On the penultimate weekend of pre-season friendlies, we’ll see the bulk of the Premier League teams in action.

Crystal Palace kicked things off on Friday with a double-header against Mainz, while Liverpool bookend the kickabouts with two games against Athletic Club on Monday evening.

In between, we should see 16 top-flight clubs contesting warm-up matches.

Arsenal and Chelsea are the odd ones out. The Blues have been on a belated post-season break following involvement in the FIFA Club World Cup, while Arsenal aren’t scheduled to next be in action till next Wednesday.

Here are all the declared friendlies this weekend:

WHAT TO WATCH OUT FOR

FPL Gameweek 1 differentials: Minteh, Munoz + Mbeumo 1 friendlies weekend

SATURDAY

This may be our best indication yet at which £4.0m defenders Burnley boss Scott Parker is going to favour come Gameweek 1. Parker split his squad across two friendlies last weekend, so there were no telltale signs there. Today, however, the line-up looks altogether stronger.

On a similar theme, we will witness Sunderland’s Reinildo (£4.0m) in action for the Black Cats for the first time. Recent captures Granit Xhaka (£5.0m) and Robin Roefs (£4.5m) are straight into the Mackems’ starting XI, too.

Speaking of new signings, Dan Ndoye (£6.0m) is included in Nuno Espirito Santo’s team this afternoon. Fellow summer recruits Jair Cunha (£4.5m) and Igor Jesus (£6.0m) get starts, too.

Newly reclassified ‘defender’ Keane Lewis-Potter (£5.0m) gets an ‘out of position’ run-out for Brentford, meanwhile.

SUNDAY

We will finally see Bryan Mbeumo‘s (£8.0m) Manchester United debut on Sunday, barring a last-minute hiccup. Matheus Cunha (£8.0m) only missed the win over Bournemouth with “fatigue”, so there’s a chance we could see the two big-money summer signings in tandem for the first time.

Everton’s Thierno Barry (£6.0m) could get his first start for the Toffees in the same game.

Elsewhere in the Premier League Summer Series, a newly exonerated Lucas Paqueta (£6.0m) will be hoping to build on four attacking returns in three pre-season friendlies.

Someone who won’t be featuring in FPL next season will likely have his Spurs farewell this weekend. After over a century of Premier League goals and 1,730 Fantasy points, Son Heung-min (£8.5m) is to depart for pastures new.

Both Spurs and Newcastle United will be without their main men up top: Dominic Solanke (£7.5m) through injury and Alexander Isak (£10.5m) due to his wantaway status. Isak is set to return to training on Tyneside, however.

    Thoughts on this team?

    Sanchez (Kinsky)
    Ait-Nouri VVD Udogie (AWB Esteve)
    Rogers Malen Palmer Salah Wirtz
    Welbeck Gyokeres (Obi)

I know I've gone quite top heavy on 2 6m defenders here but the 5m defenders really aren't interesting me that much beyond forest assets, but I'm not convinced about them this season and they've looked pretty shocking at the back in preseason. Naturally can't make my mind up and am tearing up every draft constantly.

      Missing a player. Presumably a 4.0 defender?

Not sure Guiu will start every game, but he's an enabler and you've got a bit of depth. 6 very strong atrackers look good, but you'll pay the price with that weak defence.

Marmoush mainly plays CF/LW. Reijnders is a mid so I don't see him competing with Marmoush. Cherki may take some minutes off him but he is more RW/AM.

I've got Marmoush. Think he's being underestimated. As you say he can play alongside Haaland, and he's a real quality player. Very prolific goalscorer in a team that often chalk up big scores. Even if his minutes are somewhat compromised, I think he's worth having. I reckon City might bounce back from what would have been a great season for most teams last year, but was somewhat underwhelming by their standards.

Just had a look at the transfer page for the first time and the "save changes" feature is already doing my head in, especially since u can't choose multiple teams to filter from

Also is gakpo going to be first choice if pool don't sign another left winger? Or is wirtz going to play there. Never watched the latter play.

    1. Bobby Digital
      • 8 Years

Wirtz has played as a false nine and as a ten thus far in the friendlies. I think he'll mostly play as a 10 for Pool.

Slot may play a midfield 3 of Grav, Mac and Szobo in some of the more difficult fixtures which could see Wirtz move to LW. Ekitike can also play there. Liverpool have so many options that I would expect some rotation.

Its interesting to note (or I thought so at least) that prior to last season, according to Scout, defensive mids mopped up the bulk of the defensive contributions for the other seasons. I don't know if the change last season was down to stylistic changes in the league possibly? Would more low blocks for example mean defenders doing more than before? I only looked at the overall points rather than per 90 so could be low minutes for a lot of the CDM's in the league last season that skewed it. Paulinha was a monster for Fulham by the way regularly near the top on it even though it didn't exist if he is coming to Spurs.

is it fair to say defenders more likely to pick up DC points in tougher fixtures, and mids will be more mixed because of more ball recoveries earnt in easier fixtures?

There was definitely a correlation between easier fixtures and less clearances last season, presumably because those attacks were lacking - least clearances vs in order over the whole season were Ipswich, Southampton, Wolves, Leicester, West Ham, Man Utd. Most were Liverpool and Arsenal but there's some weirder stuff in there like City being a bit further down, Chelsea and Newcastle much further down so the tough side of it doesn't match up so well.

The recoveries I think is probably a style thing looking at it. City and Arsenal had the least recoveries against them presumably because they are heavy on control, low risk etc. Chelsea closely behind them, Maresca being Pep's disciple and all that. Palace, Brentford and Bournemouth high on the most recoveries against fits in with that I think. They are a bit more expansive and do some riskier stuff meaning they'll give up the ball more. Burnley strike me as being quite low risk under Parker so they may not give up many balls to be recovered when they do actually have the thing.

I should caveat it that I think the whole thing could end up pretty random on a game by game basis which tends to be how we approach FPL, much like goals and assists are. In theory certain games 'should' be more likely for certain things to happen but its football, the whole thing is very hard to predict. I'm probably going to pick some, see where the half decent ones are when I WC and then put those ones in for the season and not worry about fixtures.

yea makes sense. i just ask because i remember from ball recoveries in the euros fantasy game last summer, the more dominant sides racked them up. so i can understand why fpl have left recoveries out for defenders in fpl, as it would widen the gap between the big teams and small ones, unlike CBI stuff that narrows it.

and yeah agreed, rotation for defenders might be abit uselss this season. its bad enough missing random goals on your bench, but if you keep missing the +2s with the odd cs thrown in it will be painful

Only thing of note so far is that Stach has (surprisingly) been on set pieces. He will undoubtedly be a DefCon points magnet too.

    N.Williams - Gvardiol - James - AWB - VDV
    Palmer-Rogers-Ndiaye - Gibbs-White - Kluivert
    Haaland - Solanke - Beto

Needs Liverpool attack. If you’re not going with Salah, you need Wirtz.

Also too much in defence, Solanke is crocked and Beto not nailed.

I was thinking that…however I’d like to give Wirtz a few weeks to settle in. If anything I have a gut feeling that Gakpo will start the season strong. Could be a good differential pick. And yes…maybe I should downgrade my defense slightly. Maybe Reece James to Colwill and Gvardiol to a 5.5. Reece James is another gut feeling pick
