for Torres most likely)

      Yaya or Mata are the two best to pick out of those players. Don't risk anything with manu until you see their attack (so many options). Toure is an obvious pick over Nasri imo. Mata will always get alot of assits, wait until you see hazard play then pick out of the two. Lampard will be playing more of a defensive role i wouldnt get him.

        He was only scoring when Mancini was playing the 3-5-2 system and Silva was not playing so he was handed an attacking role.

          He will play similar to last season and the season before that, but still had a pretty good output over both seasons. I think he's someone you have to keep all season to get the £8m, value and never a decent captain choice. So that's something to weigh up maybe?

      Apparently Mata will be rested in September around the International Break. It's not that he is tired now, he'll prob be sharp compared to players just out of pre-season, it's just that it will catch up with him earlier than the others.

      Mata will start both games. Why would he need rest the season just started and he is one of their key contributors to their attack? Chelsea will want a good start and there is no reason Mata needs to be rested, remember this isnt the middle of the season or any other big games coming up...

      mata and hazard will both likely play both games methinks... it's not like they serve the same purpose, the midfield looks more balanced with the two of them in there. plus hazard's more of a differential now as the selection percentage has halved since the community shield (more people now have both ramires and mata than him -a few weeks ago he was the most selected chelsea mid by miles)

    Lescott - Saylor - Hangeland - Demel - Barnett
    Nasri - Hazard - N'Zogbia - Maloney - Guthrie
    Aguero - Torres - Graham

    3.5m spare
    For:
    Nasri -> Silva
    Torres -> Rooney
    Hazard -> Bale

    However Im keen on getting RVP instead of rooney which would be the best way to draw out an addition 1m from my team with the lowest possible damage.

    I can't decide who to bench for Gorkss in my team right now. Right now I've got Pienaar on the bench but I feel that Everton will score against Manchester United. I'm starting Marveaux right now since I figure early weeks are pretty much the only reason I've taken a punt on him. I could bench Hangeland maybe but a Fulham clean sheet is pretty likely. Everyone else is undroppable.

    Suggestions?

    I know I have to have an MCI defender, but the 'Mancini-head-cave-in' for the season has already started for me...
    Please, some advice would be greatly appreciated on choosing from : Lescott, Clichy or Zab.. 😕

    Really having problems with team selection right now. Currently thinking:

    Federici (Cerny)
    Ivanovic, Hangeland, Zabaleta (Fabio, Cuellar)
    Michu, Mata, Yaya Toure, Noble (Pienaar)
    Torres, Aguero, Petric

    2.0 in bank.

    I'm unsure about:
    Aguero: Seems a better long-term pick than Tevez, but I can't ignore Tevez's performance against Chelsea.
    Noble: Been reading that he may not play, and feel I lack bite in Midfield?

    Thoughts?

      The best advice i can give you is to change aguero to tevez, in the long run you will thank me for this advice. Somehow manage to get him on your squad and you will not regret it.

      Lose Cerny - he won't play. Fabio & Cerny -> Clyne & Jaask

      The rest is fine, but I'd only keep 2.0m in the bank if you are 100% doing Torres -> Rooney in GW2. Otherwise I'd do Yaya -> Bale and Noble -> Dyer

      Awful GK combo. Can't see Cerny getting games so you will be dependant on the Reading keeper for cover. Gotta confess I am a tad concernef about the vulnerability of my keepers too come to that - Jussi and Begovic

      Think Podolski is a brave choice but like it otherwise. I'd go for shitty guthrie for this week only
