Fantasy Football Scout community writer Greyhead returns for 2025/26 with his series of The Great and the Good articles, analysing the transfers and strategies of some well-known Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers

The Great and The Good this season are the FPL Godfather Mark Sutherns, the BlackBox pair of Az and Andy North, Scouts FPL GeneralJoe and Tom, the FPL Wire trio of PrasLateriser and Zophar, FPL celebrities FPL HarryMartin BakerPingreenFPL Frasier and Luke WilliamsBen CrellinFabio Borges and Tom Dollimore from the Hall of Fame, plus of course, last year’s mini league-winner Huss E.

“Things can only get better”

No pain, no gain. Yet maybe just a little gain would be nice. Nothing too dramatic. All we are asking for is a week without injuries, the previously impenetrable 24/25 version of the Nottingham Forest defence and Florian Wirtz (£8.4m) actually doing something, anything, to justify his pre-season hype. And whilst we are at it, where are all these defensive contribution (DefCon) points?

Still the international break is upon us and more importantly transfer deadline day, which as I type this, is already causing chaos with the aforementioned Marc Guiu (£4.4m) no longer the Bench Boost gift we hoped for, Jorgen Strand Larsen (£6.5m) refusing to get off the team bus and now Alexander Isak‘s (£10.4m) move to Liverpool no doubt leading to plenty of FPL column inches over the coming weeks.

Amongst all this, chips are being played as we all adjust to this new world of FPL. General went all in with a Wildcard, whilst Fabio Borges showed a reckless side as he played his Free Hit.

OVERALL PERFORMANCE

Joe Lepper was this week’s star performer, accumulating 72 points from some less obvious places, including Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall (£5.0m) and Tosin Adarabioyo (£4.5m). These contributions complemented his sensible transfers of Bruno Fernandes (£9.0m) and Joao Pedro (£7.7m).

Yet, he is not top of The Great and The Good as that honour goes to new boy Huss E, who won last year’s open to all feeder league and now takes top spot in the senior competition with his secret weapon of Lucas Paqueta (£5.9m).

In other news, there was much excitement as Fabio Borges played his Free Hit (see below). It wasn’t an overwhelming success with a triple up on Nottingham Forest reaping very little, and he would’ve fared better had he captained one of his Manchester United midfielders, well apart from Matheus Cunha (£8.1m).

FABIO BORGES FREE HIT

In fact, Cunha was as popular as a well-aged eggnog as he was handed the armband by five of The Great and The Good, and then hobbled off in the first half. There was quite a variety in armband picks this week, with the Bruno band being the smuggest, although no doubt Andy North will have awarded himself a chufty badge for going with Joao Pedro.

FPL GENERAL WILDCARD

No one has had a great start; however, FPL General saw enough to press the overhaul button in Gameweek 3. No doubt the injuries had a part to play as well.

He is sticking admirably to his no Mohamed Salah (£14.5m)/no Erling Haaland (£14.1m) mandate, which gives him a very healthy-looking squad and bank balance as he leaves £4.6m in reserve. He kept only Tijjani Reijnders (£5.7m), Pedro Porro (£5.6m), Chris Wood (£7.7m), Joachim Andersen (£4.5m), and, of course, everyone’s favourite £4.0m keeper Martin Dubravka

He has gone strong at the back with Daniel Munoz (£5.5m), Marc Cucurella (£6.1m) and Virgil van Dijk (£6.0m) joining Porro. I suspect 4-3-3 will be his preferred formation as Wood and Pedro are joined by a suddenly very popular Viktor Gyokeres (£9.0m) – the algorithm has spoken. As for his midfield, well, he will have nightmares about Cunha over Fernandes.

TRANSFERS

There was plenty of transfer activity this week, with Tom and Mark even taking hits. Neither made any gains, so it was left to Joe to take the wheeler-dealer title as his moves for Fernandes and Pedro provided immediate returns.

Cunha and Gyokeres were the most popular picks, whilst Az went his own way, going with Anthony Elanga (£7.0m) and Morgan Gibbs-White (£7.5m), which on their day were smart moves, but just not this day.

The full list of transfers is below.

TEMPLATE

A little judder in the template, which let’s be clear, doesn’t appear to be working very well this season, with Cristian Romero (£5.0m) in for Chris Richards (£4.5m) and Cunha in for the injured Cole Palmer (£10.4m), who then got injured.

MONEY, MONEY, MONEY

A quick look at the cash flow now, as remarkably we already see a £1.3m difference in team value between the lowest, Joe Lepper (£99.6m), and the highest, FPL General (£100.9m).

As always, Mark Sutherns seems determined to keep a high team value. He made all three of his transfers on the Monday night, which sees him up to £100.6m. It just didn’t translate to any points.

CONCLUSION

Another challenging weekend for many then after some aggressive moves across the board. Maybe the increase in chips and ongoing ability to roll transfers favours the risk, but as of yet, there doesn’t appear to have been much reward.

Anyway, that’s all from me for now, and remember, don’t have FPL nightmares.

For those affected by any of the topics raised above, you can find me here on Twitter or here on BlueSky.

Which do we think has the bigger upside for GW4?

    A. Watkins (eve) > Mateta (SUN)
    B. De Cuyper > Lacroix (SUN) and bench Milenkovic/Diouf (ars/TOT)

Does this team need improvement?! And if so, where?!

    Raya (Dubravka)

Calafiori, Cucurella, Pedro Porro (Senesi, Gudmundsson)

    Salah, Semenyo, Mbeumo, Reijnders (King)

    Joao Pedro, Ekitike, Gyokeres.

Morning guys. With all this transfer news, what would you do with this lot.

I have 4.5 MILLION ITB! (It was going to be for Gakpo> Salah). Isak news has put me off.

