Our latest Scout Notes focuses on the match between Nottingham Forest and Brentford, as Chris Wood (£7.5m) got his season up and running in impressive style.

WOOD HAULS

While the statistics may suggest a close match, Forest were by far the better team at the City Ground.

After a quiet pre-season, the Tricky Trees raced into a 3-0 half-time lead, courtesy of two goals from Wood and one from Dan Ndoye (£6.0m).

Wood, who converted just under 30% of his shots in 2024/25, demonstrated his clinical prowess once more.

His first goal, a looped effort from a corner, was followed by a calmly slotted finish.

The Kiwi striker has clearly picked up from where he left off last season, with some decent fixtures still to come, particularly in Gameweeks 3, 5 and 6:

Nuno mainly used his tried and trusted on Sunday, but there was a spot for Ndoye, the £36m winger from Bologna.

He was one of Forest’s top performers, rising brilliantly to power a header home.

“Dan played well today, he stuck to his defensive tasks which is always important, but he is so talented and honestly, I think he has much more to give.” – Nuno Espirito Santo on Dan Ndoye

GIBBS-WHITE + ANDERSON SUPERB

Morgan Gibbs-White (£7.5m) and Elliot Anderson (£5.5m) were at the heart of Forest’s victory.

Gibbs-White delivered a lovely ball into the box for Ndoye to head home, as he created three chances for his team-mates.

As for Anderson, his interception turned into a wonderful assist for Wood.

Pulling the strings from a deeper role, he also racked up three shots and 11 defensive contributions (DefCons), just one short of the midfield threshold.

“Elliot [Anderson] is like Morgan [Gibbs-White] in that they see things that aren’t always there. As soon as the ball dropped to him I wanted to get in behind, he split the defence unbelievably for me to put away my second.” – Chris Wood

Overall, it was a super start for Nuno Espirito Santo, who still has James McAtee (£5.5m) and Omari Hutchinson to add to his Forest squad.

THIAGO ON PENS

Brentford at least restored some pride in the second-half, but this was a poor performance for Keith Andrews in his first match in charge.

New signings Caoimhin Kelleher (£4.5m) and Antoni Milambo (£5.5m) started, while Jordan Henderson (£5.0m) was on the bench.

For significant parts, however, Brentford appeared disorganised and bereft of confidence, as they conceded four big chances, the most of any team in Gameweek 1 so far.

The only real positive they can take ahead of next week’s clash against Aston Villa is the goal.

Igor Thiago (£6.0m) only managed 20 touches, but he did wipe out the Forest clean sheet from the penalty spot, sending it straight down the middle for his first Premier League goal.

It will be interesting to see what he can offer in FPL this season after an interrupted start to his Bees career following a meniscus injury in 2024/25.

Yoane Wissa (£7.5m), meanwhile, wasn’t in Brentford’s matchday squad at all, having recently been linked with a move to Newcastle United.

“It means a lot to me – I want to score more goals for them. I want them to keep singing my name. I feel happy with my first goal, and I hope I score more for the club. It was a difficult game, a difficult first half, but we kept going. I think we did well in the second half and found the press.” – Igor Thiago

WHY DAMSGAARD MISSED OUT / SCHADE RETURNS

Mikkel Damsgaard (£6.0m) was not in the Brentford squad following the birth of his baby.

In his absence, Milambo was deployed in the No 10 role, but it was only after he was substituted for the returning Kevin Schade (£7.0m) – who was brilliant by the way – that Brentford began to exhibit a greater attacking threat.

“There’s an element of some players playing catch up with not having a fluid pre-season. Damsgaard came out of the team with his wife giving birth. That was a little knock. I won’t shy away from the fact it wasn’t good enough in the first half. It doesn’t define us and it won’t define us.

“Kevin [Schade] brought us the threat we didn’t have in the first half. There’s a journey for a few of the players coming back from injury. Kevin is one of those players but we’re building him and he’ll be a huge player for us.” – Keith Andrews

Elsewhere, Sepp van den Berg (£4.5m) produced 14 DefCons from a centre-back role, something we discussed in pre-season, while Ethan Pinnock (£4.5m) missed out with a knock.

