With Fantasy Premier League (FPL) live for 2025/26, we’re welcoming back our team of guest writers for the new campaign.

Here, Zophar – who usually holds a weekly Q&A session for us – asks: are you an ‘Elliot Anderson’ type of manager or not?

Make sure you sign up for the new season to get all the Member-only articles, tools and features to make 2025/26 your best FPL campaign yet!

first draft boost

“Is this the real life? Is this just Fantasy?”

Before we get to the usual Q&A structure starting next week, I thought I would just use this week as an opportunity to pen my thoughts on Elliot Anderson (£5.5m). He’s a perfect example of the dilemma currently in my head about how I want to play this season.

To start off, let me give some context.

I put this tweet out last week:

I had two players in mind when writing this, both of whom I was considering as my £5.5m midfielder – Simon Adingra and Anderson. This would be an eighth attacker, whom I would bench most weeks, except for probably a Bench Boost in Gameweek 1. But somebody I could play in the case of a short-term injury/suspension elsewhere

About a thousand people voted and the split was 53/47 in favour of the pick with more variance than the steady eddy, nailed-on, defensive contribution (DC) points accumulator.

This led me to ask myself: why do I play this game and what do I want from this season?

MORE REASONS TO SHOP FOR MORRISONS

I’ll share with you a story from my second year playing FPL.

Manchester United were away to West Brom Albion. It was around the festive congestion time, so rotation was unpredictable. I had Nani in my starting XI, who randomly missed out. So, coming into my starting XI was James Morrison from West Brom. It was just somebody I had picked because he had some attacking potential and was getting regular minutes for the Baggies at just £4.5m.

Morrison proceeded to score an absolute worldie, and I remember very little else from that season except that moment. Not my overall rank, not the transfers/captains I made, the bandwagons I avoided or the effective ownership (EO) picks that I covered.

I remember how I celebrated with my mates, where I was, with who I was and perhaps even who I was at the time. This was about 15 years ago and it is still fresh as the day.

The biggest joys come from navigating through the most difficult constraints. Unpredictability brings joy.

I play Fantasy Premier League because it makes football more engaging for me. It enhances my viewing experience. I play it because I love football. I play it for the dopamine hit I get from my player scoring a goal or assist.

Is watching Anderson get 4-5 points a week going to give me that? Nope. Will it potentially lead to a higher rank, though? Probably yes. But then, is it Fantasy Football for me anymore? The uncertainty of knowing whether it’s going to be a two-pointer from Adingra or a haul is what keeps me playing.

AM I GOING TO ENJOY WATCHING YOU PLAY, MR ANDERSON

FPL Gameweek 9 differentials: Wissa, Cunha + Anderson 2

Now, this isn’t a slight on Elliot Anderson in any way. He registered six assists last season and two goals. So on any given day, he’s still capable of randomly getting three points for an appearance and a clean sheet, two DC points, three points for an assist and some bonus. So you are looking at potentially 8-9 points, which is still tidy for a £5.5m midfielder. However, he had 20-odd shots in the box in 37 games last season, zero of them ‘big chances’. Is watching him going to be fun? Probably not.

Anderson

Above: Elliott Anderson even had a lower xG than two Forest defenders last season

I see a lot of teams on this site and on YouTube/social media even looking to start someone like an Anderson every week. Perhaps that’s the way forward now with this scoring system.

Is this a personality thing? Is it an Analytics FC vs Grass FC thing? I don’t think there’s a right or wrong answer. All I’m saying is take the time to ask yourself why you play this game and how you want to approach this season.

Yes, I definitely want to get a good overall rank, especially after having my worst finish last season. But in the end, what difference is that overall rank at the end of the year going to make to my life? Will I remember it 10 years from now? Probably not. Is Adingra coming off the bench to score a brace, in the most unlikely of occasions, going to be more memorable? Yes.

Again, I’m only using these specific players to illustrate a larger point. Play the game how you want to play it. If you’re in the Anderson camp, that’s absolutely reasonable. Please do not perceive my article as a slight on that. It’s important to know your personality as an FPL manager.

Roald Dahl said, “A little nonsense now and then is cherished by the wisest men.” Have fun playing it whatever way you like.

Great article and perfectly sumps up my way of thinking as well.
Probably the reason why I most always prefer attacking wing backs instead of the safer more boring center backs.

    Theoretically is a lovely word!

    Factually Bellegarde is 5.5m.

    Theoretically:

    He'll do well on DC.

    He'll play in a front 3.

He'll be on some set pieces.

    Is it better to have:
    A) Konsa, Mykolenko, Marmoush (or Wirtz)
    B) Frimpong, Ait Nouri, Anderson

Konsa could really be any 4.5m defender.
Rationale for Marmoush is to cover for no Haaland, but Wirtz and Salah double Pool attack also very tempting.

    Cheers.

Looked at Marmoush as well for some city cover, but tough to overlook the obvious gametime concern.

B bar Anderboring is a super-exciting punt. I've just gone Virgil over Frimpong, RAN and Cucurella. Sels between sticks.

Oh, Wirtz. He's like night and day with Marmoush who I don't really like. In fact I prefer reindeer over marmoush

Cheers. Yes I've also got Sels. I actually currently have Reijnders rather than Anderson but I was wondering about Pep roulette so flipping between the two.

Still unsure on the big at the back vs firepower in midfield. For now I'm on B but with Reijnders.

