Bruno Fernandes (£9.0m) failed to convert a penalty as Fulham came from behind to claim a well-deserved draw against Manchester United.

Here’s what we saw at Craven Cottage.

BRUNO MISSES PEN

Bruno Fernandes missed a crucial penalty on Sunday, as he blazed his spot-kick over the crossbar.

The Portuguese had previously bumped into referee Chris Kavanagh, but insisted the official was not to blame for his miss.

“I was upset. As a penalty-taker, you have your own routines, your own things that you do. It upset me because the referee didn’t apologise. That is what triggered me in that moment, but that’s not the excuse for missing the penalty.” – Bruno Fernandes

Bruno netted two penalties in pre-season, suggesting he will continue as United’s primary penalty taker. However, this is a situation to keep an eye on, especially considering Bryan Mbeumo’s (£8.0m) proficiency from the spot.

Away from the penalty, which was awarded when Calvin Bassey (£4.5m) threw Mason Mount (£6.0m) to the ground, it wasn’t the most productive of afternoons for Fernandes, as he created just one chance from a deeper midfield role (see image below).

He did, at least, provide defensive contribution (DefCon) points, which essentially cancelled out his penalty miss.

CUNHA’S CHANCES

United started brightly in west London, with Matheus Cunha (£8.0m) firing over and hitting the base of the post within the opening minutes.

Bernd Leno (£5.0m) later made a brilliant one-on-one stop to deny the Brazilian.

It means Cunha has registered seven shots across the first two Gameweeks, the most of any United player:

Cunha and his teammates clearly need to become more clinical, but the chemistry is building ahead of next week’s home clash with newly-promoted Burnley.

United carried less of an attacking threat in the second half, but they did go ahead in the 58th minute, when Leny Yoro’s (£4.5m) header cannoned in off Rodrigo Muniz (£5.5m).

The Frenchman’s header arrived from an Mbeumo corner.

SESKO “NEEDS TIME”

Benjamin Sesko (£7.5m) has now been a substitute in two consecutive matches.

He made his entrance in the 53rd minute on Sunday, prompting Mount to move back into central midfield alongside Fernandes. However, Sesko concluded Gameweek 2 without registering a shot, having only touched the ball 19 times.

Ruben Amorim later admitted that Sesko “needs time” to adapt to life at Old Trafford:

“I think he needs time. It’s not easy sometimes when you are on the bench and you get into the game and the game is really fast. I think he is understanding that the game is faster than the Bundesliga. But he’s fighting. He had some good connections with his team-mates. I felt that when he was on the pitch, he wasn’t on in our best moment. That can change the way you see a player. I am very happy as you can see his effort. We need to help him, we need to be in a better moment to help him.” – Ruben Amorim on Benjamin Sesko

Matthijs de Ligt (£5.0m) deserves a brief mention as well.

He effectively organised the United defence during the match and has now earned DefCon points in both of his appearances this season. Despite not securing a clean sheet, he has accumulated 11 points, having claimed the maximum bonus at Craven Cottage.

Sunday’s result leaves United winless in two matches. Given that next week’s home meeting with Burnley is followed by Manchester City and Chelsea, it feels doubly important.

SMITH ROWE IMPACT

Emile Smith Rowe (£5.9m) made the difference for Fulham, as he ghosted into the box to tap home Alex Iwobi’s (£6.5m) cross with his first touch.

The substitute had only been on the pitch for 96 seconds, after taking the place of £4.5m midfielder Josh King.

Smith Rowe’s impact off the bench could put pressure on the youngster in Gameweek 3, although it is worth noting the two did feature in the same team together in pre-season, with the former Arsenal man playing off the left instead.

King did pretty well before his withdrawal, too, with his prodded effort smothered by Altay Bayindir (£5.0m).

Another couple of subs, Antonee Robinson (£5.0m) and Harry Wilson (£5.5m), brought further energy upon their introduction.

Fulham mirrored United’s back three formation on Sunday, with Kenny Tete (£4.5m) tucked in as a third centre-half and Timothy Castagne (£4.5m) and Ryan Sessegnon (£5.4m) deployed as wing-backs.

The strategy effectively nullified the threat of United’s two No 10s, Mbeumo and Mount.

It also afforded Fulham an extra man in central midfield, with Iwobi thriving as a result.

“We knew that we would be able to get behind their two midfielders and that their centre-backs would want to jump. We exploited that today.” – Alex Iwobi

It was a fluid set-up, however. At one point, Marco Silva tweaked the formation, moving Castagne to right midfield and returning to a back four.

Elsewhere, Muniz was included up front, with Raul Jimenez (£6.5m) dropping to the bench.

On the DefCons front, Fulham’s Joachim Andersen (£4.5m) and Sasa Lukic (£5.0m) both hit the required threshold.