Gutted with the way we conceded. Didnt saliba push into the keeper?having said that,
we lacked fangs in the final third but showed some attacking prowess.

    Still gutted tho

An experienced keeper would have milked that foul. A shimmy forwards and a chest clutching fall wud have done the trick. He tried stayin on his feet and got played.. unfortunate but he will mature

    A) lacroix
    B) burn

I fear for palace defense with guehi gone and malick thiaw plus botman threath to burn’s starts

Lacroix I think is very nice. However, I would rather just pay 4.5 for Richards or 5.5 for Munoz if I was going CP (who look the real deal).

I don't think there is a perfect 5.0 at this stage - Romero and Neco are nice short-mid term but long term fixture changes and rotation respectively. I would either go a rotating 4.5 in that slot, or pay up for the 5.5's who look really good.

      c) Think about Ballard for Sunderland 4.5mill. Looks to have a decent keeper behind him. Attacking returns potential and defensive contributions potential. GW1 might not have been a fluke although i would not expect those points total again for him.

The thing is, it's not worth a FT this week for Reijnders imo. Even a 0.3 rise he is underpriced if he's nailed in that side. Worth another look this week and will happily pay 5.6-5.8 after gw2 for him.

Yes. But money is money and if you can buy anything with cheaper price than with higher price, it's usually better. Another rise is to be expected and when it's time to sell him, I prefer getting money itb. Starting with Wirtz and not having him was a mistake in hindsight. Some points and one transfer lost, but these things do happen.

I do not trust Sunderland DEF mid-long term so I wouldn't WC in their keeper. I don't like that midfield - price points are concerning. FWD's are sound and well covered prices but I think given you only NEED to play 1 FWD each week and you are forced to play a minimum of 3 mid's, purely formation wise, I would be looking to inject a little bit of money into that midfield and only run one of Ekitike/Wood.

I like the Salah/Haaland idea but team balance there is concerning!

I would go Porro since he is more likely than Agdabou to jag some attack and likely they run a back 5 against City. I am pretty sure both teams will concede, and both have decent change at DC so I would take Porro just for attack. BOU are a bit messy atm but their attack looks as good as ever.

        1. martynteresa
            3 months, 19 days ago

Inclined to agree but Agbadou is an unnoticed DC beast. Think he had 18 DC points in 16 games after he joined in January. But yeah think I will do Porro

            Got Reijnders in at start.

Interesting to see how Oscar Bobb 5.5 (assist) does over the opening few games. Savinho replacement. Broken leg all last season.
Kept a reliable starter in Marmoush out of the starting 11 and even when Marmoush came in it was to replace Doku with Bobb getting the full 90

Huge DC beast, not unnoticed here trust me! I have no issue if you go Agbadou, im probably 60/40 on Porra, maybe even 55/45.

Great shout on Bobb. As always there is never a bad time to early WC, we have all played those seasons where we get it blatantly wrong early and there are a heap of cheap bandwagons which allows us to get Salah and Haaland both in early. WC is there to either fix mistakes, or catch a huge fixture swing on multiple elite teams.

              1. martynteresa
                  3 months, 19 days ago

Happy with my team. Got price rise on Reijnders and Ekitike
2 mids didnt start yesterday, Marmoush (got 30mins) and Malen benched (6mins?)
Villa set up with 1 less offense player yesterday for NC so going to see if malen starts getting the starts.
Watching Bobb same for a few weeks. If Bobb is getting starts and malen isnt then its a straight 5.5 one transfer swop
Keeping an eye on Josh King too. Watched the Brighton Fulham replay about an hour ago. He looked really good in the 10 spot.
Happy with De Cuyper from that game too. Shame riley got the pen as Cuyper scored 10 pens in the last few seasons

keeping my wildcard for GW13/14 when there is a huge fixture swing. Check the fixtures to GW19 for Liverpool, Man U & City & NC. So many games against the promoted teams. At the same time Chelsea start another run of good games. So it will be load up with players from the top teams time.

