With mid-price goalscoring defenders playing such a significant role in Fantasy Football in recent times, we thought we’d delve into the Members’ Opta statistics to help identify those sides who are posing the biggest threat in the air from set-pieces.

We took a closer look at the “Aerial Duels” statistic, calculating the percentage of duels won so far for each team in the Premier League and then put these together with set-pieces won and a measure of deadball delivery. Throw in some specific player stats that help analyse the key individuals, and you have our handy guide to the teams that lead the air raid and the defenders most likely to benefit.

you guys think i need to downgrade a defender like cole in the coming weeks to get nani in for ethers, or just use the extra cash to bring in kolarov for the likes of jones? it's a tough one because ethers is one of the best buys in the game and i'd hate to get rid of him as he's so consistent. nani on the other hand can be hot/cold.

  Nani could be hot and cold last few seasons, more hot than cold now the Ronaldo shaped thumb on his shoulder has moved to warmer climes. Ethers yes, great buy... tough call but I'd go Nani. Theres only 4 must have MF's at the mo, Fabs (Nasri?) Malouda Nani and now VDV over the falling Bale... I think Silva will be added shortly and am desperately trying to figure how I can lose Albrighton and gain Silva, but it means too much restructuring and a big headache... perhaps it may begin with Alex>Bosingwa and end in Jan with a W/C...

      loving Adam, the boys a legend, but back to the 'have albrighton cant lose him' debate. I think Silva is a dead cert to start nearly every game soon. Johnson for me is amazing player but perhaps on the other wing from Silva? SWP wont get a look in soon and isnt Milner down the middle these days? Barry for England was so pants that Mancini must be noticing sooner or later

    Silva has never had a particularly prolific fantasy output. Even in Spain, he rarely scored, and assisted only occasionally. He's the equivalent of a midfielder in the 7.0 bracket.

  Downgrade O'Shea. I think he might not even play with Rio back in the team and Rafael as an option.
  
  Get a 4.0 defender or Simpson. Save the funds. Four good defenders is plenty.
  
  Should be looking to get in Nani.
  
  For me, there are 3 players at the moment who you absolutely MUST-HAVE.
  
  Elmohamady, Nani and Drogba
  
  Drogba is an obvious choice. Highest points scorer, most reliable captain in the game, on set pieces and pens (until Lampard takes the role back?).
  
  Elmohamady is an easy choice too. Plays OoP for a mid-table club. Offers attacking potential, clean sheet possibilities, and is an absolute steal at 4.7.
  
  Nani is the last one. His returns so far have been great, and without Valencia for competition and ManUtd needing a spark of genius, Nani is one of the only ones who can provide it. His recent form has been terrific, and he is already showing signs of becoming the new Ronaldo. A fantasy goldmine.

    i agree, but i feel that having a united defender is a must now that rio has come back in for evans to solidify the group. o'shea is the cheapest consistent option. rafael might come in this week simply because of o'shea's int's., but for the long term i'd say o'shea will maintain his starting role. how about cole>alex (when fit), then ethers>nani?

    I think NZog is back in favour with his manager. Would like to see what his projections were pre season.
    
    He is now 0.5m cheaper than at the start and in 7 games have not scored a single goal and has only 1 assist i think. Time to catch him before those stats increase, and it will.

      I'm not sure, there are a lot of other cheap options - Adam, Albrighton, Zogs, Barton... I'm not sure people will readily trade them in for Zogs unless he really starts firing again, and Wigan are SOOOOOOOOO hot and cold its untrue

    Yeah, I'm thinking of going with a Drogba, Carroll, Elmander trio up front. That could well be as profitable as having two big guns and one dirt cheapie.
    
    All the data this season is telling us that the consistent performers so far this season are mainly those non big name players. To ignore them just because they don't have a huge price tag or a favorable reputation seems silly.
    
    For example, I still see people hanging onto or recommending getting Rooney and Lampard once they return. Yet guys like Adam and Elmander are out performing them hands down. But, still, their combined ownership is less tan the combined ownership of the two underperforming big guns just mentioned.