I won’t criticise people for playing BB in GW1, but people using the argument that it’s a bad chip and best to get it out the way have really not thought it through IMO. Premium players like Haaland and Salah start explosively, so if it’s such a useless chip, why would you sacrifice your opportunity to have those explosive players at the start?

Perhaps BB will work out for people, but you are taking a massive risk to do it.

This could finally be the season where you don't need Salah with wirtz there now which makes it easier to have Haaland and still BB gwk 1.
      Only an idea in motion.

I think this is the one I'm most happy with. It has just a bit of spice by going Haaland over Salah. Nailed starters, no BB to try and start out stronger and then reevaluate on WC and build some team value. No Salah because Liverpool's first 3 fixtures aren't strong enough to justify a Liverpool triple and I have faith in Wirtz being able to match him/be the next big FPL gem.

    Sanchez
    Virgil Murillo VdV
    Palmer Fernandes Wirtz Rogers Anderson
    Haaland Wood
    (4.0 Rodon Dorgu Guiu)

I like this but I’m not understanding the Bruno love with him likely playing deeper now and their fixtures, even with defcon. Am I missing something ?

I don't think it's a guarantee he plays deeper. And his def cons are good, he's on the majority of set pieces, creates a lot. He's just a very reliable option to start the season imo. The pens alone are worth a lot and he is still a chance creating monster regardless of where he plays.

The price point is also nice. You can go up to Saka for 1m, down to Foden, Marmoush, or even a cheaper United option like Cunha to free funds if he's looking the more likely attacking outlet. It's the flexibility having a player at that price and that level of consistency to start the season with that I value. I also am more bullish about United in general. Think they will have a much better season.

That's not what pre-season has shown us so far but yeah Mbeumo hasn't been ready yet. We ultimately don't know yet for sure. Bruno can still deliver even if he plays deeper.

They might even decide that Hojlund/Zirkzee are not worth a spot in the team and play Bruno false 9. I would not put it past them. For the pens, the creativity, I'll pay the extra to start with him and then we can see.

Yeah wouldn't take much notice of preseason lineups that are missing our star signings. Bruno can deliver because he's world class, but he's not going to be racking up goals contributions playing in a disjointed midfield. He's also much more likely to be the assister to the assister there.

We're signing Sesko, so that false 9 theory is a non-runner. Even if we weren't, the system depends on a proper striker - that space behind is already occupied by the two 10s (Cunha and Mbeumo) and the one thing we've seen from Amorim is that he's not willing to change that system.

Double Forest attack against Brentford to start off with is awful.
Combine that with big e.o. Salah and Pedro going off and you've got a 20 pt deficit after 1 week, even against the non-BBers.

        I don't consider Anderson 'attack'. He's a 4 point machine I play every week.

What's wrong with Brentford at home? Great fixture I reckon since they've lost Mbeumo and their manager.

Salah and Pedro are the risks yeah but I have other threats. You gotta pick which players to take on.

        1. Joey Jo-Jo Junior Shabadoo

In 2025, nobody has conceded fewer goals than Brentford away from home. (6 conceded in 10 - 2nd behind Arsenal if looking at xGA).
That included 5 clean sheets, 1 of which was Forest at Forest. Brentford are a nightmare to break down for teams playing at home, especially a team as stodgy as Forest (consistently around 14th based on attacking metrics).
Losing attacking talisman and manager... well I think that's just going to make them focus on defence even more.

Look also at the number of 0-0s Forest are racking up in pre-season. Their defence is always going to be solid but the attack is a no-go imo.

Not sure how relevant that data is when they've lost their manager, their keeper and their starting defensive midfielder.

Kelleher and Flekken had virtually identical PSxG-GA last year so that's no different.
They went out and got the most similar DM to Norgaard available on the market.
Andrews is a continuation of Frank and the footballing approach that's been cultivated at the club over years, it's not like teams magically become rubbish because 1 person disappeared (well not at clubs that are run properly).

Andrews is a set-piece coach with no experience managing a team, never mind one in the Premier League - it would be incredible if they did half as well as they did under Frank, especially after already losing so many key players and Wissa pushing to leave.

I know they did the same with Frank when Smith left, but he had coaching experience at least. Continuity is great, but this is a huge risk on the surface.

I think the mini league makes you look more at what is working for rivals.

So it helps with focus etc.

Cash leagues that charge entry fees are not officially allowed because FPL are not prepared to be held legally responsible for any disputes when cash league organisers take the money and then fail to pay out the promised prizes. This happened a number of times in the past before they were banned.

I’m on my billionth tinker and I’m currently in the “Wirtz can cover Salah” boat -

    Sels

    Gvardiol / Virgil / AWB

    Wirtz / Palmer / Ndiaye / Kudus / Rogers

    Haaland / Wood

Bench: Valdi / Neco / MVDV / Guiu

Tear me to shreds, I’m asking for it!

I am staying in the Salah camp due to one reason: captaincy
I dont trust anyone else near enough. Haaland/Palmer are okay but I still don't trust them and I generally hate picking captains, I everytime choose wrong. Last season left mostly perma-cap on Salah and finished 6k, but I digress...

Draft is good otherwise, nice midfield. Defence maybe a bit too strong, I don't believe Virgil and Gvardiol will be worth it, especially with those teams not generating much CBIT per match due to their high possesion.