Yep, as long as you have say 12-13 of your 15 going okay at the moment, or at least in their expected role's, then you are good to avoid a WC.

It may depend on the opposition and whether they attack the wing that Cash (or other full back) are defending. The more attacks the more likely DC will accumulate.

                Bias alert!

                (1) Semenyo- Liverpool was cruising and coach pulled his best wing men. Things got messed up quickly thereafter. Semenyo still sucks. He's Traore after that memorable Man City game.
                (2) Wood - he is my Pukki Party. The minute I get him, he becomes the Sad Pukki.

                I have neither, of course

Semenyo is one of the valuable assets last season after Salah.
Nailed onn . Play mostly 90 minutes.

Can be a bit frusrtrated with him but his numbers quite good.
13.94 XGI, more than Kluivert the penalty taker and almost the same as Saka : 14.65

Saka got that figure in 20 starts vs Semenyo's 36. There is something to be said for being nailed and not being injured, but just be careful comparing full season figures vs per game figures so that it doesn't sell a certain narrative.

All that said, Semenyo is still a great option, even at 7.5 he would be a good option.

Roll. I don't see any crazy fires to put out here. Unlucky on the Konsa RC. Diouf looked attacking. Palmer worth another 2 weeks at least. Bruno you will want v Burnley in 3 and his underlying was nice.

If this was my team I would roll it so easily.

That cheers me up. I've been a bit despondent with all the points I didn't get from players I took out of my draft on the final day, but this shows me my 70 points well exceeds the content creators and their sheep, so I'll take that!

After watching all the key games this weekend, what’s your general take on the premiums?

                Haaland, Saka, Palmer & Salah.

I’m not sure this is going to be a season where you blindly Captain Salah, the goal masked a poor performance for me & they have other options in attack.

Haaland looked the focal point again & if City are to return, he’ll be their main man.

Saka & Palmer were poor, Palmer has been flag in FPL in 2025 but somehow gets a pass, is he even essential? Arsenal to a man were dire yesterday.

                What are you thinking?

Bruno seems to not be worth it this year when Cunha & Mbuemo looked lively at 8m, Sesko at 7.5 could also soften the need for him.

Haaland was pretty good, Salah not so much. Saka and Palmer were poor and have been poor for last few months now, wouldnt go near them.

Double up on Haaland and Salah is a decent strategy which I may look at but going to stick with what I have for couple of more GWs.

I had no Salah and Haaland C for about 2 days then the EO fear put me off. On deadline day I thought why do I have Palmer and Pedro against Palace and remembered EO then decided Wood at home to Brentford was too good a fixture and next 6 so did Wood instead of Pedro. TLDR I thought Haaland would be good and didn't feel great about Salah Palmer or Pedro so sometimes better to forget EO and go with gut.

I hear that, I was on my BB so wanted to cover the EO threats but swerved Pedro, just thought what happened yesterday could happen so took him out for Mayenda & spread the funds, did have Wood (but took him out) because I was worried he wouldn’t keep it up but he proved that wrong.

I don’t fear Palmer and didn’t really want Salah but you were sort of chained to them for the first week (well I felt that)

I regret my late switch from Haaland back to Salah. Saka was quiet but should come good; I'm less confident about Palmer - he's one of only two assets that never left my draft (Rinjders being the other). If I started again, I'd probably figure out a squad that has Haaland and Salah and drop Palmer.

Dan Ballard got 13 actions home to West Ham, think he’s the first gem to emerge with the goal threat he carries.

Need Leeds CS minimum with Perri Stach Piroe triple up. 73 on BB with only 5pts from 3/4 bench that was almost 13 if Brighton held out for CS

Why didn't you use it in GW1?

What’s best out of those, I went BB1:
                A) WC2, FH3 (avoid LIV-ARS and go x3 MUN vs Bur)
                B) FH2, WC3/4 (one/two more weeks of info but lower score)

Do you have to use a chip this week? Is there an option C - no FH and just WC in 3/4?

Neither, too soon to WC and FH when we've just had one gameweek.
