With Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) nearing, our pundits are giving us their all-important team reveals!

Here, FPL Milanista – who has three top 5k finishes in the last five seasons – explains why he’s going with Arsenal’s premium midfielder.

Make sure you sign up for the new season to get all the Member-only articles, tools and features to make 2025/26 your best FPL campaign yet!

The 2025/26 Fantasy Premier League season is shaping up to be one of the most dynamic we’ve seen in recent memory, not just because of player transfers and fixtures.

It’s because of a major rules tweak that’s already changing the way we look at our squads: defensive contributions (DC).

DEFENSIVE CONTRIBUTIONS – A CHANGE IN FORMATION?

FPL Gameweek 9 differentials: Jota, Martinelli + Murillo 2

In short, defenders will get rewards more fairly for their real-life work. This might just flip the FPL meta on its head.

Historically, defenders in FPL have lived or died by clean sheets, with only the attacking full-backs offering consistent value.

But this year, blocks, interceptions, and other defensive contributions are actually rewarded, making even centre-backs more viable.

This change significantly raises the floor for defenders. Suddenly, you’re not just relying on a clean sheet or the odd goal from a corner – you’re getting steady returns from solid performances.

As a result, I think we’ll see many FPL managers pivoting to a 4-4-2 or even a 4-5-1. These are formations that FPL managers have drifted away from in recent years but could now offer optimal balance and points potential.

Personally, I’m seriously weighing the value of a strong fourth defender versus a mid-priced forward. Right now, I’m on a 3-5-2, but the more I look at defensive value (especially among £4.5–£5.5m defenders with high CBRIT potential), the more tempted I am to switch.

BENCH BOOST IN GAMEWEEK 1?

FPL 2025/26 first draft team reveals: DC magnets + Bench Boost

With double the chips this season, the temptation to use a Bench Boost in Gameweek 1 was and is still very real. There’s a certain logic to it: everyone’s fit, fixtures are fresh, and we’ve had time to tinker.

However, we have been gifted a few incredible budget-friendly players in Marc Guiu (£4.5m) – a potential starting striker at a bargain-bin price – and Martin Dubravka, who could/should be a starting £4.0m goalkeeper. They are too good to ignore in any draft we make, and the fact that we are not sure of their fitness to start the season adds ambiguity. It is a valid reason to shelve the Bench Boost for now, unless one is prepared to ignore such minimum price gifts and build a strong 15-man squad with an eye to Wildcarding early and fitting them in sooner than later.

GAMEWEEK 1 TEAM REVEAL

Now, onto the individual picks.

FPL pre-season: Malen + Watkins again, Xhaka debut, secretive Man City 2

Don't see many people talking about Chelsea defence without Colwill? I'm thinking of switching Sanchez to Sels as a result.

Last question and gtg, Haaland is in the team no matter what. Which option?

    A) 3-4-3 with Gyokeres-Ekitike-Palmer
    or
    B)3-5-2 with Salah-Joao Pedro-Minteh

If you have haaland then u gonna captain him. Then you can’t have 14m player not captained. That’s just not sustainable. The rest of your team will suffer. But of the two options in isolation I like B

      1. aguerodontblankonme
        • 9 Years

Sure can, and if you prefer B in isolation, then I definitely can have them both and captain whoever I prefer. In isolation A should be better.

    Verbruggen (Dubravka)
    Williams Vdv Konsa Esteve ________
    Salah Palmer Rogers Reijnders Kdh
    Haaland Larsen ________

I'm pretty much set on this team. Just down to 2 options
    A) Dorgu + Fullkrug.. Gives me a full 15 and will rotate these 2 /play both if Reijnders/Kdh/Larsen flop

    B) 6/5.5 defender(+0.5) and Guiu..
Will play 3 -5 - 2 or 4-4-2 or even 4-5-1 most weeks with Guiu permabenched

    Really struggling with this

    1. Mino Raiola
      • 9 Years
      4 months, 5 hours ago

See my reply to the post above. You struggle cuz u essentially have spent the budget on haaland and salah. All players start on 4,5 mill, which means you have spent the equallent sum of 4 premiums on 2 spots. It’s viable to spend twice as much as another if you captain, but if you don’t you are just not optimizing the budget.

    A: Kudus, Porro, Murillo
    B: Wirtz, VDV, Konsa

All would likely be starters for most games.

Reallly quite tempted to go with a lighter defence for this attack which can play most weeks.

    Verbruggen (Dubravka)
    Williams Porro Konsa Guehi Esteve
    Palmer Wirts Gakpo Ndiaye (Potts)
    Haaland Watkins Pedro

    Thoughts lads?

Alternative is taking Gakpo out for Reijnders and upgrading Guehi (Hoping he moves tbh but if he doesnt, thats also ok)

Since GW15 last season when Neco and Anderson started playing regularly. Also new arrival Milenkovic settled in the Nuno system.

    Anderson - 24 games - 16 CBIRT + 2G + 3A + 9CS
    Murillo - 22 games - 15 CBIT + 1G + 7CS
    Milenkovic - 24 games - 14 CBIT + 5G + 1A + 8CS
    Neco - 24 games - 12 CBIT + 1G + 3A + 8CS

    Points from CBIT/CBIRT+G+A+CS
    Milenkovic - 93 points > 3,87 ppg
    Neco - 71 points > 2,95 ppg
    Murillo - 64 points > 2,90 ppg
    Anderson - 60 points > 2,5 ppg

The nerds took all the data available with zero context and Murillo is the man according to them.

Let's ignore the first sentence and focus on the second one.
Please explain how Milenkovic got CBIT in 1/14 prior to GW15 and then 14/24. Won't hold my breath, although you could just copy the first 2 sentences in my OP.

      2. mookie
        • 12 Years

I'm not saying he settled exactly in GW15, but it did take some time as Nuno's system is different to most managers. Different CM and LB do impact the stats of the CBs.

        Anderson completed 0/14 90' prior to GW15 and a 2/14 75'+. Started every game afterwards, 60'+ every game. 20/24 75'+
        Neco 3/14 90' and 4/14 75'+ prior to GW15. Started every game afterwards, 60'+ every game. 23/24 75'+

    Porro Tarkowski Richards (Anderson Rodon)
    Salah Palmer Saka Gakpo KDH
    Watkins Fulkrug (Guiu)
    Plan: GW2 Saka (c), GW3 Saka-> Bruno (c)

    Draft 2:

    Saka Bruno Writz Gakpo Palmer
    Watkins Evanilson (Guiu)

      Frimpong, Porro, Munoz (Dorgu, Reinildo)
      Marmoush, Saka, Palmer, Wirtz, Reijnders
      Watkins, Gyokeres (Guiu)

Much happier with the attacking full back defence over defcon specialists.

What's the reason for Guiu in most squads? Just bench fodder? Not convinced he's going to get many minutes and surely want a starter for that 8th attacking slot?

Definitely don’t need a starter for that 8th attacking slot!
