This two-week international break provides each Fantasy Premier League (FPL) manager with time to think about whether a Wildcard activation is needed to fix their early problems.

Here, eight-time top 10k finisher Zophar talks us through his current position on it.

Make sure you sign up for the new season to get all the Member-only articles, tools and features to make 2025/26 your best FPL campaign yet!

FPL 2025/26 first draft team reveals: DC magnets + Bench Boost 1

It’s been a rough, low-scoring start to the season, where the top one million rank is approximately 27 points worse off than 2024/25. This has only exacerbated the variance factor, with some teams doing significantly worse than others.

As human beings, when faced with adversity or disappointment, we naturally respond by taking action. For example, myself and many others who’ve had a poor Gameweek before the international break will be tempted to activate a Wildcard, as it takes immediate, proactive steps to rectify the problem. It’s how we are programmed to cope.

The easy response is that it’s too early to Wildcard because we don’t know enough. And while yes, I do agree with that general wisdom, I don’t think it should be a blank, all-encompassing statement.

It’s not just the classic ‘team-specific’ line, but there are opportunities over the next three-to-four Gameweeks to gain some ground and future-proof yourself for the fixture swings of later on.

So, while I do advocate holding this chip for later, I want to share a couple of Wildcard drafts that I’m using as a benchmark.

This is an exercise I like to do during the early weeks. See how far my team is from ‘the ideal 15’ and calculate how long it’d take to get there.

DRAFT ONE: NO HAALAND – BUT GAMEWEEK 6 FREE HIT

Could Zophar use his Wildcard by FPL Gameweek 4?

Defence

Here, I’d have David Raya (£5.5m), although I think that’s too much money to spend on a goalkeeper.

Arsenal have the best defence by far, there’s no doubt about that, and I think their defenders are a bit too pricey this year, given they won’t often bring in defensive contribution (DefCon) points.

This decision prepares you for their nice Gameweek 7 fixture swing, while the Gunners’ immediate hosting of Nottingham Forest also looks good for a clean sheet. Visiting Newcastle United in Gameweek 6 won’t be a problem because that’s when a Free Hit is planned.

DefCon monsters Joachim Andersen (£4.5m) and Marcos Senesi (£4.5m) play for solid defences and are racking up these new points. Considering they offer some goal threat too, the duo look like great value.

Similarly, Tosin Adarabioyo‘s (£4.5m) starting spot looks nailed now that Chelsea have failed to sign an additional centre-back. Plus, he possesses decent DefCon potential.

Joe Rodon (£4.0m) looks like good value, as Leeds United have kept clean sheets in both home fixtures. Meanwhile, Daniel Munoz (£5.5m) is great for the upcoming Crystal Palace run and can be converted to almost any other defender down the line.

Attackers

I would have had Ismaila Sarr (£6.5m) here, but his hamstring injury looks bad. Therefore, I’ve gone for Jack Grealish (£6.7m) instead.

As for Bruno Fernandes (£9.0m) and Lucas Paqueta (£5.9m), they’re good for DefCon, play 90 minutes and take penalties. Strong long-term picks. You can go for Tijani Reijnders (£5.7m), though. I still think he’s a great pick.

Mohamed Salah (£14.5m) stays, keeping Gameweeks 4 and 5 in mind, whereas Antoine Semenyo (£7.4m) looks like an expected goals (xG) monster.

Up front is an all-London trio. Viktor Gyokeres (£9.0m) for Arsenal’s upcoming run, Joao Pedro‘s (£7.7m) minutes look great now that Liam Delap (£6.4m) is injured, and Jean-Philippe Mateta (£7.5m) can profit from Palace’s next two fixtures.

DRAFT 2: THE HAALAND VERSION

Could Zophar use his Wildcard by FPL Gameweek 4? 1

As the image below shows, Erling Haaland (£14.1m) is miles ahead of the rest in terms of xG (see below). So, if you want him for the long term rather than just a Gameweek 6 Free Hit, it’s easier to get him now.

