Defensive contributions. DC. “DEFCON”.

FPL’s game-changing addition is the talk of pre-season. Perhaps there’s method in all the madness, or perhaps there’s simply no beating the old-school premium defender.

First, let’s run the numbers from last year.

HOW ‘DC’ POINTS AFFECTED THE OVERALL RANKINGS LAST SEASON

The below table comes from a great Fantasy Football Scout tool, available for Chief Scout members, which recalculates all the FPL 2024/25 points based on DC points, the bonus changes and any extra assists:

There is a very notable impact on the overall defensive rankings as a consequence of defensive contributions.

Josko Gvardiol (£6.0m), last year’s top-scoring defender, would have subsequently dropped to fourth in the rankings.

Meanwhile, the five best defenders for contributions all feature in the top 10 overall scorers.

It’s safe to say that defensive contributions present huge potential value across an entire season, but the real question is whether they still make for good picks across shorter periods. Do they still provide enough upside?

There are, of course, no guarantees that this year’s results will directly correlate to last year’s data. Teams can set up differently and there’s a wealth of new transfers alongside a couple of managerial changes. But it’s all we have to go off for now, and the results definitely indicate that certain players thrive more than others.

Two graphics stand out most crucially.

      Konsa, VdV.

Take the value. But I don't like either that much. Konsa was absymal for DCs last year and I don't know about Spurs defense and how durable it'll be plus VdV is injury prone.

There's a lot less talk about penalty takers this year for some reason.

I think they could be really valuable again and there are some cheap mids/fwds that take pens that I'm not seeing in pretty much anyone's teams.

    Paqueta, Kluivert, N'Diaye, JSL

I like Paqueta a lot for this reason. He also got 12 DCs last season and is playing at 10. Kluivert could also be great as we saw last season but there's a bit of injury risk about him. N'diaye I like a bit less because Everton are very defensive and don't win many pens but he's a decent fixtures play.

    1. Letsgo!
      • 9 Years

But paqueta is really not nailed plus to be honest i think bowen is the better pen taker

Paqueta has scored 9/10 career penalties whereas Bowen has scored 7/10, so you think wrong

    2. Deulofail
      • 9 Years

12 DCs as in he got 12 points from DCs or he got 2 DC points 12 times?

      1. Deulofail
        • 9 Years
        3 months, 26 days ago

12 DC points would be 0.44 per start. Not great but could be a clincher in a decision between him and someone else.

However, I'm guessing he got most of his 6 DC returns when he was playing a more defensive role? Transfermarkt puts him at DM in 5 of his starts last season & CM for 4. So maybe he got closer to 0 DC points from AM than 0.44? He also got -0.3 YC points per appearance, so we might be in the negative points now. I would say ignore DC points for Paqueta. If his appeal is playing AM, then just consider his potential attacking output.

12 points from DCs - it's not a reason to go for him but it is a slight edge if you're on the fence between some picks.

Kluivert is surely one to watch but hard to start season with him.

I'm keeping some money aside to bring Kluivert in at some stage. If he doesn't gain fitness soon, probably look at Evanilson as their fixtures look promising.

Penalty takers this year are either expensive or rely too heavily on them, especially the likes of Paqueta and Ndiaye. Kluivert had his purple patch but tailed off towards the end of last season and we don't even know if JSL gets pens yet.

How does Everton set up with Grealish? Ndiaye to make way? KDH to drop back? Dont think KDH would have gone there if he wasnt assured starts and in a position he excels in.

    1. Mother Farke

      - Grealish LW
      - Ndiaye CAM
      - Interchangeable.
      - KDH deeper as an "8" as noted in The Athletic. Garner missing out.
      - Everton want a RW, too. Dibling and Fatawu linked.
      - McNeil perma benched.

£50m is an outrageous figure for an injury-prone attacker, on the wrong side of 30 with highly-publicised atitude problems, who doesn't provide goal contributions

        Amad could be Rice

        Will look further at 5.5m

I don't think there's much between Eze and Sarr, it's pretty much the rub of the green week to week.

Yeah, I've really got 2/3 midfielders and the other two forwards to decide on.

The alternative is Bruno with a 4.5m forward but I'm leaning towards the 3-4-3 now.