Said this in pre-season and it really showed yesterday towards the end of the game. Ten Haag had this terrible idea that transitions should be forced without sideway passing to create control, but rather break down the opponent quickly with riskier passes. Easier said than done, the team kept on making mistakes at the beginning of transitions, often losing the ball in dangerous areas in their own half when especially Casemiro was given the task to act like a regista. What happened yetserday was that once Mbuemo, Cunha and Šeško were on the field together, they were completely cut out of the game without service, nor did they develop a solid pressing discipline to win the ball early, sometimes even wondering if they should track back or not. In this transfer window, United have bought fancy attackers without a plan to effectively move the ball forward or take control. I feel sorry for Šeško who showed glimpses of technical brilliance, but couldn't even touch the ball.

The first 15 mins utd were very good, cunha could’ve had 3, but it tailed off after that. Midfield is the problem. Amorim needs to sort it out or he’ll be gone by Xmas

Unless Amorim is gone by next weekend, I can't see where the goals will be coming from personally.

Manager is the problem. Players never were. United fans sheepishly holding onto this "back the manager" nonsense once again, digging themselves into a deeper hole. Cycle repeats itself.

Mainoo should be getting minutes, yes, but he is not going to plug this midfield. He’s not a ball carrier, he’s in line to replace Bruno.

Hence why a 2-man midfield, and Amorim's brain-dead system, will never work. Imagine Mainoo-Palhinha-Bruno under Thomas Frank. But United fans wanted a fancy name instead and are now too delusional to cut their losses.

True. But also a large extent of the problems United currently have are due to fan sentimentality influencing the board's decision to keep ETH. Same thing with Amorim now... idiotic fans saying he needs a pre-season + his own players etc. "we sack too many managers" blah blah blah

None of what you’re saying is really outrageous though. Once they decide to keep him, you have to give him a preseason.

The whole thing shows you how fickle opinion really is though, as you had people tipping us for top 4 based off last week.

We fail to beat Burnley convincingly and he’s gone I think. The problem is who do you get

I know you’re joking but it didn’t work for Spurs. The issue is we could potentially sack Amorim and replace him with someone like Southgate or Potter.

Could take a punt on Estevao? Looks great but minutes might be an issue

Fantasy Bundesliga going big this season. Found this important change interesting, which will improve the in-game experience of users/members. We all know how frustrating it is when we buy players only for them to get injured. You just don’t know if the -4/-8 hit could impact the person’s mental health even if it sounds ridiculous, some cases exist.

    Unlike FPL,
    Managing your team
    (Transfers)
Up until the start of the first matchday, you are able to make unlimited transfers. From that point on, you can make as many as five transfers between matchdays.

You are able to cancel your transfers until kick-off of the next matchday's first game, which allows you to react to late injuries, for example. Should you undo any transfers, you will need to reselect your starting XI and, if necessary, your star player.

Thanks to the new feature of being able to cancel transfers up to the kick-off of the first game of a matchday, you can also tinker with your team every day and swap out new purchases but also have no reason to worry if the player later becomes scathed.

Would play if it was available as a website too instead of just as an app only game.

They're all good options but I'd want in on a Spurs attacker with their form and fixtures so I'd go with Brennan

I think you've got to play into the Spurs fixtures.

I have Sarr and Semenyo is a decent option.

I'd give Grealish a few more games tbf but he was definitely involved again.

I love FPL because of the positive impact it has on my beloved Liverpool! By selecting players like Haarland, Fernandes etc I know they will blank which is all good for Liverpool. No Liverpool players in my team so they can all score and get clean sheets! I only play FPL for the greater good of Liverpool! I should charge them fees!

I usually try to avoid arsenal players while supporting them so when I do poorly in FPL I don't even mind if it's down to arsenal. There are exceptions obviously (rvp, fabregas,Sanchez,Saka) that u just have to get sometimes

Personal best seasons were the last two debacles under wenger haha

As a Wirtz owner, I am happy FPL have intervened and not let his price drop.

I am now of the view that there should be no price changes until after the GW3 deadline i.e., only transfers made after the game has reloaded for GW4 count towards price changes.

Not sure about longer term but Milenkovic could go crazy this weekend judging by how West Ham defended set pieces against Chelsea and two of Sunderland's goals were headers in the box against them.

Not Gabriel with those fixtures. Do a WC with the potential of bringing in Saka, Gyorkers and an Arsenal defender once fixtures change.

I personally think Saka will have a big season.

    2 FTs:

    Sels
    Muñoz Milenković Dorgu
    Palmer Bruno Wirtz Sarr Reijnders
    Haaland Ekitiké

    Dúbravka. Guiu Diouf Estève

Palmer and Guiu out to B.Johnson and Wood with Reijnders first on the bench looks on?

Depending on what happens tonight, Man Utd must play the squad in the league cup at Grimsby I think mid week.

Would you hold Bruno for Burnley in this scenario?

What would you do with this lot?