Could Zophar use his Wildcard by FPL Gameweek 4? 2

Only two downgrades are needed to convert Gyokeres into the Norwegian. Out go Raya and Fernandes for Djordje Petrovic (£4.5m) and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall (£5.0m).

In my first draft, Paqueta is usually the eighth attacker to bench, but in the second, it’ll be Dewsbury-Hall, while either Paqueta or Reijnders start each week, which is still quite good.

Petrovic is undoubtedly a downgrade from Raya, but I prefer spending £4.5m on a goalkeeper anyway.

We will be discussing these drafts – and more – on The FPL Wire’s first international break episode. You can check it out here.

Does this call for a Wild card?

    Dubravka (Sels)

    Cucurella - Esteve - Gudmundsson-Aina-Romero

Reijnders - Cunha - Grealish - Kudus- Wirtz

    Ekitike - Watkins - Haaland

I just took a 12 point hit (to ditch wood, get enzo + pedro etc)... I think 12 points are justified as I reckon I'll pull them back in. Just (I hope).

Any injuries I'll turn it into a FH - no damage done.

Basically, what I'm saying in your case is you only need Watkins, Cunha, Wirtz, Aina or Sels out (-12).

Just take the hit. Not the WC.

Are people seriously considering Lacroix over Munoz just because of DC potential? Munoz is far better pick for just 0.5m more!

Munoz more likely to get attacking returns.

Lacroix better in terms of defensiv contributions.

    Some thoughts about Salah

Salah looked not like at his best so far.. Lucky last-minute hauls, though, but still worrying.

Maybe he is struggling with all the new players around him.

Or maybe he is trying to avoid an injury before the ACON, therefore only at 99%.

Or age is slightly kicking in plus motivation issues.

I suspect it is a combination of all these things, and with an improved Chiesa still around, he could probably start losing minutes.

    Some thoughts about "hidden gems".

    1) Oscar Bobb
    2) Daichi Kamada
I think his natural role is the Eze position. At least he is playing that in the Japanese national team. He looked dangerous at Villa.Park

Great, pressed the button too soon.

Oscar Bobb has been overlooked in my opinion..He is still getting the minutes from Pep. Before his injury he looked like the next bandwagon. Top on my watchlist.

Having watched all 3 of City's games so far in full, I don't get the Bobb hype.

Can't cross. Too afraid to be selfish and shoot. A few good dribbles and that's about it. He's an average player. Rico Lewis v2.

He is a bit. But then the whole team hasn't really started firing, bar that first match. And Haaland was great last match - should have had a brace anyway.

Agreed - should've had a hatty first half. Haaland has looked electric. It's a shame Pep has entered his Mourinho era of being finished as a manager, though.

Hes decent not much more. But as an FPL asset he seems better than Reijnders. Gets in a lot of good positions and Pep seems to like him.

Not having watched him for City, but in national team I see where you're coming from. But with his dribbling he's the kind of player that is able to unlock low blocks and find that mousehole assist. But no shooter, no.

Getting the minutes under Pep means absolutely nothing as we've seen before. No one ends up nailed apart from Haaland and Rodri. I mean who even knows if Reijnders will be nailed all the time.

Not saying Pacqueta is a bad shout in the slightest, but I don't feel he's a priority with the next few fixtures. Don't seem the most amazing for attackers.

I wouldn't go Kamada as feels short term. Although probably start, might not necessarily. No Wharton hurts Palace. As does no Sarr.

Don't hate the move for Ndiaye, although they do wait bottom of the ticket for attacking difficult among next few... (debatable).

Doesn't look like there's a rush on Sarr/Ndiaye price rise/fall-wise. Sarr was so close to a rush before injury so will take a lot for him to fall.

Hey-o. Quite early for a RMT-esque question but full caveat I'll definitely be waiting for international break games to play out.

    Sanchez
    Porro Richards Milenkovic
    Salah Bruno Anderson Reijnders Sarr*
    Watkins Pedro
    Dubravka // Murillo Esteve Guiu*

Sarr is an annoying one is only transferred him in this week. Guiu likely does need to be handled sooner rather than later as he'll drop again (to free CHE spot).

