With the next Fantasy Premier League (FPL) deadline on the way, we’re hearing from our panel of guest writers.

Here, five-time top 1k finisher Tom Freeman discusses his Gameweek 4 team and transfer.

Make sure you sign up for the new season to get all the Member-only articles, tools and features to make 2025/26 your best FPL campaign yet!

Tom Freeman’s Gameweek 2 team reveal: Andersen or Porro? 2

THE SEASON SO FAR

FPL notes: Cunha injury,

It’s been a tough start to the season.

It’s still early days, of course, but everyone wants to do well, and picking up only 24 points in Gameweek 3 was far from ideal.

Injuries have been a recurring theme so far.

Cole Palmer (£10.4m), Bukayo Saka (£9.8m), Matheus Cunha (£8.0m), Georginio Rutter (£5.9m) and Jorgen Strand Larsen (£5.9m) have all picked up injuries of some description, some more serious than others, so I’ve naturally considered a Wildcard.

Based on the feedback from my recent team reveal video, it appears most would have already pushed the button!

However, I actually think it’s a tricky time to Wildcard based on the fixtures, plus the fact I’m still trying to work so many teams out.

My club, Aston Villa, is a prime example. We’ve been terrible so far, so if I Wildcard, I’d naturally take out Ezri Konsa (£4.5m), Youri Tielemans (£5.9m) and Ollie Watkins (£8.9m).

But past experience tells me they’ll turn it around, particularly with Everton, Sunderland, Fulham and Burnley up next.

The danger is that I sit on them too long and fall further behind, but if I truly believe Harvey Elliott (£5.4m) is the missing ingredient, why take them out now, just before their good run of fixtures?

When you Wildcard, there is a natural inclination to completely transform your squad.

You might not agree, but I’m not totally convinced my team requires a significant overhaul this week. I need a Cunha replacement, of course, but I can achieve that with a free transfer.

Our eyes light up when we see our players up against the likes of Burnley and Sunderland, but worth noting Burnley are unbeaten at home in 24 matches albeit in a lower division, while Sunderland currently have two wins behind them already.

Meanwhile Leeds look solid at home. So I’m suspecting a season where non of the promoted teams are pushovers in the same way that all three were last year, especially Southampton.

You’d say right now Wolves look in poor shape, so I feel Newcastle have the strongest fixture of everybody this week, although losing Wissa is a blow.

Still very early in the season I think to decide who other potentially whipping boys might turn out to be. Thoughts?

I’m with you in two ways, Maltasi.

First, I’m also in Malta right now, sitting on a balcony in Qawra, and second the promoted clubs have done much better than last years pish poor efforts.

Wolves look the worst of the bunch so far.

Nearly time to go home, sadly.

First time we’ve been back since 2019, lots of changes. My wife lived in Sliema for a while in her younger days, so it’s a special place for us. We are staying in an apartment behind Turisti street. Shall be going for a swim in the sea in a bit and hoping that my wretched fantasy team actually does something this GW!

I'm not sure there will be a whipping boy this season, think (and hope) the relegation battle goes to the wire from a footballing perspective. Early days though but all 3 promoted clubs have acquitted themselves well so far.

My thoughts are that our eyes lighting up or not lighting up is quite irrelevant. I do agree that it's likely that none of the promoted teams are the pushovers from last season, but I also think that they'll all be among the weakest teams in the league. Whether anyone's eyes should light up doesn't then matter, you'll still have players playing against some of the weakest teams in the league.

I do also agree that Wolves so far seem terrible, but I'm staying away from Newcastle for now because the club sure seems to be out of luck.

Yes yes, I agree. Liverpool and Palace certainly have good fixtures this weekend, but I was just cautioning against expecting them to be routs. They may well be of course, we shall see!

        Good luck for the gameweek!

The GW directly after an International Break is often unpredictable, though.

Players come back injured or tired, or both, whilst the smaller clubs have had 2 weeks to work on some of the things they needed to tighten up on. Very often the results in these GWs don’t go as expected.

