With Fantasy Premier League (FPL) live for 2025/26, we’re welcoming back our team of guest writers for the new campaign.

Here, three-time top 200 finisher Lateriser shares his initial thoughts on defenders and puts together a first draft.

Make sure you sign up for the new season to get all the Member-only articles, tools and features to make 2025/26 your best FPL campaign yet!

Lateriser triple Forest

Nothing underpins our society more than the promise of what the future could be.”

An appropriate quote from a book I’m reading right now, Anxious People by Friedrich Bachmann…

The new season is upon us and the game is back, albeit with some new flashy clothes. We’ll save how we feel about those changes for later but let’s get into some early thoughts.

I’ll be focusing this article on defence and talk about broader chip strategy in the upcoming articles.

DEFENSIVE CONTRIBUTION POINTS: PAY ATTENTION TO OPPOSITION TEAMS

FPL Double Gameweek 24: Are any Everton players worth buying?

There are a few thoughts I have about defensive contribution (DC) points.

The first obvious thing is that centre-backs are back! This increases the player pool we have available to us, especially when we’re looking at middling to lower-level opposition.

And depending on the opposition, your defender may have a better/worse chance of hitting the 10 clearances, blocks, interceptions and tackles (CBIT) threshold and securing two defensive contribution points. This could also be an opposition play-style thing and not just an opposition strength thing.

Look at this lovely table from FPL_TomHadley:

triple Forest

So, this means that if your centre-back plays the teams at the top, it isn’t the worst thing for the DC points prospect. Everton and Crystal Palace like to cross a fair bit so centre-halves playing against them will invariably have to make more clearances, hence boosting their CBIT tallies.

The defensive contributions made by left-backs against Mohamed Salah (£14.5m) are chuckle-worthy, not going to lie.

    Kelleher
Van de ven, gvardiol, mykolenko, de cuyper
    Salah, Palmer, saka, mbeumo

Welbeck due to poor minutes and Solanke who hasn’t shown any reason to pick him are poor picks to start with IMO as is Van de Ven, one of the worst defences.

Welbeck played more minutes last season than in any other he's played in. Plus with Joao Pedro gone, he probably has penalties too.

The defensive contributions stuff is interesting but I think people may be overstating it fir defenders a little.

There are lots of tables showing the additional points a defender may have got, sometimes more than 30 points, but wouldn't most of these points have been achieved against stronger teams when the player would probably have been on the bench, so you wouldn't have got the points.

another thought...while it is good to have last years retrospective defcon points, at the time the points did not exist and could not be influenced. With players actually playing the fantasy game, maybe they will be actively chasing defcon points to improve their own standing among their peers? if so, it somewhat devalues the retrospective data.

What stands out is how infrequently (on average) fullbacks hit the 10+ DC contributions threshold.
My conclusion is the attack return scoring CBs will be overpowered. Nathan Collins will be worth his weight in gold!

What's more likely and more consistent is what I am trying to get my head around. Currently going with DefCon approach for def.

      Williams Robinson Lacroix

More likely defensive contributions by some margin, there's a big but in that they will for the most part be counterintuitive to how we've played the game historically regarding defenders i.e. picking based on clean sheet likelihood. For instance the lowest amount of clearances which is the biggest contributor to central defenders in the over the season in total came against some of the worst teams/attacks whereas the most came against Liverpool and Arsenal. So you've got yourself a dilemma of do I pick based on clean sheet likelihood or on least likely clean sheet but most likely defcon?

Regarding full backs, don't write them off entirely. The assist changes might help the attacking ones a little bit and they tend to be much higher volume on the tackles count than CB's, if they are successful in them they will do better than CB's in the BPS which could counteract the defcon points. Some of them do quite well in the Defcon too vs low defensive action teams centre backs - Robinson, Williams, Munoz are all better than a lot of Arsenal and City defenders.

And then you've got the CS likelihood in the first place which is still going to be your bread and butter for defenders. So lots to weigh up. I do quite like the set and forget solid options idea myself, seems a nightmare to try and predict any of it.

Attacking CBs: Milenković, Collins, Gabriel, VVD, Senesi, Schar

      Gvardiol when he's at FB

VVD, Gabriel, Collins and Milenkovic could all get 150+ points.

I'm also going to throw Joe Rodon into the mix as the standout value pick. Although I don't expect him to score multiple attack returns, he will be a magnet for defcon points. Underlying stats from last season (club and country) support this. I genuinely believe Rodon's value will be close to 30.0

I’m thinking what total points score will prove good value over the season. Surely with a 6.0m defender you’re hoping for 160-165. I suppose 150 is okay value for a 5.5m defender/player but not great

Going with this for now. BB week 1, FH week 2 and WC week 3.

    Verbruggen/ Kelleher
    Virgil/ VDV/ DeCuyper/ Wan-Bissaka/ Konsa
    Salah/ Palmer/ Kudus/ Rogers/ Anderson
    Solanke/ Joao Pedro/ Bowen

Always seem to start slowly so like the idea of BB boost and don’t like idea of keeping it for later when it’s harder to build a starting bench even with the ACN free transfers. Basically gives two weeks of free hits and then wild card the problem away once a bit of early form / bargains emerge.

