Tim Krul is sent home from Holland’s training camp with an elbow problem. Gareth Barry is nearing a return for City, Brad Friedel is determined to hold off the challenge of Hugo Lloris between the posts for Tottenham, while John Terry joins Ashley Cole on the sidelines with less than a week until Chelsea’s trip to QPR:

Alan Pardew’s injury worries show no sign of abating right now. With Danny Simpson ruled out and Fabricio Coloccini a doubt, the Magpies boss now has Tim Krul’s fitness to fret over after the keeper was sent home from Holland training with an elbow problem. Krul featured for his country in a 2-0 win over Turkey on Friday evening but now faces a wait over the prognosis – with a trip to Everton up next, Fantasy faith in the Toffees assets looks set to grow.

Brad Friedel has spoken of his determination to see off the challenge of Spurs’ new keeper Hugo Lloris:

When I signed for Tottenham, I signed as a stop-gap while Tottenham looked for a long-term goalkeeper. Tottenham deserve a long-term goalkeeper. Right now I believe the shirt is mine to lose, I believe the manager came out and said that. If that’s the case then great.

Friedel was voted Man of the Match in Spurs’ previous game at home to Norwich, with a string of saves denying the Canaries a win. Ahead of a run of games that sees Spurs square up to (rdg, QPR, AVL) in the next four, the US international still seems to be in the driving seat but with Tottenham failing to register a single clean sheet under Andre Villas-Boas so far, faith in their defensive assets has taken a real dip, despite those favourable fixtures.

Elsewhere, Joe Allen is expected to be fit for Wales’ game with Serbia. The Liverpool midfielder missed the 2-0 defeat by Belgium on Friday due to a virus but is now expected to shake off any after-effects and take his place in the squad. John Terry has joined Ashley Cole on the sidelines for England’s match with Ukraine due to an ankle, with the pair battling to be ready for Chelsea’s Gameweek 4 trip to QPR.

Zoltan Gera is expected to be fit for Hungary’s match with Holland – the West Brom midfielder was subbed off against Andorra on Friday with an Achilles knock but has since returned to training. Jonny Evans has handed Northern Ireland a fitness boost ahead of Tuesday’s match with Luxembourg – the centre-half picked up an ankle knock in last week’s defeat to Russia but has come through a training session unscathed.

Gareth Barry revealed he is closing in on a comeback for City. The midfielder – who has yet to feature this term for the champions – went on to say:

I had a double hernia operation which meant an initial four weeks out, but then I tore a muscle in rehab which set me back a little bit, but I don’t think I’m too far off now – touch wood! I’m just taking things one day at a time but I’m feeling quite strong again which is really good. I’ve had two outings with the Elite Development Squad now – 45 minutes against Middlesbrough and 80 against Liverpool and I felt a lot better in the second game so things are progressing nicely.

Barry’s absence – allied with Nigel De Jong’s sale to AC Milan – has handed Jack Rodwell the chance to cement his place as Yaya Toure’s central midfield partner in a couple of City’s games thus far. With Barry reluctant to put a date on his comeback, Rodwell seems set to continue in the first XI for next weekend’s trip to Stoke as City look to register their first away win of the new campaign.

Turning against Bale > Santi as time goes by, it's a bit of a luxury transfer and if I wait a week and Bale fails again I'll at least have the option of Hazard as well. Only issue is the likely 0.2 price swing but generally worrying about price makes me make the wrong decisions.

at the beginin of the week i thought bale would drop by 0.3.. and still wanted to keep him till GW 8. He should do ok with the fixtures they've got and ade startin upfront. He scores a goal/assist.. being such a high profile player he'll prob rise real quick and make up for any value lost

is it me or has there been a lot less transfer activity in this break than usual? I sense a lot of the early WCs went a week in advance due to the Rooney/Aguero injuries and so on.

Bale's goal record as of late is awful but assists I think we can still hope for, enough to justify keeping him especially with Santi's next two fixtures. That and dropping points at home to Soton after beating Pool away would be very Arsenal.

Nah, it will ramp up again by the end of this week.

Be surprised if Bale doesn't fall again as people head for Hazard/Cazorla, or whoever else is near the top of the scoring charts.

I'd hop to Cazorla now, it seems like he's going to be the key ingredient for most of Arsenal's goals and I imagine they're going to have some high scoring thrillers against Chelsea and City. I think Cazorla is going to be the main man to carry them to the top 4 spot or wherever they end up.

