The FA Community Shield played out at Wembley on Sunday, where debutants Hugo Ekitike (£8.5m) and Jeremie Frimpong (£6.0m) both scored for Liverpool.

Our Scout Notes article rounds up the key takeaways from a Fantasy Premier League (FPL) perspective.

Premium Members can see official Opta data – including defensive contributions! – from the FA Community Shield via this link here.

CRYSTAL PALACE 2-2 LIVERPOOL

Crystal Palace win 3-2 on pens

  • Goals: Mateta pen, Sarr | Ekitike, Frimpong
  • Assists: Sarr, Wharton | Wirtz, Szoboszlai

EKITIKE + FRIMPONG GOALS

Hugo Ekitike only needed four minutes to score at Wembley on Sunday.

Sharp from the off, the 23-year-old was arguably Liverpool’s best player, as he combined well with Florian Wirtz (£8.5m) for the opener. He probably should have scored a second, too, when he was presented with two decent chances after the break.

Nonetheless, this was a very encouraging debut for 71 minutes, with another start anticipated against Bournemouth on Friday.

“He had a good impact but he is also an example of a player who came, I think, one-and-a-half to two weeks ago, at the end of our Asian tour. So, for me, with only three or four days before the Friday game, it wouldn’t be smart to play him for 90 minutes because… of course we have Federico [Chiesa] but he has not been on the Asian tour as well, so there’s not a lot to replace him with. So, if he gets an injury at this moment of time, that would be a big risk for the Bournemouth, Newcastle and Arsenal games. That’s why I took him off but he had a good game today, that’s for sure.” – Arne Slot on Hugo Ekitike

Another new arrival, Jeremie Frimpong, also got on the scoresheet at Wembley, when he chipped the ball into the top corner when looking to cross.

Despite this, not everything was positive for Liverpool.

LIVERPOOL DEFENCE EXPOSED

One of the key takeaways from this match was Liverpool’s defensive vulnerabilities.

The defensive line was frequently exposed, and it was clear that the system was not functioning as smoothly as Arne Slot would have hoped.

Indeed, Palace were able to equalise twice.

Virgil van Dijk (£6.0m) was particularly poor and at fault for both goals, initially conceding a penalty before being caught out of position for the second.

It might take some time for the full-backs, Frimpong and Milos Kerkez (£6.0m), to properly adjust to their new roles, too.

In his post-match press conference, Slot accepted that his team must improve defensively.

“Now, we are better in creating and getting promising situations than we were, in my opinion, throughout the whole of last season. But the other side is also true, that we have conceded four against Milan, one against the Japanese team, two against Bilbao and again two today. We need to do better defensively.” – Arne Slot

Ryan Gravenberch (£5.5m), meanwhile, wasn’t involved at Wembley because his partner gave birth on Saturday. He’s suspended for Friday’s opener against Bournemouth anyway.

WIRTZ IMPACT/SALAH QUIET

Florian Wirtz’s full passing range was on display on Sunday, as he claimed the assist for Ekitike’s opener with a well-weighted ball.

In a No 10 role (see below), the German schemer passed the ball well, showed good control in tight spaces and generally orchestrated the play for Liverpool.

Indeed, he finished top for chances created (four), final-third touches (33) and passes received in the final-third (22).

He didn’t neglect his defensive duties, either, racking up 10 defensive contributions, just two short of the midfielder threshold.

Above: Liverpool’s average position map v Crystal Palace on Sunday, including Florian Wirtz (no 7)

It was an afternoon to forget for Mohamed Salah (£14.5m), however, who was uncharacteristically poor.

The Egyptian didn’t create a single chance for his teammates, managed just one shot on goal and blasted his penalty well over the bar in the shootout. That’s the second spot-kick Salah has missed in pre-season.

MATETA + SARR ON TARGET

Oliver Glasner decided to name the same starting XI that achieved victory in the FA Cup final against Manchester City, and this decision paid off handsomely.

Jean-Philippe Mateta (£7.5m), who has now netted five goals in pre-season, converted a penalty with Eberechi Eze (£7.5m) on the pitch.

The electric Ismaila Sarr (£6.5m) later scored a vital equaliser, having previously won the penalty.

Mateta also scored in the shootout, whereas Eze’s attempt was saved, positioning the Frenchman as the likely candidate to take Palace’s first penalty of the 2025/26 Premier League season.

Outside of that, Mateta was quiet and only touched the ball 17 times.

Still, he’s in fine pre-season form, with interest starting to ramp up.

In other news, Daniel Munoz (£5.5m) showed plenty of dynamism down the right flank and produced nine defensive contributions (see below). He also created three chances.

Above: Players sorted by defensive contributions (Tot) in the FA Community Shield

Adam Wharton (£5.0m), meanwhile, assisted Sarr’s equaliser and was solid in possession, with three big chances created.