VVD playing under the system against Milan will struggle to keep a clean sheet against long ball transition teams.

Pool played with two number 10s and, like Man City, discovered what happens when you don't have a DM who can stop transitions.

Last season Pool played with a 4 man defensive block but in pre season they pushed full backs further up the pitch and got beat on the counter attack.

Look at who was playing alongside VVD in the 1st half, and how they fielded 4 FBs in the 2nd half... and tell me you're not overanalysing (too) early friendlies

So when Scout writes about pre season friendlies its now called overanalysing 🙂

Your comment shows that you didn't watch the goals or didn't understand what happened.

The goals came from Milan attacking open spaces left by the fullbacks pushing forward.

Pool played with a completely different defensive system that is more prone to leaking goals.

Its really not that hard to understand.

Thoughts on Rodri as an option. He's been in my team since the first draft, he likes to sneak in the odd goal (scored 8 in the season before last) and with the added defcon it should only add to his points tally.

However, for the same price I could go for an I.Sarr or a Kudus which is making me question it.

He is still coming back from a long term injury. So it's a wait and see, probably pick him up when he is fully back. The DC points need 90 minute men.

I think he totally is. First choice in pretty much the best defence in the league over the last 2 seasons. Also very confident on the ball, and the eye test says he's got attacking potential that may not be apparent from the stats as yet.

Only issues are that there are lots of good options at 5.0 and 5.5, and the opening fixture isn't the best for an Arsenal defender.

Yeah I'd love him but I don't think it's going to happen. Think 32m was rejected and we can't afford more than that + Paixao. He's probably got a good chance of taking over from Jimenez this season too. But Chelsea seem keen on a PL loan deal for Guiu so I expect that'll go through

Watkins. Should Wirtz brace or haul in his first match, his price will double rise and he will be very difficult to get. I also believe that I want to watch first game of the season without fear of Wirtz or C Salah hauling, but that's another story.

If Watkins is on pens then I'd call him borderline essential, especially with Villa being near top of fixture difficulty early doors.
Start with Watkins then transfer to Gyok for the GW8 fixture swing.

that's partly why I like Watkins. Offers a gateway to Ekitike, Gyok, Isak

btw the Leeds CB situation cleared up would be v helpful.

Is Bijol nailed from GW2? Is Rodon at risk of Ampadu dropping deeper?

          Should I just go Gudmundsson?

Rodon is 100% nailed and it will be Struijk vs Bijol competing for the other centre back spot. I also think in certain matches Struijk will play left back (he has done this loads in his career) especially the games where set pieces will be crucial. Farke has made it very clear that set pieces are going to be important this season, hence the recruitment of giants (Stach is 6"4).

Could potentially make the transfer at GW7 but no earlier for me.

Arsenal's fixtures GWs 3,4,5,6 = Liverpool, Forest, Man City, Newcastle ... AVOID!

Villa's fixtures GWs 3,4,5,6 = Palace, Sunderland, Everton, Fulham ... Holy Grail.

Was essential in 2023/24 when he scored 19 goals and 18 assists.
Very similar points per minute ratio last season albeit he played 20% less minutes in FPL because of the Champions League priority.

1 abnormal season and a ridiculous overachievement of xA doesn't change the fact he will never be essential.

Logic fail - you can't say someone has never been essential when they have literally been essential before.

" Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa) 228 points. No player could better Watkins’ 37 attacking returns in 2023/24 Fantasy. His all-round style of play has seen him combine 19 goals with 18 assists and finish on 228 points, making him the top-scoring forward. " - FPL site.

          Palmer Fernandes Wirtz Saka
          Watkins Wood Solanke

          4.0 Arias Robinson "Economy Steve"

Planning on playing Petrovic as a set-and-forget until first WC.

One of the best I've seen so far but you might have a captaincy headache some weeks.

              Thanks, mate.

True regarding captaincy, but it's something I'm prepared to embrace. Here's the current plan until GW7 WC:

              Palmer v CRY
              Saka v LEE
              Palmer v FUL
              Palmer v bre
              Watkins v sun
              Palmer v BHA

So lots of Palmer reliance, but he has got the fixtures.

It's about equal between him and Kelleher if you're going with a 4.5.

I'm going with Sels as I think he's worth the extra 0.5, especially with those nice early fixtures for Forest.

I could do Neco > Truffet and Petrovic > Sels, actually? Is that better?

              I'd start Robinson v bha.

Did anyone do the math on Fullbacks/Wingbacks vs Center Backs? Whats the conclusion? will center backs like vvd get more points than kerkez/frimpong (assuming everyone starts every game)

Can’t say, as we don’t know what attacking points they will get. VVD should get more DC points.

Your question assumes too much about past data. Attacking returns of Kerkez/Frimpong are a huge unknown. VVD would have got 22 DC pts if that helps

If you downgraded Ndiaye to La Fee you will be able to upgrade a 4.0 defender to another 5.5 DC defender

That sorts out your bench depth to some extent as La fee does well for DC too

Im confident on Forest. I put their poor last season run in down to exhaustion and nerves. Their standard is their majority of last season, which I don't see why they can't repeat this time round. Milenkovic is current bussed as my GW1 captain!