Originally looked at ways to get Isak in, which involved downgrading Bruno or Watkins. Thinking I should reconsider with Bruno potentially getting to play #10 & Villa getting some attacking reinforcements (plus good fixtures) - with Sarr busted too.

    Guiu/Sarr > Isak/King (?)

Having Anderson/Reijnders/King (benching one) in XI could be more optimal, but the fixtures are okay enough:

GW4: Reij MUN, King LEE (Anderson ARS)
GW5: Anderson BUR, King BRE (Reij ARS)
GW6: Anderson SUN, Reij BUR (King AVL)
GW7: Trickier but will live with 1 week

    Leaves me with:

    Sanchez
    Porro Richards Milenkovic
    Salah Bruno Reijnders King
    Isak Watkins Pedro
    Dubravka // Anderson Murillo Esteve

GW5 fine. GW6 fine. (Watkins/Salah > Haaland/Semenyo, or whoever) - but still can use FH6 if really need to. Will likely WC sometimes 7 or onwards.

Big question mark is Isak starting! Thoughts? Alternatives?

I'd wait until Gw5 for Isak

But he could easily come on and do well at Burnley, as you say it's partly a wait and see with how the international games play out and fitness etc.

Just checking in, would you look at using a wildcard here?

I'm ranked around 1.5m and prior to the I Sarr injury news I wasn't considering it at all.

    What would you do?

    Muñoz Milenković Diouf

1.5mil rank is not an issue at all.

      Problem areas:
      - Sarr injured
      - Ekitike (but this week?)
      - Johnson (reckon dropped v soon)
      - Dorgu (fixtures)
      - Diouf (maybe)
      - NFO GK/DEF (still 2 ok after this week)

If Ekitike due to start & you swap out Sarr/Johnson this week - you can at least get by. Maybe not crazy high but OK.

But I think you're close to the threshold. Just quite hard to call if this week is the right week - as we'll probably get a lot of information seeing how teams setup after the International Break.

        Good points

I only just got Johnson and Wood in

So Sarr out for £6.9m is by best use of a FT for now ...

Grealish and Ndi both options on first glance.

I wouldn't WC, although I think Wirtz is a waste.

      Start Dorgu over Milenkovic

Dorgu isn't getting back into United's XI unless an injury to Dalot. Once he was taken out, he was never getting back in. Really poor player that started simply because he was an Amorim signing.

Sorry, I was thinking of the other 4.5 defender - Diouf

    Would you wildcard this?

    Sanchez
    Porro / Murillo / Richards
    Salah / Reijnders / Ndiaye / Sarr / Bruno
    Watkins / Pedro

    Dubrakva / Wood / Diouf / Esteve.

No. The only players I would be looking to replace are Murillo, Sarr (obviously) and Watkins.

If I stick I would bench Sarr (deal With him next GW) and sell Wood >> Mateta

No I don't think so. Quite similar to mine and I don't think there's enough huge issues.

Sell Sarr this week for a starter, or play Wood and hope.

If you have 2 FTs then even more flexible.

If you propose a Wildcard team then easier to critique vs this.

        Cheers.

To be fair I would only really keep Pedro / Salah and maybe porro on WC rest I would move on and change.

        Tough one

Only if you want to go Salah to Haaland

But you'll probably not do that before the Burnley game

      So no.

You can even play Wood with Sarr out, despite it being at the Emirates.

Lammens with 18.4 expected goal prevented last year, how is that even possible

    1. Brosstan

Mostly horrible finishing is my guess. Someone with a very high xG chance that is shot straight at the GK will lead to a high "xG prevented" stat. Of course some good goalkeeping as well.

I don't think that's how xG prevented is calculated.

xG prevented is based on the difference between xGoT (xG on Target, this is different from xG) and goals.

xGoT is calculated post shot, based on where the ball is going. A powerful shot in the corner of the goal will have a high xGoT and a shot in the middle will have a low xGoT. Shots that are wide will have xGoT of 0.