As an old fogey that remembers that glorious goal against Argentina and his cup exploits with Liverpool it saddens me to see him now valued at 5.5m...but that is a fair price. Worth noting that he played very well for Man Utd in the carling cup last season when fit. He has the potential to do some serious damage on occasions and has a good record with Crouch as well for England.

Personally I'm staying clear but wouldn't mock anyone that went for the plucky young racehorse owner.

He had plenty of poor matches last season too. A great player, legend, no doubt..but I wouldnt call him the best current CM in the league..

I've got to agree with this, it's taking the piss a bit to say Paul Scholes at this age is the best CM right now. In faster games he did struggle, which is entirely understandable given his age.

Morning all. Entering in to the second week of the int. break I could use a quick RMT. I resisted playing my WC, instead taking -4pts to bring in Hazard at 9.9m. Unsure on my transfer strategy for GW5, but have Ivan>Baines lined up for GW6

    Jussi (Bego)
    Ivan Rafael Cuellar (Ridge Gunter)
    Hazard Michu Yaya Ahmadi (Noble)
    RVP(c) Tevez Pod

For a non WC team I will take that. Ahmadi has looked v impressive for Villa in pre-season and has been our standout play over the first 3 games (scoring against Everton). If I were playing my WC I would be swapping him for Guthrie but since I'm not I prefer him over Noble this GW. As for Pod he is on borrowed time, but I may well be swapping him for Fletcher after the Soton game

Pienaar. Easy. Especially as you have Baines.

Decisions i am struggling with is:
-Whether to get Bale aswell as Hazard & Cazorla.
-Whether to go for Pog, or go for a more expensive 3rd striker like Fletcher, Lambert etc....

Obviously each decision impacts on the entire squad.

Not really, as far as I can tell 9/15 players pick themselves...

      Baines, Demel
      Hazard, Cazorla, Michu, Guthrie, (HBA/Pienaar/Toure)
      RVP, Tevez, lambert

Now choose your goalkeepers and other 3 defenders depending on how much £ you have left

Lol, Bale? Maloney? And if you have RVP, Tevez, Lambert, Hazard, Cazorla, Michu, Ben Arfa and Baines, then the rest of your defence will be weak and require a lot of transfers once the big guns start keeping CS

Why would you wildcard card in a player currently decreasing in value? (Bale)
Maloney is OK but no where near as good as those listed above.
If your value is roughly 102.5 as it should be if you made good transfers in the first few weeks then you can fill in with reasonable defenders (4.5m's and 5m's)
You have 1 expensive defender in that line up, how many do you normally have in your team? Money is better spent in midfield.

Yeah I was, trying to stay calm. No doubt Santi will do well vs South, but I think I might just stick with Bale.

I want Lambert and one of Ridgewell/McCauley or mayyybe Saylor in for week 5. Really should have had Nolan but getting rid of Jarvis at the moment is a bit sideways. Morrison?

I don't suppose anybody has an update on Adam Johnson since he pulled out of the England squad.
    I can't find anything anywhere.

I think that's because it wasn't a serious injury. He'll be fine I'd imagine. Probably a precaution or he was too lazy to travel to Moldova (we've all been there)

just realised my joke is entirely ambiguous, do I mean we've all been to Moldova or we've all at one time been reluctant to go to Moldova? It's a mystery...

Does Charlie Adams joining Stoke significantly improve Huth's chances of scoring a goal?

Huth had 43 attempts on goal last season, including 35 in the box and 27 headed - That's the second highest number of attempts for any defender. He only managed 3 goals however. With Adams well known for his delivery from set pieces, and Stoke well known for their love of a set piece, it sounds like a license to print Huth goals??

The other player with some flair for getting on the end of a set piece according to last year's stats is Jonas Olsson with 30 attempts, all in the box, and 26 headed. He managed 2 goals but tall defenders display obvious threat. Gorkss is another one who has shown some some ability in that area.

I'm thinking of going for Olsson, Everyone's gone for McCauley because he scored and is now 5.1m...Ridgewell seems like more of a threat to rotation. Olsson seems the safest if you've missed the boat on McCauley. And your stat makes it more appealing now.

Yeah Olsson is well under the radar according to the stats (though this year's have yet to impress). This year's sleeper hit might be Marc Wilson who is ranking 9th ITC and very high for threat and creativity.

I think his stats might be slightly exaggerated by his performance against Wigan (a 3 man defence affording him overlap space) but he's one to watch...