Thanks chaps. At least I'm in the top 700,000

4.5m ITB is cray cray! When Isak is back playing, I'd go Ekitike to Isak. But Wood to Joao Pedro for now, perhaps Enzo out for Grealish?!

Not really that crazy for now. I'm waiting for the big guns to start firing. The mid range players look ace. I'd like Grealish, but just never liked the guy after he went to citeh. Not a reason to not choose him I know, but personal feelings towards certain players have hurt me in the past

      Salah.

I'd monitor Isak's involvement for Sweden first but as attractive as the fixture is, I wouldnt say this is the entry week for Isak. No match fitness and Slot will likely integrate him off the bench to begin with.

He has more chance of a start in the merseyside derby at Anfield.

Obdo agree with that. One of a few things I said repeatedly in the season build up was why Palmer, particularly as Cucu and Pedro were better options and why no Arsenal defenders. The two seemed no brainers.

Easy wild card here right?.. with Sarr injury and out of form Villa forwards and forest defence. Plus Writz.
Barnes was a punt for gw 3 which didn’t work and can’t risk him now with minutes doubt.

      Sels

Porro - Neco - Andersen

Salah - Writz - Sarr - Barnes - Rogers
Pedro - Watkins

Dubravka - Diouf - Rodon - Krup Jnr

They were a minute late and it cost them £10k.

I guess Man Utd didn't want to re-live the experience, albeit their schedule would have allowed for a rearranged fixture which can happen in severe cases of breaches.

An observation on the season so far - not sure fixtures will have such a big bearing this season, given early upsets and fact several of previous strong defences (eg Liverpool, Arsenal) are looking leaky. So priority seems to be compiling a core team of reliable 90-minute players inc def/mids with regular defcon contributions (eg Bruno), and form strikers (eg Pedro). Keep bench cheap and pile funds into the starters. And the Salah/Haaland combo is perfectly workable if you want to do it (I'm on this atm).

No matter what core of players you go with it seems the best value players get DCs that push them into the bonus + a CS, assist etc

Some good observations apart from the fact Arsenal are not looking leaky at all - the only goal they conceded was a wordlie from 30 yards out. Liverpool's van Dijk is meanwhile racking up the DefCons like no one else.

Defenders are puzzling me on WC, seems like its between

      1. Cheap rotating CBs who get DCs

      2. Attacking fullbacks for occasional attacking returns/cleansheets

      3. Pay extra for premium defenders, Gab/Vvd etc

It’s looking a lot like the goalkeeper situation when those cheapies, with saves, are mixed in with premium keepers come seasons end.

Attacking FB/WB also get the occasional DC points (Porro, Munoz)

Don't create the headache of rotation. I'm on WC and I've decided to go 4 at the back with Senesi, Lacroix, Munoz and Chalobah. All these guys have been able to generate clean sheets, DCs, BAPs, and attacking contributions and have good fixture runs.

Those players seem to be the sweet spot, im just second guessing how sustainable itl be, attacking returns at least

Perma Cucurella, Gabriel and Munoz (plus 2 x4 dudes) is working quite nicely for me. So far.

Problem with cheapies is the consistency obviously so your prob right, I started with Cucu Porro RAN but on an enforced WC but that could be the model to stick with

Bear in mind that player prices are set on past performance without DCs. Now that the scoring is different and players have more routes to points guys like Senesi at 4.5 shouldn't be dismissed because of price alone.

I really wish I could have waited til GW6 to WC - better point to switch Salah ➡ Haaland, couple weeks for Isak to get up to speed & see how other new signings affect things... With your squad I think I would hold but maybe just leave the defence and look at Cunha - Gakpo, Watkins - Mateta or something instead

I've always been a fan of multiple hits. It's a bit like compiling a stocks and shares portfolio. Spread your outlay and you have a much better chance of hitting the jackpot. Speculate to accumulate as my financial adviser constantly tells me.

On a wildcard due to injuries!

              Sanchez - Durbavka
              VVD - Munoz - Porro - Sendai - Rodon
              Salah - Wirtz - Kudos - Reijnders - Dewsbury
Isak (incoming 4 Liverpool) - Mateta - Pedro.

Will hold some transfers to bring in Arsenal but should be ok for 2/3 weeks before Haaland arrives for Burnley.
Any feedback before Isak turns greatly appreciated!

Sarr has a grade 2 hamstring tear so is out for up to 4 weeks I think.

He's my only definite issue so I can't justify splurging on the wildcard.

              Sanchez / Dubravka
              Porro - Konsa - Dorgu / Diouf - Esteve
              Wirtz - Gakpo - Kudus - Sarr / King
              Haaland - Watkins - Pedro

Decent start to the season with 330k OR and 2 FT now.

But time to WC with these concerns or try to fix with the FTs?
              - Dorgu
              - Konsa
              - Watkins
              - Sarr
              - (Wirtz + Gakpo?)

I think you can get to a good place with FTs (Dorgu, Konsa), especially if Sarr news ends up positive. Wouldn't be hitting WC for the sake of Watkins (good fixtures and new supply lines) and the Liverpool lads (don't know who is going to play yet).

Is there any way to disable the subscription pop-up that flashes on every page?

Got a big disconnect between my 'fires' (2 or 3 non-playing subs, plus Watkins) and the players I really want (Haaland).. Planning to WC in GW7.

              Sels | (Dub)
              Gudmunson - Tarko - VVD | (Murillo - AWB*)
              Salah (C) - Reijnders - Palmer - Bruno - PM Sarr*
              J Pedrio - Watkins* | (Guiu*)

              2 FT | £0.0m ITB

              Should I:
              (A) Palmer & Watkins > King & Haaland
              (B) Something more balanced to put out the fires(*) and wait until WC for Haaland
