Another second-half goal burst made it two home wins in two for Sunderland as they mounted a late comeback to beat Brentford.

From a Fantasy perspective, there were two main talking points for both clubs: who will take penalties going forward and who will start up front?

Here are our Scout Notes from the Stadium of Light.

SCHADE ON PENS – OR NOT…?

Owners of Igor Thiago (£6.0m) had a similar day to those who have Joao Pedro (£7.6m) in their squads: the joy of a second Premier League goal of the season but the irritation that he didn’t take his side’s penalty.

Thiago had previously netted from the spot in Gameweek 1 – and that was done with Kevin Schade (£7.0m) on the field.

On Saturday, however, Schade stepped up to take the Bees’ second spot-kick of 2025/26, despite Thiago being present. Almost inevitably, he missed.

There wasn’t much clue from Andrews after full-time whether Schade will still be in the mix going forward, with the Bees’ boss diplomatic in his support of the German.

“The players, since they’ve come back from pre-season, have been practising penalties, so there’s no issue on that. Players will miss penalties, so I’m okay with that.” – Keith Andrews to the BBC

“Bryan [Mbeumo] was the penalty taker since Ivan [Toney] left the building and it’s something we’ve been conscious of for a while. We’ve been practising a lot in training. It can happen. I don’t put any blame on Kevin.” – Keith Andrews to Brentford’s in-house media

AND LE FEE ON PENS – OR NOT…?

Sunderland’s track record from 12 yards last season was abysmal. To cap the bad run off, Eliezer Mayenda (£5.5m) missed from the spot in pre-season.

And so, the responsibility fell to the recalled Enzo Le Fee (£4.9m) when the Black Cats were awarded their latest penalty on Saturday.

As the player himself said after the game, however, it might be Habib Diarra (£5.5m) taking the next one.

“I was sure I would score. We had a discussion with Habib [Diarra], because he wanted to take it as well, but I was sure, so he let me shoot and I scored.

“No, no, no [I am not the first-choice taker]. If we have another one, I will let Habib shoot because he let me shoot today.” – Enzo Le Fee on his penalty

Le Fee had found himself out of the side in the first two Gameweeks but came back into Regis Le Bris’ line-up against Brentford, with Simon Adingra (£5.5m) making way.

Deployed on the left flank, Le Fee hadn’t had a single shot or penalty box touch until his spot-kick.

Diarra, however, had a joint-match-best three shots. He’s the one pushing forward most from central midfield, and he’s Sunderland’s leading player for shots (five) and penalty box touches (eight) this season. It was Diarra who won the penalty that Le Fee scored, indeed.

Above: Habib Diarra’s shotmap in Gameweek 3

WISSA TO STAY – OR NOT…?

Thiago hasn’t got much competition up front at present. Indeed, he’s one of just three FPL forwards to have played all 270 minutes of Premier League football this season.

But could last season’s main man, Yoane Wissa (£7.5m), be back in Gameweek 4 to challenge him?

Andrews thought so when interviewed after the Sunderland game.

“Yeah, I do, yeah. The stance hasn’t changed throughout the whole window. Two days away from the close of it now, thankfully, so there’s light at the end of the tunnel for me. Unless anything’s happened today, I expect Yoane to be a Brentford player come Tuesday.

“Yeah, [he’s been] training, fitness levels will be fine. I don’t see a big issue with him integrating into the group.” – Keith Andrews when asked if he expected Yoane Wissa to still be a Brentford player come September 2

Come Sunday, however, Wissa had had his own say.

This is one to watch on deadline day…

THREE-WAY FIGHT BECOMES TWO-WAY

There’s ongoing uncertainty up front for Sunderland, too.

Mayenda has started all three league matches for Sunderland this season but positional rival Wilson Isidor (£5.5m) has outscored him, coming off the bench to net two goals.

The French striker nodded in the winner on Saturday and is very much pressing for a start from Gameweek 4 onwards.

“Yeah, we are always talking about new signings. So I just want to repeat that we have already good players in our squad.” – Regis Le Bris when asked if Wilson Isidor was giving him a welcome selection headache

One forward who won’t be part of the striking equation at Sunderland is the 14%-owned Marc Guiu (£4.4m).