In his post-match interview, Glasner confirmed Marc Guehi (£4.5m) left the pitch late on with cramp, while Daichi Kamada (£5.0m) has sustained a knee issue.

“He feels that it’s not that worse, but he had pain. We will look at him in more detail tomorrow. It looks like it’s not that serious, but it could be that he misses maybe one or two games.” – Oliver Glasner on Daichi Kamada

Crystal Palace XI: Henderson; Richards, Lacroix, Guehi (Devenny 94); Munoz, Wharton (Lerma 85), Kamada (Hughes 29), Mitchell (Sosa 79); Sarr, Eze, Mateta

Liverpool XI: Alisson; Frimpong, Konate, van Dijk, Kerkez (Robertson 84); Jones (Endo 71), Szoboszlai; Salah, Wirtz (Elliott 84), Gakpo; Ekitike (Mac Allister 71)

Who are the nailed guys in the Leeds backline? I think their 4.0's are the best bet mid-long term. Would prefer anyone who was a DC magnet in the Championship last year.

Bogle(may be available for Everton game, doubt), Bijol(suspended 1st game), Rodon, Gudmonsson
GK Perri (may not be match fit for 1st game)
Bogle & Perri. Look for pre game press conf to see what manager says.
But that is the 1st choice defense. With Ampadu sitting as DM in front of it

No idea what the DC numbers would have been in the championship
Perri, Bijol & Gudmonsen are new signings so no Championship record for DC
Bogle gets goals and assists - 5 goals and 1 assist(low) in 3900 mins of prem league
14 goals and 21 assists in 13,000 mins in championship - equivalent of 3.5G and 5A in a prem lge 38 game season
Rodon 1G and 1A in 1200 so not getting any attack points there

          Hope this helps.

I see Esteve in tons of teams and keep telling people Leeds are the better team and the better defense last year and they have a good 9 game start.
Burnely's 16 goals conceded last season was sheer fluke. Burnleys expected conceded goals for last year was 39. Leeds was only 29

Good shout going for a 4m with Leeds

Thanks mate, really appreciate the detail. Seems Rodon nailed at 4.0 might be the go for me, I had seen the underlying xG and it seemed like Leeds were far stronger, also lower owned meaning less likely for a price drop if something goes wrong - surprised more not leaning the same way. I don't need to rotate him in too often as I am going for a pretty strong back 4 that I will rotate; VVD, Munoz, Tark, Murillo. I don't like any of the other 6's right now and I have gone a tad cheaper in the midfield, looking for a couple of price increases until I can jump on Wirtz and Saka in 4-6 weeks.

            Kelleher
            VVD, Tark, Murillo
            Salah, Palmer, Reijnders, Anderson, KDH
            Watkins, Bowen
Dubravka, Munoz, JSL, Rodon. 0.5 itb.

I fully accept that my midfield 3 is a risk, but I want to start Salah and if that turns into a mistake, I will turn him in Wirtz and another premium from whichever of the 5-5.5's looks the worst. Allows me a really strong front 3 that I can rotate and trust to start with as well.

            1. martynteresa
                3 months, 26 days ago

I've got Ekitke, Gyokyores and Watkins up front. Risk 2 new signings but I'll take the shot

SSalah, Gakpo, marmoush, Reijnders (shame everyoen's jumping on him after his goals) picked him out at start.
                Malen other mid

                Then I have
AV, TOT, Brighton, WH and Wolves as my 5 defenders. Hoever 4m at Wolves
Those 5 defenders give me 3 players each game week against bottom half teams except for GW8 & GW10 where I will probably play a Spurs def v Villa & Chelsea in those weeks.

Those 5 defenders, playing 3 each week on rotation give me

34 our 36 games against bottom half table opposition and
10 of the 36 against promoted teams.

Took forever to figure that rotation out but I am happy with it

Yeah ive seen your def structure and its actually partly what made me push for a different looking defense. Not the same theory but the same application in that I can trust 3 of these guys almost every week. Tougher opposition granted, but known commodities with a balance of DC and upside.

If you could afford Agbadou over Hoever is my only thoughts there but not something you really need to force. I love the Gakpo play and that forward line. I think its a very interesting team you have and a structure worth considering.

                  1. martynteresa
                      3 months, 26 days ago

Agbadou would be safer and more DC points. Hoever playing RWB. But zero left in the bank. If Sesko comes in at 8.5 I may be tempted to switch from Gyokyores and do Agbadou.

Then around GW7 when Villas easy fixtures end and Arsenals start it will be a straight swop of 9m from Watkins to Gyokores using 1 transfer

For perspective, some defender DCs in the championship last season:
                Esteve 377
                Mepham 370
                Hume 363
                Rodon 339
                .
                .
                .
                Bogle 262
                .
                Firpo 230
                Struijk 227

Thanks Mate - I think I will lean Rodon over Esteve - JUST. I like Leeds underlying v Burnley losing Trafford who was an absolute stud. Also like that Rodon still had 339 in a team that had 61% of possession across the year. Burnley were 4th with 57%, so I suppose not a mile off but I just think Rodon probably has more chance at CS (rare probably, but some chance).