Digging more routes to points from Defenders
    4-4-2?
Long ago I played the fantasy Yahoo EPL game, it had more opportunities for points from defenders, similar to this system now.
The potential to get 140 to 170 points from a 5.0 to a 6.0 defender...
as opposed needing to spend 6.5-8.0 on a Mid for similar (potential) results is in theory, and due to past experience very tempting
"Big" at the Back? Anyone else?

    Currently:
    Sels (Dubravka)
    VVD-Murillo-Tarko-Collins (Esteve)
    Palmer-Salah-Wirtz-PM Sarr (Malen)
    Watkins-Pedro (Guiu)

It's very difficult to guess before we really see how the defensive contribution points impact the game. With the way they are awarded I can see a situation where many players end up on 8-9 and very short of getting the points

    2. Russell
      • 12 Years

I am tempted too, have Milenko, Cucurella and Tarko currently and not planning on transferring barring injury.

Considering VVD or Collins as well, in place of Reinjdeers/Kudus.

I think I will stick to 3 for the moment until a clear cheap enabler comes to the fore.

Another shot at BB1 draft, FH2, should have decent fixtures for GW3 so bank the transfer and then GW4. Opinions appreciated
(I'll not go with BB if Dubravka is ruled out)

    Kelleher Dubravka
    VDV Neco Diouf Konsa Rodon

I see the attraction in playing BB, if you can cope with 14 players then it's fine.

Otherwise it is a gw1 risk.

    Hi all,

Thinking of the below time and BB in GW1. Obviously the big point is no Salah..... Thoughts?

    Sanchez
Milenkovic / van de ven/ diouf
    Gakpo / wirtz / palmer / dewsbury-hall
    Haaland / Watkins / Bowen

Dubravka / Sarr / konsa / de cuyper

for me a bit expensive in the attack, which hurts the midfield.

I think the midfield looks fine depending if that is 6.5m Sarr on the bench (not doing the maths)

could maybe do Bowen to Fullkrug, which releases 2m for the midfield.

        It's Spurs Sarr, not Palace

I'd rather just change your 5.0 mids into a 5.5 and a 4.5 and go for someone like Anderson or Reijnders

So Munoz was at 9 DEFCON's against Liverpool. Might be a regular set and forget pick. Can score against anyone and the same applies to de Defcon contributions, last season would have had Defcon 7 times out of 37 starts, combined with 10 G+A is a return every other game. Add the 11 CS's to that and he is really a pick that I like for every game. Was not in my draft tough..

Yeah, very strong pick. Might not start with him but will definitely bring him in within the first month or so.

Thinking of going without Salah for the first few games...would you go
    A) Wirtz & Ekitike or
    B) Wirtz & Gakpo

      A has more flexibility

Why do you need two Liverpool? Just go Wirtz.

Have you considered Wirtz and Frimpong plus change to use elsewhere?

Down to the last 2 spots in my team...

    A. Anderson and Watkins
    B. Wirtz and Thiago
    C. Paqueta and Ekitike
    D. Semenyo and Joao Pedro

    Thanks in advance!

A is boring but probably correct.

This. B with Fullkrug instead of Thiago could work.

Fullkrug is also in my thoughts for a good first week fixture. He's definitely in better form.

Rogers + Wood or Anderson + Watkins?

Wouldn't go for Wood with 5 of 7 0-0 in the friendlies for Forrest

I will most definitely play 3-4-3 without Salah or Haaland. Just can't decide for a defender structure. Currently without any 6.0 defender after Liverpool yesterday (VVD went out) with 0.5 ITB to upgrade if needed.

    5.5 - 5.0 - 5.0 - 4.0 - 4.0 for now

    Any sugggestions or same problem?

Close to the final product. Hopefully!!

FH in GW3 because most of my players have a crap GW3 fixture.
Also want to have Bruno and Haaland for that week.
Takes out the Arsenal and Liverpool fixture.

    Vicario | Dubravka
    Aina | VdV | Guehi | Konsa | Rodon
    Salah | Gakpo | Palmer | Saka | Rutter
    Watkins | Raul | 4.5

Still undecided on Vicario/Sels and Raul/JSL.

    But yes that's basically it.

Thanks in advance. Would appreciate some thoughts!!..

Great team. Would do Vicario to Sánchez (or Sels if you like). Don't fancy the Spurs double up in defence.

Seems like a waste of money on Vicario. Would prefer a 4.5 GK, though Sels could be worth it. At least then you could get one of the 5.5 Forest defenders for Aina, which is a bigger upgrade than a 4.5 GK to 5.0 GK imo