The injury picked up by Liam Delap (£6.4m) on Saturday seems to have had a domino effect, with Chelsea keen to bolster their numbers up top. Part of that reinforcement will, it looks like, see Guiu return to his parent club.

Let’s see if Sunderland add to their own strike force on deadline day, having lost Guiu.

THREE OUT OF THREE FOR VAN DEN BERG

This was very nearly a solid Brentford defensive performance in the manner of Gameweek 2.

Up until Sunderland’s 82nd-minute penalty, needlessly given away by substitute Rico Henry (£4.5m), the hosts had mustered just 0.33 xG (StatsBomb):

Sepp van den Berg (£4.5m) at least partly compensated with defensive contribution (DC) points. He’s one of just three players to deliver those in all three Gameweeks:

As for the hosts, Nordi Mukiele (£4.0m) was the newest addition to their backline. He replaced the injured Dan Ballard (£4.6m) and bagged DC points on his full Premier League debut.

Considering Rutter > Enzo (definitely not a knee-jerk reaction - I had him from GW4 last season and he did me well. It was just the price hike that put me off from the start. Honest)

I really don’t know what to think about Bruno now. In dm he’s a defcon beast but he barely touches the box and xgi is so low from open play.
Maybe better chances to play 10 with Cunha out but he a question mark for me if he worth 9mil. Other mids so bad tho so maybe just roll with it.

If Man Utd didn’t get that penalty yesterday, you would be rage selling him. If he plays dm for the entire season, he’s not a good pick

If you want someone to get the DC bonus every week and almost only that: Caicedo is your man.

Great 5th mid that you can put on the bench and he'll step up when you need 4 points off the bench.

How many points does he, score this, season, about 200? Is that worth 9m of budget?

      1. SalahFingers
        • 7 Years

Lets not be hasty. He currently has 4.66 points average per game.

Extrapolate that to a full season = 177pts and that's assuming he plays all 38 games. It's also what he got for the past 3 seasons. 8-10 goals, 8-10 assists approx.

He could do better, but nothing is pointing to that. If anything, Man Utd look way worse than last season and that season was their worst ever.

      Smooth:
58 points, thanks to captain Joao Pedro 9*2, Bruno 10, Bowen 9 and Sanchez 6.
      Up another two million places.

      Rough:
Left 20 points on the bench, including Lacroix 11 and Foster 6.
This was 5 more than when I played my Bench Boost in Gameweek 2.

        More Roughs:
Seven of my starting players have now blanked three times in a row.
I don't normally like to play my wildcard this early, but in this case I think I have to!

And despite having twice risen by two million paces (following an extremely disappointing Gameweek 1), I am still down at 4.7 million.

      Smooth:
      - Haaland(c) didn’t fail - plus minimal damage from other top caps - and Fullkrug out (for him) didn’t backfire.
      - 50 points for a modest first green arrow of the season.
      - Diouf starting gamble paid off, DC for Rice and Porro

      Rough:
      - All around blanks otherwise, including new arrival Reijnders
      - Diakite bench (though was never likely to start him this week anyway!)
      - Villa… as a fan and long-suffering Watkins+Rogers+Konsa owner

      WC time!

      ROUGH
Free Hit scored 49, about par... at 4m rank haha
Somehow managed to pick 2 non-starters who got autosubbed for 1 pt (while my last sub got 13)
Also picked 2 players that played 30 mins or less
If I left my team with no FTs I would've got 58

      SMOOTH
Two weeks (or at least 10 days) to not worry about this rubbish

      FH points: 44 (including Cucurella (6), Pedro (9), Munoz (9) & Diouf (10))

Points if I did absolutely nothing (except captain Pedro, the only option I had): 54

Managed to avoid all the FH options that were in my initial FH draft and in and out of the draft in the final few days, like Mbeumo (10pts), Grealish (10pts), Ndiaye (7pts) & Thiago (6). (If you saw my posts all week, you'd have seen how indecisive I was this week and how these players were so close to making the final cut)

Instead, the only players that returned were Pedro and Cucurella (both of whom were already in my non-FH team) and Haaland. The rest of the team got 11pts combined.

James Milner played 30 mins and got the same as my whole midfield, which included Cunha, who came off injured after 30 mins, and Barnes, who was inexplicably benched, playing only 22 mins.