Gut feel but if something goes wrong with Burnley early, that ownership % of Esteve could easily see him hit 3.9. Thats scarier than any other stat for me.

Palace had an xG of 2.07 while Liverpool had an xG of 1.10.

Mateta and Sarr still going under the radar?

Just a tough first 3, I would like one of them by gw4 but can't warrant having them against 3 of the likely top 6 defensive teams this year. Case to be made that Palace are ready to go from the off but I would prefer to watch and maybe look at gw4 as the week to pounce. Don't mind starting a Palace defender.

I still think they will be a top 6-7 defense long term, but you are right they might be a touch more open next week which does improve fixtures a little bit. Palace boys not for me the first 3 weeks regardless, but love their form.

                A) Dewsbury Hall

KDH is excelllent, honestly you could play him most weeks.

He will likely play as a 10, and he is on set pieces.

Also looking pretty nailed at this point.

I have him and am planning to play him for the first 3 weeks at least

Put this in a comment but interested to see the thoughts on a structure like this. Premium-ish defense, cheaper mids and a strong attack.

                                    Kelleher
                                    VVD, Tark, Murillo
                                    Salah, Palmer, Reijnders, Anderson, KDH
                                    Watkins, Bowen
Dubravka, Munoz, JSL, Rodon. 0.5 itb.

I fully accept that my midfield 3 is a risk, but I want to start Salah and if that turns into a mistake, I will turn him in Wirtz and another midfield premium from whichever of my 5-5.5's looks the worst. Allows me a really strong front 3 that I can rotate and trust to start with as well. Team is intended to not require a WC early, as I will try roll FT's as much as possible with an eye to ARS fixture swing in 6/7. Also wanted the option to BB, but not be forced into a BB. Final thought was trying to catch bandwagons early - I fully understand that I havent captured every price point in this theory, and I am open to dropping say Bowen > Evanilson to ensure I can capture the 6.5m mid point, or the 4.5 def point.

Not feeling the Bowen thing on this site. JSL I like especially with Wolves 1st 12 games.
I see Fullkrug as the option now that Bowen is re classified as a forward. Bowen loses 20 of last season points. CS & Goal points

Fullkrug 12G 8 A in 2400 mins in bundesliga. FPl is a 3400 minute season.
He has a track record of assisting as well as goals.

So I can quite easily see them both ending up with similar assist and goal counts
Fullkrug 2m less for upgrading MF maybe

Bowen would have only lost 5 points as a forward (188 instead of 193) if he got exactly the same returns and DCs this season:

Yeah that was something I have considered. I think Fullkrug is a good option but is he really anywhere near as nailed as Bowen? He is also injury prone, getting on in age and not as talismanic as Bowen.

I can go Fullkrug, which would give me enough money to look at upgrades elsewhere, but the 6.5 mids are a bit meh outside of Sarr, and I can't quite get to the guy I would want in Wirtz without another sacrifice elsewhere.

I think with those 3 mids the defence feels like it should be stronger even with 0.5 ITB
You don’t want to plan transfers but Bowen to Evanilson could be good. Fixtures after 1 look good if you could go with him from the start and save the transfer.

Thanks for the response. I like Evanilson and I have been tossing up him and Bowen (and Thiago and Fullkrug, to lesser extents). I know Bowen is boring but his form under Potter was really good and I think he can carry that forward. Will keep tossing and turning on Evanilson who has really strong xG which I like, though less important for forwards as only 1pt between a goal and assist.

As for the defense, I much prefer the 5.5's at their price than the 6.0's at theirs for now. This will change by gw6 or so but I will hold and roll trades ready for that. I like Murillo more than Milenkovic who outperformed xG last year and isnt a DC or BP darling. I like Tark because he underperformed xG last year and his points per start were very strong, though Myko injury may hurt him a touch. VVD most nailed 6.0 and only one I trust to start with, 3 decent matchups defensively in the first 5 is JUST enough though I would love to have RAN if I knew he was nailed. Munoz I think CP will start hot, he's nailed, best attacking fb in the prem (my opinion) and they can get clean sheets. Up against tough defenses early maybe limits his attack a touch, but I think they get a clean sheet in the first 3 (NFO) and then their fixtures run nicely.

I don't know if they are objectively 'the best' defenders, but at the price, nailed, and their fixtures I am pretty happy with. gw3 will be the only week in the first 6 or 7 that I have only 2 good options - and I have VVD for a reason as a 6.0 I should be able to play him every week should I need too.

I do appreciate the feedback, will consider Evanilson instead of Bowen and see where it lands me.

Ok another draft. Defence very expensive but mids and forwards look ok too - it’s the bench that suffers. Not locked on the Pedro pick. Fear of ownership is not the best way to make decisions. Thoughts and any better 4.5 mid pick?