I’m sure that if we looked back at GWs directly following International Breaks you’d see a lot of unexpected results, ie big teams struggling to eventually beat weaker opponents rather than battering them into submission. It’s certainly felt that way to me over the years, anyway.

It is the same with European football too, though, and that's when things start getting muddy. I don't disagree at all, I just think that big teams nowadays have so many games where they haven't been able to fully prepare for the GW that it starts getting quite difficult to draw useful conclusions from it. Like, you can't really just conclude to avoid Liverpool, Arsenal, and Chelsea because they have so many games in their calendar that they sometimes struggle and/or rotate.

Yes! I had a good look back to gameweek 4 last season. Leicester drew at Palace and Ipswich got a point at Brighton. Southampton were thrashed at home, but that seemed to happen most weeks regardless of international breaks or not!

That's something for everybody to consider. Fixtures aren't something you can just mark as easy, average, or difficult. They're all difficult, in fact, and while Brunley away looks easy on paper for a casual, a more knowledgeable perspective would include exactly what you said (about their unbeaten run) and the fact that the team will probably show up in a heavy low block, which is going to be hard to break down. It's all possible, but once the gameweek starts to go down, you're quickly noticing the patterns, especially when the Saturday 3 pm kick-off goalscorers are revealed. It's often an aha moment, something you should've known all along.

    Final option on WC:
    Which one is best:
    FH - gw 6

    A) Lacroix - Bruno - Muniz
    B) Andersen - Paqueta - Mateta

    Current draft is:

    Raya

    Virgil - Munoz - Cucurella - Lacroix

Salah - Semenyo - Bruno

    Pedro - Muniz - Gyokeres

Dubravka - King - Senesi - Elliott

    1. Fifa las vegas

    WC thoughts?

    Sanchez
    Cucurella, Munoz, Livramento
    Salah, Gakpo, Semenyo, Kudus, Grealish
    Pedro, Mateta

    Dubravka, Kolo Muani, Senesi, VdV

Not convinced, would rather Raya over doubled Chelsea defence I think. And cucurella seems to have more upside than Sanchez, unless I go with Calafiori instead. Muani as well, also not sure? Probably will want Isak but that will actually take some work from this wildcard, downgrading Salah the obvious option.

    Last spot for my wildcard...

Don't fancy Grealish. Thinking about a punt on Madueke, who may enjoy running at that Forest backline. Or Doku whipping balls in at Bayindir. Maverick shouts, I realise...

    Raya, Dubravka
    VVD, VDV, Truffert, Munoz, Gudmondson
Semenyo, Gakpo, Xavi, Stach [ANYONE UP TO 9.1]
    Haaland, Ekitike, Mateta

I think we saw this movie last year. Goes something like nobody starts with Arsenal defenders GW1 because fixtures are bad then they buy them for the good fixtures and they start conceding. Then they start calling them frauds. See the run commencing Leicester I think last season? We need to rethink our logic around fixtures. Arteta has the handbrake firmly on for tough games, he releases it fully for games they ought to win.

    Raya (Dubravka)

    Salah Semenyo ? Simons (KDH)
    JP Mateta ?

    a) Gakpo and Gyökeres

    a) looks slightly better to me, but I would be "stuck" with Gakpo until at least GW 7 (since I'm switching Salah->Haaland TC in GW 6). Still the better option?

Not 100% on double Palace def or Pedro mind you. Open to suggestions...

    Raya
    Tosin - Andersen - Munoz - Richards
    Salah (c) - Semenyo - Gakpo
    Haaland - Mateta - Pedro

    Darlow / King - Gudmunsson - Miley

      Probably going 5-2-3 with:

Gabriel (NFO), Burn (WOL), Lacroix (SUN), Tark (AVL), Porro (whu)

But should any of them be benched for:
      1) Brennan Johnson (whu)
      2) Josh King (LEE)
      3) Tijjani Reinjders (MUN)