I doubled-up on Murillo & Milenkovic, which looked like safe CSs against a toothless West Ham, right up until the 84th minute, when Forest imploded and let in 3 goals. LiveFPL had me at 66k OR until that implosion. I now sit at 483k.

Perhaps worst of all is that I sacrificed my budget for the benefits a FH might bring. I sat through 3 price drops, which leave me with a selling value of 99.7m for my WC (planned for GW4). I could had avoided 1-3 of those drops with my 1FT and maybe hits (I already had to sell Frimpong before his GW2 drop thanks to his GW1 injury) or by WCing a week early (given the addition of injuries to Saka and Palmer as well as Wirtz' poor form).

Or perhaps even worser, I made my striker debut in SKLW against a GK who used their FH this week to get Fernandes and Pope. It was a rude awakening to the Premier League as I failed to score, letting my side down as we lost 3-0 in this first game of the season.

FH netted 58 for me, blanks from Cunha, Barnes, Sels, Milenkovic, Richarlison and Wood.

I used my hatred of Chelsea to avoid Cucurella and Joao Pedro, that cost me a few points.

        1. Deulofail

Gotta be reasonably happy with 58pts given how many mines you could have stepped on. I nearly went without Pedro. I was debating it right up to the deadline. His replacement would likely have been Johnson (1pt) or Mbuemo (10pts). Maybe I should be feeling grateful for my luck!

        FH didn't include Cucurella (6), Pedro (9), Munoz (9) & Diouf (10)

I meant to say that my non-FH team (if I did nothing) included Cucurella (6), Pedro (9), Munoz (9) & Diouf (10)

My experience playing chips similar to Free Hit in other fantasy games has taught me it is very, very easy for things to go wrong playing it in a single GW. I can easily see myself not using it in the first half of the season.

Smooth: My transfers in, Mbeumo (C) and Muñoz, were my top scorers. Got Bowen's goal off the bench for Strand Larsen. First ever DC points from Porro and Rice!

Rough: Nothing from Sels, Milenkovic or Watkins after three weeks. Petrovic on my bench outscored Sels for the second week running.

Terrible week after a great start. 41 points! 7m GW rank. I played FH to load up on Forest and Spurs and remove Liv/Arse players & not have to sell Palmer/Ait Nouri.

First draft had Enzo in & Pedro(c). Ended up bringing in Wood and (c) and took out Enzo for double Spurs mids to cover taking Richarlison out. Disaster.

I should have done Palmer>Bruno(c) and been done with it but didn’t want to be lumbered with Bruno in coming weeks. Being too clever. And West Ham suddenly become the best team in the world plus Watkins not scoring and loads have got Guehi.

Think my usual team scored better. I know KDH scored been to afraid to work it out!

He's never had a high scoring season for a reason.

I don't like buying players just because they've had 2 out of 3 good games. If he keeps it up he'll be worth it though, but I just see him turning back to his 5 goals, 10 assists a season max. He's arguably played some of the weaker teams in the league already too.. Wolves and Leeds although leeds are doing stronger than expected.

He's not bad.. but I don't see him as must have. He might be ok until the bigger players start doing something.

Possibly not. He's started rising already so he just needs to hit under the -100% threshold and then there's the long trek back to +100% for a rise.

Either way I think it's best for everyone to wait before buying him. No real reason to buy him right now. His fitness may not be good enough to start right away.

Surely both if you can! Isak lack of pre-season a bit of concern maybe, would wait for preGW4 presser from Slot before making a non-WC move for him

      WC draft 1…

£7.2m ITB - unsure what to do with 3rd striker slot and currently ditching Salah for Gakpo unless Isak arrives and changes things - with a view to catching some potential risers…

      Vicario Dubravka
      Munoz Lacroix Chalobah Senesi Diouf
      Gakpo Grealish Kudus Enzo Reijnders
      Haaland JPedro Guiu

Will probably only keep one Palace defender; debating Senesi vs Diakite (who I’ve had since GW1;, Chalobah may go for someone like Guehi (if he gets Liverpool move) or Porro (if I decide to keep him, and keep Sels in net instead of the Vicario switch); Grealish slightly edging it over Ndiaye on eye test for me (though the latter has pens) with KDH also lurking given the savings he offers; Enzo will almost certainly make way pre-deadline (probably for Sarr), just hoping for a double rise first; Kudus is tricky as I rate him and Spurs’ upcoming fixtures but midfield spots hotly contested.