18.4 xG prevented is pretty crazy, though.

In terms of goalkeepers, he was/is the hottest property on the market. They should’ve had to pay at least double what they did, really. He excels as a shot stopper.

Hi all, I've had a decent start to the season so have 3 FT available.

    Team is currently:

    Sels - Dubvraka

Konsa - Diouf - De Cuyper - Rodon - Van de Ven

    Reijnders - Ndiaye - Salah - Kudus - Caicedo

Gyokeres - Joao Pedro - Haaland

How would you use your 3 FT transfers if you had this team? Defence starting to look a little weak and free hit seems tempting this week, although in my mini-leagues free hit in the past has gotten me seriously ahead when there's say 4 fixtures in one week.

    Thanks in advance, much apprieciated.

Is there a legitimate chance that Mark Guiu gets minutes against Brentford? They let Jackson go, Delap is injured... and the striker they brought on last game, George, was sold to Fulham. Pedro seems to be preferred in the 10 role with a striker ahead of him.

So it seems Guiu was recalled because he was actually needed to play a role. Or is there a striker in the mix that Im forgetting about?

Didn't Tyrique George transfer collapse in the last minute and he's still at Chelsea (genuine question).
Imho Guiu is just gonna be a back up in case of any injury + some last minute cameos. Palmer will probably be back soon anyway.

george didnt happen as Wilson stayed. but yeah i think there's a good chance guiu will be used/start against teams that sit deep and chelsea end up putting alot crosses into the box. pedro just isnt really a lone striker, his starts there at brighton last season showed that when he seemed to spend more time in the left back position than up top. palmer might end up playing rw alot, like he was seemingly meant to vs West ham

Ok, if George is still there that makes it less likely Guiu gets any decent minutes. I was sure it was reported that the deal went through but it seems you are right that it later collapsed last minute.

There is a CHANCE he could start but honestly there's so many caveats around that possibility.

Given Delap is out and we offloaded Jackson, be really is our only recognised ST aside from Pedro. Note that Guiu only recently has a medium term lay-off himself, so the risk is there.

Does the manager play then both from the start again, and increase risk of injury (due to more minutes)? I'm not so sure.

Although he did score midweek for Sunderland the fans though he mostly had a poor performance and was bullied a bit by lower league defenders. Given he has Brentford next, I'm not sure it's a great matchup.

But I don't see him in training & am not the manager so it's a good a guess as anyone's.

As others have said we have retained George. We've put up top and he's made an impact for us previously. Might bet the nod.

Unless you hear something explicitly about him starting BRE he's one to offload ASAP. Price will only fall quicker with others needing to free up a CHE spot with him.

    3) Nico (Easy fixtures in GW5 and 6)

Is this team worth a WC
If not which 1 or 2 should I get rid of

    Verbruggen Dubravka
    Porro Konsa Tosin Murillo Rodon
    Salah Rice KDH Kudus Palmer
    Watkins Mateta Wood

    1 FT 0.1 ITB

    Any ideas would be welcomed

Best gk on a wildcard, Dubravka will be the back up.
Worth spending £5.5m on Raya or Donnaruma or best to save £0.5m and go for Sanchez, Pope or Vicario?

Raya is worth the extra over those 5.0's. I'm even planning on an Arsenal defensive double-up from GW7.

Personally I want to stick with Gabriel and then Saka and Gyokeres comes into the mix, so no room. Could be same problem with Sanchez though, whom I currrently have

    Sanchez
    Chalobah Porro Calafiori Munoz
    Semenyo Paqueta Gakpo/Dango/elanga
    Pedro Haaland Gyokeres
    Petrovic Diakité

    Going for a 433 I reckon

    Here's my team:

    Raya, Kelleher
Gabriel, Esteve, Virgil, Dorgu, Van de Ven
    A. Ramsey, Caicedo, Salah, Wirtz, Bruno Fernandes
    João Pedro, Beto, Gyokeres

2 free transfers, 1.0m on the bank

I was thinking of Dorgu to Lacroix and Caicedo to Paqueta...
    Thoughts?