      I'll be having that strikeforce too come the weekend, Drogba is a must have, Elmander has been in great form and Bolton have some nice fixtures coming up IMO ad Carroll has very good fixtures and I'm sure he will start scoring again. Gives the chance to have a strong midfield plus I can keep Cole and have a relatively strong defence too.

  I would try to get a cheaper City defender than Toure though.
  
  Kolarov would be fantastic if he becomes a regular starter.
  
  Not really sure where the funds could be used better, but Gohouri isn't guaranteed starts, and you could get Alcaraz or Givet with just a little more money.
  
  Love the midfield, and the attack is going with the 2 cheap forwards method which could work out really well.

        I like Adam, he's a bargain, but with the team you have its tough to play him. This week I have to bench him as cant play 2-5-3! Its annoying but have to play elmander and carroll too. Your team will be better than mine post WC so you will have harder prob! Budget mid may be way to go, but if not pressed WC yet Id hold out...wait for those injury news pieces Sat morn!

        Ive sold Bale, simple reason being for all his amazing play in real life, if his strikers are not scoring then his stats have very little chance of improving, Arteta is having the same problem, when swapping him for Cesc it was done purely because he is more consistent and because Arsenal score goals from all over with Cesc having a big chance to be involved in most of it.

I'm seriously considering the Odemwingie/Carroll combo up front partnered with Drogba from GW10 (changing between Carroll & Odem each week keeping as they have a perfect H/A alternation) to release funds for a midfield 5 comprised of Fabregas Malouda Nani VDV Etherington who would be played every week, with a 3-5-2 formation.

It's killing me trying to figure out if it will be better long term to keep Tevez and have a weaker midfield (Malouda Nani VDV Etherington Barton), or go for the above. I'm a big fan of the big 5 mids.

So... captain for the weekend then. For those, like me, who have both Fab & Nani I think it makes more sense to captain Nani. Main factors being:

a. Fab has played ~ 4 games in the last 5 months - can't be anywhere near 100%
b. Fab is at much more of a risk of being rested/limited mins - especially if Arsenal kill the game off early
c. Even if Fab does get a massive haul, at least you'll get half of it from having him in there
d. Home to West Brom should "in theory" be easier than the brummies... and Nani is on fire + as close to a guaranteed starter as you'll get at utd at the minute

    Nani the only senior fit winger with a CL game midweek where Man Utd, have already lost points. Isn't possible that Nani will be taken off around 60min mark? He'll have possibly one assist at that time IMO. Berbs can have good game, Rooney could finally score, Scholes, Vidic also if it is a tight game so they are all contenders for 3bp which means Nani is not guaranteed for those points. On the other hand after 3 bad results I believe that Arsenal surely will win it and Cesc will hover the 3BP's. I am not saying that Nani is not valuable option but I think that there is also possibility and for him to go of earlier in the game, cause lets not forget he played twice and for his national team.

Anyone considering Nasri for Bale? Seriously tempting me. 3 excellent home fixtures in 4 for Arse and Nasri seems to be right on top of his game at present, including a good performance for France.

Even with Fab returning, I can still see Nasri scoring well on the right of the front 3.

Only concern is the return of Theo/Champ league effect. I cannot see Theo starting for another 3 weeks though and Arse seem to be cruising the Champ league group so I am hoping that Nasri at least starts the next 4 games. I do feel slightly anxious about him though.

  It makes sense Si but there is a risk involved now as a lot of injuries are clearing up and Wenger almost has a full squad to pick from, can see quite a bit of rotation coming up.
  
  I'm looking at Walcott but am cautious for above reasons, realistically I'm probably just gonna go with Fabregas and Van Persie for the run.
  
  I did get rid of Bale though.

ive noticed that some of the teams that are doing very well have bought 1-2 players that they have no intention of ever playing. Players like reo-coker, harewood, ameobi etc.

is it wise to do this or are they shooting themselves in the foot at a later date..

was toying with the idea of ditching zogs and ethers for emerton(4.3) and VDV. Would give me nani, fabs, vdv and malouda, plus drogs and tevez up front...

  emerton actually has started shooting a lot last two games and once upon a time he weighed in with a fair share of goals/assists for PSV. i'd wait and see if he starts next couple/does well then by all means