Having just seen Isak news, if his arrival is sealed then I’ll probably put him in up top, IF we get an indication he’s ready to start GW4, and switch Gakpo to someone else

I think 2 crystal palace defenders is too much but time will tell. They were one of the best defenses last season so maybe they'll keep it up.

Might be worth thinking about upgrading Guiu to someone like Isak, Ekitike, Gyokeres. You might have good news on Isak before international break ends. If you do though, you're gonna have to bench one of Enzo, Reijnders, Grealish or Kudus every week. I'd probably go with Reijnders (like I did this week).

        Otherwise decent team IMO.

Ta! Yeah as above, Guiu will likely become Isak after tonight’s apparent price drop, and stay that way unless Slot indicates the Swede won’t start GW4. Have already tweaked the following, too 😆

          - Lacroix (back down) to Hartman - might become someone else again by deadline but don’t mind keeping a £4.0 for now
          - Kudus to Sarr (the former will probably come back in for Enzo once I’ve maxed out the Chelsea man’s price rises)

You’re very correct re benching headache, of course… may look to BB soon and then rectify

Aye - per that (admittedly way too long) par of reasoning, he’ll probably come in for Enzo - just hoping to catch a double rise first! Though with Sarr being close to a rise himself, may get him in for Gakpo now.

      Henderson

Pretty tidy - would worry for Ekitike’s role if Isak arrival is confirmed, though. I’m also debating Vicario + Munoz/Lacroix vs Henderson + Porr (who I’ve owned from GW1), personally.

If you've been paying attention you'll also notice that site isn't 100% with the drops. People said palmer wouldn't drop but he did (to be fair he was lower than -100% too, same with a few others).

I would not assume 100% accuracy either way.

here's a quote from the wiki...

            - He is widely regarded as one of the best attacking midfielders in the world.[4][5][6][7]

Now.. I would have expected something from him in the 3 games he's played with that. Not necessarily goals or assists, but he hasn't done anything... like at all. Watching the game and seeing the crosses come in. Very little from him. Shots from him? very little. Key passes? Very little.

I doubt they'll bench him though. I guess he'll improve over time.

I wildcarded last week. Went from a bad team to.... another bad team.

        I want another 4-5 transfers.

So if you are going to wildcard, at least do it straight away and catch all the risers in price. You might be able to get some team value to it. Don't do it if you are going to do it late in a week though.

Hard to know, but I'm going to get rid of Murillo when I have a spare transfer as I don't think Notts Forests defence is going to be as close to as good as last season. They've played 3 kinda meh teams so far and left in 5 goals already.

Not getting rid of him in the immediate future though. There's other fires to put out.

I'd say none right now because tough fixtures.

but I'd probably go Gabriel > Raya > Saliba > everyone else.

Gyokeres could be a nice differential though, but hard to know if he can step up during the tough games. He didn't against Liverpool

        • 7 Years
        3 months, 5 days ago

That's just cos Notts Forest haven't had a single clean sheet and the others have (at least most probably have)

        Leeds - 2 clean sheets

        Sunderland - 1 clean sheet

        Burnley - 1 clean sheet

        That's basically all of them.

Just remembering last year and what a struggle it was to get a decent 4.0 .The tragedy of BARCO. And how dominant Forest was.. Aina and Milenkovic in top ten from the start or so. Heck this year Gudmansson 4.0 has scored 17 and collectively the four NFO defenders above have scored 19. I have two NFO defenders and Gudmansson, who is on the bench. Funny game.

I don't think they'll last, but I think they'll still be decent defenders as 4.0s go. if I had another wildcard, I'd probably pick 3 premium/decent defenders to play every week and two 4.0s from opposite teams Leeds/Sunderland maybe.

I wouldn't sell Diouf yet. It looks like West Ham might have learnt how to defend.

I'd possibly wait on better isak news.

Grealish is meh for me, but he's better than Rogers probably until Villa learn how to play.

Sels is annoying and I definitely don't see a CS for them this week away to Arsenal, so maybe him first.
